A loose, floaty top is usually the first thing a curvy client reaches for on a day she doesn't want to think about clothes. It's comfortable, and it's easy to get wrong: wear it with something equally loose and the outline disappears. The fix is pairing movement with structure. A floaty blouse, tunic, peplum, kimono-style top or breezy button-down goes with wide-leg jeans, straight pants, a pencil skirt, linen trousers or tailored shorts, and in each case one of the two pieces gives the outfit its shape. Below are twenty combinations I use for work, travel, hot weather and ordinary weekends, written out from the top to the shoes.

Drape Versus Volume in a Loose Top
Two tops can be the same size and cut and look completely different on you. The difference is the fabric. A top that drapes falls close to your body under its own weight, then moves away when you move. A top with volume holds its shape away from the body all the time, so it adds width from shoulder to hem.
- Drapes well: rayon challis, crepe, viscose jersey, chiffon, washed silk-like polyester, soft cotton gauze.
- Holds volume: crisp cotton poplin, linen with no blend, organza, taffeta, stiff polyester.
A quick check is to hold the top up by the shoulders and shake it gently. If it swings and settles, it drapes. If it stays stiff and wide, it'll stand out from the body when you wear it. Volume is fine in a structured piece, like a crisp shirt worn open over a fitted tank, but for a top you want to float, choose the swingy one.
Chiffon and thin crepe are often see-through. I'd hold them up to the window: if you can see your hand clearly, plan for a cami or a slip underneath, in a tone close to your skin rather than white.
1. Plus Size Flowy Top With Wide Leg Jeans

Wide-leg jeans and a soft top are comfortable, but two wide shapes can swamp you, so the waist has to show somewhere. I tuck just the front of a blouse, flutter-sleeve top or tunic into high-rise jeans, or choose a slightly cropped top that ends near the waistband. The top should skim rather than cling; a fabric that sticks to the stomach defeats the whole point. Dark wash looks cleaner, light wash more relaxed. Platform sandals, white sneakers or block-heel mules, with a structured crossbody and hoops so the outfit doesn't read as oversized.
2. Plus Size Flowy Top With Straight Leg Pants

Straight-leg pants are the steady half of this outfit. They give a soft top something to fall against. A V-neck chiffon blouse, a crepe tunic or a woven swing top in a solid color all work. Black, navy, olive, beige and soft blue mix with office pieces. With a long top, a smooth flat waistband matters; a drawstring or heavy button fly shows through as a lump. Pointed flats, loafers or low block heels, a slim necklace and a structured tote.
3. Plus Size Flowy Top With Linen Pants

Linen pants on their own can look like pajamas next to a floaty top, so I choose a pair with some structure: a wide waistband, front pleats or a straight leg. Then a cotton gauze top, a loose button-front blouse or a soft peasant top. Gauze and linen together are about the coolest combination you can wear in real heat. Keep the palette close, ivory on beige or navy on blue, so it looks calm. Flat leather sandals, espadrilles or woven slides, a straw tote and small gold jewelry.
4. Plus Size Flowy Top With Black Skinny Jeans

Fitted black jeans under a long top make a clean contrast: all the movement is on top and the legs stay sleek. A printed tunic, handkerchief-hem blouse or high-low top that swings as you walk. Check the jeans for the dreaded thigh-to-calf taper on fuller legs; a skinny with good stretch and a mid-weight denim holds its shape better than thin jegging fabric, which wrinkles at the knee. Ankle boots in cooler weather, pointed flats in warmer. A long pendant necklace draws the eye down the center.
5. Plus Size Flowy Top With Denim Shorts

Shorts with a floaty top are a relaxed summer outfit, and the shorts' length decides how comfortable it is. Mid-thigh or Bermuda denim shorts give more coverage and are less likely to ride up between the thighs. The top can be loose or front-tucked, depending on how well it drapes. A stiff cotton top left out over shorts can make the whole outline boxy, so I tuck those and leave soft ones out. White sneakers or flat sandals, with a belt bag, canvas tote or woven crossbody and sunglasses.
6. Plus Size Flowy Top With Pencil Skirt

