Fall clothes for men come down to a few repeatable formulas, not trends. Jeans, chinos, cords or relaxed trousers on the bottom; a breathable base layer, a textured middle layer and a light outer layer on top, so something can come off when you walk indoors. Flannel, denim, suede, wool and sturdy cotton give the season its feel, and olive, navy, brown, charcoal and burgundy all mix with each other. I've written each outfit below the way I'd explain it to someone at a fitting: what goes on first, what to check, and who should adjust it.

Planning Layers That Come Off Indoors
Fall is the season when a man can leave the house at 45 degrees and be standing in a warm office or a crowded train an hour later. The outfits below are built so you can strip back without looking half dressed. Here is how I think about each layer.
The layer against your skin
Tees, henleys, Oxfords and mock necks. This layer needs to breathe and look complete on its own, since it's what people see when the jacket is on a hook. Heavyweight cotton tees hold their shape here; thin ones cling and show sweat.
The middle layer
Sweaters, hoodies, overshirts and quarter-zips trap warmth. Keep it thinner than you think. Two medium layers are more flexible than one thick one, because you can take one off.
The outer layer
Jackets, coats and vests block wind and rain. This layer decides the size of everything underneath, so I fit it last, over the bulkiest middle layer you plan to wear.
The test I give people is simple: take off the outer layer and look in a mirror. If what's left still looks like an outfit, it works. If you're left with a stretched hoodie over a faded tee, the middle layer needs an upgrade before the jacket does.
1. Flannel Shirt Fall Outfit With Jeans And Boots

Flannel over a tee with straight jeans and boots is the dependable crisp-day outfit. I'd pick the flannel in rust, forest green or navy; anything with too much orange and red starts looking like a costume. Wear it open over a heavyweight white or gray tee when it's mild, buttoned when it turns. Medium-wash jeans keep it relaxed and dark indigo cleans it up, with brown service boots or suede chukkas. The one thing I watch is shoulder room. A flannel that fits snugly on its own won't go under a jacket later, so I'd size for the layer you'll add in November.
2. Crewneck Sweater Fall Outfit With Dark Jeans

On a cool morning that doesn't call for a coat, a textured crewneck with dark jeans and leather sneakers is enough. Oatmeal, charcoal, burgundy or deep olive all work. I put a white crew-neck tee underneath so a thin clean edge shows at the collar, which also keeps wool off the skin for anyone who finds it itchy. Dark straight jeans sharpen it. The sweater should skim the torso with room for the tee, not cling to it. White sneakers give contrast and brown suede warms the palette. If the day turns colder, a navy bomber or camel topcoat goes on top and nothing else needs to change.
3. Denim Jacket Fall Outfit With Hoodie And Chinos

A denim jacket over a hoodie is about as casual as layering gets. The hoodie has to be thin, a light loopback cotton in gray, cream or faded burgundy, because denim jackets are cut narrow in the sleeve and won't stretch around fleece. Choose a jacket with a slightly relaxed body. Olive or tan chinos avoid the double-denim question and bring in a fall color. Low white sneakers, retro runners or brown canvas high-tops finish it. Keep the hoodie plain. A graphic on the chest fights the jacket's seams and pockets, and the whole thing starts to look busy.
4. Overshirt Fall Outfit With Henley And Cargo Pants

When a jacket feels like too much, a substantial overshirt does the job. Olive, brown or navy cotton over a cream henley; the henley's placket gives the neckline some interest without a collar. Tapered cargos in charcoal, stone or muted green go underneath, with flat streamlined pockets, not big bellows ones that widen the thigh. Desert boots suit the earthy colors, neutral sneakers make it sportier. I roll the overshirt cuff once so a strip of henley sleeve shows. It's warm, it has pockets, and it moves well, which is most of what fall clothes need to do.
5. Bomber Jacket Fall Outfit With Sweater And Trousers

