By your thirties, most closets are full of clothes that were bought for one occasion and never worked with anything else. When I edit a plus size wardrobe at this stage, I'm looking for formulas: pairs and trios that can be repeated across a work week, a weekend and a dinner without much thought. Think wide-leg jeans with a blazer, midi dresses with shoes you can walk in, soft matching sets and tailored trousers. None of it is about hiding. It's about clothes that fit and do a job. Here are twenty of the formulas I return to most.

Editing Your Closet Down to Pieces That Pair
Before buying anything from this list, I'd do the same closet edit I do with clients. It takes an afternoon and usually shows that you own more working outfits than you think.
- Pull out every bottom you've worn in the last few months: jeans, trousers, skirts. These are your base.
- Hold each top against each bottom. Anything that pairs with three or more bottoms is a keeper.
- Set aside pieces that only work with one other item. They're the reason getting dressed feels hard.
- Try on the keepers and sit down in them. Waistbands that dig or buttons that gape go to the tailor or out.
- Write down the gaps. Usually it's one good blazer, one pair of dark jeans or one plain midi dress.
The formulas below are built on those gaps. Most of them share pieces, so a single blazer or pair of black trousers turns up in several outfits. Buying for the gaps, rather than for a single look you saw, is how a small wardrobe starts covering a full week.
1. Plus Size Blazer And Wide Leg Jeans Outfit

If I could keep only one outfit in a client's rail, it might be this one. Dark or medium-wash wide-leg jeans that skim the hips and fall cleanly over the shoe, a tucked tee or soft knit, and a blazer with a little room in it. A slightly oversized blazer is easier to wear than a fitted one, as long as the shoulder seam sits at your shoulder and not down your arm. Pointed flats or loafers keep it sharp. It handles casual Fridays and lunch plans equally well, which is exactly why it earns its hanger.
2. Plus Size Midi Dress And Denim Jacket Outfit

A midi dress with a denim jacket is the outfit I suggest when someone wants to get dressed in under a minute. The dress does most of the work, so the cut matters: a defined waist, a wrap detail or a gentle A-line moves without clinging. The jacket should end at your waist or high hip. Longer denim jackets cut the dress in an awkward spot and shorten the leg. White sneakers keep it casual; block-heel sandals shift it toward lunch out. I'd skip this pairing with very heavy jersey dresses, which pull the jacket out of shape.
3. Plus Size Black Trousers And White Shirt Outfit

Black trousers and a white shirt is the oldest formula in my book, and still the one I'd teach first. The trousers need a high or mid rise, a wide or straight leg and enough stretch to sit through a meeting without the waistband biting. Classic cotton shirts can feel stiff and gape at the bust, so I often swap to a soft poplin or silky shirt that drapes. Wear it half-tucked, fully tucked or open over a tank. Loafers or slingbacks, a leather belt and a structured bag, and it's ready for work or dinner.
4. Plus Size Matching Set Outfit

Matching sets are my shortcut for clients who say they never know what goes with what. The color runs head to toe, so the outfit reads planned. At this age I look for sets that hold up as separates later: a knit top with wide-leg pants, a linen shirt with matching trousers, or a relaxed co-ord in a soft neutral. Many of us are a different size top and bottom, so buy from brands that sell the pieces separately. Clean sneakers or slides keep a loose set grounded.
5. Plus Size Sweater And Satin Skirt Outfit

Satin and knit is a texture contrast that does the dressing up for you. The sweater is soft and matte, the skirt catches light and moves when you walk. Choose a midi satin skirt in black, navy, chocolate or olive. Thin satin cut on the bias clings and shows every line beneath, so I prefer a heavier satin or one with a lining. A slightly cropped sweater or a front tuck keeps the waist visible without a thick ring of knit at the waistband. Ankle boots in winter, flats when it's mild.
6. Plus Size Jumpsuit And Block Heels Outfit

Jumpsuits look polished the second you zip them, but only when the torso length is right. I always ask clients to sit and to lift their arms before buying; a short torso pulls at the crotch and shoulders. Look for a defined waist, V-neck or wrap bodice. A wide-leg jumpsuit makes one long line from shoulder to shoe. Block heels add height and stay stable on uneven floors. Plan for the restroom too, because one-piece outfits under a jacket take longer to deal with than separates at an event.
7. Plus Size Cardigan And Straight Jeans Outfit

