Shopping at 5'4" and under usually means buying the right thing in the wrong proportions. Banana Republic's petite sizing is one of the few lines I trust to adjust more than the hem: shoulder seams, rise and inseam all move with the size. I've put together 25 outfits from that range, covering office days, a vacation capsule and a few holiday evenings. There are poplin tops, jumpsuits, painter pants and sculpted blazers, and for each one I've noted what I look at first when a petite client tries it on.

Cropped, Ankle or Full Length on a Short Leg
Half the trousers in these outfits are cropped or ankle length, and petite women get mixed advice about both. Here's how I decide, based on where the hem actually lands on the leg.
- Ankle length should stop at or just above the ankle bone. Pair it with a low-cut shoe, a loafer, flat or pump, so a bit of skin connects leg and foot.
- Cropped wide legs land a few inches higher, around the lower calf. They're best with a heel or a pointed shoe; with a chunky flat they make the leg look stubby.
- Full length wide legs need a heel and should almost cover the shoe. They give the longest line of the three, but only if you commit to the height.
Petite cropped styles are usually shortened from the regular crop, so check the listed inseam rather than the name. A cropped pant that ends at mid-calf on a taller woman can end at your ankle, and then it's simply an ankle pant.
1. Poplin Collared Top With Wide-Leg Cropped Chino Pants And Loafer Mules

Start with a crisp poplin collared top whose hem lands at the top of the hip bone, not below it. The cinched hemline gives it shape, and it sits nicely over wide-leg high-rise cropped chinos in khaki. Even the petite chinos can run long on very short legs, so I cuff them once to show the ankle; it reads utility rather than unfinished. Cognac vegan leather loafer mules with cushioned insoles, a slim leather belt and small gold hoops. Nothing here adds bulk, which is what keeps a wide leg from swamping you.
2. Smocked Mini Dress With Vegan Leather Tall Slouch Boots

A smocked mini with slouchy boots is one of the easiest transitional outfits I know. Smocking stretches with you, and long sleeves in a rich autumn color make bare legs feel seasonal. The boots are deep chocolate vegan leather, tall enough that the gap between hem and boot shaft stays short, and that short gap is what makes legs look longer on a petite frame. Slouch boots do pool at the ankle, so pick a pair with a firm enough shaft that it doesn't collapse completely. A matching brown crossbody and a few gold rings take it from brunch to evening.
3. Textured Sweater With Skinny Mid-Rise Jeans And Pointed-Toe Flats

Some outfits get worn every week because nothing about them needs thinking. This is one. A textured crewneck in oatmeal or cream, dark-wash skinny mid-rise jeans and black patent pointed flats. The petite jeans fit through the calf without stacking at the ankle, and that clean ankle is what the pointed toe needs to lengthen the leg. Textured knits add width, so I keep this sweater at hip length and slightly fitted rather than oversized. A structured neutral tote and a small pendant for coffee runs and casual Fridays.
4. Mid-Rise Relaxed Painter Pull-On Pants With Cropped Denim Vest And Flat Sandals

Relaxed pants usually fight a petite frame, but this mid-rise painter pull-on in soft cotton twill is an exception. The cropped length shows the ankle, and the pull-on waist lies flat at the front with no fly to bunch. On top, a cropped denim vest over a white tank ends at the natural waist, which balances the wider leg. Nude or tan flat sandals carry the leg line into the foot. A woven tote makes it a weekend outfit for market runs and park walks. Twill softens with every wash, so buy them fitted rather than loose.
5. Petite Jumpsuit In Vino Rosso With Pointed-Toe Heels

A vino rosso jumpsuit does all the work in one piece. The deep burgundy is cut in petite sizing, runs true to size and has a little stretch through the bodice and hips, so sitting down doesn't pull. The defined waist stops the volume from swamping a smaller frame, and the V-neck draws the eye up. Pointed heels in nude or black patent extend the leg. A sleek clutch and drop earrings for date night or a holiday party. Check the crotch depth when you sit; if it pulls, size up and belt it.
6. White Lotus Mini Dress With Italian Leather Kitten-Heel Sandals

