Family photo outfits cause more stress than the session itself, mostly because people try to match. When I style a family for an autumn shoot, I never put everyone in the same thing. I pick three or four related colors and spread them around the group through sweaters, dresses, trousers, shoes and small accessories, so the family reads as connected without looking like a team uniform. Before anyone buys anything, I ask where the photos are being taken, how cold it will be and how much the children will be running around. The fifteen palettes below run from soft creams to burgundy and forest green, with a full outfit for each family member and a note on which settings suit each one.

Building the Family Palette Outward From One Person
I always start with the hardest outfit to find, which is usually Mom's dress or a patterned piece someone loves. Everything else is chosen to support it.
- Pick the anchor outfit and pull two or three colors from it.
- Give the anchor color to one or two other people, never to everyone.
- Dress the rest in the supporting neutrals, mixing light and dark so each person has an outline.
- Allow at most two patterns in the group, of different scales: one large, one small.
- Put the darkest clothes on the people standing at the edges or back, and the lighter ones in the middle, which keeps the group from looking lopsided.
Then look at the location. A family in rust and camel standing in front of orange trees will blend in; the same family in navy and cream will stand out. Ask your photographer what the setting will look like on the day.
1. Cream And Camel Family Fall Picture Outfits

Cream and camel is the palette I suggest when a family can't agree, because it suits almost every skin tone and stands out against red and orange leaves. Mom wears a flowing cream midi with a camel cardigan, tan ankle boots and small gold earrings. Dad goes in a cream sweater, camel chinos and brown leather boots. A daughter can wear a textured ivory knit dress with ribbed tights and camel Mary Janes, and a son a cream henley under a tan sweater vest with brown pants and suede boots. Texture keeps the light colors from looking flat on camera, so I mix cable knit, cotton and corduroy. One caution: very pale cream can lose detail in bright midday sun, so this palette does best in woods, fields and orchards in softer light.
2. Rust And Denim Family Fall Picture Outfits

Rust and denim feels relaxed, which is exactly right for active photos at a farm or pumpkin patch. Mom wears a rust wrap dress, a cropped denim jacket and neutral ankle boots. Dad wears a chambray shirt with dark jeans, a brown belt and clean leather sneakers. A daughter looks sweet in a rust pinafore over an ivory long-sleeve top with tan boots, and a son in a denim shirt, rust chinos and brown lace-ups. The trap with denim is putting four people in blue jeans, which turns into one big blue block in a group shot. I spread it across a shirt, a jacket and one pair of jeans instead. A cream headband or a small patterned scarf ties the outfits together.
3. Olive And Ivory Family Fall Picture Outfits

Olive needs careful choosing for outdoor photos. Too bright and it fights the trees; too dark and the person disappears into them. A soft, slightly gray olive with ivory works. Mom can wear an olive maxi with an ivory knit cardigan, beige ankle boots and simple jewelry. Dad pairs an ivory quarter-zip with olive chinos and dark brown boots. A young daughter can wear an ivory blouse, olive cord skirt, cream tights and taupe shoes, while a son wears an olive overshirt over a cream henley with khakis and brown sneakers. Linen, corduroy, wool and suede add depth. I like this palette near tall grass, stone walls and lightly wooded trails.
4. Burgundy And Tan Family Fall Picture Outfits

Burgundy is a strong focal color, so I use it on two or three people at most and let tan lighten the rest. Mom wears a burgundy midi with a slim tan belt, nude block-heel boots and a small pendant. Dad layers a tan crewneck over a burgundy checked shirt, with dark trousers and brown loafers. A daughter wears a tan jumper dress over a burgundy top with cream tights and ankle boots, and a son a burgundy sweater, khakis and plain brown shoes. If the group still looks heavy, echo the color through a bow or shirt pattern rather than another full garment. It suits formal garden portraits, historic buildings and late-season sessions under bare or golden trees.
5. Navy And Mustard Family Fall Picture Outfits

