Capri pants used to be the piece people apologized for, a polarizing Y2K relic that seemed stuck between a short and a trouser. They're back, and the reason they now look current is mostly about cut and shoes. A capri that ends cleanly at mid-calf, in a fabric with some body, looks deliberate. One that stops at the widest part of the calf in a limp knit looks like a trouser that shrank. I build wardrobes around pieces that work hard, and a good pair of capris covers a lot of summer: office days with a cropped blazer, weekends with a tee and sneakers, evenings in satin with a camisole. Linen, denim, athletic knits, gingham and satin all appear below, in 25 full outfits, with what I check on each before recommending it.

Where a Capri Hem Should Land on Your Calf
The hem position decides whether capris flatter you, more than the fabric or color. The spot to avoid is the widest part of the calf, because the hem draws a horizontal line exactly where the leg is fullest. A hem a little below that point, toward the narrowing above the ankle, makes the leg look longer and slimmer. Just below the knee also works, especially in a slim cut.
Petite frames
A slightly shorter capri ending near the narrowest part of the lower leg shows more ankle, which reads as longer. Pair it with a shoe in a skin-close shade or a low vamp, and avoid chunky ankle straps.
Tall frames
Capris sold as standard length often land too high on long legs and end up looking like long shorts. Look for tall ranges or full trousers you can shorten, and aim for just below mid-calf.
1. White Capri Pants With Breezy Button-Down Shirt And Flat Sandals

White capris and a slightly oversized blue or striped button-down is the outfit I'd start any summer wardrobe with. Leave the top buttons open and tuck only the front so the waist shows without the shirt pulling tight across the back. Flat leather sandals or slim slides keep it light; switch to loafers and it passes in a casual office. A woven tote and thin gold jewelry are enough. A high rise makes the leg look longer here, and it also stops a white waistband from showing through a light shirt.
2. Black Capri Pants With Cropped Blazer And Heeled Mules

Black capris with a cropped blazer give you a city outfit that holds up from lunch to dinner. Ponte or a firm cotton blend is the fabric I'd pick, because both keep a crisp crease and don't bag at the knee by evening. The blazer can be beige, cream or black over a tank or bodysuit. It should end at or just above the waistband; a cropped jacket that stops mid-rib makes the capri look longer than it is. Pointed heeled mules extend the line, and a structured mini bag and dark sunglasses finish it.
3. Denim Capri Pants With Graphic Tee And White Sneakers

Denim capris with a vintage graphic tee loosely tucked at the front is the easiest weekend version. White sneakers and a canvas tote or crossbody make it practical for errands and coffee. Fit is everything with denim capris. I look for a leg that's slim but not skin-tight, ending just below the knee or at mid-calf. Rigid denim holds that hem crisply; very stretchy denim tends to creep up the leg as you sit and walk.
4. Athletic Capri Leggings With Fitted Tank Top And Chunky Sneakers

For travel days and park afternoons, sleek athletic capri leggings with a fitted tank are hard to beat. Choose a moisture-wicking knit with a high, wide waistband that won't roll down when you bend. A racerback or scoop-neck tank in a coordinating color, chunky sneakers, a cap and a belt bag finish it. Throw a zip hoodie or an oversized denim jacket over it for cool mornings. Hold the leggings up to the light before buying; thin athletic knit can turn see-through when stretched.
5. Satin Capri Pants With Camisole And Kitten Heels

Satin capris are the answer when you want to feel dressed up without wearing a dress. Champagne, blush or sage satin with a lace-trimmed camisole looks right at a rooftop dinner. Strappy kitten heels keep the leg long, and a small clutch is all you need. Satin shows every seam and wrinkle, so I'd steam the pair just before leaving and choose a cut with a little ease through the hip; tight satin pulls into lines across the front.
6. Striped Knit With White Capri Pants And Ballet Flats

A Breton-style striped knit tucked into crisp white capris is a classic for a reason. The slightly boxy top and the cropped trouser balance each other, and neutral or black ballet flats keep the outfit grounded. Add a red lip and a crossbody for a museum day or a pavement cafe. If the knit is heavy, half-tuck rather than fully tucking, so you don't get a ridge of bulk at the waistband.
7. Monochrome Black Capri Pants With Sleek Tank And Strappy Heels

All black with capris looks sharp and confident. A fitted black capri, in ponte, a legging style or a tailored cut, with a sleek black tank or bodysuit gives you one unbroken column. Black strappy heels keep that line going to the floor. Gold jewelry, a red lip or a colored bag adds the personality. My one check is that the blacks match in tone; a faded black capri next to a new jet-black tank makes the column look broken in daylight.
8. Linen Capri Pants With Tucked-In Tank And Strappy Sandals

