Most people don't struggle with special-occasion outfits in winter. They struggle with Tuesday: the school run, a coffee, an errand that turns into lunch. The answer is a handful of casual formulas where every layer has a job. Below are twenty of them, built on denim, leggings, trousers, skirts and dresses, so there's something for different shapes, ages and climates. Most start from neutrals, with burgundy, olive, chocolate and soft blue for color. Each one can be pushed warmer with a thermal layer and a heavier coat, or lighter with a jacket, as the weeks get colder.

What Goes Next to Your Skin When It's Properly Cold
Every outfit below can be made warmer, but the layer that does the most is the one nobody sees. I always sort out a client's base layers before buying another sweater, because a good thin layer underneath lets you wear lighter, better-looking pieces on top.
Fibers that hold heat
- Merino wool is my first choice. It stays warm when you sweat a little walking between shops, doesn't hold odor and is fine-gauge enough to disappear under a fitted turtleneck.
- Silk is the thinnest option and works well under shirts and close sweaters, though it's less hard-wearing.
- Synthetic thermals are cheap and quick-drying, but they can feel clammy indoors and tend to hold smells.
- Plain cotton is the one I avoid as a base on cold, active days. Once it's damp it stays damp, and that's when you get chilly.
Making it invisible
Match the neckline to what goes over it: a scoop or crew under crewnecks, a turtleneck thermal under turtlenecks. Choose skin tone or the same color as the sweater under thin or pale knits, since white shows through cream. Long sleeves should be a little shorter than your sweater sleeves so they never peek out at the wrist.
1. Autumn Winter Sweater And Straight-Leg Jeans Outfit

If I could keep only one cold-weather outfit, it would be this. A crewneck or mock-neck sweater in cream, gray, burgundy or forest green over mid- or high-rise straight jeans that skim the leg. Tuck the front a little to show your waist, or leave it out for a softer line. Leather ankle boots, a long wool-blend coat and a medium crossbody. Small hoops are enough. The straight leg is the reason it repeats so well, since it sits cleanly over a boot without bunching. Add a thermal top underneath when it really drops. Petite women look sharper in a cropped jean with a sleek boot; tall women can go full length with a longer coat.
2. Autumn Winter Cardigan And Wide-Leg Jeans Outfit

Wide-leg jeans and a chunky cardigan are both roomy, so the trick is a close-fitting layer between them. A plain white or black long-sleeve tee does that job. Choose high-waisted denim so the volume starts at your natural waist rather than your hip. Platform sneakers are fine on dry autumn days; lug-sole ankle boots are better once it's wet. A structured tote and a plain leather belt. A hip-length cardigan shows your waist, while a long one covers more. I usually roll the cardigan sleeves once, because a big knit with sleeves past the knuckles makes most people look smaller than they are.
3. Autumn Winter Turtleneck And Bootcut Jeans Outfit

This is a quietly seventies outfit, and the fit of the jeans decides whether it works. A ribbed turtleneck in black, camel, chocolate or ivory, tucked into dark bootcut denim. Hem the jeans while wearing the boots you'll actually use, pointed with a low or medium block heel, so the denim almost touches the floor at the back without dragging. A cropped suede jacket or a fitted wool coat sits above the flare rather than covering it. Shoulder bag, slim belt, a little gold. If you want more room around the middle, an open cardigan over the turtleneck does it without hiding the shape.
4. Autumn Winter Hoodie And Wool Coat Outfit

I like a hoodie under a smart wool coat because the contrast makes both pieces look intentional. A solid hoodie in gray, cream, navy or black under a camel, charcoal or checked coat, with straight jeans or relaxed trousers. Leather sneakers when it's dry, waterproof Chelsea boots when it isn't. Wear the crossbody over the coat. The hoodie is where this goes wrong: a thick fleece one bunches at the shoulders and pulls the coat out of shape, so look for a medium-weight cotton. Lay the hood flat over the collar. For more warmth, add a fitted long-sleeve shirt underneath and wool socks inside the shoes.
5. Autumn Winter Blazer And Relaxed Jeans Outfit

