Plaid is a print I like working with because it already contains a small palette. Every check is built from two to five colors, and once you can see them, matching the rest of the outfit gets much easier. A plaid button-down, a cropped plaid blouse, a plaid shacket or a soft flannel can all go casual, preppy or a little edgy depending on what surrounds them. My approach is simple: the plaid is the loudest thing in the outfit, and every other piece is either a solid pulled from the check or a calm neutral. Here are twenty ways I'd put that into practice.

Matching the Check to Your Own Coloring
Before I look at what goes under a plaid top, I look at the plaid against the person's face. Two things decide whether a check flatters you: its contrast and its scale.
Contrast first. If your hair, skin and eyes are strongly different from each other, say dark hair and fair skin, a high-contrast plaid like black and white or red and navy looks natural on you. If your coloring is softer and closer in value, a strong check can look like it's wearing you, and a muted plaid in tones that sit close together is kinder. Then the undertone. Warm checks built on rust, mustard, camel and olive tend to suit warmer skin, while cool ones with gray, navy, burgundy and icy blue suit cooler skin. You can wear the 'wrong' one; just keep it further from your face, as a shacket worn open or a plaid skirt instead of a shirt.
Scale is the second check. A big buffalo check on a petite frame can look like a costume, and a tiny gingham on a tall, broad frame can read as a solid from across a room. Medium checks are the safest for most people.
1. Plaid Top With Straight Leg Jeans

This is where I'd start anyone new to plaid. A soft button-down in red, green, navy, brown or cream, front tucked into high-rise straight jeans, defines the waist without fuss. Blue denim sits comfortably beside almost any plaid because indigo is close to the navy that runs through so many checks. A leather belt gives the eye a solid break between print and denim; I match its brown to any brown line in the shirt if there is one. White sneakers, ankle boots or loafers, small hoops and a watch. Errands, a casual workday, the weekend.
2. Plaid Top With Black Leggings

Need something cozy that still looks presentable? A slightly oversized plaid shirt over black leggings works if the shirt covers the hips, which keeps the line long. Wear it buttoned, half-buttoned over a tank, or open like a light jacket. Black is forgiving here only if the plaid actually contains black or a deep navy; with a pastel check, charcoal leggings look less harsh. Chunky white sneakers, black ankle boots or platform slip-ons, plus a quilted crossbody or roomy tote. On colder days, a fitted long-sleeve tee underneath. It's my low-effort pick for travel and school pickup.
3. Plaid Top With Wide Leg Trousers

Plaid looks more refined than people expect over wide-leg trousers, as long as the shirt is thin and tucked all the way in. A heavy flannel bunches at the waistband and pulls the look back to weekend. With a colorful plaid, I keep the trousers neutral: black, camel, gray, navy or cream. With a muted plaid, you can go richer and echo one of its colors, olive, chocolate or burgundy, which makes the outfit look planned rather than matched. Loafers, slingbacks or pointed ankle boots and a structured handbag. It's a good formula for casual offices and lunch meetings.
4. Plaid Top With Denim Skirt

Plaid and a denim skirt have been paired for decades, and they still look right across spring, summer and early fall. Fitted or cropped plaid tops sit best with an A-line denim mini; a relaxed button-down tucks into a knee-length or midi. A light-wash skirt keeps a bright plaid cheerful, while dark denim calms a busy one. Sneakers for every day, western-inspired boots for a weekend, flat sandals in heat. If you want more shape, tie the shirt at the waist instead of tucking. A crossbody, simple gold jewelry and sunglasses.
5. Plaid Top With Leather Skirt

Leather next to plaid is a texture contrast: the shine of the skirt makes a matte cotton check look softer. A black faux leather mini, pencil or midi with a tucked button-down is the classic version, and it works best when the plaid already has black in it, so the skirt reads as part of the palette. Proportion is the other check. A fitted skirt wants a looser shirt; an A-line skirt wants a slimmer top. For something less formal, leave the shirt open over a fitted tank. Knee-high boots, ankle boots, or loafers with socks, and a black shoulder bag.
6. Plaid Top With White Jeans

White denim lifts plaid, but the plaid has to suit the season to keep it from looking odd. In spring, a pastel or blue plaid with white straight jeans and neutral sandals. In fall, I'd swap stark white for cream denim, because brown, olive and burgundy checks look muddy next to bright white and warmer beside ivory. Tan ankle boots carry that fall version. Add a woven belt and a structured tote or simple crossbody, and skip bulky layers if you want it crisp. It's the way to make plaid feel less rugged for lunch or a casual Friday.
7. Plaid Top With Cargo Pants

