Swimwear is the category where my plus-size clients feel the most nervous, and the least well served by the sizing. A suit has to hold up when wet, stay put when you climb out of the pool and support a full bust without any of the tricks a regular bra uses. The good news is that plus-size swimwear is far better cut than it used to be, with underwire tops, longer torsos and real cup sizing. Below are 25 full pool outfits, from high-waisted bikinis and swim dresses to cover-ups you can wear to lunch, and with each one I've noted the fit or fabric detail that decides whether it works on the day.

Swimsuit Sizing by Bust and Torso Length
Plus-size swimsuits fail for two reasons more than any other: not enough bust support and a torso that's too short. I check both before I even think about color.
- If you wear a D cup or larger, look for suits sold by bra size or with underwire. A dress-size suit is cut for an average cup and often runs out of room.
- Measure torso length from the top of the shoulder, down between the legs and back up. Brands that offer long-torso suits list this number.
- The band should fit firmly around the ribs. If the straps dig into your shoulders, the band is too loose, not the straps too short.
- Swim fabric relaxes a little when wet. A suit that feels slightly firm dry usually feels right in the water.
In the fitting room, I ask clients to sit, squat and raise both arms. A suit that stays put through all three will stay put at the pool.
1. Plus Size High-Waisted Bikini Pool Outfit

A high-waisted bikini is the suit I suggest most to clients who want a two-piece without showing the stomach. The bottom sits above the hip bone and marks the waist. I'd choose an underwire or halter-tie top, since a full bust needs more support than a triangle gives. Tie a sheer mesh sarong at the hip for the walk to the bar. Platform sandals, big black sunglasses and a straw tote big enough for sunscreen and a book finish it. Check the waistband when you sit; a narrow one rolls down.
2. Plus Size Cut-Out One-Piece Pool Outfit

Cut-outs on a one-piece cover the torso and show a little skin at the side or waist. The cut-out edges are what I look at first: on a full figure, a cut-out with thin binding digs in and pushes the skin out, while a wide, lined edge lies flat. Keep high-waisted linen shorts nearby for the snack bar, and wear flat slides. A few gold chains or hoops add some polish. A wide-brim straw hat gives shade. Expect a cut-out tan line after a full day.
3. Plus Size Tankini with Shorts Pool Outfit

A tankini with swim shorts gives the ease of a two-piece with more coverage. The top skims the torso, a shelf bra gives a little lift and the shorts let you climb, kneel and chase children. A shelf bra won't hold a large bust during swimming or games, so I'd choose an underwire tankini for that. A turquoise and navy color-blocked set looks clean. Pull on a light terry pullover and rubber pool slides, with sporty sunglasses, and you're set for a family pool day.
4. Plus Size Swim Dress Pool Outfit

A swim dress solves the pool outfit in one piece. The skirt falls over hips and thighs, and a tummy-control panel through the bodice gives shape and support. Black with white polka dots is the classic and doesn't date. I'd check that the skirt is short enough to swim in; a long skirt drags when wet. Away from the water, a cropped denim jacket and espadrille wedges make it a lunch outfit, with a red lip and cat-eye sunglasses.
5. Plus Size Wrap One-Piece Pool Outfit

A wrap-front one-piece pulls in at the waist and lifts the bust, making an hourglass outline. Emerald or burgundy looks rich and deliberate in sun. Put a matching light kimono over the shoulders and wear metallic flat sandals. A structured rattan bag and pearl studs finish it. Wrap fronts can gape at the cross when you lean over, so I'd test it by bending forward in the fitting room. It suits a resort pool or a backyard gathering.
6. Plus Size Plunge One-Piece Pool Outfit

A deep V one-piece lengthens the neck and draws the eye up, which balances a full bust. I'd only wear a plunge with a wide underband or underwire; without one, a large bust can slide out when you move. Terracotta or espresso brown both look warm on tanned skin. A crinkled chiffon duster moves in the breeze. Leather-look flat sandals, a crossbody and a few fine chains that follow the neckline make it a resort-afternoon outfit.
8. Plus Size Sporty Tankini Pool Outfit

For cannonballs and water volleyball, a sporty tankini with bike shorts stays in place. I'd pick racerback tops because they don't slip off the shoulder, and a wide elastic waist keeps the shorts up when you jump in. Neon lime or hot coral brings an activewear feel. A water-resistant zip jacket, quick-dry water sneakers, a cap and a sport watch keep it practical. Bike-short swim bottoms also stop thighs rubbing between swims.
7. Plus Size Bandeau Bikini with Cover-Up Outfit

