This autumn's shows and street style kept circling back to a handful of ideas: suede, leopard, burgundy, workwear jackets, floaty boho dresses and office tailoring worn more loosely. I don't think anyone should chase all of them. What I've done here is turn each one into an outfit you could get dressed in tomorrow, with layers, shoes and a bag already worked out, plus notes on adjusting the shape for your height, figure and climate. Some lean neutral and some lean bold; take the two or three that suit how you actually live.

Trying a Trend With Clothes You Already Own
Before I let anyone buy into a trend, I ask them to fake it from their own closet for a week. Most of this season's ideas can be tested that way for nothing, and you'll learn quickly whether you like wearing it or only like looking at it.
- Burgundy: try a burgundy scarf, bag or lipstick with outfits you already wear. If you reach for it every day, a sweater or boots will earn their keep.
- Loose tailoring: borrow a partner's or friend's blazer one size up. If the shoulders work for you, you'll know which cut to shop for.
- Boho: put a long skirt or floral dress you own under a structured jacket. That's the whole trick, and it tells you whether you like the volume.
- Leopard: start with shoes, a belt or a scarf. A small dose shows you whether the print feels like you before you commit to a whole dress.
When something passes that test, buy the best version you can of the piece you'll wear most. When it fails, you've saved money on something that would have hung in the closet with the tags on.
1. Burgundy Cardigan and Wide-Leg Jeans Autumn Outfit

Burgundy is the easiest of this season's colors to start with, because it behaves almost like a neutral and is kinder to most complexions than black. Wear a soft burgundy cardigan buttoned as a top, or open over a fitted cream tee, with dark indigo wide-leg jeans in a high rise. Pointed ankle boots sharpen the relaxed denim, and a chocolate bag ties the warm colors together. If you're petite, keep the cardigan cropped and let the jeans nearly skim the floor; taller frames can take a longer, looser knit. Gold earrings and a slim leather belt are all the finish it needs.
2. Suede Jacket and Maxi Skirt Autumn Outfit

A suede jacket over a maxi skirt is the one I'd try first if the boho revival tempts you. Camel or chocolate suede over a fitted ivory knit, then a black or deep olive skirt that moves: the crisp jacket keeps the skirt from looking like a festival outfit. Knee-high leather boots hide under the hem for warmth, with a slouchy shoulder bag and plain gold jewelry. A waist-length jacket shows your shape; a longer one gives more coverage. I'd steer anyone who sits at a desk all day toward an elastic or adjustable waist on the skirt. And treat the suede with a protector before the first rain.
3. Leopard Print Midi Dress Autumn Outfit

Leopard looks loud on the hanger and surprisingly quiet once you surround it with black. I'd choose a midi dress with a flowing skirt, a defined waist and sleeves you can move in, then add a black leather jacket and tall black boots. A small burgundy bag adds color without fighting the print. Sheer black tights and plain hoops for colder days. If an all-over print feels like too much, look for a smaller spot or a darker ground, which reads as texture from across a room. Leaving the jacket open draws two vertical lines down the torso, which slims the print's visual width.
4. Barn Jacket and Straight-Leg Jeans Autumn Outfit

Barn jackets are workwear, which is exactly why they're easy: they were cut for moving, carrying and layering. Pick olive, tan or dark brown with a corduroy collar and put it over a striped knit and straight blue jeans. On mild days, loafers with visible socks; once it's cold or wet, swap to weatherproof ankle boots. A canvas and leather tote finishes it. I roll the cuffs once so the sweater shows. If the boxy cut hides your waist, find a shorter version or pull in the internal drawstring if it has one. Because each piece is practical, this one suits pretty much every age.
5. Gray Blazer and Pleated Trousers Autumn Outfit

Loose tailoring only looks intentional if the shoulders fit, and that's the first thing I check on an oversized blazer. The shoulder seam should sit at or just past your own shoulder, not halfway down the arm. Put a charcoal blazer over a white tee or fine knit, then pleated trousers in the same gray or a shade darker. Burgundy loafers bring color, a black tote keeps it office-ready, and a slim belt and watch finish it. Curvy figures usually do better in a single-breasted blazer that closes without pulling. Petite? Show the waistband or go ankle-length on the trouser.
6. Boho Maxi Dress and Knee-High Boots Autumn Outfit

A boho maxi gives you coverage and movement for in-between weather, but too many soft details at once tip it into costume. I'd pick one: a small floral print, gathered sleeves or a light ruffle, in rust, olive, navy or chocolate. Knee-high leather boots and a wide suede belt add the weight it needs. As it gets colder, add a cropped shearling jacket or a long wool coat. If you have a fuller bust, an open neckline breaks up the area better than a high ruffled one, and a fitted jacket gives the shape back. A soft shoulder bag and a couple of pendants are plenty.
7. Denim Shirt and Wide-Leg Jeans Autumn Outfit