Relaxed jeans can look sloppy on their own, and a blazer fixes that instantly. Pair loose straight jeans with a white tee or a thin knit, then an oversized blazer in black, brown, navy or herringbone. Keep the tee close to the body, because two loose layers plus loose jeans lose your shape completely. Loafers with socks look right in autumn; ankle boots take over in winter. A structured bag and a belt that matches the shoes. If oversized swamps you, choose a blazer that ends near the top of the hip. A soft single-button blazer suits curves, and petite frames often need a slightly cropped cut.
6. Autumn Winter Puffer Jacket And Leggings Outfit

For cold, active days, a puffer over leggings is hard to beat, and it's what I'd wear for a long walk or a day of errands on foot. Thick black leggings with a long sweatshirt, quarter-zip fleece or oversized knit that covers the seat. A hip-length or longline puffer depending on the cold. Cushioned sneakers when it's dry; weather-resistant lace-up boots for rain, slush or light snow. Crew socks, a beanie and a belt bag across the body. Hold leggings up to the light before buying: thin ones go see-through when you bend. A wide waistband sits smoother. An all-black base lets a colored puffer stand out.
7. Autumn Winter Trench Coat And Dark Jeans Outfit

A trench is my favorite coat for the in-between weeks when mornings are cool but not freezing. Wear it over a striped sweater or a fitted long-sleeve top with dark straight jeans. Tan, stone, olive and chocolate trenches all go with the usual seasonal basics. Loafers and socks in mild weather, Chelsea boots when it turns. A compact shoulder bag and sunglasses. Leave it open, or knot the belt behind your back for a hint of waist without the formal look of a tied front. Most trenches are cotton gabardine, which handles drizzle but not a downpour. On colder days, a thin down vest underneath keeps your core warm and doesn't change the coat's line.
8. Autumn Winter Leather Jacket And Black Jeans Outfit

Leather jacket and black jeans is a tough combination, so I soften it with a knit. A cream sweater, gray sweatshirt or striped top, then straight or relaxed black denim. A biker jacket is the edgy version; a collarless or bomber cut is quieter. Black ankle boots carry the dark line; white sneakers break it up. Small crossbody, silver or gold hoops. Faux leather is a fair choice if you prefer it, though it doesn't mold to you over time the way real leather does. Try the jacket on with your thickest sweater, since a closely fitted biker often won't close over one. On truly cold days, wear a long wool coat over the whole thing.
9. Autumn Winter Denim Jacket And Corduroy Pants Outfit

Cords and a denim jacket feel most at home in early autumn, when it's cool but not yet bitter. Straight or wide-leg corduroy in rust, olive, tan, burgundy or chocolate, with a white tee or fine sweater and a medium or dark denim jacket. Suede ankle boots match the soft texture; retro sneakers keep it casual. Canvas tote or leather crossbody, and a light scarf if needed. Wide cords want a short jacket, while a longer denim layer is better over slimmer cords. Wider wales add visual bulk, so if you'd rather not widen your hips, choose a fine-wale cord. Later in winter, switch to a lined denim jacket or wear it under a wool coat.
10. Autumn Winter Shacket And Flared Leggings Outfit

A shacket gives a leggings outfit just enough structure to look put together. Fitted long-sleeve top or mock-neck, black flared leggings, then a plaid, camel, olive or cream shacket. The roomy shacket balances the narrow hip and the flare below the knee. Chunky sneakers are sporty; platform Chelsea boots handle wet weather better. Roomy tote, studs, a cap or beanie. Flared leggings have one fussy point: the hem. Check it in your shoes, because it should hit the top of the foot and stay off the wet pavement. A shacket that stops at the upper thigh covers you and keeps the proportions right.
11. Autumn Winter Sweater Dress And Knee-High Boots Outfit