Vacation clothes have to pack small and still feel special. This crisp white mini has adjustable pull-on straps and a ruched elastic back, so it fits without a zipper and rolls flat in a suitcase. On a petite frame the hem lands short enough to feel playful but not so short that it needs altering. Tan Italian leather kitten-heel sandals stay walkable for sightseeing or a long dinner. A woven clutch and big sunglasses. White cotton shows sunscreen marks, so let it dry fully before you dress.
7. Poplin Bubble Hem Crop Top With Poplin Maxi Skirt And Slingback Pumps

Matching sets are the petite shortcut to one long vertical line. A poplin bubble-hem crop top over a poplin maxi skirt in the same fabric and color reads as a single piece. The crop sits at the natural waist with only a sliver of skin, and the maxi moves freely without adding width. A maxi on a short frame needs some height underneath, so I'd wear the slingback pumps here rather than flats. A slim metallic bracelet and a structured mini bag. Poplin creases, so steam it after unpacking.
8. Lightweight Cashmere Crewneck Sweater With Mid-Rise '90s Loose Jeans And Sneakers

Lightweight cashmere is the sweater I recommend most to petites, because a fine-gauge knit drapes instead of adding bulk. Here it's soft heather gray with mid-rise '90s loose jeans in classic blue, relaxed through the hip and thigh, cropped to the ankle. Tuck just the front of the sweater, otherwise loose jeans and a loose knit together hide your waist completely. White leather sneakers, a canvas tote and a fine chain. The outfit for weekend errands, school drop-off and travel days.
9. White Lotus Wrap Dress With Strappy Sandals And Woven Clutch

Wrap dresses suit most bodies, but on a petite one the length and the depth of the V decide it. The White Lotus wrap has an adjustable tie and soft drape that create a waist without volume. It's a midi that shows a little ankle, and the V lengthens the neck. Flat strappy sandals in metallic or neutral keep it light, and a woven clutch adds texture. Outdoor weddings, bridal showers and dinners outside are where I'd wear it. Pin the cross-over if it gapes when you lean forward.
10. Sculpted Blazer With Matching High-Rise Trousers And Silky Button-Up

Tailoring decides power dressing on a petite frame. This sculpted blazer has princess seams and waist darts that follow the body, and with matching high-rise wide-leg trousers in deep navy or charcoal it makes one long, unbroken line. Underneath, an ivory or champagne silky button-up softens the suit. Pointed pumps in a matching color and a structured leather tote finish it. I always check that the blazer ends at the hip bone; a longer one on a short torso cuts the leg in half. Wear this for presentations and interviews.
11. Pleated Mini Skort With Matching Vest And Neutral Wedges

A pleated mini skort with a matching vest looks put-together and still lets you sit on a picnic blanket without worrying. The built-in shorts handle the practical side and the vest gives structure up top. Pleats do add a little width at the hip, so keep the vest fitted. Neutral wedge sandals lengthen the leg and stay comfortable through a long brunch, a baby shower or a shopping afternoon. A small crossbody and fine gold jewelry. It's a set that looks pulled together with almost no effort in the morning.
12. Linen Pull-On Ankle Pants With Tank Top And Flat Sandals

Linen pull-on ankle pants with a 25-inch inseam are the hot-weather pant I'd pack first. That inseam lands at the ankle on most petites, and the relaxed hip and thigh let air move. Tuck in a fitted white or ivory tank for a clean column. Flat tan leather sandals, a straw hat and a big canvas tote for beach days and slow weekend walks. Linen bags out at the knees and seat as you wear it, so choose your usual size rather than the larger one.
13. Belted Jumpsuit With Patent Leather Slides