Cargo pants and plaid are both casual, so the job is keeping them from looking like a camping trip. Olive, black, beige or charcoal cargos with a fitted plaid crop top, or an open plaid shirt over a ribbed tank, get the street-style balance. My favorite color trick lives here: pull one shade from the plaid into your shoes or bag, so the eye links top and bottom. Sneakers, platform sandals or lug-sole boots, with a belt bag or nylon shoulder bag. Easy to move in.
8. Plaid Top With Pleated Skirt

Plaid with a pleated skirt leans preppy, and the way to update it is to keep the skirt solid. Black, navy, beige, gray or cream pleats beside a fitted plaid blouse or tucked button-down look current; plaid on plaid here starts to resemble a uniform. Loafers and crew socks push it toward school; ballet flats soften it. A cardigan tossed over the shoulders adds a layer without hiding the print. If the plaid is bold, choose a skirt with very clean lines. A small shoulder bag for brunch or a museum.
9. Plaid Top With Baggy Jeans

Baggy jeans and a loose plaid shirt can look like two oversized things worn at once, so something needs a shape. A cropped plaid top, a fitted plaid blouse, or a shirt worn open over a close tank all do it. High-rise baggy jeans define the waist; relaxed low-rise jeans lean into a more casual streetwear feel. Slim or platform sneakers or pointed ankle boots balance the leg volume, and if the jeans are very loose, roll the cuffs slightly so the shoes show. A small shoulder bag or belt. Laid-back weekends.
10. Plaid Top With Midi Skirt

A soft plaid button-down tucked into a midi skirt has more polish than jeans while staying casual. The skirt fabric sets the tone. Satin makes plaid feel feminine; denim keeps it relaxed; knit or cotton sits in between. I'd choose the skirt in the darkest color of the plaid, which anchors the outfit and keeps the print from floating. Ballet flats, ankle boots or low block heels, plus a slim belt to mark the waist. A cropped jacket for cooler weather. Daytime events and lunches.
11. Plaid Top With Blazer And Jeans

Under a blazer, plaid becomes office-ready. Start with a thin shirt or blouse, because flannel under a tailored sleeve twists and bunches at the elbow. A black, camel, navy or gray blazer, then straight or slim wide-leg jeans. I pick the blazer color from the plaid's background shade rather than its brightest line, which makes the jacket look like it belongs. Leave it open so the print shows. Loafers, ankle boots or clean sneakers depending on the day, and a structured bag. Coffee meetings and casual work settings.
12. Plaid Top With Denim Shorts

Plaid in summer needs a lighter cloth. Cotton, a linen blend or lightweight flannel breathes; heavy brushed flannel is miserable in heat. Wear it tied at the waist, tucked into high-rise shorts, or open over a simple tank. Light-wash shorts feel summery, while black ones sharpen it. Rolling the sleeves to the elbow shows a little of the shirt's inside, which on many plaids is a softer version of the same pattern. Flat sandals, white sneakers or espadrilles, and a straw tote or canvas bag. Farmers markets and boardwalk days.
13. Plaid Top With Tailored Shorts

Tailored shorts make a plaid top look more deliberate than denim ever does. High-waisted shorts in beige, black, white, olive or navy with a tucked plaid blouse or lightweight button-down keep the print from feeling too casual. For a soft summer look, a pastel plaid with cream shorts. For transition days, brown plaid with black tailored shorts and ankle boots. A slim belt and a structured mini bag finish it, with loafers, flat sandals or low mules. Good for travel days, city outings and casual offices.
14. Plaid Top With Overalls

Overalls cover most of your torso, so the plaid only shows at the sleeves, collar and sides. That's why I choose a fitted plaid shirt, a plaid turtleneck or a slim blouse; a bulky one gets squashed under the bib and wrinkles. Denim, black or corduroy overalls in a straight or relaxed leg work with sneakers or ankle boots. Corduroy in a rust or brown that matches the plaid looks especially warm. Add a canvas tote or crossbody, and a cropped jacket on cool days. Road trips, creative workspaces, outdoor fall weekends.
15. Plaid Top With Slip Skirt