On mornings when I can't face decisions, a sweater dress is the answer: one piece and you're nearly dressed. Choose ribbed, cable or smooth knit in a straight shape or with a soft waist. Midi and knee lengths look natural with knee-high boots. Opaque tights, then a long wool coat that ends near the dress hem. A structured crossbody and small earrings. A slim belt adds shape, but don't cinch it tight, or the knit puckers above and below. Petite women can choose a shorter hem with tights and boots in the same color; tall women carry a long midi easily. A thin slip underneath stops the knit clinging to tights.
12. Autumn Winter Knit Skirt And Tall Boots Outfit

A knit midi skirt feels like lounge pants and looks much more dressed. Wear it with its matching sweater as a set, or with a contrasting fitted turtleneck. Weight is everything here. A heavy knit drapes and swings, while a thin one clings to the hips and shows every seam underneath. Knee-high boots under the hem keep your legs covered. Up top, a cropped puffer, a belted wool coat or a short shearling-style jacket. A fitted skirt needs a slightly relaxed sweater; an A-line one wants a closer top. Opaque tights and tall socks add warmth nobody sees.
13. Autumn Winter Midi Skirt And Chunky Sweater Outfit

A chunky sweater over a midi skirt is a texture pairing I come back to every winter. Choose a satin, pleated, denim or wool-blend skirt in a neutral or a quiet print and tuck a little of the knit at the front to keep the waist. The boot matters more than people think. An ankle boot with a close shaft avoids the awkward gap of bare leg under the hem, and tall boots are warmer still. Long coat, medium shoulder bag. A very thick sweater needs a slim skirt, or the outfit turns into two big shapes. Thermal tights make a satin skirt workable in real cold.
14. Autumn Winter Plaid Skirt And Turtleneck Outfit

Plaid is pattern without effort. An A-line or pleated plaid midi with a fitted black, cream or burgundy turtleneck, opaque tights and knee-high or sleek ankle boots. A cropped wool jacket keeps the waist visible; a long coat is warmer. A plain scarf in one of the plaid's colors ties it together, plus a structured bag and studs. For something subtler, look for small checks in gray, brown and navy, which read almost as a texture from a distance. An elastic-back waistband is worth hunting for if you sit a lot. It suits almost any age.
15. Autumn Winter Quilted Jacket And Cargo Pants Outfit

Quilted jacket and cargo pants lean outdoorsy, which is exactly why they're good for muddy park walks. Begin with a thermal, a striped shirt or a crewneck, then straight or slightly tapered cargos in olive, black, stone or brown. A light quilted jacket for crisp autumn, a lined one for colder days. Lace-up boots or sturdy sneakers, and a utility crossbody. Cargos with flat pockets look cleaner than ones covered in flaps and zips. Roll the hem once to show off boots, or keep it full length for warmth. Two loose pieces look sloppy, so either the base or the jacket should have some shape at the waist.
16. Autumn Winter Bomber Jacket And Wide-Leg Trousers Outfit

A bomber turns tailored wide-leg trousers into weekend clothes. Start with a slim crewneck or fitted tee, then high-waisted trousers in charcoal, navy, camel or black. A cropped bomber stops at the waist, which balances the wide leg. Clean sneakers keep it everyday; lug-sole loafers with socks are a bit smarter. Soft tote or compact shoulder bag. Bomber length is the fit point: if you have a long torso, a slightly longer bomber avoids a gap at the waistband, while petite frames suit one that ends right at it. When it's cold, add a thermal tank and pick a padded bomber with a high collar.
17. Autumn Winter Monochrome Knit And Trousers Outfit