A belted jumpsuit in soft olive or black is my grab-and-go piece for days without time to think. The belt sits at the narrowest point and gives shape, and the relaxed leg keeps it current. Black or burgundy patent slides add shine without heel height. A sleek shoulder bag and layered chains. It goes from a casual office to a gallery opening or dinner with friends. On a petite frame, a relaxed leg works best when it's cropped to show the ankle, otherwise the jumpsuit reads heavy at the bottom.
14. Ruffle-Hem Pants With Classic Pumps

A ruffle-hem trouser is the playful piece in a tailored wardrobe. These in deep charcoal or black have a small flounce at the ankle that moves when you walk. Petites should keep the ruffle small; a deep flounce sits too low and shortens the leg. Pointed pumps in nude or black patent make the ruffle look deliberate. Tuck in a fitted knit or a cream silk shell so the pants stay the focus. A structured bag and pearl studs for the office, a dinner date or a networking event.
15. Trench Coat With Leggings And White Tee And Sneakers

A petite trench is one of the hardest-working coats you can own. Over good black leggings and a crisp white crewneck tee, it looks finished in seconds. White leather sneakers keep it comfortable, and the belted waist stops the layers swallowing a smaller frame. Pick leggings thick enough that they don't go sheer when you bend. A sleek backpack or big tote and dark sunglasses complete it for travel days, school drop-off and Saturday coffee.
16. Denim Jacket Over A Slip Dress With Ankle Boots

A petite denim jacket is my go-to for carrying a silky slip dress into cooler weather. The cropped denim stops at the natural waist and balances the length of a bias-cut midi or mini slip below it. Bias-cut satin clings to anything beneath it, so a smooth slip underneath matters. Black block-heel ankle boots add height and a little edge, and a chain-strap bag brings some polish. Dinner dates and evening gallery walks are its territory, where soft fabric and a structured jacket balance each other.
17. Vegan Leather Moto Jacket With Black Trousers And Heels

A vegan leather moto jacket in a petite cut changes the mood of almost anything under it. Here it goes over a white or gray tee tucked into high-waisted black tailored trousers. The moto's cropped length and defined shoulders give structure up top, and the trouser's clean line lengthens the bottom half. Pointed black heels continue the dark base, and a clutch with silver hardware adds some shine. Moto jackets on petites should end above the hip bone; anything longer loses the cropped effect. Wear it from work straight to an evening plan.
18. Off-The-Shoulder Top With Satin Skirt And Heels

For a romantic evening, a blush or ivory off-the-shoulder top with a satin midi skirt. The neckline frames the collarbone and lifts the eye, and the bias-cut skirt skims without clinging. The petite midi stops below the knee, above the widest part of the calf, which is the spot I aim for. Metallic strappy heeled sandals add height. A delicate bracelet and drop earrings are all it needs. Date nights, anniversaries, cocktail parties. A strapless bra with a silicone grip edge keeps everything in place.
19. Ribbed Mini Sweater Skirt With Fitted Turtleneck And Knee-High Boots

A ribbed mini sweater skirt in camel or charcoal with a fitted turtleneck is cold-weather texture done neatly. The A-line skirt flatters petite hips, and the close turtleneck keeps the top half slim. Knee-high boots in black or dark brown leather close most of the gap to the hem. A long wool coat in a matching neutral and a structured crossbody. Ribbed knits stretch at the seat after hours of sitting, so let the skirt rest a day between wears. Office days, holiday shopping and dinner with friends.
20. White Lotus Stretch Chino Bermuda Shorts With Tie-Front Shirt And Espadrilles

Tailored Bermuda shorts with a tie-front poplin shirt are hot-weather polish. The stretch chino holds its shape and moves with you. On a petite frame, Bermuda length is risky because it can end at the widest part of the thigh; the knotted shirt at the waist and the jute espadrille wedges fix that by raising the visual waist and adding height. A straw tote and a fine anklet for resort days, sightseeing and outdoor lunches.
21. Floral Pintuck Dress With Strappy Sandals

