1. Start#

A maxi skirt with boots is one of my favorite cold-weather combinations, and it is also one that goes wrong more often than people expect. The problem is almost never the skirt or the boot on its own. It's the gap between them: a hem that stops at the wrong point on the shaft, a heavy sole under a skirt too light to balance it, a slim boot swallowed by a full skirt. In the 30 outfits below I've paired each skirt with the boot I'd actually choose, and I've noted why that boot works, so you can apply the same thinking to what's already in your closet.
1. Denim Maxi Skirt With Ankle Boots Outfit

Denim maxi, white tee, black pointed ankle boots: this is the easiest combination on the list. Tuck the tee all the way in and add a black leather belt so the waist doesn't disappear under all that denim. A pointed toe matters here, because it pokes out from under a heavy denim hem and keeps the foot from looking stubby. An oversized beige trench when it's cool. For the evening, I swap the tee for a black bodysuit and add gold hoops.
2. Black Pleated Maxi Skirt With Knee High Boots Outfit

Pleats swing as you walk, so they show off the boot more than a straight skirt does. A black pleated maxi with a tucked black turtleneck makes one long dark column, and black knee-high boots with a pointed toe continue it. A long camel coat breaks up the black and gives some warmth to the face. I'd check that the boot shaft is slim enough to sit smoothly under the pleats; a wide shaft pushes the pleats out at the calf. Fine gold jewelry, a structured bag. Office, gallery, a nice dinner.
3. Satin Maxi Skirt With Cowboy Boots Outfit

Satin and cowboy boots shouldn't work together, and that's exactly why they do. A champagne or ivory satin maxi with a black crewneck sweater tucked in, a wide brown belt, and mid-calf brown cowboy boots with simple stitching. The rough leather keeps the shine from looking like evening wear. Satin catches on boot pull tabs and decorative stitching, so I'd pull the skirt down over the shaft carefully. A black suede crossbody. Brunch, a daytime date.
4. Knit Maxi Skirt With Suede Ankle Boots Outfit

A ribbed knit maxi clings, which makes it cozy and also unforgiving. A cream one with a camel cashmere sweater tucked in, the hem hovering just above the floor, is the version I'd wear. Beige suede ankle boots with a block heel give some lift so the knit doesn't drag. Knit hems soak up water and grit from the street, so this is a dry-day outfit. A chunky scarf in a matching tone and a shoulder bag. It's warm and quietly put-together.
5. Floral Maxi Skirt With Combat Boots Outfit

Combat boots under a dark floral ruffle-hem maxi are a contrast I like a lot. Tuck in a fitted black long-sleeve tee and add a black leather moto jacket. The skirt should just touch the top of the boot laces; if it covers them completely, you lose the toughness that makes the outfit work. A black crossbody with silver hardware. It gives the look a downtown feel for concerts and weekend wandering.
6. White Maxi Skirt With Brown Knee High Boots Outfit

White and chocolate brown is a softer contrast than white and black, and I find it easier to wear. A bright white maxi, a light oatmeal crewneck tucked in, a thin brown belt, and brown suede knee-high boots, with the hem falling just over the top of the shaft so no bare leg shows. White skirts pick up dirt at the hem, especially with boots that kick it up, so I'd save this for dry days. A neutral tote and layered gold necklaces. Brunch and daytime events.
7. Leather Maxi Skirt With Platform Boots Outfit

A black leather A-line maxi is a strong piece, and platform boots match that strength. A fitted charcoal crewneck tucked in keeps the top simple. Black platform ankle boots with a thick lug sole. A heavy skirt needs a heavy shoe; a delicate boot under real leather looks lost. Leather skirts crease across the lap when you sit, and those creases ease out with body heat. A silver chain, a structured black bag. Evening events and art shows.
8. Printed Maxi Skirt With Ankle Boots Outfit

Bias-cut skirts drape close to the hip and flare at the hem, and a printed one in rust, mustard and navy needs very little help. A plain black fine-knit top tucked in, black suede pointed ankle boots with a modest block heel. Bias-cut hems move a lot, so a slim ankle boot stays visible as you walk. A black crossbody and small gold earrings. Workdays and weekend dinners. Let the print carry it.
9. Sweater And Maxi Skirt With Riding Boots Outfit

A chunky cream cable sweater over a navy maxi is all about proportion. Tuck just the front of the sweater so the waist shows and the rest drapes over the back. Brown leather riding boots are the right partner, since a flat, sturdy boot suits the casual knit. Riding boots have a fitted shaft, so the skirt falls cleanly over them. A woven leather tote and a plaid blanket scarf. Apple picking and market mornings.
10. Black Maxi Skirt With Heeled Ankle Boots Outfit

A black maxi with a front slit is the most useful skirt here. Half-tuck a silky ivory blouse, and wear black suede ankle boots with a slim heel. The slit is what makes a heeled ankle boot work, because it shows the boot and a bit of leg with each step; without it, a heel under a long black skirt is almost invisible. A small black bag and red lipstick. Office hours into drinks.
11. Denim Maxi Skirt With Cowboy Boots Outfit