On the hottest days I reach for linen capris. Linen breathes and dries fast, and a high-waisted pair in sand, cream or olive with a tucked ribbed tank or sleeveless blouse is a simple holiday outfit. Flat strappy sandals or leather slides, a woven tote and big sunglasses complete it, and a thin belt can mark the waist. Expect creases at the hip and behind the knee within an hour; that's the nature of linen, and it looks relaxed rather than sloppy if the fit is right.
9. Gingham Capri Pants With White Crop Top And Raffia Platforms

Gingham capris in navy, black or red check feel cheerful and a little retro. A fitted white crop top or tucked white tank lets the pattern stand on its own. Raffia platforms or espadrille wedges add height and texture. It's right for a picnic, a garden party or a weekend getaway, finished with a straw hat and minimal jewelry. Smaller checks are easier to wear on a petite frame; a large check on a wide leg adds visual width.
10. Capri Pants Suit With Matching Blazer And Pointed-Toe Heels

A matching capri suit in beige, cream or light grey feels modern because it breaks the rule that suits need full-length trousers. I look for a blazer that ends at the hip and capris with a clean center crease, which keeps the cropped leg looking tailored. A camisole or fine-knit tank underneath and pointed heels finish it. It works in a business-casual or creative office. Light grey shows creasing least of the three colors, which helps on a long day of sitting.
11. Off-Shoulder Top With Printed Capri Pants And Wedge Sandals

An off-shoulder blouse with printed capris balances a bare neckline with a busy lower half. Keep the blouse plain and lightweight so the print, whether florals, dots or a small geometric, has the attention. Cork or raffia wedges add height and suit summer. Keep the jewelry light for a date night or a baby shower. Off-shoulder tops need firm elastic to stay put, so try raising your arms in one before you commit to wearing it all afternoon.
12. Oversized Button-Down With Tight Black Capri Pants And Slides

An oversized white or striped shirt worn open or half-tucked over tight black capri leggings is the summer version of the shirt-and-leggings formula. The long shirt covers the hip and the cropped legging shows a bit of ankle, which looks lighter than full-length leggings. Flat slides or thong flip-flops keep it casual. Add a leather tote and dark sunglasses for a travel day. I'd make sure the shirt reaches at least the top of the thigh if the leggings are thin.
13. Silk Blouse With Black Capri Pants And Peep-Toe Heels

For an evening out that isn't a dress, a silk blouse tucked into tailored black capris looks refined. Silk's fluid drape against a structured, cropped hem is the whole point. Peep-toe or slingback heels add height and a slightly vintage note. Sculptural jewelry and an embellished clutch make it ready for a dinner party or the theater. Tuck the blouse fully and blouse it a touch over the waistband so it doesn't pull out when you sit.
14. Lightweight V-Neck Sweater With Tailored Capri Pants And Ankle Strap Heels

Summer evenings can turn cool after sunset, and a fine-gauge V-neck sweater in cotton or a linen blend is the right weight to bring along. The V draws the eye down the center of the body, which pairs well with a cropped leg. Ankle-strap heels or low block-heel sandals keep it polished for dinner outside. Finish with a fine pendant and a slim clutch. Ankle straps cut across the leg, so if you're petite, a strap in a skin-close shade keeps the line longer.
15. Cargo Capri Pants With Striped Tank Top And Colorful Flip-Flops

Cargo-style capri pants with toggle hems and patch pockets are practical and a bit sporty. Khaki or olive cargos with a striped tank and bright flip-flops or sport slides suit a weekend market or a festival. A belt bag and retro sunglasses finish it. Cargo pockets add bulk at the thigh, so I'd keep the top fitted and skip anything with extra volume on top.
16. Floral Capri Pants With White Blouse And Espadrille Wedges

Floral capris are cheerful, and a crisp white blouse keeps them from becoming loud. A classic button-down reads cleaner; a puff-sleeve blouse feels softer and more romantic. Espadrille wedges add height and texture. The print is what decides whether this looks modern. I go for muted or tonal florals rather than bright, high-contrast ones, which date quickly and can look busy from a distance. A straw bag and stud earrings make it ready for a garden party or a bridal shower.
17. Plaid Capri Pants With Neutral Cardigan And Heeled Sandals

Plaid capris in red and white or navy and cream give summer a preppy edge. A neutral cropped cardigan or a fitted knit in beige, camel or cream calms the pattern down. Heeled sandals in a matching neutral lift the outfit and keep the leg long. A structured handbag and pearl studs suit a casual Friday or a lunch meeting. Plaid has to line up at the side seams on a good pair; if the checks are mismatched at the seam, that's a sign of a cheaper cut.
18. Leather Jacket With White Tank And Capri Leggings