Pintucks are tiny stitched pleats, and down the front of this floral dress they give fine vertical lines that read as length. The V-neck and defined waist do the rest, and the floaty skirt moves easily. It's scaled for petites, so the waist seam sits at your waist. Flat strappy sandals in soft metallic or neutral make it walkable, with a small rattan bag and gold hoops. Garden parties, bridal showers, sunny brunches. Keep the floral small; a big print on a small frame tends to take over.
22. Windowpane Blouse With Chambray Lightweight Crop Pants And Ballet Flats

A sleeveless windowpane blouse in crisp cotton gives a summer work outfit some character without looking formal. With chambray crop pants that show a sliver of ankle, it looks fresh and still professional. Blush or nude ballet flats keep the leg line going, since a shoe close to your skin tone hides where the leg stops. A woven tote and a simple watch. It suits office days, teaching and lunch meetings. If your office runs cold, keep a fine cardigan in the tote.
23. Neutral Monochrome Ensemble With Wide-Leg Pants And Structured Handbag

Head-to-toe neutrals are one of my strongest petite tools, because one color from shoulder to shoe is one vertical line. Start with warm beige or ivory wide-leg high-rise trousers and a matching knit or sleeveless shell tucked in. A cream or tan top-handle bag, pointed mules or heels, minimal gold and sleek sunglasses. Vary the textures, a matte knit against a smoother trouser, so the outfit has depth. It looks expensive mostly because the colors match exactly.
24. Cashmere-Linen One-Shoulder Sweater Top With Linen Blend Trousers And Heeled Sandals

A one-shoulder sweater in a cashmere-linen blend is a slightly unexpected summer piece. The blend breathes like linen and has a soft hand from the cashmere. The asymmetric neckline pulls attention up to the shoulders. High-waisted linen-blend trousers in cream or sand make it relaxed but dressy, and neutral heeled sandals add height. A simple leather clutch and sculptural earrings for a rooftop dinner, engagement party or evening wedding. One-shoulder tops need a strapless bra, and the neckline needs to sit flat; try it seated before you buy.
25. Bomber Jacket With Denim Mini Skirt And White Sneakers

An olive or black satin bomber brings some sporty polish to a casual outfit. Layer it over a fitted white or gray tee tucked into an A-line denim mini. The bomber's ribbed hem should land at your waist; a longer one bunches over a short skirt and makes the legs look shorter. White leather sneakers, a crossbody and hoops. Weekend outings, concerts and casual dinners. Satin shows water spots, so this one stays home in the rain.
The Thirds Rule for Jackets, Skirts and Dresses
When a petite outfit looks off and nothing fits badly, the problem is usually proportion. The guide I use is simple: split the body into roughly one third and two thirds, never half and half.
Short on top, long below
A cropped jacket, a tucked top or a vest ending at the waist, over a long skirt or high-waisted trousers. This is the most reliable version for petites because it makes the legs the longer part.
Long on top, short below
A longer top or jacket over a mini, like the bomber or the smocked dress with tall boots. It works if the bottom part is clearly short and the boots or skin tone shoes continue the line.
Where it goes wrong
A hip-length sweater over a knee-length skirt splits you exactly in half, and both parts look shorter. Tuck the sweater, swap to a longer skirt or add a belt, and the same pieces work again. A quick check in the mirror: if your eye stops at the middle of your body, move the break point up toward the waist.
What a Petite Wardrobe Really Needs From Banana Republic
Petite dressing shouldn't mean fewer options or constant visits to the tailor. Banana Republic's petite range scales everything from blazers to jumpsuits to trousers, so a lot of it fits straight off the rack. If I were buying only three pieces, I'd pick the sculpted suit, the linen ankle pants and the jumpsuit. Then come back to the same three ideas every time you dress: a defined waist, a visible ankle and a clean vertical line.
