Autumn is my favorite season to dress a baby girl, mostly because the fabrics finally get interesting: cable knits, corduroy, small botanical prints and soft velvet. The trick is keeping all that texture comfortable for someone who spends half her day on the floor. Most of what I put together here starts with a cotton bodysuit, then adds a pinafore, romper or dress, then a cardigan and tights. Every outfit has room to move and fastenings that don't make diaper changes a project. Swap the shoes to suit her stage: soft booties if she isn't walking, flexible shoes once she is.

Tights, Leggings or Knee Socks?
Almost every outfit below needs something on her legs, and the right choice depends more on how she moves than on the dress. Here's how I decide.
- Crawlers: leggings win. Tights twist at the ankle and wear thin at the knees fast once she's on hard floors, and the feet bunch inside booties.
- Cruisers pulling up on furniture: footless leggings or tights with grippy soles. Plain footed tights on a wood floor are slippery, and that's exactly when she's least steady.
- Babies in a carrier or stroller most of the day: tights are fine and look neater under a dress.
- Mild afternoons: knee socks with a wide, soft cuff. Narrow cuffs slide down round calves within an hour.
For warmth, ribbed cotton tights beat thin nylon ones every time, and they hold their shape after washing. If she has sensitive skin, run your hand along the inside seams before buying; a thick toe seam rubs inside a snug bootie.
1. Baby Girl Cable Knit Romper Outfit

A cream cable knit romper is what I'd choose for her first cold morning of the season. Look for cotton rather than wool against the skin, long sleeves, and snaps along the legs. The cables add real warmth because the twisted stitches make the fabric thicker, so you rarely need a coat over it for a short stroller walk. Oatmeal ribbed tights and cream knitted booties keep the palette quiet. A dusty rose cardigan sized one up slips over the cables without squashing them. Bonnets and bows are for supervised, awake time only.
2. Baby Girl Floral Dress And Cardigan Outfit

Small florals give a neutral wardrobe some color without shouting. I'd choose a long-sleeve cotton dress with rust and sage flowers on a cream ground, because a light ground hides crumbs better than you'd expect. Over it, an oatmeal cardigan that comes off when the afternoon warms. Ribbed cream tights and brown soft-soled shoes ground the look. Check the dress skirt has enough width that she can crawl without kneeling on the hem; a narrow cut traps her knees and she'll just get frustrated.
3. Baby Girl Corduroy Pinafore Outfit

Corduroy pinafores are easy on parents because the bodysuit underneath does all the work of staying tucked. Pick a caramel or chocolate pinafore with adjustable straps and a gathered skirt, then a cream bodysuit with a ruffled collar that peeks above the bib. Beige tights and flexible tan shoes finish it. When I add a cardigan on colder days, I go one shade lighter than the corduroy, so the outfit doesn't turn into one brown block. It handles daycare and a trip to the orchard equally well.
4. Baby Girl Ribbed Top And Floral Leggings Outfit

Printed leggings are the hardest-working thing in a baby's autumn drawer. Pair floral leggings with a solid ribbed top in terracotta, ideally one with shoulder snaps so it slides over her head without a fight. The waistband should sit flat over a diaper without leaving a red line when you take it off. A lightweight knit vest warms her core and leaves her arms free to reach. Finish with socks and booties for non-walkers or flexible sneakers for active ones. This is my pick for a playdate morning when you've got ten minutes to get out the door.
5. Baby Girl Knit Sweater Dress Outfit

Sweater dresses look like effort but are really one piece and done. I go for a cotton blend in mauve or forest green with a relaxed body, since baby sweater dresses that cling ride up as soon as she sits. Cream ribbed tights lighten the deeper shade. Tan Mary Janes are for walkers; younger babies stay in soft knitted booties. If she needs more warmth, add a thin bodysuit underneath instead of a heavier knit on top. Two light layers trap more warmth than one thick one and let you adjust.
6. Baby Girl Denim Overall Dress Outfit

With denim, softness is everything. Stiff denim on a baby stands away from her body and creases into ridges at the hips when she sits, so I look for a light, washed overall dress with adjustable straps for growing room. A rust and cream striped bodysuit goes underneath, with warm gray tights and camel booties. A mustard cardigan brings in a brighter note. On anything for younger babies, tug every button and snap before she wears it; decorative buttons are the ones that work loose first.
7. Baby Girl Plaid Romper And Cardigan Outfit

