Getting a whole family dressed for fall photos is often harder than booking the session. My approach never changes: nobody wears the same outfit, but two or three colors repeat across everyone, and the textures vary so the group has depth. Knits, denim, corduroy and suede do most of that work. Think about the location and the likely temperature before anyone commits to a heavy sweater or thin shoes, and make sure every person, especially the smallest ones, can sit, walk and play in what they're wearing. The twenty palettes below show how I'd dress adults, kids and babies for each one.

Building the Family Palette From the Hardest Piece
I always start with the single hardest item to replace, usually a patterned dress or a favorite coat, and build everyone else outward from it. It's much easier than buying five new outfits that are meant to work together.
- Pick the anchor piece and name the two or three colors in it.
- Dress the second adult in one of those colors as a solid, plus a neutral.
- Give each child one color from the anchor and one neutral, so no two kids match exactly.
- Use the remaining neutral for shoes, coats and accessories across the whole group.
- Allow only one more pattern, and keep it smaller in scale than the anchor's.
Shopping usually comes down to one or two gap pieces, often for the kids, since they outgrow last year's clothes fastest.
1. Cream And Camel Fall Family Picture Outfit

Cream and camel look natural against golden leaves or an open field, and they're the palette I'd suggest to a family that wants the photos to age well. One adult wears a cream midi dress, tan ankle boots and a camel cardigan; the other a light beige sweater, camel chinos and brown boots. Kids go into ivory knits with tan trousers, corduroy overalls or a cream dress, with knee socks and brown shoes. The danger with close neutrals is that the group merges into one beige shape, so texture has to separate people: cable knit next to brushed cotton, suede next to rib. Keep accessories minimal.
2. Olive And Rust Fall Family Picture Outfit

Olive and rust bring out the earthiness of an autumn landscape without looking matched. One adult in a rust wrap or maxi dress with taupe ankle boots; the other in an olive button-down, dark jeans and brown boots. One child in a cream sweater with rust corduroy pants, another in an olive dress or overalls, and the baby in an oatmeal romper with a small olive cardigan. I never split the colors evenly. Rust brings the warmth, olive grounds it, and a little cream near the faces separates everyone from a green or wooded background. Keep any prints small.
3. Navy And Mustard Fall Family Picture Outfit

Want fall color without leaning on brown? Navy and mustard is cheerful and classic. One adult wears a mustard midi dress, a cropped navy cardigan and cognac boots; the other a navy sweater over a pale blue shirt with tan trousers and loafers. Kids look sharp in mustard knits, navy corduroy, denim or a small navy floral, with cream tights or brown boots. Mustard is loud on camera and reflects yellow onto skin when it sits right under the chin, so I keep it to two or three people and often put it lower in the outfit on the adults. Navy balances it in fields and in town, and a few camel accessories tie it together.
4. Burgundy And Blush Fall Family Picture Outfit

Burgundy gives depth, and blush keeps it gentle. One adult wears a burgundy maxi dress with a defined waist, gold jewelry and taupe boots; the other a soft grey or cream sweater with dark burgundy chinos. One child in a dusty blush dress and burgundy cardigan, another in a cream button-down with charcoal pants, and the baby in a pale pink knit romper. Blush can turn peachy beside strong orange leaves, so use it sparingly there and let deeper shades carry the frame. Velvet suits this palette, but it shows every crush mark from a car seat, so I keep velvet for the person who changes at the location.
5. Sage And Beige Fall Family Picture Outfit

Sage and beige make light, airy portraits, and they suit early fall when trees are still green. One adult in a sage midi dress with a beige cardigan and tan boots; the other in a cream henley, beige trousers and a sage overshirt. Kids in oatmeal sweaters, sage dresses, tan overalls and brown leather shoes, and the baby in an ivory knit set. Bright white looks harsh in this soft group, so I swap it for ivory or oatmeal every time. Ribbed and woven textures keep the quiet colors interesting. One honest trade-off: against a green backdrop, sage can fade, so check the location before committing.
6. Black Tan And Ivory Fall Family Picture Outfit

Black works in family photos when it's softened with tan and ivory. One adult wears an ivory sweater dress, black ankle boots and a camel coat; the other a black crewneck, tan trousers and dark brown boots. Kids in ivory tops with black jeans, tan corduroy skirts or subtle neutral plaid; the baby in a cream romper and camel cardigan. Spread the black around the group, a belt here and boots there, rather than putting one person in head-to-toe black. In a group shot, one all-black figure reads as a hole in the frame. Flowing skirts and relaxed coats keep this palette from feeling formal on city streets and stone steps.
7. Plum And Taupe Fall Family Picture Outfit