Light-wash denim with a front slit and tan cowboy boots is easy Americana. Tuck in a crisp white button-down, roll the sleeves, add a brown belt with a simple buckle. A few turquoise or beaded bracelets give it a western touch. Mid-calf cowboy boots and a slit are a good match because the slit shows off the boot's stitching. Flea markets and outdoor concerts.
12. Pleated Maxi Skirt With Over The Knee Boots Outfit

A metallic or jewel-toned pleated maxi with over-the-knee boots is a party look. A fitted black bodysuit, black suede over-the-knee boots sitting just under the hem, a cropped black leather jacket and a chain-strap bag. Over-the-knee boots under a long skirt mostly add warmth, since you only see them when the pleats move. Make sure the boots stay up on their own; slouching suede bunches under a skirt. Birthday dinners and holiday parties.
13. Satin Maxi Skirt With Chunky Boots Outfit

Chocolate satin and chunky black lug-sole boots is a contrast of liquid and heavy. Tuck an oversized cream sweater loosely so it blouses at the waist. The weight of the sweater and boots balances the shine of the skirt. Satin marks with water, so I keep this for dry days. A black shoulder bag and minimal silver jewelry. Coffee dates and casual dinners in between seasons.
14. Knit Maxi Skirt With Knee High Boots Outfit

Heather gray knit with black knee-high boots is the comfortable, sharp version of a knit skirt. A black cashmere turtleneck tucked in, a long pendant, black leather boots with a block heel. A block heel is steadier than a stiletto on the commute and keeps the knit hem off the ground. A long gray wool coat over the top. Commuting, casual meetings, weekend lunches.
15. Floral Maxi Skirt With Ankle Boots Outfit

A pastel floral maxi with beige ankle boots is a spring outfit for days when sandals are too cold. A white cotton blouse with small puff sleeves, a few buttons undone. Light beige suede boots with a low heel blend into the leg so they don't fight the soft print; black boots would look too heavy here. A straw-effect crossbody. Garden parties and bridal showers on cool days.
16. White Maxi Skirt With Black Ankle Boots Outfit

White crepe with black accessories is a classic contrast. A high-waisted white crepe maxi, a black cashmere sweater tucked fully, a thin black belt and black pointed ankle boots. Crepe has enough weight to hang well and resists creasing better than cotton. A structured black handbag. Add a blazer for the office or keep it simple for dinner.
17. Leather Maxi Skirt With Knee High Boots Outfit

A brown faux-leather maxi with a front slit is rich and modern. A cream ribbed turtleneck tucked in, a wide cognac belt, brown knee-high boots with a square toe. A tonal brown look relies on matching undertones, so I'd hold the boots against the skirt; warm and cool browns side by side look like a mistake. A long beige coat in the cold. Dinners and professional settings in fall and winter.
18. Striped Maxi Skirt With Ankle Boots Outfit

Vertical stripes lengthen the lower body, and a black and cream striped maxi with ankle boots carries that line to the floor. A black fitted off-the-shoulder knit adds a little skin. Black stiletto ankle boots and a black clutch. For petite women this is one of the better maxi options, because the stripes and the heel together add height. Cocktail parties and date nights.
19. Maxi Skirt With Biker Boots Outfit

A plain dark gray or black maxi with flat biker boots is the most relaxed outfit here. Tuck in a band tee or a gray marled long-sleeve, throw on a black denim jacket. Biker boots have a wide shaft, so they suit a skirt with some fullness at the hem; a narrow skirt catches on the buckles. A slouchy hobo and dark sunglasses. Casual weekends and road trips.
20. Tulle Maxi Skirt With Ankle Boots Outfit

Black tulle has huge volume, and ankle boots bring it back to earth. A gray cashmere sweater tucked in at the front keeps the top half slim against the fullness. Black suede pointed ankle boots with a mid-height block heel. Tulle snags on rough boot edges and zips, so check the inside zip on the boots is covered. A small velvet crossbody. Holiday parties and evenings out.
21. Maxi Skirt With Lace Up Boots Outfit

A khaki or olive utility maxi with cargo pockets is practical, and brown lace-up boots with a rugged sole suit it. A white ribbed tank with an open chambray shirt on top. Lace-up boots give real ankle support, which matters if you're walking all day on cobbles or uneven paths. A canvas backpack or crossbody. Exploring a new city, outdoor plans.
22. Maxi Skirt With Chelsea Boots Outfit

A black maxi with a high side slit and Chelsea boots is very clean. A black turtleneck bodysuit keeps the line smooth at the waist with nothing bunching. On the feet, black leather Chelsea boots with a slight point and a low block heel. Chelsea boots slip on and off with no laces, so they're my choice for days with security checks or shoes-off homes. A long pendant and a black tote. Office and client meetings.
23. Maxi Skirt With Slouchy Boots Outfit

Burgundy satin with burgundy slouchy boots is tonal dressing at its boldest. A black high-neck top tucked in, a thin chain belt, burgundy suede slouch boots with a stiletto heel. The relaxed folds of the boot soften the polish of the satin. Matching burgundy shades exactly is hard, so a slightly darker boot than skirt looks more deliberate than a near miss. A black mini bag. Dinner dates and evening events.
24. Maxi Skirt With Sock Boots Outfit

