Tube tops scare a lot of my plus-size clients, and I understand why: a strapless piece has nothing holding it up but its own grip. Get the support and the sizing right, though, and it pairs with denim, trousers, skirts, cargos and linen far more easily than most tops. The outfits below are built around that balance. A high-waisted bottom gives the top something to meet, an open shirt or light jacket handles coverage, and a supportive underlayer does the quiet work of turning a simple strapless top into something you'll wear all day without hitching it up.

Support Under a Strapless Top on a Fuller Bust
The fear with a tube top is that it'll slide down, and for a bigger bust the fear is reasonable. Support comes from the band, not from straps, so whatever you wear underneath has to be firm around the ribcage. These are the options I steer clients toward, from most to least support.
- A longline strapless bra. The extended band spreads the weight over a bigger area and stays put far better than a short band. Try it a band size firmer than your usual if it rides up.
- A tube top with a built-in shelf bra and silicone grip. Fine for medium support and lighter days, and there are no visible edges.
- A strapless bodysuit. Anchored at the crotch, so it can't slip; useful under a fitted tube top with high-waisted bottoms.
- Adhesive cups. I don't recommend them for a fuller bust on a hot day, because sweat loosens the adhesive.
Whatever you choose, do a test in front of the mirror: raise both arms, hug yourself and bend forward. If you have to pull anything up, the support needs changing before the outfit does.
1. Plus Size Tube Top With High Waisted Jeans

High-waisted jeans are where I start anyone new to tube tops. The waistband rises to meet the hem of the top, so there's little or no gap, and the denim's weight anchors the outfit. Pick a ribbed or double-layered tube top in black, white or brown; single-layer jersey shows every seam of what's underneath. Straight, wide or mom jeans all balance the bare shoulders. An open button-down handles arm coverage. White sneakers or platform sandals, gold hoops, done.
2. Plus Size Tube Top With Wide Leg Pants

With wide-leg pants, the tube top's job is to be the neat, fitted half of the outfit. A structured or double-lined top sits flat and keeps its edge straight across the chest, which a soft, thin one won't do over a fuller bust. Black wide-leg trousers with a cream top look sharp; linen-blend pants with a neutral one suit heat. A belt at the natural waist joins the two halves. Block-heel sandals or loafers, depending on where you're going.
3. Plus Size Tube Top With Maxi Skirt

A maxi skirt with a tube top is about as easy as summer dressing gets. The one fit point I watch is where the two meet: a high-waisted skirt that comes up to the bottom of the top avoids a strip of stomach and makes the whole thing read as one long line. Smocked or ruched tops add texture and grip better than smooth ones. Solid top, printed skirt; or tonal from top to bottom for a softer look. Flat sandals or espadrilles. Long skirts catch on escalators and car doors, so check the hem length in your shoes.
4. Plus Size Tube Top With Cargo Pants

Cargo pants have a lot of bulk at the thigh pockets, so the top has to be trim to stop the outfit sliding into shapeless. A plain ribbed tube top does that job. Choose relaxed rather than baggy cargos in olive or tan, and check that the pockets lie flat; overfilled side pockets widen the hip. This tube top with cargo pants combination takes a cropped denim jacket or bomber well when you need cover, and sneakers or chunky sandals keep it practical for travel and errands.
5. Plus Size Tube Top With Denim Shorts

Denim shorts and a tube top is the most classic summer pairing here, and also the most exposed, so I adjust the length to the person. Bermuda or mid-thigh shorts give more coverage and stop the thighs rubbing; high-waisted cuts support the stomach. A stretchy top in coral, cobalt or white keeps it bright. Throw an oversized linen shirt over it for sun on the shoulders, which burn quickly once they're uncovered. Flat sandals, a cap and a woven bag.
6. Plus Size Tube Top With Linen Pants

