Most of the men I dress for autumn don't need new clothes so much as a better order to wear them in. This year's direction leans on workwear jackets, softer tailoring and roomier trousers in steady neutrals, and nearly all of that can be built from basics you already own. The trick is texture: suede, wool, corduroy, denim and brushed cotton do more work in October than any colour. I've grouped these outfits so they cover a weekday office, a wet commute, a weekend outdoors and a cold evening out. Treat each one as a formula you can swap pieces into, not a shopping list.

Sizing an Outer Layer Around the Sweater Under It
Almost every outfit here is three layers deep, and the most common fitting mistake I see is buying the jacket over a T-shirt in a shop and then wondering why it strains in November. Bring the thickest knit you plan to wear underneath, or at least wear a similar weight, when you try on a jacket or coat.
- Reach forward as if grabbing a steering wheel. If the back pulls tight across the shoulder blades, size up or choose a cut with an action back.
- Check the shoulder seam. It should sit at the edge of your shoulder bone, or just past it on a deliberately relaxed jacket, never halfway down the arm.
- Look at the sleeve with your arms hanging. About half an inch of shirt or sweater cuff showing is right for a coat; a jacket sleeve covering the knuckles is too long.
- Button it and sit down. A jacket that flares open at the hem or rides up at the collar when you sit will look worse after an hour of driving.
Trouser length matters just as much with this season's wider legs. I aim for a slight break on boots and loafers and almost no break on sneakers. If a pair is too long, a tailor can take it up for far less than you'd spend replacing it, and the change in how the whole outfit hangs is bigger than people expect.
1. Chore Jacket And Straight Jeans Autumn Outfit

I reach for a chore jacket when a client wants something sturdier than a cardigan but nowhere near a coat. Navy, olive or faded brown all work over a heavyweight white tee or an Oxford shirt, and straight dark jeans keep the jacket's boxy cut from swallowing the hips. Brown suede chukkas and a matching belt finish it. The detail I check first is the sleeve: chore jackets often run long, and a cuff that covers the knuckles makes the whole thing look borrowed. Leave room inside for a grey crewneck, and let the jeans fall with a slight break rather than stacking.
2. Suede Jacket And Pleated Trousers Autumn Outfit

Suede in tobacco or chocolate is the quickest way I know to make a plain outfit look considered. A suede bomber or trucker over a cream knit polo, with charcoal pleated trousers underneath, breaks up the browns so it never reads as one muddy block. Dark loafers and tonal socks keep the lower half quiet. Size the polo with a little ease, because a tight knit pulls across the chest and shows every crease of the jacket's lining. One honest caution: suede marks at the cuffs and pocket edges first, so this is a jacket for dry days and lunches, not a rainy bike commute.
3. Barn Jacket And Corduroy Pants Autumn Outfit

Pick the barn jacket with the corduroy collar; that contrast is half its charm. Olive or tan over a light blue Oxford and a burgundy or forest crewneck gives three textures before you even reach the trousers. Brown corduroy pants and dark leather boots finish it, and a canvas tote suits the workwear mood better than a sleek bag. I deliberately keep the browns a shade apart, because matching them exactly is what tips a country outfit into costume. A straight or gently tapered leg suits most builds and leaves the thigh room that wide-wale cord needs to hang properly.
4. Leather Bomber And Black Jeans Autumn Outfit

A leather bomber earns its place by ending right at the waistband, which is why it pairs so well with higher-rise jeans. I go a size that leaves room for a fine-gauge grey crewneck rather than chasing a tight motorcycle fit; stiff new leather only softens where it can move. Black straight jeans and black boots make a clean column, and a silver watch is enough jewellery. If the all-dark version flattens you in photos or evening light, put an off-white knit or pale grey scarf near the face. It's the jacket I'd suggest for concerts and dinners where a sweatshirt feels underdressed.
5. Oversized Blazer And Wide Leg Trousers Autumn Outfit