A soft plaid romper in cream, burgundy and brown is about as classic as baby autumn clothing gets. I'd keep the extra pieces solid: a cream cardigan so the plaid stays in charge, burgundy tights pulled from the check, brown soft-soled shoes. A rounded collar adds detail without needing a bow. On a milder day, swap the tights for cotton knee socks and knitted booties. Plaid holds up in photos indoors and out, though it can get busy next to a sibling in a different check, so plan who wears the pattern.
8. Baby Girl Ruffle Sweatshirt And Joggers Outfit

This is the outfit I'd want her in for a day of crawling, climbing onto laps and rolling around. A cotton sweatshirt with small shoulder ruffles in sage, matching joggers or oatmeal pants with a soft elastic waist, and a short-sleeve bodysuit underneath so the sweatshirt seams aren't against her skin. Ribbed socks with cream sneakers for walkers, jersey booties for crawlers. Shoulder ruffles do flatten in the wash, so a quick press with your fingers while it's damp keeps them standing. Add a quilted vest for outside.
9. Baby Girl Oatmeal Knit Set Outfit

A matching oatmeal knit set is the quickest way to make a baby look put together. Long-sleeve sweater, ribbed pants with a soft waistband, and a white bodysuit underneath that shows a crisp line at the neck. Oatmeal is forgiving with stains in a way cream isn't, which matters more than people think. I add contrast at the feet with dusty pink booties, and a sage quilted jacket for outdoors. A small cream bonnet suits a supervised stroller walk. It travels well, since every piece goes with every other.
10. Baby Girl Mustard Cardigan And Bloomers Outfit

Mustard can tip into too bright on a small baby, so I use it as one layer rather than the whole outfit. A mustard knit cardigan goes over a cream bodysuit with a Peter Pan collar, then brown floral bloomers and warm beige tights. Caramel booties pick up the darker tones in the bloomers. Check the leg elastic on the bloomers before buying; if it presses into her thigh in the shop, it'll leave marks after a full day. Bloomers suit mild days best, since there's nothing between tights and wind but one layer.
11. Baby Girl Rust Romper And Knee Socks Outfit

Rust is the easiest autumn color to build around because it sits comfortably beside cream, brown and muted green. I choose a long-sleeve cotton romper with a gathered waist or ruffled shoulders, then cream knee-high socks for a vintage feel. The catch with knee socks is that they slide down chubby calves, so look for ones with a wide, soft cuff. Brown soft-soled shoes and an oatmeal cardigan for cold mornings finish it. Keep the cardigan open so the romper detail still shows.
12. Baby Girl Quilted Vest And Leggings Outfit

A quilted vest makes changeable autumn weather far easier, because her arms stay free while her chest stays warm. I'd put a sage or small floral vest over a cream ribbed bodysuit, with soft brown leggings that have real stretch for crawling. Cream socks and tan booties keep the rest neutral. If it turns colder, trade the bodysuit for a light knit sweater rather than adding a coat. Skip the very puffy vests; they push up around a baby's chin when she's lying down or sitting in a carrier.
13. Baby Girl Velvet Dress And Tights Outfit

Velvet is the fabric I bring out for one occasion a month, a portrait or a family celebration. A long-sleeve dress in burgundy or plum with a cotton lining is the version I trust, since unlined velvet can feel scratchy at the seams. The skirt needs enough fullness for her to sit. Cream tights brighten the deep color, and Mary Janes or velour booties finish it. Add a cropped ivory cardigan on a chilly day. Velvet crushes where she sits, so I put it on right before the event, not first thing in the morning.
14. Baby Girl Printed Bodysuit And Corduroy Pants Outfit

For ordinary days, a printed bodysuit with corduroy pants is hard to beat. Pick a tiny acorn or leaf print, then caramel or olive corduroy with a waistband that stretches over a diaper. A cream button-front cardigan softens the darker pants. Brown socks and knitted booties suit younger babies; walkers need flexible tan sneakers with a sole that bends easily in your hand. A beanie for colder outdoor time. Both pieces wash hard and come out fine, which is half of why I recommend them.
15. Baby Girl Striped Sweater And Leggings Outfit