Plum is a softer alternative to burgundy and sits well with taupe. One adult in a plum pleated dress or satin midi skirt with a cream sweater and taupe boots; the other in a heathered taupe pullover, charcoal pants and suede shoes. Kids in lavender, oatmeal and deep plum knits or corduroy, and the baby in an ivory one-piece with plum socks. I allow one shiny garment per group at most, because satin catches the light differently from everyone else's matte knits. Grey stone, tall grasses and muted foliage show the purple off without competing with it.
8. Terracotta And Cream Fall Family Picture Outfit

Terracotta echoes fall leaves, and cream keeps faces bright. Build around one terracotta piece, a maxi dress or a rust skirt, then dress the other adult in a cream sweater, dark denim and a brown jacket. Kids pair ivory tops with rust trousers, small floral dresses or tan suspenders; the baby wears a cream romper with a terracotta cardigan. Keep extra colors to brown and soft beige. If the location is already blazing orange, choose a muted clay shade instead of pumpkin, or the clothes and trees blur together. Cognac shoes and restrained accessories finish the group.
9. Dusty Blue And Chocolate Brown Fall Family Picture Outfit

Dusty blue and chocolate brown feel calm and fresh. One adult in a dusty blue wrap dress with brown boots; the other in a chocolate quarter-zip, medium-wash jeans and tan shoes. Kids in pale blue button-downs, brown cords, cream cardigans or small blue florals, and the baby in an oatmeal romper with a dusty blue knit. I put the blue near faces and the brown below the waist, which gives the group a light top and a solid base. Steer clear of bright royal blue in this mix; muted slate and denim blues sit far better beside brown, cream and tall grass.
10. Monochrome Brown Fall Family Picture Outfit

An all-brown family looks warm and modern when each person wears a different shade. One adult in a chocolate knit dress and camel boots; the other in a taupe overshirt, cream tee, dark brown trousers and suede shoes. Kids mix caramel sweaters with tan corduroy, a cocoa dress with cream tights, or beige overalls over ivory; the baby wears oatmeal with brown booties. Spread light, medium and dark tones across the group. Against tree trunks, dark brown disappears completely, so a few ivory details are what keep people visible in a wooded spot.
11. Forest Green And Camel Fall Family Picture Outfit

Forest green is rich and grounded beside camel. One adult wears a deep green midi dress, a camel coat and knee-high boots; the other a camel sweater, dark jeans and a green jacket. Kids in cream shirts, green corduroy, camel cardigans and brown shoes; the baby in an ivory romper with a dark green knit. Keep the green solid rather than in big botanical prints, which can look busy in a forest. Spreading camel across coats, pants and accessories links everyone. When leaves are gold or rust, green gives contrast while camel echoes the landscape.
12. Gray And Burgundy Fall Family Picture Outfit

Grey gives burgundy a clean base for both casual and dressier sessions. One adult in a burgundy sweater dress, charcoal boots and a soft grey coat; the other in a light grey sweater with charcoal trousers. Kids in grey cable knits with dark jeans, burgundy dresses with cream tights, or charcoal suspenders over an ivory shirt; the baby in heather grey with a burgundy cardigan. Grey can look cold in autumn light, so I add warmth with cream accessories and brown shoes. Place the burgundy on different parts of each outfit, a sweater on one, a skirt on another, so the color moves around the frame.
13. Rust And Dusty Blue Fall Family Picture Outfit

Warm rust and cool dusty blue balance each other. One adult wears a rust midi dress, tan boots and a cream scarf; the other a dusty blue button-down under a brown jacket with dark jeans. Kids in chambray, rust corduroy, cream knits or a small floral with both colors, and the baby in oatmeal with a muted blue cardigan. My most-used coordination trick lives here: let one outfit carry the print, then pull its colors into everyone else's solids. It's the fastest way to look planned without looking matched. Medium-wash denim bridges the two shades in fields and orchards.
14. Cream Plaid And Denim Fall Family Picture Outfit

Plaid and denim stay relaxed when the plaid appears once. One adult wears a cream sweater, a plaid midi skirt, brown ankle boots and a simple belt; the other a chambray shirt under a camel jacket with dark jeans. One child in a cream cable knit and denim, another in a subtle plaid dress with neutral tights, and the baby in denim overalls over an ivory bodysuit. Pick one plaid with cream, brown and navy in it and repeat those colors in solid pieces. Everyone in a plaid shirt looks like a uniform. Denim also forgives kids who kneel in the grass, since it shrugs off dirt better than pale cotton.
15. Warm Weather Fall Family Picture Outfit

Early fall can still feel like summer, and kids in heavy sweaters on a warm afternoon end up red-faced and cranky in the photos. Choose breathable pieces in fall colors. One adult in an olive cotton midi dress with tan sandals or ankle boots; the other in a cream short-sleeve button-down with rust chinos and loafers. Kids in light beige overalls, dusty blue dresses or ivory shirts with cotton shorts, and the baby in a simple sage romper. Linen blends and cotton gauze suggest the season without the heat, though linen creases fast, so dress in it last. Closed-toe shoes look more autumnal, but clean leather sandals are fine in a hot climate.
16. Trench Coat Fall Family Picture Outfit

