Sizing Band Merch and Men's Flannels for a Curvy Body
Most of the tops on this list come from places that don't think about plus-size women at all: concert merch tables, the men's section, thrift racks. That's part of the charm, but it means the size label tells you very little. When I shop for a grunge client, I ignore the number and check three spots.
- Shoulder seam: it should sit at the edge of your shoulder or just past it. If it drops to mid-arm, the whole top will look borrowed rather than chosen.
- Bust and upper arm: unisex tees are cut straight, so they often fit the bust and then flare at the hip, or fit the hip and strain across the chest. Size for the bust and fix the hem with a knot or tuck.
- Length: men's flannels and tees run long, which is useful. A hem that covers the seat works with leggings and skinny jeans; a hem at the high hip works with baggy jeans and skirts.
Men's flannels are also cut with narrower hips, so if the shirt fits your shoulders but won't close over your hips, wear it open. That's how it looks best anyway.
1. Plus Size Band Tee Grunge Outfit

I start almost every new grunge client here, because a band tee is the one top nobody overthinks. The catch in extended sizes is that most merch is cut on a straight unisex block, so it can pull across the bust and hang like a sack at the hip. I size so the shoulder seam lands at the edge of your shoulder, then let the body run long. Straight-leg ripped jeans or black mom jeans give you that classic 90s feel, and a small front tuck tells people where your waist is. Combat boots, a chain belt and a flannel knotted at the hips finish it for a gig or a Saturday.
2. Plus Size Mesh Top Grunge Outfit

Mesh is where a lot of my plus-size clients hesitate, and I get it. Worn alone it can feel exposed, but as a base layer a plus size mesh top mostly shows up at the arms and neckline, which is exactly where it looks best. Put a cropped tee or a sleeveless band shirt over it. A black denim skirt with bike shorts underneath handles thigh rub, and chunky boots stop the sheer fabric from reading flimsy. If the open weave still feels like too much, a tighter grid pattern or a fitted cami underneath fixes it.
3. Plus Size Plaid Shirt Grunge Outfit

A plaid shirt is the oldest grunge piece there is, and it's forgiving on a curvy frame because it hangs straight from the shoulder. Wear it open over a black tank or ribbed tee so the two vertical edges break up the torso. I check one thing before anything else: the sleeves. Men's flannels in bigger sizes often run long in the arm, so I roll them twice to the forearm instead of letting them swallow your hands. Ripped black jeans, combat boots or loafers with crew socks, and a beanie keep it everyday.
4. Plus Size Black Crop Top Grunge Outfit

The crop length decides whether this works. I want the hem to meet the waistband of high-rise baggy jeans or cargo pants, or overlap it slightly, so there's no stripe of skin you keep tugging at. Boxy crops sit better on a fuller bust than tight ones, which ride up. Throw an oversized denim or faux leather jacket on top and the cropped line becomes a hint rather than the headline. Boots for edge, platform sneakers when you're on your feet all day.
5. Plus Size Graphic Tee Grunge Outfit

Faded prints carry this one. A new graphic tee with crisp ink looks like a gift shop; the same design washed and cracked looks like you've owned it since high school. That worn-in finish is what turns basics into a plus size grunge outfit. Black wide-leg jeans balance a long tee best. I'll knot it at the side or half-tuck the front, then let the jacket set the mood: faux leather sharpens it, flannel softens it.
6. Plus Size Striped Top Grunge Outfit

Stripes worry people who've been told horizontal lines add width. In practice a narrow stripe on a relaxed long-sleeve reads as texture, not as a measuring tape, especially under a vest-cut band tee that interrupts the pattern at the torso. Wide, high-contrast stripes are the ones I'd skip if you're self-conscious. Ripped jeans or black cargos underneath, Converse-style platforms, a beanie, and a cropped denim jacket or black bomber once it turns cool.
7. Plus Size Corset Top Grunge Outfit