Stripes are easy to coordinate if you pull the leggings color straight from the sweater. A cream sweater with rust stripes and solid rust ribbed leggings is the pairing I'd start with. A white bodysuit underneath stops a gap at the waist when she reaches up. Camel booties and neutral socks keep it from getting too colorful. A light cream jacket covers chilly walks. Narrow stripes photograph cleaner than wide ones on a small body, which is worth knowing if she'll be in pictures.
16. Baby Girl Navy Knit Dress Outfit

Navy is my quiet alternative when every other baby in the room is in rust and mustard. A navy knit dress with a white collar or small embroidered flowers looks polished on its own. Cream tights and tan Mary Janes soften the darker color, and a dusty rose cardigan adds warmth. For younger babies, I swap the shoes for caramel booties with an elastic ankle so they actually stay on. Navy also hides marks better than pastels, which helps at a birthday party with cake involved.
17. Baby Girl Teddy Jacket And Romper Outfit

Teddy jackets come out when the wind does. Start with a ribbed long-sleeve romper in warm brown, oatmeal tights or fitted leggings underneath, then a roomy ivory teddy jacket. Roomy matters: a teddy jacket that fits snugly at the shoulder pins her arms at her sides. Brown knitted booties and a ribbed beanie finish it. Indoors, open the jacket or take it off; teddy fleece holds a lot of heat and babies overheat quickly in a warm store. Wash it inside out on a cool cycle to keep the pile from matting.
18. Baby Girl Flare Pants And Ribbed Top Outfit

Tiny flares are fun, but I'm strict about length on a baby. The flare should end at her ankle, because fabric under her feet makes crawling and pulling up harder. Choose soft stretch flares in rust with an elastic waist and a fitted ribbed top in cream that snaps at the bottom, so it can't creep up. A cropped knit cardigan keeps the flare visible. Matching socks with cream sneakers for walkers, soft booties for infants. A fabric bow can echo the pants for a casual photo.
19. Baby Girl Floral Romper Photo Outfit

For an outdoor photo session, a floral romper does most of the coordinating for you. Choose a muted print with burgundy, blush and olive, then pull your family's colors from those same flowers. A romper with long sleeves, a gathered waist and snaps keeps her comfortable between shots. Layer a solid burgundy cardigan over it, add cream ribbed tights and brown Mary Janes. A small bow in one of the floral shades ties it together. She'll still be comfortable for lunch afterward, which is more than I can say for most photo outfits.
20. Baby Girl Rain Jacket And Leggings Outfit

Damp days need a layer that actually sheds water. A lightweight waterproof jacket in sage goes over a cream sweatshirt and berry leggings with a stretchy waist. Check the jacket's lining: a smooth mesh or cotton lining breathes, while a bare plastic inside gets clammy on a baby within minutes. Confident walkers can wear flexible rain boots with thick socks, since boots run loose on small feet; crawlers do fine in water-resistant booties. A fitted cotton beanie under the hood stops it sliding over her eyes. Good for errands and the park once the rain eases.
Velvet, Cable Knit and Corduroy in the Wash
Baby clothes get washed far more often than ours, and autumn fabrics are the ones that show it. A few habits keep these pieces looking new for younger siblings or resale.
Cable knits
Wash on a gentle cycle in cool water and dry them flat on a towel. Hanging a wet knit pulls the cables long and stretches the neck. If little pills appear at the elbows, take them off with a fabric shaver rather than pulling at them.
Corduroy
Turn it inside out before washing so the ribs don't rub against everything else and flatten. Shake it out and pull the seams straight while damp, and it rarely needs ironing.
Velvet
Check the label first, since cotton and silk velvets behave differently from the polyester ones most baby dresses use. For machine-washable velvet, wash inside out on cold and hang it to dry. Never press it flat with an iron; a few minutes in a steamy bathroom lifts crushed pile far better.
Bodysuits First, Then Everything Else
Nearly every outfit here starts with the same foundation: a breathable bodysuit and a flexible bottom. Add cardigans, vests, tights or a light jacket as the weather asks, and you can mix most of these pieces across several looks. I keep the base in earthy neutrals and let berry, mustard, sage or dusty pink come in through one piece at a time. Easy fastenings and diaper-friendly shapes matter more than any print, and shoes should match where she is right now, not where she'll be next month. That's enough to keep her warm through stroller walks, family visits and long days of play.