Coats make a family look connected while everyone wears something different underneath. One adult in a camel trench over a cream sweater and dark jeans with brown boots; the other in a navy field jacket, beige chinos and leather sneakers. Kids in light tan jackets over ivory tops, plaid dresses or olive cords, and the baby in a knit bonnet and buttoned cardigan. Keep the coats open for some frames so the layers show. Children's jackets often have bright zips or reflective strips, which catch the light, so a plain button-front jacket is worth borrowing if yours don't. It suits city sidewalks and tree-lined paths.
17. Rustic Farm Fall Family Picture Outfit

Barns, orchards and open fields need clothes that feel relaxed without slipping into costume. One adult wears a cream blouse tucked into a rust midi skirt with brown boots; the other a chambray shirt, an olive utility jacket, dark denim and sturdy shoes. Kids in camel corduroy overalls, floral dresses and cable knits with ankle boots, and the baby in oatmeal with a small brown cardigan. Skip matching flannel shirts and big hats, which shade faces. Let denim, corduroy and suede carry the rustic feel. Check the shoes too: farm ground is uneven, and a toddler in slippery new soles falls over.
18. City Fall Family Picture Outfit

City sessions suit clean tailoring and simple layers. One adult wears a camel blazer over an ivory blouse with dark trousers and loafers; the other a charcoal sweater, navy chinos and polished brown boots. Kids in knit dresses, collared shirts, pleated skirts or tailored cords, with tights and leather sneakers or loafers they can walk blocks in. The baby wears cream under a soft grey cardigan. Keep the palette to camel, charcoal, ivory and navy, with burgundy as a small accent. Bright athletic sneakers jump out on pavement, so I'd swap them for leather unless the whole family is dressed casually.
19. Woodland Layered Fall Family Picture Outfit

Woodland sessions run cool, so layers have to be warm and still show. One adult in a cream turtleneck under an olive vest with a brown midi skirt and boots; the other in a rust overshirt over a beige henley with dark jeans. Kids in cable knits, cords, quilted vests or small florals with cardigans, and the baby in a knit romper with warm socks. Vary the layers so not everyone wears a vest. Put cream near the faces and deeper greens and browns lower down, because shade under trees darkens everything near the ground. Layers that fit neatly let people peel one off if the sun comes out.
20. Jewel Tone Fall Family Picture Outfit

Jewel tones suit large families because several rich colors can share one frame. Build around emerald, burgundy, navy, plum and cream. One adult wears an emerald maxi dress with neutral boots, another a navy sweater with grey trousers. Kids rotate burgundy cardigans, plum dresses, cream shirts and dark denim. Grandparents often prefer camel jackets or soft grey knits, which support the deeper colors. Give each person one main jewel tone and spread darks and lights evenly across the group. When I arrange a big family, I put the deepest colors at the outer edges and lighter ones in the middle, which holds the frame together.
Babies and Toddlers Who Won't Sit Still
The smallest people decide how a family session goes. Their outfits should be soft, easy to change and comfortable enough that nobody fights them.
- A baby held against a parent's chest sits right on that parent's outfit, so choose contrasting shades for the two of them, a cream romper against a burgundy sweater, not cream on cream.
- Rompers with snaps at the crotch make diaper changes quick without undressing the whole outfit.
- Bonnets and headbands slip; bring them, but don't let them become a fight.
- Keep a spare top for every child under five. Juice, mud and drool all happen.
- Pack snacks that don't stain, such as crackers instead of berries, and hand them out after the main group shots.
Dress toddlers last, at the location if you can. Ten fewer minutes in a stiff collar can be the difference between a smile and a meltdown.
When Grandparents Join the Frame
Extended family sessions bring three generations and very different wardrobes into one picture. I don't ask grandparents to shop for the shoot. I look at what they already own and fit the palette around it, because people who feel comfortable in their clothes stand and smile more naturally.
Silver and white hair can fade beside beige, oatmeal and pale grey, so I give older relatives a deeper color near the face, such as navy, burgundy or forest green. Soft cardigans and unstructured jackets are kinder than stiff blazers for anyone who will sit for posed shots. Comfortable, flat shoes matter too, since uneven grass is harder on older knees, and nobody looks relaxed while worrying about their footing.
Lay Every Outfit on the Bed Before Session Day
Start with a small palette and build each person's outfit from it. Coordinate colors without copying outfits, vary textures, and give everyone shoes and layers they can move in. A few days before the session, lay every outfit on a bed or floor side by side and take a phone photo. Anything that jumps out or disappears in that photo will do the same in the real ones, and it's far easier to swap a sweater at home than on location. When the clothes suit your family and the place, the pictures will feel like you.
