Fall is good to curvy bodies. Heavier fabrics drape instead of cling, layers give you control over where the eye goes, and nobody expects bare arms. The fifteen outfits below are complete looks, shoes and bags included, for errands, weekends, work and the odd evening out. I don't work from a list of rules about what plus-size women should avoid. I work from fit: does it sit right when you walk, sit and reach? Get that, and the color can be whatever you love. Burgundy, chocolate and olive are easy places to start, and denim, soft knits, suede and corduroy bring the texture.

Fit Points I Check Before the Color
Plus sizing varies wildly between labels, so I never trust the number on the tag. Instead, I run every fall piece through the same short set of checks in the fitting room. If something passes all of them, it will look good in almost any color. If it fails one, no amount of styling fixes it.
- Shoulders first. The shoulder seam should sit at the edge of your shoulder bone. Shoulders are hard to alter, while length and waist are easy, so buy for the shoulder and tailor the rest.
- Upper arm. Bend your elbow and reach forward. Sleeves that grip the bicep will feel tight all day and pull the whole jacket backward.
- Bust. Look at button-front shirts and blazers from the side. Gaping between buttons means the next size up, or a hidden snap sewn between them.
- Rise. Sit down in trousers and jeans. The back shouldn't gape and the front shouldn't dig into your stomach.
- Thigh. Take a few long steps. Fabric that rubs hard will wear through at the inner thigh, so a sturdier weave or a wider leg will last longer.
Once those five feel right, the styling notes in each outfit below are about preference, not correction. Belt or no belt, tuck or no tuck, it becomes your call.
1. Plus Size Autumn Sweater Dress Outfit

A sweater dress is the outfit I suggest for mornings when you can't face decisions. The thing to check is stretch in three places: bust, hips and upper arm. A midi that's comfortable through all three will still be comfortable at 4 p.m.; one that's snug in the arm will feel tight all day. Chocolate and forest green suit the season. Knee-high boots with a heel you can stand in and a long wool-blend coat finish it, with a structured crossbody and gold hoops. Tights go on when it drops. A medium belt defines the waist if you want it. Left loose, the knit drapes in a long line, which I often prefer on a fuller stomach because a belt can push the dress out above and below it.
2. Plus Size Autumn Wide Leg Jeans Outfit

Wide-leg jeans are the denim cut I steer most curvy clients toward, because the leg skims the thigh instead of gripping it. Rise matters more than the leg, though. Sit down in the fitting room; if the waistband digs or the back gapes, the rise is wrong for you, no matter how good they look standing. Pair them with a fitted ribbed turtleneck and a cropped suede jacket that ends at the waistband. Pointed ankle boots peeking out under the hem keep the shape sharp; platform sneakers make it casual. A leather shoulder bag and a patterned scarf finish it. Dark indigo dresses it up. When jeans wear through at the inner thigh, that's friction, not poor quality, so a sturdier, less stretchy denim lasts longer.
3. Plus Size Autumn Leggings And Quilted Vest Outfit

Leggings and a quilted vest are what I wear on travel days myself. Begin with thick, opaque black leggings and a wide, high waistband that doesn't roll down when you bend. Over them goes a long cotton button-down or tunic that covers the seat, then an olive or navy quilted vest that keeps the body warm without bulky sleeves. Cushioned sneakers or weather-resistant ankle boots go on the feet. Add a roomy tote and a baseball cap. Leave the shirt untucked for coverage, or try a small front tuck for a bit of waist. If the vest pulls across the bust when zipped, size up and wear it open; it looks fine either way.
4. Plus Size Autumn Midi Skirt And Cardigan Outfit

For a softer autumn look, a midi skirt and cardigan are hard to beat. A pleated or A-line skirt in burgundy or a small seasonal print moves when you walk without clinging. Tuck a light knit in, then add a waist-length cardigan, buttoned or open. Loafers work for the office; low block-heel boots for colder days. With a printed skirt, keep the knit plain and pick up one print color in your bag. Opaque tights come out on chilly days. One honest note on bias-cut skirts: they're cut to hug, so on a fuller tummy or hip they'll show more than a pleated skirt will. Anti-chafe shorts underneath make any skirt more comfortable on a long walking day.
5. Plus Size Autumn Trousers And Blazer Outfit