Wearing one color family is the easiest trick I know for making comfortable separates look planned. Cream with ivory, chocolate with brown, charcoal with gray. The shades shouldn't match exactly; slight differences keep each piece visible. Ankle boots or simple sneakers in a related neutral and a long coat in the same family. A textured bag, a plain belt and fine jewelry give a little contrast. Pale tonal outfits show every coffee splash, so if that worries you, try navy, burgundy, olive or deep brown instead. Mix fabrics too, such as rib knit, wool trousers and smooth leather, or the whole thing flattens out.
18. Autumn Winter Button-Down And Sweater Vest Outfit

A sweater vest over a shirt adds warmth to your core without bulk in the sleeves, which means a coat still goes on easily. Choose a crisp white, blue or striped shirt and a neutral or soft-colored vest. Straight jeans for casual days, relaxed trousers to dress it up. Let the shirt hem peek out under the vest, or tuck both for a neater waist. Loafers with socks in autumn, Chelsea boots in winter, a structured tote and a tailored coat. A V-neck vest lengthens the upper body; a crewneck looks more traditional. Choose a vest with wool in it, since acrylic doesn't hold heat nearly as well.
19. Autumn Winter Sherpa Jacket And Straight-Leg Pants Outfit

Sherpa is warm and soft, and it's the jacket I'd hand someone who always feels cold. Wear it over a ribbed long-sleeve top or a light sweater with straight jeans, ponte pants or casual trousers. Cream, tan, camel and chocolate feel seasonal, but cream sherpa shows dirt quickly and mats if it's washed hot, so black or navy are easier to live with. Weather-resistant ankle boots, supportive sneakers, or clogs with thick socks. A crossbody, not a big shoulder bag that crushes the pile. Keep the pants fairly slim under a big jacket. Cropped sherpa suits high-waisted bottoms. Skip other fuzzy textures.
20. Autumn Winter Long Coat And Matching Lounge Set Outfit

A matching lounge set can leave the house if you put a proper coat over it. Choose a knitted or heavy jersey set, with a crewneck, half-zip or cardigan top and straight-leg pants. A long wool coat creates a clean vertical line over it. Leather sneakers for relaxed days, streamlined ankle boots for something sharper. A structured tote, sunglasses and small hoops make it look intentional. Thin jersey is the giveaway that you're in pajamas, so choose a fabric with enough body to hold a crease. Avoid pants that pool at the feet, especially when it's wet. Petite women suit an ankle-length set; tall women can go full-length wide-leg. Keep set and coat neutral.
Try a Winter Coat On Over Your Thickest Sweater
Half the outfits here end with a wool coat, and the most common mistake I see is a coat bought in a light top in a warm shop. It looks neat until January, when it won't button over a chunky knit. Take your bulkiest sweater with you and check these points before paying.
- Reach forward as if you're holding a steering wheel. If the back pulls tight across your shoulder blades, go up a size.
- Button it and sit down. The coat shouldn't strain at the hip or pop open at the lowest button.
- Check the sleeve with your arm bent. It should still cover your wrist bone, or cold air gets in between the cuff and a glove.
- Look at the length with your usual boots. A coat that ends at the widest part of your calf cuts the leg, while just above or below the knee is easier to wear.
Why sweaters pill, and what slows it down
Pills form where knits rub: under the arms, at the sides where a bag sits and on the cuffs. Short, loose fibers and soft blends pill fastest. Wash knits inside out on a cold, gentle cycle, dry them flat, and shave pills off with a fabric shaver rather than pulling them, which loosens more fiber. Alternating sweaters through the week gives each one a rest, and they last noticeably longer for it.
Twenty Formulas for the Days Nobody Plans For
A cold-weather wardrobe gets easier once you stop buying single pieces and start thinking in formulas. Every look above is just a sweater, a bottom, a shoe and a coat that agree with one another. Start with the two or three that fit your routine and your climate, then adjust the color, the proportions and the layers for your own shape. You don't need a new wardrobe for variety. Change the coat or the shoe and the same jeans and sweater read differently. I'd take a photo of each combination you like on a good day and keep them on your phone, so the next freezing morning comes with an answer already.