A pencil skirt is the most structured partner for a floaty top, which is why the combination works so well for work. A wrap blouse, soft satin top or draped V-neck gives movement without hiding the waist. Pick a stretch skirt in black, charcoal, denim or ponte knit; ponte has enough weight to smooth over the hip without the tightness of a woven stretch. Tuck the top lightly or knot it at the side. Slingback flats, block heels or sleek loafers, a slim bracelet and a structured shoulder bag.
7. Plus Size Flowy Top With Maxi Skirt

Two soft pieces need one small thing that defines the shape. Choose a top that's cropped, part-tucked, belted or gathered at the waist. The maxi skirt should have a flat waistband or a gentle A-line rather than a stack of bulky tiers, which pile volume onto the hip. Contrast helps: a solid top with a printed skirt, or the reverse, never print on print in this combination. Flat sandals, espadrille wedges or clean sneakers, a crossbody and simple earrings.
8. Plus Size Flowy Top With Palazzo Pants

Palazzos and a loose top can look roomy but styled, if the fabrics drape rather than puff. A top with soft drape falls close to the body; one with stiff volume adds width. The pants should fall straight from the hip, so look for a crepe or rayon over a stiff cotton. A tucked cami-style top, a loose wrap blouse or an airy short-sleeve blouse works. I keep the colors related, cream with tan, black with charcoal, teal with navy, so the eye travels top to bottom. Platform sandals or low wedges lengthen the line, with a clean clutch or structured handbag.
9. Plus Size Flowy Top With White Jeans

White jeans give a bright, crisp base to almost any floaty top. Straight-leg or bootcut jeans both suit, with a floral blouse, blue gauze tunic, striped loose shirt or pastel peplum. Sheerness is the common complaint, so choose a heavier white denim with stretch and wear nude-toned underwear close to your skin tone, not white, which shows through. Nude sandals, tan slides, metallic flats or white sneakers; a tan belt and matching bag pull it together for spring and casual Fridays.
10. Plus Size Flowy Top With Tailored Shorts

Tailored shorts look smarter than denim, and on a curvy figure they're also more comfortable if you choose the right ones. A longer inseam stops chafing; front pleats and a paper-bag waist give room through the hip. Pair them with a breezy blouse, linen button-down or cap-sleeve top. A partial tuck shows the waist without making anything tight. Flat sandals, loafers or white sneakers, a leather belt, a small tote and sunglasses. I pack this for travel and wear it on shopping days.
11. Plus Size Flowy Top With Flare Jeans

Flares echo the movement of a flowy top, so the outline swings from shoulder to hem, and a high rise keeps the middle defined. A V-neck blouse, a soft boho top or a printed peplum top all suit. Flares need a little heel: wedges, platform sandals or heeled boots. The hem should just clear the floor in those shoes, so take them with you when you get the jeans hemmed. Finish with a shoulder bag and medium hoops.
12. Plus Size Flowy Top With Cargo Pants

Cargo pants add pockets and structure, and a floaty top takes the hard edge off. I look for a relaxed but not baggy cut in cotton twill, satin or a light fabric. Heavy cargo pockets at the thigh add width, so I'd pick a pair with flat or angled pockets if your thighs are your fullest point. Olive, beige, black or gray, with a flowy white blouse, gauze top or loose V-neck. Sneakers keep it casual, platform slides make it more styled. A crossbody, sunglasses and studs are plenty.
13. Plus Size Flowy Top With Leather Pants

Leather against chiffon is a strong contrast, and a soft top makes leather pants much easier to wear. Faux leather straight-leg pants or leather-look leggings need stretch and a smooth waistband. A longer chiffon blouse, silky tunic or draped wrap top covers the seat and softens the sleek pants. Black on black is streamlined; cream, blush, burgundy or emerald tops add contrast. Faux leather doesn't breathe, so I'd pick a natural-fiber top if you'll be indoors all evening. Pointed flats, ankle boots or low block heels and simple jewelry.
14. Plus Size Flowy Top With Joggers

Joggers and a soft top can still look put together if the joggers aren't sweatpants. I go for smooth knit, ponte or a light woven fabric; heavy fleece bunches at the ankle and widens the hip. A loose button-down, tunic tee or draped blouse over tapered joggers, in simple colors: black with white, taupe with soft gray. Clean sneakers, a crossbody and small hoops. Throw on a denim jacket for structure. It's my travel outfit for long flights.
15. Plus Size Flowy Top With Slip Skirt