A satin slip skirt softens plaid's structure, and the shine plays against the matte cotton. Black, champagne, chocolate, navy or olive satin all work; I'd let the satin echo the plaid's darkest tone. Tie the top at the waist, tuck it, or wear it open over a fitted tank. Satin shows lumps, so a thin shirt tucks more cleanly than flannel. Ballet flats, ankle boots or simple heeled sandals, or sneakers for a more relaxed version. A delicate necklace and small shoulder bag keep it light for a not-too-dressy day.
16. Plaid Top With Puffer Vest

Flannel or brushed cotton plaid under a puffer vest is a cold-morning outfit that keeps your arms free. A black, cream, olive, tan or navy vest goes with most checks. Choose one picked from the plaid if you can, which keeps the layers related. If the shirt is oversized, keep the vest slightly fitted, or the torso turns into a block. Straight jeans, leggings or utility pants, and hiking-inspired boots, Chelsea boots or sneakers. A beanie and crossbody finish it for fall walks and outdoor errands.
17. Plaid Top With Cardigan And Jeans

A plaid button-down under a chunky cardigan, with the collar, cuffs and hem just showing, is one of the warmest-looking outfits you can make. The cardigan color is where most people go wrong. Cream, gray, camel or chocolate soften the plaid without competing, while a bright cardigan fights the check. If the cardigan is oversized, keep the jeans more structured: straight, slim wide-leg or dark wash. Ankle boots, clogs, loafers or simple sneakers, a tote and small earrings. Bookstore trips and crisp afternoons.
18. Plaid Top With Black Jeans

Black jeans make almost any plaid look sharper, red, navy, green, gray or brown. That's because black gives the most contrast against a check's lighter lines. A half-tucked shirt with high-rise black straight jeans is the core of it. Black ankle boots keep it sleek; white sneakers add contrast. A black belt and shoulder bag tie in with the jeans. For a looser shape, roll the sleeves and leave a few top buttons open over a fitted tank. Concerts, casual dinners, city errands.
19. Plaid Top With Maxi Skirt

A maxi skirt gives plaid room to move. Choose a lightweight blouse or button-down and a solid maxi in denim, cotton, satin or knit. Tucked or tied works best, because a loose plaid shirt over a long skirt hides the waist completely. If the skirt is flowy, keep the shirt more structured. Flat sandals in warm weather, ankle boots for fall, sneakers for every day, with a woven bag, leather crossbody or simple tote to match the season. A good choice when you want coverage and comfort together.
20. Plaid Top With Matching Plaid Pants

A matching plaid set looks bold, and I find it far easier to wear in a soft, low-contrast check, gray, beige, navy or brown, than in a loud tartan. The set reads as one block of color from a distance, which is actually slimming when the scale of the check is small. A plaid blouse with wide-leg pants feels polished; a plaid crop top with relaxed pants feels casual. Keep shoes simple, loafers, sneakers, ballet flats or ankle boots, and calm the print with solid accessories: a black bag, a neutral belt, a plain jacket. Skip extra patterns unless you want a very fashion-forward look.
Telling a Well-Made Plaid Shirt at a Glance
Plaid is unforgiving of cheap construction, because you can see when lines don't meet. In a fitting room, I check these places:
- The front placket. When the shirt is buttoned, the horizontal lines should continue straight across both sides.
- The pockets. On a good shirt the pocket pattern lines up with the body behind it, or is deliberately cut on the bias.
- The yoke and sleeves. A yoke cut on the diagonal is often a sign of care; sleeves whose lines meet the body's at the shoulder seam look tidier than ones that jump.
Flannel Shrinks, Shirting Doesn't Much
Brushed cotton flannel has a raised nap that makes it warm, and it is also the plaid most likely to shrink and pill. Wash it cold, inside out, and dry it on low or hang it; a hot dryer can take sleeves up noticeably and flattens the nap. Smooth woven shirting is much more stable, and a warm wash is usually fine. Dark plaids with red lines can bleed when new, so the first few washes go with dark colors only.
Let the Plaid Be the Loudest Thing You Wear
Plaid works because it's familiar and flexible: casual with jeans and sneakers, polished with trousers and loafers, softer with skirts, warmer with vests and cardigans. The thing I come back to every time is the palette inside the check. Pick your other pieces from its colors or keep them neutral, and the outfit holds together. If the shirt is oversized, keep the bottoms cleaner. If the print is bold, quiet the accessories. If it all looks too relaxed, a belt, structured shoes or a better bag will fix it.
