Most fit complaints I hear from curvy clients come down to two things: a waistband that gapes at the back and a dress that tents from the bust down. Both happen because the garment was cut for a straighter body. These 25 outfits are chosen to follow the shape you already have. Hourglass, pear, apple or rectangle shape, the aim is the same: mark the waist, give the hips room, and balance shoulder against hem. For each one I've added what I check in the fitting room and when I'd pass.

Size to Your Fullest Measurement, Then Tailor the Rest
Curvy bodies rarely match one size across bust, waist and hip, and most shopping mistakes start there. I take three measurements with a soft tape: the fullest part of the bust, the natural waist, and the fullest part of the hip and seat. Then I compare each with the brand's size chart, not the size on your last purchase.
The rule I follow is simple. Buy the size that fits your largest measurement for that garment, then take in the rest. A dress that fits your hips and gapes at the waist is a short visit to a tailor. A dress that fits your waist and won't close over your hips can't be fixed. For tops it's the bust that counts; for trousers and skirts, the hip and seat.
- Easy alterations: taking in a waist, shortening a hem, adding a back dart to trousers, shortening straps.
- Harder ones: letting out a seam with little allowance, changing shoulder width, moving a waist seam.
- Leave it on the rack if the shoulders or bust don't fit, because those are rarely worth the cost to alter.
1. Wrap Dress And Heeled Sandals Outfit For Curves

I trust a wrap dress on a curvy frame more than almost anything else. The tie lands wherever your waist is smallest, and the crossover gives a full bust its own room instead of pulling a button placket open. Pick a heavier jersey or crepe; thin jersey clings to every line underneath. Knee length and slim-strap heeled sandals keep the leg long. A pendant that echoes the V and a crossbody bag finish it, and you'll rarely need to adjust it once it's tied.
2. Bodycon Midi Dress Outfit With Strappy Heels

People avoid the bodycon midi dress because of how unforgiving the cheap ones are. The good ones have ruching or panel seams that follow the waist and shape the hip, and a fabric thick enough that nothing shows through. I always check the back view, because thin bodycon shows every seam of your underwear. Midi length keeps it dressy. Barely there strappy heels, a cuff and a small clutch are enough for an evening out.
3. Peplum Top And Pencil Skirt Outfit

A peplum builds an hourglass in one move. The bodice nips in, and the flare adds a little volume at the hip so the waist reads smaller. Over a high-waist pencil skirt in a matching or tonal shade, the line stays smooth from bust to knee. The thing I check is where the peplum starts: it should join right at your natural waist, because one that sits lower cuts you in half. Nude-for-you pointed pumps and an optional slim belt make it office ready.
4. High-Waisted Wide Leg Trousers And Fitted Bodysuit

Contrast is what makes this pair work. High-waisted wide legs mark the smallest part of the torso, then the volume below balances fuller hips and thighs. A bodysuit keeps the tuck flat. Back gap is the usual complaint, so look for a contour waistband, which is curved and cut higher at the back, or have a tailor add a dart. Block-heel sandals or pumps carry the width of the trouser for work or brunch.
5. Fit And Flare Dress Outfit With Ankle Strap Heels

Fit and flare is the safest dress shape I know. The bodice holds the ribs and bust, and the skirt opens at the waist so hips and thighs have room to move. On a full bust, check that the bodice has darts or princess seams; a flat front squashes you and pushes the waist seam up. A thin ribbon belt adds definition if the seam is subtle. Ankle-strap heels, pearl studs and a top-handle bag suit a shower or garden party.
6. Belted Jumpsuit Outfit For Hourglass Figure

A belted jumpsuit puts the waist in the middle of one piece, so there's no top and bottom to coordinate. A wrap or deep V bodice helps balance a full bust. Wide legs add balance at the hip; tapered legs give a slimmer line. Jumpsuits are hard to fit on a long torso, so do a full sit in the fitting room before buying, and put the belt at the natural waist, never the hip. Tonal pointed pumps, hoops and a metallic clutch take it from desk to dinner.
7. Corset Top And High-Waisted Jeans Outfit

Real boning is what separates a corset top from a printed imitation. It pulls the waist in and supports the bust, giving a strong hourglass without feeling like costume. Neutral shades pair easily with high-waisted straight or skinny jeans, and the rise reinforces the waist. Size by your bust and ribcage, not your usual top size, because a corset that's too small gapes at the top edge. A cropped jacket gives coverage without hiding the shape; heeled mules suit a concert.
8. Ruched Midi Dress Outfit With Heeled Sandals