Straight jeans and a cardigan look simple, so the details decide whether they look put together or tired. I pick jeans in a clean wash with little or no distressing, and a smooth tank or bodysuit underneath so the cardigan lies flat. A long cardigan draws a vertical line; a cropped one shows the waist. Watch the knit at the elbows and under the arms. If it's pilling or bagging, shave it or retire it, since that's what makes the outfit look worn out. Loafers or ballet flats and a watch finish it.
8. Plus Size Linen Pants And Tank Top Outfit

Linen pants are the coolest thing you can wear in real heat, with one trade-off: they crease the minute you sit. I tell clients to treat the creases as part of the look rather than fight them all day. Choose wide or straight linen with a comfortable waistband and enough drape to move. Pale linen can be sheer in sunlight, so check in daylight and choose a skin-tone layer if needed. A shaped tank balances the volume, and an open linen shirt covers the arms. Flat sandals and a straw tote.
9. Plus Size Utility Jacket And Black Jeans Outfit

Black jeans with a utility jacket is my answer to the days when it's too cool for a tee and too warm for a coat. Black straight-leg jeans give a clean base, a white tee or striped top goes under, and an olive or khaki jacket adds pockets and structure. Push the sleeves up a little; it softens the jacket and shows a watch. Black denim fades, so wash it inside out in cold water to keep it from going gray. Sneakers for the weekend, ankle boots when you want it sharper.
10. Plus Size Wrap Dress And Ankle Boots Outfit

Wrap dresses adjust to your shape as you tie them, which is why they fit so many plus bodies better than set-waist dresses. A midi length is the easiest to wear day to day. The neckline is where I check first: a true wrap can open at the bust when you move, so a small snap or a camisole underneath saves you from adjusting all day. Ankle boots ground it in fall. Add a trench or cropped jacket when it's cooler, and a structured bag to keep it from looking too casual.
11. Plus Size Trench Coat And Wide Leg Pants Outfit

A trench makes the plainest clothes underneath look considered. Start with wide-leg pants in black, camel or cream and a tucked knit or fitted tee. Worn open, the trench's front edges draw long vertical lines. Length matters more than brand: knee to mid-calf covers the most outfits, and I always check that the coat's shoulders don't extend past your own. Cotton gabardine sheds light rain, which is why trenches work so well for commutes and spring weather. Loafers or low heels finish it.
12. Plus Size Tunic Top And Leggings Outfit

Leggings look grown-up when the rest of the outfit takes them seriously. Start with thick black leggings and do the bend test in daylight; thin pairs turn sheer at the knee and seat. Add a tunic, an oversized button-down or a relaxed knit that covers the hips. A long vest or open cardigan gives the outfit structure. Fashion sneakers, loafers or flat ankle boots look intentional where gym shoes look like a workout. I reach for this formula for travel days and appointments when comfort comes first.
13. Plus Size Pleated Skirt And Fitted Top Outfit

Pleated skirts move every time you walk, but the waistband is what I check before buying. Pleats that start right at the waist add bulk around the middle; skirts with a flat yoke and pleats below sit smoother. Choose a midi length and pair it with a fitted tee, bodysuit or fine knit. A belt sharpens the waist if needed. Sneakers make it casual, block heels make it dressier. It's a good choice for brunch, family gatherings and casual offices, and pleats hide creases better than plain skirts.
14. Plus Size Monochrome Black Outfit

All black flattens into a silhouette unless you vary the texture. I pair black wide-leg pants with a ribbed top, or black jeans with a soft blouse, then add a blazer or cardigan in another fabric. Matte crepe, ribbed knit, denim and satin all read differently in the same color. One thing I check in daylight: blacks from different brands rarely match exactly, and a brownish black next to a blue-black looks off. Silver or gold jewelry, or a red lip, adds contrast. It handles a workday or an evening.
15. Plus Size Graphic Tee And Midi Skirt Outfit