Can a bomber look polished? It can, if what's under it is fine and tailored. A clean bomber in navy, dark olive, taupe or chocolate goes over a thin merino or cotton sweater in cream or light gray, with charcoal pleated trousers or relaxed wool-blend pants. The sporty jacket against proper trousers is what makes it interesting. Keep the trouser break minimal and the sneakers understated. The mistake to avoid is volume on volume: if the trousers are roomy, the bomber should be trim and stop close to the waistband. An oversized bomber over wide trousers loses any shape you had.
6. Field Jacket Fall Outfit With Oxford Shirt And Chinos

The field jacket gives a plain shirt and chinos some structure, plus pockets you'll actually use. A light-blue or white Oxford goes on first, top button open, then straight chinos in tan, olive or navy with room through the thigh. An olive field jacket goes with all three of those colors, which is why I recommend it as a first jacket. Brown suede chukkas suit the season; sneakers relax it. On colder days I slip a thin gray crewneck between shirt and jacket. Most field jackets are cut with room for that, so check that yours is before you buy it a size snug.
7. Cardigan Fall Outfit With T-Shirt And Relaxed Jeans

Texture is what saves a tee and jeans from looking like nothing, and a midweight cardigan is the easiest way to get it. Oatmeal, taupe, navy or muted green over a crisp white or washed-black tee, with straight or relaxed medium-blue jeans. A slightly relaxed cardigan looks current, but the shoulder seam should still sit at the shoulder, not halfway down the arm. Cuff the jeans once to show the shoes, suede loafers for a smarter finish or retro sneakers for something younger. I'd wear ribbed socks in a neutral here; bright athletic socks pull all the attention to the ankle.
8. Leather Jacket Fall Outfit With Black T-Shirt And Gray Jeans

Leather is easiest to wear when nothing else is trying hard. A heavyweight black, charcoal or off-white tee, washed-gray straight jeans for a softer contrast than black denim, and a streamlined brown or black leather jacket that sits near the waist. Leather lace-up boots or Chelsea boots finish it. I always have someone reach forward in a leather jacket before they buy it, because leather doesn't stretch across the back the way cotton does, and a tight fit there never loosens much. Skip the ripped jeans and decorated boots. A watch, a dark belt and a plain scarf are enough.
9. Quarter-Zip Fall Outfit With Corduroy Pants And Sneakers

Corduroy pants bring texture to the bottom half, which most fall outfits forget. Straight brown, tan or olive cords with a navy or gray quarter-zip, and either a white Oxford underneath for a preppy finish or a plain tee for something looser. Leave the zip slightly open so the base layer frames the neck. Retro suede sneakers in cream, navy or brown match the cord's softness. Hem the cords cleanly rather than letting them stack, since thick cord bunches at the ankle more than chinos do. It's comfortable enough for a campus day and neat enough for a casual office.
10. Chore Coat Fall Outfit With Striped T-Shirt And Fatigue Pants

Utility clothing looks approachable when you stop at one or two workwear pieces. A navy, brown or faded blue chore coat goes over a cream-and-navy striped tee, with olive fatigue pants in a straight cut and moderate rise. Fatigues give you pockets without the bulk of cargos. Off-white canvas sneakers or brown suede shoes keep it light. Muted colors let the stripe carry the outfit. This is a good mild-afternoon choice because the chore coat comes off and what's left, a striped tee and fatigues, still looks finished on its own.
11. Puffer Vest Fall Outfit With Hoodie And Jeans

A puffer vest keeps your core warm and your arms free, which suits an active weekend. Navy, olive, black or rust over a plain gray or cream hoodie, with dark straight jeans or clean black denim. The hoodie has to be light, or it bunches through the armholes and the vest rides up. Trail-style sneakers add grip; leather sneakers make it more city. A ribbed beanie and a simple backpack finish it. I'd avoid very shiny or heavily padded vests here, which look like ski gear next to a hoodie and jeans. A matte shell with thin fill looks far more like everyday clothing.
12. Rugby Shirt Fall Outfit With Khakis And Suede Sneakers