A strapless bandeau top shows off the shoulders and collarbone. On a full bust, I'd only choose a bandeau with boning or a silicone grip at the top edge and a hidden halter strap for the water. Match it with high-rise bottoms in the same tropical print, and throw an oversized white linen shirt over it, open, with the sleeves rolled. Woven slides, a beaded anklet, a canvas tote and wire-rim sunglasses take it from the pool to a waterfront lunch.
9. Plus Size Retro Bikini Pool Outfit

A retro bikini with a sweetheart neckline and high-cut legs is cheerful and gives enough coverage to feel secure. Cherry red or sunny yellow with ruching across the front looks fun; ruching also hides the small wrinkles that swim fabric shows when wet. A printed scarf in the hair, cat-eye sunglasses, cork wedges and a wicker bag finish the throwback mood. High-cut legs lengthen the leg, but they need a longer torso so the suit doesn't ride up.
10. Plus Size Monokini Pool Outfit

A monokini sits between a bikini and a one-piece. I'd look for one with a built-in waistband or side panels that hold the middle; the open sections need firm edges to lie flat. A black one with gold hardware looks sleek. A long sheer black cover-up adds drama, and a gold cuff and statement hoops dress it up. Leather slides and a small structured bag take it to a rooftop pool party. Gold hardware can tarnish in chlorine, so rinse the suit right after swimming.
11. Plus Size Ruffled Bikini Pool Outfit

A ruffle at the bust adds softness and draws the eye up to the face. A ruffled top with classic high-waisted bottoms in gingham looks fresh. Ruffles also add volume, so if you'd prefer the bust to look smaller, I'd skip this one for a plain underwire style. Tie a light chambray shirt around the waist as a cover-up. Espadrille flats, a straw fedora, a rattan crossbody and pink-tinted sunglasses keep it casual.
12. Plus Size Color-Block One-Piece Pool Outfit

Color-blocking puts darker panels where you want less attention and lighter ones where you want more. A one-piece with diagonal panels in cobalt and white looks crisp and sporty, and the diagonal line breaks up the torso. After the pool, pull on high-waisted white linen trousers and platform slides. A canvas tote and thick white sunglasses keep it graphic. I'd look at where the panel seams fall on your body; a seam running across the widest point does the opposite of what you want.
13. Plus Size Mesh Cover-Up Pool Outfit

A sheer mesh cover-up shows the suit while covering you for the walk around the pool. Start with a solid black one-piece or bikini, then add a full-length mesh cover-up with long sleeves. Black heeled mules and a small clutch take it to a sunset dinner, with one bold cuff. Mesh catches on rough pool edges and loungers, so I'd take it off before sitting on wicker or concrete.
14. Plus Size Kimono Cover-Up Pool Outfit

A printed kimono floats over curves and is one of the most comfortable cover-ups to own. Pick a floral or watercolor print and wear it over a solid suit in one of the print's colors. Flat sandals with slim straps, tassel earrings and a woven bucket bag keep it relaxed. Tie the hair in a low bun with a bright scarf. A kimono with side slits is easier to walk in than a wide, open one, which flaps in wind. It's an easy cover for a market walk after lounging.
15. Plus Size Sarong Pool Outfit

A sarong is one piece of fabric that ties several ways: a halter dress, a skirt at the waist or a strapless mini. Batik or a tropical leaf print looks lively. Under it, a triangle bikini in a neutral tone lets the sarong stand out; if you need more support, swap in an underwire top in the same color. Beaded flat sandals, a shell anklet and stacked bracelets finish it. A sarong packs flat and rayon ones dry fast, which is why I put one in every holiday case.
16. Plus Size Swim Romper Pool Outfit

A swim romper joins a one-piece with shorts, so you can paddleboard, walk the beach or chase children without adjusting anything. A zip front and adjustable waist tie let you set the fit. I'd size swim rompers by torso length; a short one pulls at the shoulders and rides up. A cropped hoodie, water sneakers, a backpack cooler and sporty sunglasses make it a busy family day outfit.
17. Plus Size One-Shoulder Bikini Pool Outfit

A one-shoulder top draws a diagonal line across the body. With a wide band, it gives a full bust more support than most strapless styles, although I'd still choose one with a hidden second strap for active swimming. Mix a solid top with printed high-waisted bottoms, or the reverse. A sheer crochet cover-up skirt adds texture, and heeled mules, a beaded necklace and a fold-over woven clutch make it a pool-party look.
18. Plus Size Underwire Bikini Pool Outfit

