Fall mornings start cold and the afternoons often don't, so the clothes that feel cozy in September are really the ones you can peel off by lunch. This year leans toward rich browns, soft cardigans, suede and riding boots, but the basics you already own still do most of the work. Below are twenty outfits built from denim, knitwear, a few jackets, midi skirts and dresses, and shoes that cope with weather. For each one I've added the adjustment I'd make for a colder day, a different body shape or a different kind of plan, whether that's work, errands, classes or a slow weekend.

Why Some Sweaters Feel Cozy and Others Just Feel Heavy
Most of these outfits lean on a knit, and the fiber decides how warm it really is far more than the thickness. I check the label before I check the color.
- Wool traps warm air and still insulates a little when it gets damp, which is why a medium-weight wool sweater often beats a much thicker acrylic one. Merino is fine enough to wear against the skin.
- Alpaca and mohair give a lot of warmth for very little weight. They shed, so keep them away from dark trousers you care about.
- Cotton knits are soft but they hold moisture and feel cold once damp. They also stretch, so a cotton cardigan grows longer through the day.
- Acrylic looks plush in the shop, but it doesn't breathe, so you overheat indoors and then feel chilled outside. It also pills fast at the underarms and wherever a bag strap rubs.
A blend with some wool in it is a sensible middle ground. And fold your knits instead of hanging them; a heavy cable knit left on a hanger stretches at the shoulders and never quite recovers.
1. Chunky Sweater And Straight-Leg Jeans Autumn Outfit

This is the outfit I'd hand anyone who says they don't know where to start. A slightly relaxed cable-knit in cream or camel, high-rise straight-leg jeans, brown ankle boots and a structured crossbody. Tuck just the front of the sweater, because a thick knit tucked all the way round puffs out over the waistband and adds an inch at the hip. Length matters more than color here. On a petite frame I'd pick a sweater that stops at the hip bone; a longer split-hem knit suits taller or curvier women and covers the seat of the jeans. When it's properly cold, a long wool coat and a soft scarf go straight over the top.
2. Oversized Cardigan And Wide-Leg Jeans Autumn Outfit

An oversized cardigan feels like a blanket you're allowed to wear outside. The trick is keeping what's underneath slim: a fitted crew-neck tee or a thin turtleneck, then high-waisted wide-leg jeans that skim rather than balloon. Two loose pieces plus a loose top layer is where this goes wrong, and you end up looking lost in fabric. Loafers or low ankle boots, a leather shoulder bag, small hoops. If the cardigan is patterned, keep everything else plain. Buttoned, belted or slung over a chair by noon, it's the most adjustable layer on this list.
3. Knit Dress And Knee-High Boots Autumn Outfit

A ribbed knit midi dress is one piece doing the job of three. Long sleeves, a clean column shape, and knee-high boots with a low block heel so you can actually walk in them. Belt it if you like definition; I often leave it as a straight column because ribbing already draws the eye vertically. Thin ribbed knits cling to everything underneath, so I check the fabric weight against the light before anything else. If it's see-through at the hip, size up or wear smoothing shorts. A tailored wool coat or longline cardigan over the top, a structured tote, and it reads smart enough for an office or a family lunch where jeans feel too casual.
4. Plaid Shacket And Black Leggings Autumn Outfit

For a fully relaxed day, a long-sleeve fitted tee, opaque black leggings and an oversized plaid shacket. The shacket needs to reach below the hip, otherwise leggings look like you forgot your trousers. Brushed flannel drapes and moves; stiff, heavily lined shackets stand away from the body and make the outfit look boxy. Lug-sole boots give it an outdoorsy feel, white sneakers keep it lighter. Add ribbed socks and a beanie when it turns colder. My cheapest warmth trick here is a thin quilted vest under the shacket, which keeps your core warm without bulking up the arms.
5. Turtleneck And Pleated Midi Skirt Autumn Outfit

Could a skirt feel as cozy as jeans? With a fitted turtleneck tucked in and boots that close the gap, yes. Chocolate, burgundy or olive pleats move nicely when you walk, and a thin ribbed turtleneck keeps the top half neat against all that volume. The detail I always check is the space between hem and boot: knee-high boots should disappear under the skirt, so no bare shin shows. Opaque tights on cooler days, then a cropped jacket or a belted wool coat. Fine pleats are kinder to the hip than wide box pleats if you'd rather not add width there.
6. Sweatshirt And Satin Midi Skirt Autumn Outfit

A plain sweatshirt with a satin midi skirt sounds odd until you try it. The matte cotton next to the shine of the skirt is what makes it look intentional. Gray, navy or deep green sweatshirts with no logo, slightly tucked at the front so the skirt waistband shows. Low sneakers for daytime, ankle boots if you're dressing it up. Satin shows every crease and static, so I'd steam it before wearing and skip it entirely on a rainy day, as water spots on satin can leave marks. A cropped sweatshirt gives more waist definition than a long one. For an outer layer, a trench or a wool blazer suits the skirt better than a puffer.
7. Trench Coat And Dark Jeans Autumn Outfit