Linen pants are loose, light and wrinkly, so they need a fitted top to give the outfit some definition. That's what makes a tube top with linen pants work so well in heat. Drawstring or elastic waists are comfortable, but a thin drawstring can create a lumpy line under a short top, so I prefer a flat elastic band. Beige, olive or soft stripes on the bottom, a complementary solid on top. A kimono or long open shirt adds shade. Pale linen can be sheer, so check it in daylight before you go out.
7. Plus Size Tube Top With Blazer And Trousers

A blazer turns a tube top into something you could wear to a summer dinner or a creative office. What matters is that the top underneath is structured and secure, because you'll move your arms more in a jacket and a loose top will slip. A slightly oversized blazer covers the shoulders and back while leaving the neckline visible. High-waisted trousers in navy, camel or gray needn't match the jacket exactly. Pointed flats or loafers, and a sleek bag.
8. Plus Size Tube Top With Midi Skirt

Midi skirts with tube tops suit anyone who wants a dress feeling without a dress. A high waist is the key again, so the skirt and top meet and the line stays smooth. Volume needs balance: a full pleated midi wants the plainest top you own, while a sleek satin or denim skirt can take a ruched or printed tube top. Strappy flats or low block heels keep it light. Satin creases where you sit, so a cotton or denim midi suits a long day better.
9. Plus Size Tube Top With Matching Pants Set

A matching tube top and pants set is the shortcut I suggest to anyone who doesn't want to think about outfits in July. One color top to bottom stretches the figure, especially in black, chocolate or sage. Ribbed knit is comfortable but clings more, so I size up a knit set if I can see the waistband through the top. Linen-blend sets breathe better and don't show lines. Layer an open shirt in the same color family for cover. Platform sandals or slides.
10. Plus Size Tube Top With Kimono And Jeans

The kimono is the coverage layer plus-size clients ask me for most, and it does what it promises: arms and back covered, front open. The risk is that a long, flowing kimono plus wide jeans becomes a lot of floating fabric, so I keep the jeans high-waisted and the tube top fitted. Straight legs or flares both work. Lightweight chiffon or rayon kimonos drape best; stiff cotton ones stand away from the body. A long necklace pulls the eye down the middle.
11. Plus Size Tube Top With Palazzo Pants

Palazzo pants are the widest leg on this list, so the fitted tube top is doing the balancing. I choose a drapey fabric for the pants, jersey, rayon or a light crepe, because stiffer cloth makes the width look heavier. A black top with printed palazzos is the easy route; a single color head to toe looks more polished and longer. Bold pants need quiet accessories. Flat sandals or low wedges, with the hem just clearing the ground so you don't step on it on stairs.
12. Plus Size Tube Top With Denim Jacket And Skirt

A denim jacket over a tube top and skirt is the outfit I'd pack for a day that starts cool and ends hot. The jacket covers shoulders and arms in the morning and comes off in the afternoon. A high-waisted skirt in cotton, denim or ribbed knit works; choose your length by comfort, since a mini with a strapless top is a lot of skin for some people and a midi reads calmer. Stretch denim jackets move better across the back and upper arms. Sneakers or ankle boots.
13. Plus Size Tube Top With Leather Pants

Faux leather pants with a tube top is an evening outfit with very few pieces. I always point clients toward straight or relaxed legs, because very tight faux leather shows every seam and gets warm fast; it doesn't breathe. Add a knit-backed version if you can find it. A black or deep brown top keeps it clean. A cropped jacket or loose button-down gives a layer for air conditioning. Pointed flats or heeled sandals and a small clutch.
14. Plus Size Tube Top With Flowy Shorts

Flowy shorts are the softer option for anyone who finds denim shorts too stiff or too short. Look for high-waisted shorts with pleats, a paperbag waist or a loose linen leg; the extra fabric gives room through the hips and thighs and moves when you walk. Because the shorts are full, the tube top should be fitted. Try neutral shorts with a bright top or printed shorts with a solid one. Wear bike shorts underneath if your thighs rub on a long walking day.
15. Plus Size Tube Top With Button Down Shirt

