A winter date outfit has two jobs, and most advice forgets the second. It has to look good across the table, and it has to get you there in the cold without frozen ankles or a coat that crushes everything underneath. On a curvy body, I build these around one special piece: a sweater dress, faux leather pants, a satin skirt, then add tights, boots and a coat that actually fit. Velvet, ribbed knit, suede and faux fur all earn their place this time of year. Dinner, a movie or drinks somewhere loud, here are twenty complete outfits to start from.

Tall Boots That Actually Zip Over Curvy Calves
Knee high boots appear in half the outfits here, and they're the piece curvy women struggle with most. Standard boots are usually cut for a narrower calf, so the zip stops halfway or pinches all evening.
Measure before you order
- Measure the widest part of your calf while sitting, wearing the tights you'll wear with the boots.
- Compare it with the boot's listed shaft circumference. You want about half an inch to an inch of room so you can sit and bend.
- Look for wide calf or extended calf sizing, stretch panels at the back, or an adjustable buckle or lace-up section.
- Boot shafts sometimes taper toward the top; check the circumference right where the shaft ends, not just midway.
Leather boots give a little with wear; synthetic ones mostly don't. If a pair is close but tight, a cobbler can often stretch a leather shaft slightly. And if knee boots just won't work, a heeled ankle boot under opaque tights or a long hem does almost the same job in every outfit below.
1. Plus Size Sweater Dress With Knee High Boots

A sweater dress is warmth and shape in one piece, which is why I'd put it first. A ribbed midi or knee-length dress with a wrap detail or a soft tie belt shows the waist; a plain straight sweater dress without one can hang like a sack on a curvy figure. Ribbed knits stretch at the seat after an hour of sitting, so a dress with some wool or elastane in the blend bounces back better than pure acrylic. Knee high boots, opaque tights and a long wool coat. Chocolate, burgundy or forest green.
2. Plus Size Faux Leather Pants With Turtleneck

Faux leather pants look sharp and block wind better than most fabrics. Pick a high-rise straight or wide leg, never a super-skinny pair, which can pull and wrinkle across the thigh. A turtleneck on top in camel, cream or gray softens all that black. Faux leather doesn't breathe, so a warm restaurant can feel sticky; a thin cotton or modal layer underneath helps. A longline coat lengthens the shape. Block-heel ankle boots, a small shoulder bag, simple earrings.
3. Plus Size Satin Midi Skirt With Chunky Sweater

Satin against a chunky knit is my favorite texture contrast for a winter evening. The skirt should skim the hip, not cling, and the sweater either cropped or tucked only at the front; a full tuck of a chunky knit under satin makes a ridge at the waistband. Satin and tights create static, so a quick touch of lotion on the legs or an anti-static slip saves the evening. Fleece-lined tights for very cold nights. Heeled knee boots or loafers. Champagne, navy, plum or espresso.
4. Plus Size Black Jumpsuit With Long Coat

A black jumpsuit is a one-piece outfit you never have to think about. Look for a defined waist, wide legs and a wrap neckline, and check the torso length before buying: sit down in it. If it pulls at the shoulders or crotch when seated, the body is too short for you, and you'll feel it all night. A long coat in camel, gray or deep red gives contrast. A pointed heeled boot under the wide leg lengthens everything. A metallic belt, a clutch and hoops.
5. Plus Size Wide Leg Jeans With Blazer

Dark wide-leg jeans can dress up surprisingly well. A high rise and a clean hem, then a fitted bodysuit or fine knit, and a blazer over the top. In winter I'd choose a wool-blend blazer that's warm enough on its own for a short walk from the car. Heeled ankle boots keep the hem from dragging through slush. A belt and a polished bag. It's relaxed enough for a casual bar and still looks like you planned it.
6. Plus Size Velvet Dress With Ankle Boots

Velvet feels right in winter, and on curves it's forgiving because the pile catches light softly instead of shining across every contour like satin does. A wrap, fit-and-flare or midi shape all work. Jewel tones like emerald, ruby, navy and plum look richest. Velvet crushes where you sit, so steam it once you get home rather than ironing it flat. If the neckline is low, a fitted long-sleeve top underneath keeps you warm. Opaque tights, ankle boots and sparkly earrings.
7. Plus Size Midi Dress With Faux Fur Coat