A trench is the coat for the in-between days when wool is too much. Underneath, a striped sweater or a plain long-sleeve tee, dark straight-leg jeans and leather loafers. Wear it open for a long vertical line, or tie the belt at the back, which pulls in the extra fabric without the cinched look of a front knot. Most cotton trenches are water-resistant, not waterproof, so in a steady downpour you'll still get damp at the shoulders. If rain is likely, pick shoes with grippy soles, because smooth loafer soles slip on wet pavement. Dark denim keeps it smart enough for a casual meeting.
8. Sweater Vest And Button-Down Shirt Autumn Outfit

Layering gets easier when every layer is thin. A relaxed sweater vest over a crisp cotton button-down, collar and cuffs showing, then straight trousers or dark jeans. Loafers with ribbed socks feel classic; sneakers make it weekend. Vests with side slits sit better over the hip and don't ride up when you sit. The shirt hem should peek out an inch or so below the vest, not several inches, or the shirt starts to look untucked by accident. In a cold office or an overheated classroom, this is the outfit you can adjust without taking anything off in public.
9. Barn Jacket And Corduroy Pants Autumn Outfit

A barn jacket in olive or tan, ideally with a corduroy collar, is built for weather and it wears in rather than out. I size it so a sweater fits underneath without the sleeves pulling across the back when you reach forward. Under it, a light crew-neck or striped knit, then straight or slightly flared corduroy pants. Cord on cord can look heavy, so keep the knit smooth. Leather ankle boots, a canvas tote and a patterned scarf finish it. Petite frames do better with a hip-length jacket; the longer field cuts can cut you off mid-thigh. Waxed cotton versions shed rain, but they need re-waxing now and then to keep doing it.
10. Denim Jacket And Knit Maxi Dress Autumn Outfit

Early fall is often too warm for a coat and too cool for a bare dress. A denim jacket over a knit maxi dress sits in that gap. The jacket should end near your natural waist, because that's what gives a long dress some structure; a longer denim jacket just hides the shape and shortens your legs. A rust or charcoal dress, ankle boots or slim sneakers, a shoulder bag. If you want more shape, belt the dress under the open jacket. When it gets colder, opaque tights and a blanket scarf keep it going another few weeks.
11. Wool Blazer And Relaxed Jeans Autumn Outfit

A wool blazer is the quickest way I know to make cozy basics look like you meant them. A cotton tee, fine-knit sweater or turtleneck, relaxed straight jeans, and a slightly oversized blazer in brown herringbone or gray plaid. Check the shoulder seam first: it can sit a little past your shoulder for a relaxed fit, but if it drops halfway to the elbow the blazer looks borrowed. Push the sleeves up a touch to show your wrists. For warmth, a thin thermal under the top beats a chunky knit under the blazer, which strains the buttons. Loafers make it smart; sneakers relax it.
12. Puffer Vest And Flared Leggings Autumn Outfit

On days spent moving, keep the core warm and the arms free. A fitted long-sleeve or a light half-zip, flared leggings in black or espresso, and a quilted puffer vest. Supportive sneakers, ribbed socks, a cap and a belt bag. Leggings are where this outfit is won or lost: thick, matte fabric with a waistband that stays up when you bend down. Thin, shiny pairs go see-through and roll at the waist. A vest that reaches the upper thigh gives more coverage. Matching vest and leggings lengthens the legs, which helps the flare read as a choice rather than a throwback.
13. Leather Jacket And Sweater Dress Autumn Outfit

Leather over a soft sweater dress is one of my favorite texture contrasts. A relaxed midi knit in cream or burgundy, a black or brown leather jacket, ankle boots with a stable heel, opaque tights if it's chilly. The jacket must stop well above the dress hem; if the two lengths are too close, the outfit looks like it shrank. A classic biker jacket can feel stiff, and a collarless leather jacket or a soft bomber is easier with knit. Leather softens with wear but it does dry out, so I'd condition it once a season. Minimal jewelry lets the two textures do the talking.
14. Matching Knit Set Autumn Outfit

A matching knit set is the least thinking you'll do all week. A relaxed sweater with wide-leg pants, in a knit thick enough to drape without turning see-through or bagging at the knee after an hour of sitting. Taupe, charcoal or chocolate look more deliberate than gray marl, which can read as loungewear. Clean leather sneakers or loafers, a long wool coat over the top, a structured tote. The pant hem should nearly touch the shoe; knit trousers that drag on the ground get dirty fast and stretch at the hem. Good for flights, long car rides and working from home.
15. Flannel Shirt And Straight-Leg Jeans Autumn Outfit