A slip skirt and a floaty top are two fluid pieces, so the shape has to come from the waist. Satin or a washable silky fabric that skims rather than clings; a bias-cut skirt in a thin fabric will show every line, so I'd go for a slightly heavier satin or wear smoothing shorts underneath. Tuck, tie or belt the blouse. A V-neck, square neck or wrap detail keeps the top half open. Flat sandals, ballet flats or low heels, a small shoulder bag and fine jewelry.
16. Plus Size Flowy Top With Cropped Jeans

Cropped jeans show your shoes, so the top shouldn't cover too much of the leg. Pick one that ends at the high hip or use a front tuck. Cropped straight, kick flare or wide cropped jeans all work. On a shorter frame, a wide cropped jean can chop the leg in half, so a kick flare or a straight crop is safer. Prints sit well against medium-wash denim; solid tops look minimal. Loafers, ankle-strap flats, platform sandals or sleek sneakers, with a belt for definition, through spring and early fall.
17. Plus Size Flowy Top With Paper Bag Pants

Paper bag pants already gather at the waist, so the top has to be thin enough to tuck without doubling the bulk there. A soft blouse, flutter-sleeve top or silky sleeveless top sits neatly inside the waistband. If your tummy is fuller, I'd choose a flat-front paper bag style with a tie rather than one with a deep elasticated ruffle. Keep the top simple when the pants have pleats or a belt. Neutral pants with a colorful top, or tonal for a sharper look. Block heels, pointed flats or clean sandals, and a small structured bag.
18. Plus Size Flowy Top With A Line Skirt

An A-line skirt sets the waist and skims the hip, so a floaty top has a natural place to land. A relaxed blouse, bell sleeves or a gentle peplum. Tuck it fully if the skirt has a clear waistband, or choose a cropped top that just meets it. Bell sleeves trail into everything, so I'd skip them on days you'll be cooking or at a desk all day. Midi skirts look smarter, knee-length more casual. Ballet flats, loafers or low wedges, with a top-handle bag.
19. Plus Size Flowy Top With Overalls

Overalls are mostly about fit through the hip, so check that before anything else. Denim, linen or cotton overalls with adjustable straps, roomy enough that the bib lies flat when you sit. A floaty blouse, loose cotton top or puff-sleeve top under the bib keeps it soft. A print can peek through at the sides; white or cream keeps it classic. Sneakers for casual, clogs or flat sandals for something more relaxed. A canvas tote, earrings and sunglasses for weekend errands and travel.
20. Plus Size Flowy Top With Blazer And Jeans

A blazer frames a flowy top and gives the outfit a clear shoulder line, which is the part a loose top lacks. Start with a soft blouse, high-low tunic or loose shell, then a relaxed blazer ending at the hip or mid-thigh. If the top is longer than the blazer, let it show by an inch or two; any more and it looks like it's escaping. Straight or slim jeans, dark for polish, light for casual. Loafers, ankle boots or block heels, a structured tote and clean jewelry for meetings and coffee plans.
Telling Loose From Simply Too Big
Many women buy floaty tops a size up "to be safe" and end up in something that hangs like a tent. A well-cut loose top is meant to fit at the shoulders and bust and only relax below that. A top that's actually too big gives itself away in a few places:
- The shoulder seam slides down your arm, unless the top is designed with a dropped shoulder.
- The armhole hangs so low that a side view shows your bra.
- The neckline gapes forward when you lean over the table.
- The hem is as wide as your hips plus another hand's width on each side.
Fixes are easier than people think. A tailor can take in the side seams or add a couple of back darts to bring a tunic closer, and shortening a hem that's falling at the widest part of your hip changes the whole outline. What can't be fixed easily is a top that's too tight across the bust, so when you're between sizes, fit the bust and alter the rest.
Give Every Floaty Top One Firm Partner
If there's one rule running through all twenty, it's this: a loose top needs one firm piece next to it. Structured jeans, smooth trousers, tailored shorts, a pencil skirt or a blazer all do that job. Then the small things: a front tuck, a flat waistband, a shoe that suits the hem, and a bag with some shape. You don't need oversized clothes to be comfortable or tight clothes to look styled. Find two or three floaty tops in fabrics that drape well, and match them with what's already in your closet.