A graphic tee tucked into a midi skirt keeps an outfit relaxed without looking like you dressed in the dark. Pick a tee with a clean design and a decent weight of cotton; thin tees show every line underneath. Tuck it into a denim, satin or pleated midi to give the waist shape, or knot it off to the side. A denim jacket covers the arms if you want. Sneakers keep it casual. It suits concerts, museum days and weekend lunches, which is why I keep one or two good tees in every client's edit.
16. Plus Size Button Down And Denim Skirt Outfit

A denim skirt with a button-down is smart casual without the jeans every other day. Choose a midi or knee-length skirt in a straight or A-line cut. Rigid denim holds an A-line shape; stretch denim clings, so I'd size up if you go stretch. A white, striped or chambray button-down half-tucked at the front gives shape without a tight tuck all the way round. A belt adds definition if you want it. Loafers, clean sneakers or block-heel sandals, and a structured handbag.
17. Plus Size Blouse And Dark Wash Jeans Outfit

A pretty blouse and dark jeans is the formula I lean on for dinners and work lunches. Dark denim reads dressier than light wash, especially in straight, bootcut or wide-leg cuts. Choose a blouse with one interesting detail, soft sleeves, a tie neck or a wrap front, rather than three. Leave it loose only if the hem lands at the high hip; longer blouses worn loose cut the leg in half. Block heels, loafers or pointed flats sharpen the denim. Finish with a shoulder bag and delicate jewelry.
18. Plus Size Blazer Dress Outfit

Blazer dresses look strong, but they're cut like jackets, so the hip measurement is what decides the size. If it fits the shoulders but strains across the hips, it will ride up every time you sit. Look for enough length, a waist tie or a shaped seam. For more coverage, wear it over opaque tights, slim trousers or a slip dress. Low block heels or tall boots work depending on the season. Keep accessories minimal. It works for professional events and cocktail-style evenings where a suit feels too much.
19. Plus Size Knit Dress And Sneakers Outfit

Knit dresses with sneakers feel like wearing pajamas and look like you made an effort. Choose a ribbed or smooth knit that skims rather than clings; thin rib shows bra lines and seams. A midi length looks polished with almost nothing added. A side slit or waist seam keeps it from going boxy. White sneakers keep it fresh; platform sneakers add a little height. Layer with a denim jacket or trench. Knits stretch out at the seat with long sitting, so I'd wash and dry them flat to keep their shape.
20. Plus Size Tailored Vest And Trousers Outfit

Tailored vests are the piece clients are most nervous about, and the fit is the reason. The vest should button without pulling across the bust or stomach; if it gapes between buttons, go up a size and have the back taken in. Wear it with matching trousers for a suit look, or with black, cream or camel wide-leg pants. A fitted tee or light blouse underneath adds arm coverage. Loafers or slingbacks keep it polished for offices and conferences when a full blazer feels too warm.
The Layer Underneath Changes Every Outfit Above
I've watched a blouse, a knit dress and a jumpsuit go from awkward to right with nothing changed but the bra. Underpinnings are the least exciting part of a wardrobe and the one I'd fix first.
A bra that fits
Most fit trouble at the bust starts here. The band should sit level all the way round and do most of the supporting; if it rides up at the back, it's too loose. Bodies change through the thirties, after pregnancy and with weight shifts, so a fitting every year or two is worth it. A smooth T-shirt bra under knits and thin blouses removes the lines that make clothes look cheap.
Light smoothing, not compression
Heavy shapewear rolls down at the waist and gets uncomfortable by afternoon. For knit dresses and satin skirts, I prefer a light slip or smoothing shorts that stop thigh chafing and keep fabric from clinging. They also let a skirt hang and move instead of catching on tights.
Skin-tone layers for pale fabrics
White shirts, cream linen and pale knits show whatever is underneath. A camisole close to your own skin tone disappears under them in a way that white never does.
Two or Three Formulas to Start Repeating This Week
None of these outfits need a brand-new wardrobe. They need clothes that fit, and a handful of formulas you can repeat. A blazer changes how jeans look, a midi dress crosses seasons, and tailored trousers make plain tops look finished. Look for pieces that skim, support and move with you, and keep accessories simple. Start with the two or three formulas that match how your week actually runs, then build outward from there.