A faux fur coat turns a simple midi dress into an evening outfit. Choose a knit, jersey or printed midi with stretch. Ruching or a belt shows the waist; a straight midi pairs better with a cropped faux fur jacket that ends at the hip. Long faux fur adds bulk around the middle, so on a fuller figure I prefer a short pile or a coat that falls straight past the hip. Knee high or ankle boots depending on the dress length, plus tights. Cream, black, chocolate or soft gray fur, small bag, studs.
8. Plus Size Leather Skirt With Sweater

A leather or faux leather skirt adds structure that a knit skirt doesn't. Midi pencil, A-line or wrap, depending on how much shape you want around the hip. An A-line is the more forgiving choice; a leather pencil skirt shows every bump of a tucked sweater. A slightly tucked soft sweater balances the sleek finish. Opaque tights and heeled ankle boots, or knee boots that disappear under a midi hem. A long camel or black coat. A chain bag or bold earrings.
9. Plus Size Monochrome Knit Set With Boots

A matching knit set looks expensive and feels like pajamas, which is exactly the appeal. The set needs a bit of structure though; a thick rib or a dense knit holds its shape where a thin, drapey knit looks like loungewear and clings to the stomach. A sweater and skirt, or a knit top and wide-leg knit pants. Cream, taupe, chocolate, black or olive. A coat in the same color family keeps the line long. Knee boots with the skirt, ankle boots with pants. Minimal jewelry.
10. Plus Size Slip Dress With Turtleneck

Slip dresses can go into winter if you wear a fitted turtleneck underneath. A satin or velvet slip that skims to midi length over a black, cream or matching turtleneck. The turtleneck must be thin; a bulky one makes the slip's straps sit awkwardly and bunches at the armholes. Bias-cut slips cling to anything underneath, so wear smooth tights and underwear. Heeled boots and a long wool coat or faux fur jacket. Burgundy, espresso, navy or emerald.
11. Plus Size Trousers With Off Shoulder Sweater

An off-shoulder sweater gives you the bare-shoulder feeling of a party look while staying warm. High-waisted tailored trousers, wide, straight or pleated, balance the softness on top and make a long line. The sweater must stay put; a wide, stretchy neckline in a heavier knit holds better than a thin one that keeps sliding. A strapless bra with a firm band matters on a full bust. Pointed boots or block heels, a long coat, a clutch. Wine, black or icy blue.
12. Plus Size Plaid Coat With Black Dress

A plaid coat is the easiest way to make a plain black dress look like a whole outfit. Start with a black knit or ribbed midi with stretch, opaque tights and black ankle boots. Then the coat brings the pattern and the color. Larger checks look bolder and can add width, so on a fuller figure I'd pick a medium check in a coat with a slightly shaped waist or a long straight cut. Keep everything else plain: black bag, small hoops, maybe a burgundy lip. Very little effort for a lot of impact.
13. Plus Size Dark Jeans With Statement Coat

Jeans on a date are fine; the trick is the top and the coat. Dark straight-leg or slim bootcut jeans that fit well at the waist, then a satin blouse, ribbed knit or sweetheart-neck sweater. The statement coat is the star: a belted wool coat, a faux fur trim, a bright red or a long print. Restaurants often take your coat at the door, so what's underneath still needs to stand on its own. Heeled boots keep the denim looking dressy. A structured bag and simple jewelry.
14. Plus Size Sequin Top With Black Trousers

A sequin top gives you sparkle without committing to a full party dress. Black wide-leg trousers, straight pants or ponte trousers keep the bottom half simple and comfortable. A sequin cami under a blazer, or a long-sleeve sequin top on its own under a coat. Sequins scratch the inside of the arms, so a top with a soft lining is worth looking for. Coat linings and knit scarves snag on sequins, too. Black ankle boots or pointed flats, small earrings and a sleek bag.
15. Plus Size Burgundy Dress With Black Boots