Relaxed tailoring is where this season's bigger silhouette is easiest to wear. Start with a softly structured charcoal blazer, a white or pale blue shirt tucked in, and wide-leg wool trousers held with a black belt. The jacket can run a little oversized, but I always check the shoulder seam first: if it drops past the edge of the shoulder bone, the blazer looks slept in rather than relaxed. Black loafers or sleek derbies, dark socks, and a narrow knitted tie in navy if you want one. Hem the trousers so they just kiss the shoe. Shorter men should keep the leg width moderate, since a very wide cut over a short leg reads as a skirt of fabric.
6. Denim Jacket And Khaki Chinos Autumn Outfit

For the days that are too cool for a tee and too mild for wool, a dark indigo denim jacket is my default. Over a heather grey sweatshirt or a striped long-sleeve, it layers without fuss, and khaki chinos lift the darker top half better than a second round of denim would. Off-white leather sneakers, a brown canvas belt and a navy cap keep it relaxed. Buy the jacket with the sweatshirt on. Denim doesn't stretch across the back, and a jacket that fits over a tee will pull at the armholes once a hoodie goes under it. One neat cuff on the chinos is fine; two bulky rolls aren't.
7. Double Denim And Work Boots Autumn Outfit

Double denim only works when the washes are clearly different, and I mean obviously so from across a room. A medium-blue denim shirt or trucker with dark indigo straight jeans, a white thermal showing at the neck, and brown lace-up work boots gives it that practical Americana feel. A tan belt ties the boots in. If you want a vest, a rust or olive quilted one adds warmth without bulk. Skip loud branding so the contrast in the denim does the talking. New work boots are stiff around the ankle for the first couple of weeks, so wear them on short errands before a full road-trip day, and let the jeans fall over the shaft instead of bunching.
8. Knit Polo And Wool Trousers Autumn Outfit

What do you wear when a tee is too casual and a dress shirt is too much? A long-sleeve knit polo. In cream, navy, rust or deep green with charcoal wool trousers, the collar gives structure and the knit keeps it soft. Suede loafers suit mild days; leather Chelsea boots take over once the pavement is wet. Tuck it for the office, leave it out for lunch. I'd pick a moderate rise with soft pleats, because a low rise lets a knit polo ride up and untuck itself every time you sit down. Watch the hem length, too: a polo that ends mid-fly is the right length to wear out.
9. Cardigan And Relaxed Jeans Autumn Outfit

When the cardigan is the point, everything else should go quiet. A chunky oatmeal or patterned shawl-collar knit over a plain white tee or light chambray, relaxed blue jeans, and suede desert boots or dark penny loafers. A leather-strap watch and a canvas tote are plenty. Button only the middle one or two buttons if you want shape at the waist. Chunky knits pill fastest under the arms and where a bag strap rubs, so a fabric comb earns its place in the drawer. And keep skinny jeans out of this outfit; a bulky knit over a narrow leg makes the top look twice its size.
10. Trench Coat And Turtleneck Autumn Outfit

A beige trench over a black or charcoal fine-knit turtleneck is the rain outfit that still looks dressed. Navy tailored trousers give a quiet contrast, black Chelsea boots handle puddles, and a structured bag keeps papers dry. I want the trench to land around the knee with enough room across the back to reach for a rail on a train. Tie the belt behind when it's calm and buckle it in front when the wind picks up. Fine merino turtlenecks are thinner than they look, so on a properly cold morning I add a thermal underneath rather than sizing up the knit. It's the combination I trust most for commutes and meetings on a showery day.
11. Puffer Vest And Cargo Pants Autumn Outfit

Active weekends need layers you can strip in the car park. A navy or olive puffer vest over a heavyweight hoodie or quarter-zip fleece, straight cargo pants in stone or dark green, and trail sneakers with real grip. Add a beanie for the first hour. I cap the palette at three shades because pockets, quilting and technical fabric already give the eye plenty to chew on. The length check matters here: the vest should finish near the waistband and the hoodie shouldn't hang more than an inch or two below it, or the outfit looks like it's sliding off you. Skip baggy tactical cargos; a straight cut reads as a choice.
12. Rugby Shirt And Corduroy Trousers Autumn Outfit