Corset tops are the most structured thing on this list, so fit matters more here than anywhere else. A plus-size corset should close without the boning bowing outward at the side seams; if it does, go up a size, because bowing shows through every layer. Once it fits, a corset top grunge outfit is easy to balance: baggy jeans or wide cargos underneath, a mesh or striped long-sleeve beneath if you want arms covered, and a moto jacket on top. This is my pick for a show or a night out, not for sitting at a desk for eight hours.
8. Plus Size Oversized Tee Grunge Outfit

Oversized is not the same as shapeless, and that's the line I watch. The tee should drop just below the hip, with the shoulder seam sitting a little off the shoulder, not halfway down the arm. Wear it with ripped leggings, fishnet-style tights under shorts, or relaxed denim. A striped long-sleeve underneath adds that layered 90s look. If it still swamps you, roll the sleeves to mid-bicep or tie a small knot at one hip. Heavy boots and a studded belt give the volume something to answer to.
9. Plus Size Baby Tee Grunge Outfit

Baby tees used to stop at a size large, so finding one in extended sizing can take some digging; look for stretch cotton or a rib knit, which gives across the bust without the sleeves gripping your arms. The fitted top against high-waisted baggy jeans or a plaid skirt is the whole point here. Contrast between tight and loose is what makes it look intentional. Add an open flannel or a cropped zip hoodie, then Mary Jane shoes with socks if you like the softer, younger side of grunge.
10. Plus Size Tank Top Grunge Outfit

For heat, I reach for a tank. A ribbed black one holds its shape better than jersey, which tends to stretch out at the armholes after a few washes. Pair it with high-waisted ripped jeans or a denim maxi skirt, then decide what the flannel does: worn open, it covers your arms; knotted at the waist, it gives you a defined middle. Chunky sneakers suit warm days better than boots, honestly. Sunglasses, layered necklaces and a slouchy bag, and you're done.
11. Plus Size Long Sleeve Grunge Outfit

A thermal or long-sleeve tee is my workhorse layer from October on. Waffle-knit thermals trap warmth without bulk, which matters when you plan to put a band tee and a flannel over them. Thumbholes are a nice extra for cold hands at an outdoor show. Loose black jeans or a cargo skirt with tights keep the bottom half easy, and chunky boots are the classic choice. Finish with a beanie, a chain belt and a dark tote.
12. Plus Size Distressed Top Grunge Outfit

Distressing is fun until a slash lands somewhere you didn't plan. Before buying, I hold a distressed top up to the light and check where the holes fall against the bust and the stomach. If they hit awkwardly, a cami, bralette-style crop or mesh shirt underneath solves it. Keep everything else clean: black jeans or faux leather pants, combat boots, and a structured black bag so the outfit looks deliberate rather than tired. Silver rings and a thick belt are enough jewelry.
13. Plus Size Flannel Over Graphic Tee Grunge Outfit

This is the combination I'd call the backbone of grunge. A black or white graphic tee, tucked, with an oversized plaid flannel left open over it. The open shirt creates two long vertical lines down the body, which is the most flattering trick I know for a fuller torso. Red, green, brown or gray plaid all look right. Ripped straight-leg jeans, lace-up combat boots and a canvas crossbody. When the afternoon warms up, the flannel comes off and ties around your waist.
14. Plus Size Denim Jacket And Grunge Top Outfit

A denim jacket finishes an outfit in a way a cardigan can't, because the stiff fabric keeps its own shape over a soft top. Under it, a distressed black tank, a graphic tee or a mesh layer all work. I like the jeans in a different wash from the jacket; matching washes look like a uniform. On a plus-size body, check that the jacket buttons over the bust without gaping before you commit, even if you plan to wear it open. Cropped gives a sharper outline, oversized and worn-in a more relaxed one.
15. Plus Size Faux Leather Jacket Grunge Outfit

Faux leather has one weakness I always warn about: cheaper versions crack at the elbows and along the front edges after a season or two. Look for a softer, matte finish rather than plastic shine, and it'll age more like real leather. Over a band tee or fitted black crop, with distressed jeans or a black skirt and tights, it reads confident without trying. A classic moto cut stops at the hip; a longer cut gives more coverage over the seat. Combat boots or chunky loafers, layered silver necklaces, and you can wear it every week.
16. Plus Size Plaid Pants Grunge Top Outfit