Burgundy reads rich without being loud, and it suits almost every skin tone, which is why I reach for it in winter more than red. Knit, velvet, jersey or satin, in a wrap, midi or long-sleeve fit-and-flare shape. Black knee high or ankle boots ground it. A wrap dress is the easiest fit on a full bust because you can adjust the overlap. Black tights, a black wool coat or faux leather jacket, and gold jewelry against the deep red.
16. Plus Size Blazer Dress With Tights

A blazer dress has the structure of a suit and the ease of a dress. Fit is the hard part: it needs room through the bust, hips and arms all at once, and the button at the waist should close without pulling into an X shape. If it does, size up and have the waist taken in. Add a thin turtleneck underneath for coverage. Opaque tights on cold nights, sheer ones on milder evenings. Knee high or heeled ankle boots, hoops, a long coat over the top.
17. Plus Size Maxi Skirt With Fitted Knit Top

A maxi skirt keeps your legs warm in a way most date outfits don't. Satin, pleated or soft jersey skirts move well; pair them with a fitted sweater or ribbed long-sleeve top so the volume below has something neat above it. Satin maxis get soaked at the hem in slush, so I'd pick a length that ends just above the ankle in winter. Fleece tights hide under the long skirt. Ankle boots. A cropped jacket with an A-line skirt, a long coat with a straight one.
18. Plus Size Red Sweater With Black Jeans

Red and black is a strong, simple pairing and easy to copy. Black straight, slim or coated jeans with a red sweater. The neckline matters on a full bust: a V-neck, sweetheart neck, boat neck or soft turtleneck all suit different shapes, so try a couple. Pick a red that suits your undertone: blue-reds flatter cool skin, orange-reds warm skin. Black ankle or knee boots, a black coat and gold jewelry. Casual restaurants and movie nights.
19. Plus Size White Sweater With Camel Coat

A white sweater under a camel coat always looks clean. Start with white or ivory knitwear, then dark jeans, black trousers or a satin midi skirt. Ivory is usually kinder than stark white next to the face under warm restaurant lighting. The camel coat is the investment piece here; a wool-rich blend keeps its color and shape longer than a thin polyester coat. Brown, tan or black boots depending on the bottom. A neutral bag, gold jewelry and soft makeup.
20. Plus Size Denim Skirt With Tall Boots

A denim skirt can carry into winter with warm layers and tall boots. A midi with a front slit, an A-line or a straight cut, so you can walk comfortably. Rigid denim skirts ride up with tights, so a skirt with a little stretch or a lining sits better. A fitted turtleneck, ribbed sweater or tucked blouse on top. Tall boots cover the leg below the hem. A cropped jacket shows the waist, while a long coat dresses it up. A belt and a shoulder bag.
Freezing on the Sidewalk, Overheated at the Table
Winter dates usually involve a short, cold walk followed by two hours in a warm, crowded room. I dress for the room and let the coat and accessories handle the walk, so I'm not sitting there sweating in a thick knit.
- Choose a lighter layer underneath, like a fine knit or a satin blouse, and put the warmth into the coat.
- Opaque tights in a mid weight are warm enough for a short walk; save fleece-lined ones for long walks or outdoor plans.
- A wool scarf and gloves add far more warmth for their size than a thicker sweater, and they come off at the table.
- Check how the outfit looks with the coat off and sitting down. That's the view your date has all night.
Static is the other winter problem, especially with satin, tights and synthetic coats. Rub a little lotion on your legs, or run a metal hanger over the skirt before leaving. Natural fibers like wool and cotton build up less static than polyester.
Warm Enough to Walk, Dressed Enough to Stay
The winter outfits I'd pick for a date are the ones that let you forget about them once you sit down: warm enough outside, comfortable at the table, and fitted in a way you don't need to fix. There's a lot to choose from, from sweater dresses and tall boots to satin skirts, faux leather, velvet and knit sets. Get the fit right first, then the boots and tights, then the coat. A coat that suits you and boots that close around your calves will make even plain pieces feel like an occasion.