A heavyweight rugby shirt is warm enough to wear as your only layer on a mild fall day, and it brings color without any effort. Classic stripes in navy, green, burgundy, cream or mustard pair with straight khakis in stone or warm tan. Brown or navy suede sneakers suit the collegiate feel better than bright trainers. If the rugby is cut oversized, keep the pants relaxed but tidy, not very wide. A brown belt, crew socks and a cap finish it. When the temperature drops, a field jacket or denim jacket goes over the top and the stripe still shows at the collar.
13. Wool Coat Fall Outfit With Hoodie And Joggers

Wool coat over a hoodie and joggers is a high-low outfit, and it only works when the colors stay controlled. A clean hoodie in light gray, navy or cream, tapered knit joggers in the same or a neighboring neutral, and a single-breasted wool coat in camel, charcoal or navy that falls around the knee. Minimal white or gray sneakers keep it fresh. The joggers need to look like clothing, not gym kit: no big logos, no contrast drawstrings, no cargo pockets. A heavy jersey jogger hangs better under a long coat than a thin, shiny one. It's polished outside and comfortable once the coat comes off.
14. Shacket Fall Outfit With Mock Neck And Black Jeans

The shacket sits between a shirt and a jacket, and it's useful on days that start cold and end mild. A solid or subtle check in camel, charcoal, navy or forest green goes over a lightweight mock-neck in cream, black or gray. The higher neckline gives a cleaner line than a tee and a bit more warmth. Black straight jeans let the shacket's texture stand out. Brown suede Chelsea boots add contrast; black boots make it sleek. Watch the length. A shacket should have room to layer but stop around the hip, because one that hangs well below it shortens the legs.
15. Rain Jacket Fall Outfit With Sweatshirt And Tech Pants

Wet days need protection without looking like you're heading up a mountain. A crewneck sweatshirt in gray, navy or muted blue, a light waterproof rain jacket in olive, charcoal or deep rust, and tapered technical pants in a matte fabric. Tech pants dry far faster than denim after a shower, which is the real reason I suggest them. Water-resistant sneakers or simple trail shoes finish it. The jacket needs room for the sweatshirt without a lot of excess fabric flapping. Look for taped seams if you'll be out in steady rain; a water-resistant shell without them will leak at the shoulders eventually.
Buying Order for a First Fall Rotation
If your closet is mostly summer clothes and gym gear, buying all fifteen of these outfits isn't the plan. I'd add pieces in roughly this order, because each step opens up several outfits at once.
- Dark straight jeans and a pair of chinos in olive or tan. Between them they appear in most of the outfits above.
- Two or three heavyweight tees in white, gray and black. Cheap, and they're the base for everything.
- One knit layer: a crewneck sweater or a quarter-zip in a mid-tone like navy or charcoal.
- One outer layer with room underneath. An olive field jacket or a chore coat goes with the most colors.
- Shoes that handle a damp day: brown suede chukkas treated with protector, or leather boots.
- Only then add the character pieces: flannel, rugby shirt, cords, leather jacket, wool coat.
Prices on all of these vary hugely, so spend more on the jacket and the shoes, which take the most wear, and save on tees, which you'll replace anyway. Buy the jacket on a cool day, wearing the sweater you'll put under it, and the sizing problems sort themselves out.
Dark Jeans and One Jacket Get You Most of the Way
Every outfit above leans on pieces that show up in several others, which is what makes a fall rotation easy. You don't have to buy everything at once. Dark jeans, chinos, a few neutral tees, one sweater and one jacket that fits over it will cover a surprising number of these looks. Add flannel, cord, suede or wool as you go. Fit matters more than anything else on the list, especially where a jacket goes over a knit or a hoodie. Adjust each formula to your weather and your week, and you'll be dressed for most of the season.