Plaid pants are loud, so the top should be quiet: a black fitted tee or a plain mesh long-sleeve. Wide-leg plaid moves easily and drapes over the thigh, while tapered plaid looks sharper but shows every pull line if the fit is tight through the hips. I'd size up in a tapered pair rather than fight that. Chunky boots, a chain belt and a cropped denim jacket or black cardigan, and the outfit looks put together without being polished.
17. Plus Size Cargo Pants Grunge Top Outfit

Cargo pants are the comfort pick, but those big side pockets sit right at the hip, so what you carry in them adds width. I tell clients to keep them flat and use a belt bag instead. Black, olive, gray or brown all work with a high waist. Up top, a fitted crop or a ribbed tank balances the roomy legs better than another loose layer would. Chunky sneakers for errands, combat boots when you want more bite.
18. Plus Size Denim Skirt Grunge Top Outfit

When someone tells me they're tired of jeans, I hand them a denim skirt. In black, gray or dark blue it does everything jeans do with a different outline. Midi and maxi lengths are easier to sit in; a mini needs tights or bike shorts underneath for comfort and chafe. Top it with a band tee, a mesh top or a striped long sleeve, then an oversized flannel or denim jacket. Chunky boots ground the skirt so it doesn't tip into sweet, and silver hoops plus a chain belt keep the mood laid-back.
19. Plus Size Leggings And Grunge Top Outfit

Leggings only work in grunge if they're the opaque, thick kind; thin ones go sheer when you bend and look like gym clothes. Faux leather leggings are a good middle ground. The rule I give for proportion is simple: the top must cover the seat. An oversized band tee, a long distressed top or a flannel over a tank all do that. Combat boots or high-top sneakers, a beanie and a crossbody, and it's comfortable enough for a long travel day or a relaxed concert.
20. Plus Size All Black Grunge Top Outfit

An all black grunge top outfit lives or dies on texture. Head-to-toe black in one flat fabric photographs as a silhouette with no detail. So I mix on purpose: a mesh top or band tee, ripped black jeans or wide-leg pants, a faux leather piece, and metal in the belt and jewelry. Each surface catches light differently. One more thing I check: blacks fade at different rates, so pair a washed tee with washed denim rather than a brand-new inky pair. Platforms add height, dark sunglasses finish it.
Thrift Racks Are Your Best Source, With a Few Checks
Real grunge pieces look worn because they are. Secondhand flannels, band tees and denim jackets already have the soft hand and faded color that new versions try to fake, and the men's racks tend to hold the larger sizes. I'd still look closely before paying.
- Underarms and collar: yellowing or stiff patches there rarely wash out.
- Flannel weight: a thick brushed cotton flannel drapes and lasts; a thin, shiny one pills along the sides where your arms rub.
- Faux leather: bend the sleeve at the elbow. If you see tiny cracks or flaking, it will peel within weeks.
- Denim jackets: try them on with the layer you plan to wear underneath. A jacket that closes over a tee may not close over a hoodie.
Heavy Boots, Long Gigs and Thigh Chafe
The two things that end a grunge night early are sore feet and chafing, and both are avoidable. New combat boots are stiff at the ankle and heel, so wear them around the house with thick socks for a few evenings before a concert. If you're standing for hours, a cushioned insole helps more than you'd expect.
For skirts and shorts, bike shorts or anti-chafe shorts under the outfit are non-negotiable for me, and they disappear under a denim mini or a cargo skirt. Fishnets on their own won't stop rubbing; a pair of sheer tights under them will. Mesh tops get warm in a crowd too, so pick the layer you can take off and tie at your waist without wrecking the look.
The Grunge Formula I'd Hand a First-Timer
Grunge suits plus sizes well because it was never about one silhouette. It's built on layers, comfortable shapes and worn-in fabric, which leaves a lot of room to adjust. Pick tops that feel good on your body, pair them with sturdy bottoms and heavy shoes, and keep accessories simple. Band tees, mesh, flannels, corsets and stripes each give the same look a different mood. My advice is to copy one outfit from this list that you already half own, wear it for a week, and then start changing one piece at a time.