Wearing a button-down open over a tube top is my favorite way to make strapless optional. The shirt covers shoulders and back when you want, and you can tie it at the waist for shape or slip it off in the sun. A crisp white shirt or chambray goes with nearly anything. Pair the top half with jeans, linen pants or a midi skirt. I'd size the shirt up so it hangs straight rather than gaping open at the bust, which looks tighter than it is.
16. Plus Size Tube Top With Flare Jeans

Flare jeans balance a strapless top because the extra width at the hem evens out the bare shoulders. High-waisted flares lengthen the leg, and dark denim looks dressier than light wash. A ribbed top, smocked top or structured bandeau all suit them. Flares need a heel or platform; in flat shoes the hem drags, gets wet and frays. A belt marks the waist if the top and jeans don't quite meet.
17. Plus Size Tube Top With Joggers

Joggers and a tube top make a sporty outfit, but the joggers need to look deliberate. Faded, baggy pairs with stretched cuffs read as loungewear; a high-waisted jogger in a heavier knit with a clean cuff looks styled. I pair them with a cotton or ribbed top in a matching neutral, and a zip hoodie or bomber for the plane or the evening. Sneakers are the natural shoe. A belt bag worn across the body keeps hands free.
18. Plus Size Tube Top With Slip Skirt

A satin slip skirt with a tube top looks dressier than its two simple pieces suggest. The skirt should skim rather than cling: a bias cut drapes over the hip, while a straight-cut satin skirt strains and shows any line underneath, so I add smooth shorts or a slip. A black tube top with a champagne or olive skirt is easy to get right. Flat sandals in the day and low heels at night. Satin marks with water, so keep drinks away from the lap.
19. Plus Size Tube Top With Utility Skirt

Utility skirts bring pockets, seams and a slightly rugged edge, which gives a plain tube top something to play off. I prefer a high-waisted midi version, since a short utility skirt with a strapless top can look unbalanced on a fuller figure. Keep the top in black, olive or tan so the skirt's details stand out. Chunky sandals or sneakers in summer, ankle boots in spring. It's a good change when jeans start to feel repetitive.
20. Plus Size Tube Top With Cardigan And Pants

A cardigan over a tube top is the gentlest way to wear strapless, and it's how I'd ease a nervous client into one. A cropped cardigan shows the waist; a longline one gives a relaxed vertical line. Underneath, the tube top still needs to be secure, because you'll take the cardigan on and off. Pair with wide-leg pants or straight jeans in cream, brown or dusty rose. Loafers or simple sandals. It also works in spring evenings, not just summer.
Sizing a Tube Top So It Stays Up
People often buy tube tops a size up for comfort, and that's usually why they slip. A strapless top should feel snug under the bust and across the back when you first put it on, because body heat and wear relax the fabric over the day. Look for a wide elastic or silicone strip inside the top edge and a fabric with good recovery, such as a ribbed cotton with elastane or a double-layer knit.
Length matters as much as width. A longer tube top tucks into a high waistband, and the tuck itself holds it in place. If the top is short, wear it with bottoms that rise to meet it. Rolling and creeping up at the hem is more common than sliding down at the top, and a smocked or ruched body grips better than smooth jersey.
Bare Shoulders in Strong Sun
Shoulders, the back of the neck and the top of the chest burn faster than people expect once they're uncovered. Put sunscreen on before you dress so it doesn't mark the fabric, and carry the open shirt or light layer from these outfits for the middle of the day.
One Strapless Top, Many Ways to Wear It
A single good tube top can carry most of these outfits. It goes casual with denim, sharp with trousers, softer with skirts and sporty with joggers. The parts that make it wearable are the ones nobody sees: a firm grip band, the right size, and support underneath that doesn't slide. Get those right first, then add the shoes, bag and layers that suit where you're headed. Once one fits, it earns its place in a summer wardrobe quickly.