For work, I start with trousers, because they're the hardest piece to fit. Wide-leg or straight-leg styles in charcoal or camel work best, with a waistband that sits flat at the back. Add a fine-knit sweater with whatever neckline you're comfortable in; a V-neck lengthens the torso. A single-breasted blazer gives structure, but test it by reaching forward. If the back seam strains or the buttons pull, you need the next size or a stretch-woven fabric. Loafers, pointed flats or low ankle boots, plus a leather tote, keep it practical. Tonal dressing looks especially polished: camel trousers, an ivory sweater and a deeper brown blazer. A watch and simple earrings are enough.
6. Plus Size Autumn Denim Skirt And Tall Boots Outfit

A denim midi gives more coverage than a short skirt and still feels casual. Stretch is non-negotiable here, along with a slit (front, back or side) so you can take a full stride. Tuck in a ribbed top or a soft mock-neck in rust or cream. Wide-calf knee-high boots close the gap between hem and leg and keep you warm; standard boot shafts often won't zip over a fuller calf, so measure your calf before ordering online. A belted trench or utility jacket adds a layer, with a saddle crossbody and gold jewelry. Dark denim reads dressier, faded blue more vintage. It's an easy outfit for shopping, lunch or an outdoor event.
7. Plus Size Autumn Chocolate Brown Outfit

Head-to-toe brown is one of my favorite ways to dress plus-size clients, because one color from shoulder to shoe reads long and unbroken. Start with wide-leg knit pants or tailored trousers, then add a sweater a shade lighter or darker. Mix textures so it doesn't go flat: ribbed knit, smooth trousers, suede shoes, a woven bag. A camel coat brings soft contrast. Brown loafers, ankle boots or sneakers all work, depending on the day. A cream handbag and gold jewelry lift the darker shades near your face and hands. Don't worry about matching exactly. Espresso, cocoa and caramel together have more depth than one brown.
8. Plus Size Autumn Wrap Dress And Trench Coat Outfit

A wrap dress against a trench is one of my go-tos for curvy figures, since the wrap adjusts to your waist instead of fighting it. Look for a true wrap or a fixed-wrap midi in a dark botanical print or a jewel tone. True wraps can gape at the bust when you sit; a fixed wrap or a small snap at the crossover solves it. Jersey is casual and clings more; a woven crepe hangs with more structure. Put a camel or navy trench over it with pointed ankle boots. A medium shoulder bag keeps the proportions balanced. Add smooth tights and a light scarf as it cools. It moves easily from work to dinner.
9. Plus Size Autumn Cargo Pants And Funnel Neck Jacket Outfit

Utility pieces can look polished if the fit is right. With cargo pants, the pockets are the issue: bellows pockets that stick out add width exactly where many of us don't want it, so I look for flat patch pockets that lie smooth. A straight or wide leg in a fabric with some give works best. Add a fitted long-sleeve tee or fine sweater in cream or black, then a funnel-neck jacket that blocks wind at the throat. Retro sneakers keep it casual; lug-sole boots handle wet weather. A compact crossbody lets the jacket and trousers lead. Olive cargos, a black top and a stone jacket is the combination I'd wear. Small silver hoops and sunglasses finish it.
10. Plus Size Autumn Overalls And Striped Sweater Outfit

Overalls over a striped sweater are playful and very comfortable. The fit details to look for are adjustable straps, stretch through the waist and hip, and side buttons that open wide enough to get them on easily. A straight or wide leg moves best. The striped knit (cream and black, or navy and white) adds pattern without being hard to match. Roll the hems if they're long, and add white leather sneakers or sturdy Chelsea boots. A cropped utility jacket layers over the top. Finish with a small backpack and a knit beanie on crisp mornings. Check the bib length: if the straps can't lengthen enough, the bib pulls down and the crotch rides up, so try them on sitting.
11. Plus Size Autumn Satin Skirt And Chunky Sweater Outfit

Shine against chunk is the point of this pairing. A bias-cut or softly flared satin midi skims the body; a roomy crewneck in cream or moss green sits on top. Leave the sweater loose, give it a small front tuck, or choose a slightly cropped knit that meets the waistband. That last one is my favorite for showing the waist without tucking bulk into a satin skirt. Sleek ankle boots dress it up and clean sneakers dress it down. A structured handbag keeps the soft pieces from slumping. Underwear lines show through thin satin, so smooth, no-line pieces or a slip underneath matter. A long wool coat finishes it for office days or dinners.
12. Plus Size Autumn Dark Jeans And Plaid Shacket Outfit