A rugby shirt's heavy cotton and bold stripe can carry an entire outfit. Navy and cream, or burgundy and green, with tan or chocolate corduroy trousers and a white Oxford collar showing at the neck, gives the classic preppy stack. Brown suede chukkas and ribbed socks finish it, and an olive field jacket goes over the lot on colder days. Rugby shirts are cut generously and the twill collar stands up on its own, so I keep the trousers straight rather than slim to match that weight. Wash it inside out; the stripes fade along the fold lines if you don't.
13. Field Jacket And Gray Flannel Trousers Autumn Outfit

Putting a utility jacket over tailored trousers is one of my favourite tricks for business casual. An olive field jacket over a pale blue Oxford and navy merino, then mid-grey flannel trousers instead of jeans, with dark brown derbies or suede boots bridging the two moods. A brown belt and a messenger bag finish it. Flannel is warm and drapes softly, but it does bag at the knee after a long day of sitting, so hang the trousers overnight to let the nap recover. Wear the jacket open to show the shirt and sweater, and swap in a patterned scarf or heavier knit as the weeks get colder.
14. Monochrome Brown Autumn Outfit

An all-brown outfit only works if you vary the shade and the surface. A camel overcoat or dark brown wool jacket, a tobacco mock-neck, chocolate pleated trousers and deep brown loafers or Chelsea boots. I mix smooth wool, brushed knit, polished leather and a soft coat so the eye has edges to find. Without that contrast, brown on brown flattens into one block, especially indoors under warm light. If it feels heavy on you, put a cream scarf or off-white shirt at the collar. It's a calm, grown-up palette that suits a wide range of ages and skin tones.
15. Wool Overcoat And Hoodie Autumn Outfit

A wool overcoat over a plain grey hoodie is the mix I suggest to men who want warmth without looking like they're off to a board meeting. Charcoal, camel or navy coat; straight black jeans or dark relaxed trousers; white leather sneakers for the casual version, black Chelsea boots when the weather turns. The hoodie hood must sit flat at the back of the collar, so I size the coat with the hoodie on and look from behind. A coat that ends mid-thigh or at the knee gives enough length to contrast with the sportswear. Keep logos minimal, or the pairing looks accidental instead of chosen.
Suede, Cord and Flannel After a Wet Week
These outfits lean hard on fabrics that look better with age, but only if they're looked after. A few habits keep them going for years instead of one season.
Suede jackets and boots
Rain darkens suede and can leave a tide mark when it dries unevenly. Spray new pieces with a suede protector before the first wear, and if they do get soaked, stuff boots with paper and let everything dry at room temperature, away from a radiator. Once dry, a suede brush lifts the nap back up. Salt from treated pavements is the bigger enemy in late autumn, so brush it off the same day.
Corduroy and flannel trousers
Wash corduroy inside out on a gentle cycle and skip the tumble dryer, which crushes the wale and leaves shiny patches at the knee. Flannel prefers a brush and an airing between wears more than frequent washing. Hang both by the hem from a clip hanger so the creases fall out overnight.
Leather and wool outerwear
Hang a leather bomber on a wide, shaped hanger so the shoulders don't dimple, and condition it once or twice a season. Wool overcoats need a rest day between wears and a good brush to remove grit from the surface. Moths go for wool that's put away dirty, so clean coats before they go into storage for the summer.
Start With the Jacket You Already Wear Most
Look at your actual week before you copy any of these. If you're in an office three days, the knit polo and flannel trousers will earn more wear than the barn jacket. A chore jacket, straight jeans, wool trousers, sturdy boots and one good overcoat can rotate into most of the outfits above without new shopping. Get the fit right first: room for a midlayer, trousers hemmed to a slight break, and shoes and belts that connect the colours. Then change fabrics and outerwear as the temperature drops, and keep the palette steady.