Double denim looks deliberate when the two washes are clearly different. A medium-blue denim shirt tucked into dark indigo wide-leg jeans, a couple of buttons open over a white tank, and a brown leather belt between them so the halves don't blur. Pointed brown boots, a suede crossbody and simple gold finish it. Want more coverage? Wear the shirt open as a light jacket over a fitted long-sleeve top. I'd keep the jeans clean, with no rips or heavy fading, which is what makes it look grown-up. Shorter frames can try a slightly cropped shirt with high-rise denim, and a long camel coat takes it into November.
8. Trench Coat and White Jeans Autumn Outfit

White jeans carry on into autumn once you put deeper colors and heavier textures around them. Straight or wide-leg white denim, a fitted chocolate sweater and a tan trench do most of the work. Brown loafers or ankle boots depending on the weather, a burgundy bag and tortoiseshell sunglasses. If bright white feels too summery, ecru or cream is softer and shows less dirt. Check two things in the mirror: the fabric should be thick enough that pockets don't show through, and the hem should meet the top of your shoes. A silk or light wool scarf covers the chilly mornings.
9. Red Sweater and Chocolate Trousers Autumn Outfit

Red with chocolate brown is my favorite strong pairing this season because the brown calms the red down. Try a relaxed red crewneck with high-waisted brown trousers, wide or gently tapered, and dark brown pointed boots so the leg runs in one color. Tan bag, slim belt, small gold earrings. If true red is harsh next to your face, try cranberry, brick or a deep cherry instead; most people find one of those easier. A front half-tuck gives the sweater a waist without making it tight. Bolder color pairings like this are a welcome break from an all-neutral fall closet. Throw a camel coat on top when it's cold.
10. Plaid Midi Skirt and Cardigan Autumn Outfit

A plaid midi with a buttoned cardigan is about as classic as fall gets, and that's its strength. Choose an A-line or softly pleated skirt in brown, olive, navy or burgundy plaid and tuck a fitted cream cardigan in lightly at the waist. Knee-high boots under the longer hem keep you warm and the line smooth. A top-handle bag and small pearl or gold earrings finish it, with a cropped wool coat that doesn't hide the skirt. Pleats add volume at the hip, so if that's not what you want, go for a flatter A-line or a plaid with darker panels at the sides. Clean accessories keep it from feeling dated.
11. Leather Bomber and Column Skirt Autumn Outfit

A column skirt is narrow and long, so I want the jacket over it short and a little roomy. Start with a fitted black or cream turtleneck and a straight midi skirt in knit, denim or satin, then a slightly oversized brown or black leather bomber that stops at the waist or upper hip. Pointed ankle boots keep all that length from feeling heavy, and a compact shoulder bag fits the slim shape. Check there's a back slit or some stretch before you buy; straight skirts without either make stairs a problem. Keeping the base one color lengthens nearly any body.
12. Sweater Dress and Riding Boots Autumn Outfit

A sweater dress with tall riding boots is the outfit I recommend to anyone who wants autumn sorted with two pieces. The knit should skim, not cling, so look for a ribbed midi with some body to it in chocolate, charcoal, olive or warm beige. Flat or low-heeled riding boots, a medium leather belt if you want a waist, and a long wool coat over it. If you'd rather not draw attention to your middle, skip the belt and wear a long pendant to make a vertical line instead. Riding boots run narrow in the calf, so look for stretch panels or wide-calf sizing before you fall for a pair.
13. Oversized Sweater and Satin Midi Skirt Autumn Outfit

A chunky sweater against shiny satin is the contrast that makes this work. Pair an oversized oatmeal, gray or burgundy knit with a black, bronze or deep green satin midi. The volume needs controlling: a small front tuck, or a thin belt worn under the sweater at the waist, hides the excess. Sleek ankle boots and a structured shoulder bag balance it. Satin catches the light on every curve, so if that's not what you want, pick a heavier bias-cut satin or a darker print, which drape and reflect less. It's a good way to wear a dressy skirt on an ordinary Tuesday.
14. Pinstripe Blazer and Dark Jeans Autumn Outfit

Pinstripes are being worn more loosely now, away from the strict suit. My version: a navy or charcoal pinstripe blazer over a soft white shirt with dark straight-leg jeans, which take the business edge off. Burgundy loafers or low block-heel boots, plus a leather satchel. Leave the collar open and roll the blazer sleeves once. A blazer with gentle waist shaping follows curves; a straight oversized one looks more boyish. The jeans have to be clean and dark, because faded or ripped denim fights the tailoring rather than relaxing it.
15. Utility Jacket and Cargo Pants Autumn Outfit