An underwire bikini gives the lift and shape of a good bra, which is why I recommend it to clients with a large bust. Look for adjustable straps and a hook back so you can set the band; the band should do most of the work, not the straps. Brief or high-waisted bottoms both work. A tropical floral set, a white terry cover-up dress, cushioned flip-flops, tortoiseshell hoops and a clear beach bag finish it. Buy by bra size if the brand offers it.
19. Plus Size High-Neck One-Piece Pool Outfit

A high-neck one-piece frames the face and covers the whole bust, so the attention goes to the legs and shoulders. Zippered fronts let you adjust the neckline. Sapphire or amethyst looks rich. A cropped white rash guard adds sun protection for long swims. Sporty slides, a cap and mirrored aviators make it the suit for laps or snorkeling. High necks can feel tight under the arms, so I'd raise both arms in the fitting room.
20. Plus Size Crochet Swimsuit Pool Outfit

Crochet swimsuits add a handmade texture. Buy only a fully lined crochet one-piece; unlined crochet goes see-through and stretches out of shape when wet. Sand, ivory or rust suit the crafted look. A long fringed vest over it, suede flat sandals, layered beaded necklaces, a suede bucket bag and round wire sunglasses fit a resort afternoon. Crochet takes a long time to dry, so I'd keep it for lounging rather than lap swimming.
21. Plus Size Longline Bikini Top Outfit

A longline bikini top runs down the ribs like a crop top, which gives the bust more support and makes a smooth line. With high-cut bottoms, it lengthens the leg and marks the waist. One color for both pieces, olive or dusty rose, looks neat. A matching sarong skirt tied low adds coverage. Strappy flat sandals, a canvas belt bag and small hoops finish it. I'd check the longline band doesn't roll up when you bend; a band with boning holds best.
22. Plus Size Skirted Bikini Pool Outfit

A bikini with a matching swim skirt covers the hips and thighs, so you can go from the water to a table without adding a cover-up. Navy with white trim feels nautical. Espadrille sandals, a striped beach bag and a red lip suit it. Keep a light cardigan folded in your tote for when the breeze comes in. Many swim skirts have built-in briefs, which I'd look for so the skirt doesn't float up when you swim.
23. Plus Size Animal Print Swimsuit Outfit

A bold animal print takes all the attention, so keep the rest simple. A cheetah-print one-piece with a square neckline is a full look on its own. Cover it with an open black linen maxi dress so the suit shows at the front. Black slides, gold studs and small black sunglasses finish it. Busy prints also hide the wrinkles and wet patches that show on solids, which is a real advantage at the pool.
24. Plus Size Neon Swimsuit Pool Outfit

Neon brightens in sun and water, and a neon pink or lime one-piece reads clearly in photos. I'd keep neon to the suit only and add a white crochet cover-up skirt to calm it. Clear jelly sandals, a transparent tote and a single acrylic bangle feel playful. A slick high ponytail keeps the hair out of the way. Neon fades faster than dark colors in chlorine and sun, so rinse it in cool water after every swim.
25. Plus Size Black One-Piece Pool Outfit

A black one-piece is the suit I'd buy first. It never dates, makes the outline look longer and goes with every cover-up on this list. A low back or gold hardware makes it less plain. For evening, layer a black and gold printed kimono, metallic heeled sandals and a black clutch, with bold gold earrings and a red lip. Black hides shine and wet marks better than any other color, which is one more reason it earns its place.
Chlorine, Sunscreen and How Long a Suit Lasts
Most swimsuits are nylon or polyester blended with spandex. The spandex gives stretch, and chlorine, heat and sunscreen all break it down over time. That's why a suit can lose its hold after one heavy summer.
Rinse straight after swimming
Rinse your suit in cool, fresh water as soon as you can, even if you won't wash it until later. Leaving chlorine in the fabric does the most damage.
Hand wash and dry flat
Wash it by hand in cool water with a mild detergent, press the water out in a towel and dry it flat in the shade. Wringing, the dryer and hot sun all weaken the stretch.
Choose polyester for frequent pool use
Swimsuits with a high share of polyester resist chlorine better than nylon blends. If you swim laps several times a week, it's worth reading the fabric label before you buy.
Let sunscreen sink in first
Some sunscreens leave yellow marks on white and pale suits. I put sunscreen on before getting dressed and give it a few minutes to absorb, which keeps light colors cleaner for longer. Rotating two suits also helps, because spandex recovers better when it gets a day off.
One Suit That Fits, Then the Fun Ones
If I were helping you build a pool wardrobe from scratch, I'd start with a well-fitted black one-piece with real bust support, then add one two-piece you love and one cover-up that works as an outfit on its own. Fit and support come first, color and print second. A hat, the right sandals and a cover-up turn any of these suits into a full outfit. Wear the one you'll forget about once you're in the water.