Navy and mustard is cheerful, but mustard is a color I ration. On one or two people it lifts the photo; on everyone it looks like a sports team. Mom wears a navy long-sleeve dress with a mustard cardigan, cognac boots and small hoops. Dad wears an ochre sweater over a pale blue shirt with navy chinos and brown shoes. A daughter can wear a mustard cord dress with navy tights and tan boots, and a son a navy sweater with camel pants and a mustard bow tie or small check. Mustard can cast a slight yellow tint onto a fair face in close-ups, so I keep it away from the neck on whoever is palest. Red leaves, rustic fences and lakeside paths all work behind it.
6. Chocolate Brown And Beige Family Fall Picture Outfits

Tonal browns look warm in photos as long as you mix light, medium and deep shades so each person has an edge. Mom wears a beige sweater dress with a chocolate belt, tall brown boots and a textured bag that she sets aside for the formal frames. Dad wears a dark brown overshirt, a beige knit polo, khakis and suede boots. A daughter wears a cocoa dress with cream tights, beige ballet flats and a simple bow, and a son a beige henley with chocolate cords and tan lace-ups. All one mid-brown is the mistake I see most; the family melts into a single shape. Ribbed knits, brushed cotton, corduroy and suede give the shades something to catch light on.
7. Sage Green And Soft Blue Family Fall Picture Outfits

If orange and brown aren't your family's colors, sage and soft blue still feel right for fall, especially before the leaves turn. Mom wears a sage midi skirt with an ivory sweater, taupe boots and a pale blue scarf. Dad wears a soft blue button-down under a sage jacket, stone trousers and brown shoes. A daughter can wear a pale blue dress with a sage cardigan, cream tights and tan boots, and a son a sage sweater over a light blue shirt with beige chinos and brown sneakers. Keep every shade muted; one saturated blue pulls the eye straight to that person. This palette suits waterfront sessions, grassy fields and mountain settings.
8. Black And Camel Family Fall Picture Outfits

Black and camel gives a modern, slightly graphic family photo without anyone needing formal clothes. Mom wears a black knit midi with a camel coat, black ankle boots and simple gold jewelry. Dad wears a camel sweater, black jeans and dark brown Chelsea boots. A daughter can wear a camel pinafore over a black top with cream tights and black Mary Janes, and a son a black henley with tan chinos and brown boots. Black near small faces can look harsh and swallow detail in shadow, so I add ivory or beige close to the children's faces. Strip out logos and big prints so the contrast stays clean. It suits city streets, modern architecture and plain studio backdrops.
9. Plum And Cream Family Fall Picture Outfits

Plum is softer than burgundy and flatters a wider range of skin tones, which makes it a good accent for a large family. Mom wears a plum maxi with a cream wrap, taupe boots and pearl or gold earrings. Dad wears a cream sweater over a plum checked shirt with charcoal pants and brown shoes. A daughter can wear a cream knit dress with a plum cardigan, a matching bow and tan ankle boots, and a son a muted plum henley with beige pants and chocolate shoes. Charcoal anchors the group, but too much of it makes the frame heavy. Velvet bows and cable knits add texture. Late afternoon light in gardens, orchards and tree-lined paths suits it best.
10. Terracotta And Oatmeal Family Fall Picture Outfits

Terracotta gives you autumn color without the pumpkin orange that can look costume-like in photos. Mom wears a terracotta tiered midi with an oatmeal cardigan, tan boots and a woven belt. Dad wears an oatmeal crewneck over a white collar, rust-brown chinos and leather boots. A daughter can wear an oatmeal knit dress with terracotta tights and neutral Mary Janes, and a son a terracotta sweater, beige cords and camel sneakers. If the group needs more interest, add a small check to one person only. Visible texture is what makes these warm shades hang together. Everything here is easy to walk, sit and play in, which matters for loose, candid poses in leafy parks.
11. Gray And Dusty Rose Family Fall Picture Outfits

Gray and dusty rose is a quieter choice for families who want something other than the usual fall colors. Mom wears a dusty rose wrap dress with a light gray coat, taupe boots and silver jewelry. Dad wears a charcoal sweater over a pale rose or white shirt with gray trousers and brown shoes. A daughter can wear a dusty rose dress, gray cardigan, cream tights and neutral flats, and a son a soft gray henley with khakis and a rose bow tie or soft plaid overshirt. Mid-gray can look drab on an overcast day, so I keep plenty of lighter shades in the mix, especially on the youngest children. Stone buildings, dry grass and soft foliage all suit it.
12. Forest Green And Khaki Family Fall Picture Outfits