A gray wool A-line maxi with sock boots gives a clean line from hem to floor. A cream cashmere sweater tucked in, a long gray vest or a tailored coat. Charcoal sock boots with a pointed toe and slim heel fit close at the ankle, so there's no gap or boot opening visible when the skirt moves. Sock boots stretch, so they suit slim and full ankles alike. Work presentations and networking.
25. Maxi Skirt With Heeled Knee High Boots Outfit

A navy pleated maxi with a gold sheen looks very polished with heeled knee-high boots. A black silk camisole tucked in and a fitted black blazer over it. Black stiletto knee-high boots, a black clutch, a gold cuff. Pleats with a sheen catch the light as they move, and a slim boot keeps the focus on the skirt. Formal dinners and evening events.
26. Maxi Skirt With Flat Knee High Boots Outfit

A slim camel suede maxi with flat knee-high boots is understated and rich. A beige cashmere turtleneck, a matching camel belt, flat brown leather boots with minimal hardware, a long camel coat. Suede skirts water-spot, so treat it with protector spray before wearing. A large leather tote. Flat boots make this a good outfit for travel days and long lunches when you'll be on your feet.
27. Maxi Skirt With Platform Combat Boots Outfit

Black satin with platform combat boots is the edgiest pairing on the list. A band tee or plain white tank, an oversized distressed denim jacket. Black platform combat boots with a chunky sole. The platform lifts the satin hem off the pavement, which saves it from wear. A silver chain and a black beanie. Concerts and late nights.
28. Maxi Skirt With Western Ankle Boots Outfit

A tiered ivory maxi with lace and embroidery is fully bohemian. A cream eyelet blouse tucked in, a wide brown belt with a tooled silver buckle, and brown western ankle boots with a pointed toe and low angled heel. A tan suede fringe bag, silver rings, turquoise earrings. Western ankle boots are shorter than cowboy boots, which suits a tiered skirt that needs the ankle to show. It fits right in with the western revival happening in fashion. Festivals and sunny days.
29. Maxi Skirt With Pointed Toe Boots Outfit

A charcoal maxi with a wrap front gives an asymmetric hem that shows the boots off. A black cashmere turtleneck bodysuit, a thin silver belt, black pointed ankle boots with a stiletto heel. The pointed toe extends the leg line where the shorter side of the hem lifts. A structured bag and silver drops. A modern workwear essential that goes straight to dinner.
30. Maxi Skirt With Lug Sole Boots Outfit
A forest green corduroy maxi is warm and practical. A cream thermal tucked in, a chunky oatmeal cardigan. Black lug-sole ankle boots with a thick rubber sole that grips wet sidewalks and muddy paths. A roomy canvas tote and a wool beanie. Corduroy is heavy enough to hold up to wind, so the skirt won't blow around. My pick for pumpkin-patch trips and casual hikes.
Where the Hem Should Hit the Boot
When a maxi and boot combination looks off, the cause is usually the point where the hem meets the shoe. These are the rules I use.
Ankle boots
The hem should cover the boot opening completely or stop well below the ankle, so you never see a strip of bare leg or sock between skirt and boot as you walk. A slit or a bias cut that moves is useful here, because it shows the boot without leaving a gap.
Knee-high and riding boots
The skirt needs to cover the top of the shaft. A hem that ends at the top of the boot cuts the leg in two and looks like the skirt shrank. A slim shaft works under straight and pleated skirts; a wide shaft only works under a skirt with enough fullness to fall over it.
Length off the ground
With boots, I aim for the hem to sit about an inch off the floor when you stand. Any longer and you step on it on stairs and drag it through puddles. If you wear the same skirt with flats and heeled boots, hem it for the lower shoe, or it will sweep the street every time you wear the flats.
Rain, Salt and a Long Skirt
A maxi skirt and boots is a cold-weather outfit, which means wet pavements. The hem and the boots take the punishment, so I plan for it.
- Suede and nubuck boots darken and stain in rain. Treat them with a protector spray before the first wear and again every few weeks; on a wet day, choose smooth leather or rubber lug soles instead.
- Road salt leaves white tide marks on leather. Wipe them with a damp cloth the same day, let the boots dry away from a radiator, then condition the leather.
- Satin, knit and pale skirts soak up water at the hem and show it. On rainy days, wear denim, corduroy, wool or leather, which hide splashes better.
- Platform and lug soles lift the hem by an inch or so, which keeps it out of shallow puddles. They're the most practical boots for a long skirt in winter.
When you get home, hang a damp skirt right away so the hem dries flat, and stuff wet boots with newspaper so they keep their shape.
Start With the Boots You Already Own
If you're building these outfits from your own closet, I'd start with the boots, not the skirt. A pair of black pointed ankle boots and a pair of brown knee-highs cover more than half of the looks here. Then match the skirt to the boot's weight: satin and knit with sleek boots or a deliberate heavy contrast, denim and corduroy with sturdy soles, tulle and pleats with something slim. Check the hem against the boot in a mirror before you leave, tuck the top so the waist shows, and the rest takes care of itself.