A flannel shirt over a fitted tee with straight jeans is fall dressing at its most familiar, which is exactly why fit matters. The shirt should fit easily through the shoulders and close over the hips without strain, then hang open. Too big and it looks borrowed. Rust or green plaid over white or black, leather lace-up boots or sneakers, a canvas crossbody and a wool beanie. When it gets colder, a quilted vest or utility jacket goes on top. Cotton flannel softens and pills a little with washing, so turn it inside out and skip the high heat in the dryer.
16. Long Cardigan And Midi Dress Autumn Outfit

A long cardigan over a midi dress turns a summer dress into a fall one. I keep both in the same color family, like a cream dress under camel or black under charcoal, which gives one long, calm line. The cardigan should hang from the shoulder and drape, not cling, especially over a full skirt where a tight knit catches and bunches. Knee-high boots, a belt if you want one, a medium bag. Length is the petite question here: a knee-length cardigan keeps a shorter frame in proportion, while taller women can wear one that skims mid-calf.
17. Hoodie And Tailored Trousers Autumn Outfit

A hoodie with tailored trousers works because the trousers do the formal half of the job. Pick a plain hoodie in smooth, heavy fleece with no big graphic, and high-waisted trousers in black, camel or charcoal with a proper crease. Slim sneakers, a structured crossbody, and a long wool coat with enough room in the shoulders that the hood sits outside the collar without bunching. A small front tuck of the hoodie shows the trouser waistband and keeps it from looking like gym wear. Thin, pilled hoodies don't work here; the fabric has to hold its shape.
18. Corduroy Overshirt And Black Jeans Autumn Outfit

Corduroy adds instant fall texture to black jeans. An overshirt in caramel or olive over a plain fitted top, black straight-leg jeans, Chelsea boots and a leather belt that roughly matches the bag. Wear it open on mild days and buttoned with a scarf when it drops. Wide-wale cord looks warmer and more casual than fine pinwale, which passes for smarter offices. A longer cut covers the hips; a cropped one with high-rise denim shows the waist. Corduroy flattens at the elbows over time, so I wash it inside out and don't iron the right side.
19. Teddy Coat And Monochrome Knit Outfit

When the temperature really drops, a teddy coat makes getting dressed feel less like a chore. Underneath, keep it smooth and tonal: a fitted knit and matching straight or wide-leg pants in cream, brown or charcoal. The coat adds a lot of bulk, so anything chunky under it doubles your width. Check the shoulders before you buy, because a teddy coat that's tight across the back pulls when you drive or carry a bag. Chunky boots with grip, a structured handbag to sharpen all that softness, a tonal scarf. Brush the pile gently after wear if it starts to mat at the cuffs.
20. Cable-Knit Sweater And Corduroy Skirt Autumn Outfit

Cable-knit and corduroy are two of fall's oldest textures, and together they feel warm before you've even reached the coat. An ivory or soft gray sweater, an A-line cord midi skirt in burgundy or olive, opaque tights and knee-high boots. Tuck the sweater fully or at the front, since a loose cable knit over an A-line skirt hides the waist completely and makes you look square. Keep the bag small and jewelry delicate so the outfit doesn't get heavy. If a midi swamps you, the same skirt shape at knee length does the job.
Thin Layers Beat One Thick Sweater
The cozy outfits that fail are usually the ones with a single heavy layer. You're cold at the bus stop, too hot in the shop, and there's nothing to take off. Three thin layers solve that, because each one traps a little air and each one can come off on its own.
- Next to the skin, something smooth and close-fitting: a fine knit, a long-sleeve tee or a thin thermal. If it's itchy you'll want it off within an hour.
- In the middle, the piece people see: the cardigan, the shacket, the sweater vest. This is the one you remove indoors, so it should look finished on its own.
- Outside, the coat or jacket, sized for what goes under it. Put your middle layer on before you try a coat in the shop; a coat that fits over a tee will be tight over a cable knit.
Thick on thick is where bulk comes from. A chunky sweater under a fitted wool coat bunches at the armholes and makes the sleeves ride up. If the top layer is plush, like teddy or a heavy shacket, keep everything under it thin. If the knit is the star, wear an open coat or a vest over it.
Hands, neck and feet lose heat fastest, so a scarf and warm socks often do more than a heavier sweater. They're also the easiest things to stash in a bag when the afternoon turns mild.
Your Jeans and One Good Knit Go a Long Way
None of this asks for a new wardrobe. Start with the jeans, leggings, plain tops and simple dresses you already wear, then add warmth one layer at a time with a cardigan, a coat, boots or a scarf. You won't need every piece shown here. Change a color, a hem length or a bag and an outfit becomes yours. The parts I'd spend on are fabrics that feel good against your skin and shoes that suit what your day actually involves, because those are what decide whether a fall outfit stays comfortable past lunch.