Utility clothes look sloppy when everything is baggy, so I keep one fitted layer in the middle. Olive cargo pants in a straight or slightly tapered cut, a fitted cream knit, and a khaki utility jacket that stops at the hip. Brown leather ankle boots make the practical pieces look finished, and a crossbody keeps your hands free. A patterned scarf brings burgundy, navy or rust up near the face. If side pockets add width at the thigh, look for flatter pockets or ones set lower on the leg. With layers you can peel off, it handles markets, sightseeing and a day of errands.
16. Cape Coat and Mini Skirt Autumn Outfit

A cape coat adds a lot of width on top, so everything under it should be slim. A fitted black turtleneck, a tailored A-line mini, opaque tights and knee-high boots give the cape a narrow base to sit over. Camel, charcoal or deep red cape, then a structured handbag. If you'd rather not wear a mini, a knee-length skirt gives the same effect. Long gloves keep your arms warm without bulking under the cape. Before buying, check the arm slits: if you can't carry a bag or lift a coffee comfortably, you'll reach for a regular coat instead.
17. Polo Sweater and Barrel Jeans Autumn Outfit

Barrel jeans are the trickiest shape on this list, and a neat polo sweater makes them far easier. Tuck a fine-knit polo in navy, cream, forest or burgundy into high-rise denim, and choose a leg that curves gently rather than ballooning. Sleek loafers or pointed ankle boots offset the round shape. Brown belt, structured shoulder bag, small studs. If the full barrel feels like too much, try a subtle curve with an ankle-length hem first. Petite women should show the top of the shoe so the denim doesn't swamp them. Add a trench or short wool jacket when needed.
18. Matching Knit Set and Sneakers Autumn Outfit

A knit set and leather sneakers are my answer for long travel days and working from home without looking like it. Choose a ribbed sweater and midi skirt in camel, charcoal, navy or cream; wear the top cropped, half-tucked or over the waistband depending on how much coverage you like. Clean leather sneakers and a structured tote keep it sharp, and a light trench goes over it without squashing the knit. Belt it in a contrasting color for a waist, or stay tonal for length. I'd check the knit's weight before anything: a heavier yarn holds its shape, while a thin one clings to every line underneath, so a smooth underlayer helps.
19. Sheer Dress and Oversized Blazer Autumn Outfit

Sheer dresses get much easier once you treat them as two layers. Start with a long-sleeve mesh or chiffon midi in black, plum or a dark floral, put an opaque slip under it, and add an oversized charcoal or black blazer. Knee-high boots make it autumn-weight, and a clutch or shoulder bag keeps it dressy. A slip close to the dress color is quiet; a contrasting one shows off the pattern. A longer blazer covers the hips if you want more coverage. Sheer fabric and less formal takes on evening wear both had a strong season, and this is the version I'd wear to a gallery opening or dinner.
20. Long Coat and Monochrome Knit Autumn Outfit

An all-black knit base under a statement coat is the formula I fall back on most in cold weather. A fitted black turtleneck with black straight knit pants or ponte leggings, opaque and structured enough not to bag at the knees, then a long camel, gray or chocolate wool coat. Black ankle boots in the same tone as the pants keep the leg uninterrupted. Match the scarf to the coat rather than the black base, so the color frames your face. Belt the coat, or choose a slightly tailored one, if you want shape. It suits every age and size I can think of.
Wearing Print and Strong Color So It Looks Like You
The leopard, red and plaid looks above are the ones people worry about most, usually because they've seen them look costumey. The fix is almost always about dose and placement, not about avoiding the trend altogether.
One loud piece per outfit
Let one print or one strong color lead and keep the rest plain. Leopard with a burgundy bag works; leopard with a plaid scarf and red boots fights itself. If an outfit feels like too much, take off the smallest bold thing first and look again.
Put the color where you want attention
Strong color draws the eye. If you like your face and shoulders, wear the red sweater and keep the trousers dark. If you'd rather show your legs, flip it: deep plum boots or a burgundy skirt with a neutral top. Near the face, check the shade in daylight, not under shop lights, because warm reds and cool berries can look very different on you once you step outside.
And repeat your accent colors. A burgundy bag that turns up with three outfits makes the whole wardrobe feel planned rather than bought one trend at a time.
Which Trend Earns a Place in Your Closet?
None of this season's ideas are worth wearing if they're uncomfortable or don't fit your days. Burgundy, suede, leopard, loose tailoring, boho dresses and workwear jackets all show up here as complete outfits, but you only need the ones that match your weather and routine. Change the skirt length, heel height, jacket shape or layers until each look suits your proportions. A good coat, comfortable boots, a few strong knits and denim that fits will carry most of these. Get the color and silhouette right for you and fall dressing gets easier, and more like you.