Forest green is a strong seasonal color, and khaki stops it from taking over. Mom wears a forest green sweater dress with a tan belt, cognac boots and simple earrings. Dad wears a cream button-down, a green quilted vest, khakis and brown lace-ups. A daughter can wear a khaki cord jumper over an ivory blouse with green tights and tan boots, and a son a forest green sweater, beige chinos and dark brown sneakers. In evergreen woods, deep green can blend into the background, so I make sure the people wearing it have cream or khaki next to them. One soft plaid in green, cream and tan pulls it together. Rustic farms and golden dry grass are ideal settings.
13. Neutral Plaid Family Fall Picture Outfits

Plaid is very fall, but in a group photo two patterns are the limit before it gets busy. Here Mom wears a camel and cream plaid midi with an ivory sweater, brown ankle boots and a slim belt. Dad stays solid in a camel quarter-zip, dark jeans and leather boots. A daughter wears an ivory knit dress with a plaid bow, cream tights and tan Mary Janes, and a son carries the main pattern in a beige, rust and brown plaid shirt with cords. Keeping everyone else solid lets faces lead. I also check that the two plaids don't sit side by side in the planned pose. Barns, wooden fences and orchards suit it.
14. Blue Denim And Warm White Family Fall Picture Outfits

Denim and warm white suit an early fall session on a mild day. Warm white matters here; stark optical white can blow out in sunshine and lose all its detail. Mom wears a warm white midi with a medium-wash denim jacket, camel boots and a brown belt. Dad wears a warm white henley, dark jeans, a tan overshirt and leather sneakers. A daughter wears a chambray dress with a cream cardigan, ivory socks and brown boots, and a son a denim button-down with oatmeal chinos and tan slip-ons. Vary the washes so nobody looks like part of a uniform, and add camel through belts, shoes or hair clips. Parks, coastal spots and backyards all work.
15. Monochrome Brown Family Fall Picture Outfits

A single-color family looks considered when each person wears a different shade of it. Mom wears a cinnamon sweater with a chocolate satin midi, dark brown boots and quiet gold jewelry. Dad wears a mocha knit polo, camel trousers and espresso shoes. A daughter wears a caramel cord dress over a cream blouse with tan tights and brown Mary Janes, and a son an oatmeal sweater, cocoa pants and camel lace-up boots. A little cream keeps faces from being boxed in by dark color. Mixing smooth satin, rib, brushed cotton and woven fabrics stops the browns going flat. Pale grass, stone walls and plain indoor backdrops all suit this one.
Small Stripes, Logos and Neon Show Up More Than You Expect
Some details look harmless in the mirror and cause trouble in a photo. These are the ones I remove first:
- Very fine stripes, tight houndstooth and small checks can shimmer or ripple on a digital sensor. Larger plaids are safer.
- Logos and text pull the eye straight off faces and date the photo.
- Neon and very saturated colors can reflect a tint onto the skin of whoever wears them.
- Shiny fabrics catch flash and sun as white hot spots.
- Wrinkles show more than you think. Steam the shirts and dresses the morning of the session.
Toddlers, Babies and Cold Fingers
The youngest family member decides how long the session lasts, so their comfort comes first. Dress little ones in soft fabrics with no scratchy labels, and let them wear the shoes for a few days beforehand. I keep a warm layer in a neutral color close by and take it off only for the photos. For babies, a knit romper or a dress over tights is easier than separates that ride up. Bring a spare top in case of snack accidents, and if it's cold, plan the group shots first while everyone is still happy.
Dress the Family Around One Anchor Outfit
Coordinated family photos still show who each person is, and nobody should be uncomfortable in them. Start with a small palette, choose one outfit as the anchor, then build the others with related colors and varied textures. Lay everything out together a few days before, shoes and coats included, so you catch clashing patterns while there's still time to swap. Children need to walk, sit and play, so skip stiff fabrics and brand new shoes. Every palette above can be adapted with clothes your family already owns, and that familiarity usually shows in relaxed faces.