A cropped leather jacket over a white tank and black capri leggings is the edgiest outfit here. The tough jacket and the plain, sleek base play off each other. Heeled sandals or pointed boots make it right for a night out, with a mini crossbody and silver jewelry. Leather is warm, so I'd save this for summer evenings that genuinely cool down, and choose a lightweight lambskin over a heavy cowhide if you're buying one for warmer months.
19. Halter Neck Top With Black Capri Pants And Pointed Heels

A halter top with black capris is simple and striking. The halter shows the shoulders and arms, and the cropped black leg moves attention down to the shoes and ankles. Pointed heels in black or a metallic shade lengthen the leg line. A red mini bag adds the one bright note for cocktails or a rooftop bar. Halters suit broad or defined shoulders well; if you're full-busted, look for one with a wider strap and some internal support.
20. Matching Two-Piece Capri Set With Minimal Sandals

A matching two-piece in jersey or linen, a sleeveless crop top with wide-leg capris, takes all the decisions out of getting dressed. One fabric from top to bottom makes the outfit look intentional with no extra pieces. Minimal flat or barely-there heeled sandals keep the focus on the set. Muted sage, soft grey-blue and warm terracotta all look modern. It's my favorite travel outfit because jersey packs small and comes out of a suitcase barely creased.
21. Wide-Leg Capri Pants With Fitted Crop Top And Platform Sandals

Wide-leg capris are more dramatic than slim ones and move beautifully as you walk. Their volume needs a fitted crop top or tucked bodysuit to keep the shape balanced. Platform sandals add height and stop the wide, cropped leg from making you look shorter. Chiffon or a cotton-linen blend gives the best drape. I'd skip this cut if you're very petite and dislike heels, since a wide cropped leg on flat shoes can cut the figure in two.
22. Blue Striped Shirt With White Capri Pants And Loafers

A blue striped button-down tucked into bright white capris is coastal and preppy, and it suits a casual office or a weekend away equally well. Leather loafers or backless mules keep it polished without feeling dressy. Roll the shirt sleeves and add a brown leather belt to tie in the shoes. It's one of the outfits that looks more effort than it took. White capris need an opaque fabric, so check them in daylight before wearing them out.
23. Lace Blouse With Gingham Capri Pants And Heeled Sandals

Mixing textures makes an outfit feel rich. A lace blouse in cream, white or blush with gingham capri pants in a slim or straight cut looks feminine and fun. Neutral heeled sandals keep it polished for a bridal shower or a dressy daytime party. Pearl drops and a small clutch suit the romantic mood. Lace often needs a camisole underneath, so I'd plan one in a skin-close shade that won't show through.
24. Seersucker Capri Pants With Sleeveless Top And Wedge Espadrilles

Seersucker is made for heat. Its puckered weave holds the fabric slightly off the skin, so air moves and you stay cooler. Seersucker capris in a soft stripe or pastel with a fitted sleeveless top in a coordinating shade feel ready for a holiday. Wedge espadrilles add height and texture. It suits resort days and summer lunches. The bonus is that seersucker barely needs ironing, since the puckers hide creases.
25. Head-To-Toe White Capri Pants With Neutral Accessories

All white, head to toe, looks clean and expensive. White capris with a sleeveless knit, poplin blouse or plain tank form the base; tan sandals, a beige structured bag, tortoiseshell sunglasses and soft gold jewelry keep the extras warm. Mixing slightly different whites adds depth so the outfit doesn't look flat. I'd keep the fabrics different too, a knit top with a woven capri, so the whites read as texture. It's my pick for rooftop parties and holiday dinners.
Turning Full-Length Trousers Into Capris at Home
If you have trousers that fit well at the hip but feel too heavy for summer, shortening them into capris is a simple sewing job. It's one of the most useful alterations I recommend, because the fit at the waist and seat, the hard part, is already right.
- Put the trousers on with the shoes you'll wear and mark the finished length with pins on both legs. Legs are rarely identical, so check each one.
- Add a hem allowance of about one and a half inches below the mark and cut.
- Finish the raw edge with a zigzag or overlocker, then fold up once and press.
- Stitch by hand with a blind hem for tailored trousers, or by machine for denim and casual cotton.
- For a slim leg, try on before cutting a slit at the side seam. A small vent above the hem helps a narrow capri move over the calf.
Linen and cotton are the easiest to shorten. Stretch denim works, but use a stretch or zigzag stitch so the hem doesn't snap. I'd leave lined or pleated trousers to a tailor, since the lining has to be shortened separately and pleats need to be matched.
Get the Hem Right and Capris Look Modern
Capris look current again because the cuts and fabrics have improved, and because people are styling them with care. Balance is the rule I come back to: slim capris with looser or structured tops, wide-leg capris with a fitted top. Shoes matter more than with full-length trousers, and kitten heels, pointed mules, strappy sandals and ballet flats all keep the leg looking long. Start with one pair in a neutral, check where the hem lands on your calf, and build out from there.