Dark jeans and a plaid shacket might be the most practical fall outfit there is. Begin with straight-leg or bootcut jeans in deep indigo or black and a waistband that stays comfortable sitting down for an hour. Add a plain fitted tee, bodysuit or light sweater under a plaid shirt jacket in camel, rust or forest green. Chelsea boots or supportive sneakers and a leather crossbody finish it. Pick up one plaid color in a knitted scarf on colder days. The fit check: button the shacket and cross your arms. If it pulls across the chest or the sleeves ride up, size up; shackets are meant to be roomy enough to layer. It's my go-to for school runs and road trips.
13. Plus Size Autumn Knit Matching Set Outfit

A matching knit set feels like loungewear and looks like an outfit. I like a sweater with wide-leg pants or a midi skirt in charcoal or oatmeal. Two things to check: the knit should be dense enough to hold its shape, and the waistband should be wide, so it doesn't roll or cut in during a long day. Thin knit sets tend to pill on the inner thigh and under the arms quickly. Add a longline coat for a clean outer layer and leather sneakers, loafers or low boots. A contrasting bag in tan or black breaks up the single color. A pendant and small hoops add a little shine. The two pieces also separate, so wear the sweater with jeans and the pants with a plain tee.
14. Plus Size Autumn Maxi Dress And Leather Blazer Outfit

A printed maxi dress gets autumn structure from a leather or faux-leather blazer. Choose a long-sleeve dress with a flowing skirt and a neckline that works with the bra you actually wear. Dark florals or small prints in rust or plum carry into cooler weather. The blazer is the hard part: leather doesn't stretch, so you need real room across the back and upper arms, and faux leather can feel warm and stiff indoors. Ankle boots suit everyday; knee-high boots add warmth under the skirt. Carry a structured top-handle bag with simple metallic jewelry. On cold days, thin leggings go under the dress unseen. It's expressive enough for dinners, practical enough for work.
15. Plus Size Autumn Corduroy Pants And Knit Outfit

Corduroy adds texture to the simplest sweater and pants. I'd go for a straight or wide-leg pair in rust, olive or chocolate, in a fine wale, since wide wale adds visible bulk at the thigh. Pair it with a striped crewneck or a solid knit in a contrasting neutral. A front tuck, a shorter sweater or a visible belt defines where the two pieces meet, though it also works fully untucked. Leather loafers keep it polished; lace-up boots take it outdoors. A canvas-and-leather tote and a lightweight trench add the practical layer, with small hoops and a watch. Corduroy wears thin at the inner thigh over time, so turn it inside out to wash and keep it out of the hot dryer.
A Coat That Closes Over Your Thickest Sweater
The most common fall frustration I hear is a coat that fit in the store and won't button by November. That happens because most people try coats on over a T-shirt. When you shop, wear or bring the chunkiest sweater you own and try every coat over it.
What to look for
- Room to cross your arms without the back seam pulling tight.
- Sleeves long enough to cover your wrist when you reach for a steering wheel.
- Buttons that close without the fabric pulling into horizontal creases across the stomach.
- Side vents or a back vent on longer coats, so the hem doesn't strain across the hips when you sit or climb stairs.
Wool, quilted or trench
A wool or wool-blend coat drapes and hangs straight from the shoulder, which is flattering, but it's heavy and can feel bulky under the arms. A quilted coat or puffer is lighter and warmer for its weight; horizontal quilting can widen the look, so I prefer narrow channels or diamond quilting. A trench is the most adjustable of the three, since the belt and storm flaps let you change the shape, but it only handles mild days on its own.
If you only buy one this year, choose the length that suits your height and the shoes you wear most. A coat that ends at the knee is the easiest to wear with every outfit on this list, from jeans to a maxi dress.
Wear the Waistband You Forget About
Fall dressing gets easier once every piece has a job and plays well with the rest. These outfits cover work, weekends, travel, errands and the occasional gathering, but treat them as starting points, not formulas. Change the colors, shift a hem, swap the shoes or add a warmer coat for your climate. What I'd never compromise on is a waistband you forget you're wearing, fabric that moves with you, shoes you can walk in and a coat that closes over your layers. Wear the shapes that feel like you. A mix of denim, tailoring, knitwear and dresses gives you a fall wardrobe you'll repeat without getting bored.