Ruching gathers fabric across the waist, hip or side seam, and the folds draw the eye exactly there. A ruched midi contours without squeezing, so you can sit and eat in it. I'd size up if the ruching looks stretched flat on you, since the gathers need slack to do their job. An asymmetric or one-shoulder neckline adds interest, and minimal heeled sandals with a satin clutch are enough for date nights or engagement parties.
9. Off-Shoulder Maxi Dress Outfit With Wedges

Bare shoulders pull the eye up toward the face and collarbones, so an off-shoulder maxi frames curves while the skirt flows. The waist is what gets lost in all that length, which is why I look for a waist seam or self-tie. On a large bust, the elastic neckline needs to be firm or it slides down by lunch, and a strapless bra that actually fits matters here. Wedges add height on uneven ground. Gold bracelets and hoops keep it warm for vacation.
10. Monochrome Top And Trousers Outfit With Heels

Dressing in one color makes a long line that helps you look taller and sleeker. For a curvy figure it does something else too: the eye sees the outline, not where colors change. A silk camisole with matching high-waist tailored trousers in chocolate, navy or ivory is my favorite version. Matching shades across fabrics is the hard part; silk and wool dye differently, so check them together in daylight. A tonal belt, pointed heels and a duster in the same hue finish it.
11. Wrap Top And Skinny Jeans Outfit With Ankle Boots

A wrap top crosses over at the waist and opens into a V, so it marks the narrowest part of the torso without tucking. Soft knit or silky fabric with three-quarter sleeves balances a fuller upper arm. Watch the depth: a wrap that's too low means a camisole underneath all day. Dark high-rise skinny jeans and block-heel ankle boots that end just above the ankle bone keep the leg line. A long pendant and hobo bag make it a weekend outfit.
12. Pencil Skirt And Silk Blouse With Tailored Blazer

For formal office days, a pencil skirt is still a curvy woman's ally, provided the waistband is contoured with a bit of stretch so it lies flat at the small of the back. Knee length is the hem I trust most. A silk or satin blouse drapes better than stiff poplin, which pulls across the bust. Tuck it fully. A blazer with a nipped waist and one button adds structure without bulk. Nude pointed pumps and a leather tote suit client meetings or interviews.
13. A-Line Mini Dress Outfit With Platform Heels

An A-line mini suits more ages than people expect. The bodice fits the ribs and bust, the skirt opens from the waist, and you get the coveted hourglass profile. The shorter hem shows the legs, which helps balance a long torso. Shaping seams or a smocked back let it fit without pulling. Check how it moves before you buy: a mini over full hips rides up when you walk. Platform heels, a cropped denim jacket and a mini crossbody suit daytime.
14. Satin Slip Dress Outfit With Strappy Heels And Clutch

Satin cut on the bias drapes around curves instead of squeezing them, which is why a slip dress can work on a fuller figure. It does show everything underneath, so I fit the slip over smooth, flat underwear or a light slip and check it in strong light. Midi length with a cowl neck softens the bust, and adjustable straps let you set the waist height. Metallic or nude strappy sandals and a small clutch make it right for an evening wedding or anniversary dinner.
15. Ribbed Sweater Dress And Knee-High Boots Outfit

Winter layers can bury your shape, but a ribbed sweater dress keeps it visible. Mid-weight rib with stretch skims the waist and hip without bulk. Thin rib knit shows every line, so look for something thick enough to hold its form. Knee-high boots in suede or leather slide under the hem and keep the leg continuous. A belted wool coat or one with defined shoulders keeps the outline once you're outside, and charcoal, burgundy or forest green keep it long.
16. Flowy Floral Maxi Dress Outfit With Espadrilles

A loose maxi seems wrong for curves until you look at the cut. Empire waistlines and wrap bodices pull in just under the bust, often the narrowest point, then let the skirt fall over the middle and hips. A side slit adds movement and keeps the length from swamping a petite frame. Espadrille wedges are cooler than closed shoes in heat. A straw hat, layered gold necklaces and a woven tote suit brunch or a beach dinner.
17. High-Waisted Leggings And Tunic Outfit With Sneakers

Leggings need proportion to look like an outfit. A wide high waistband smooths and defines the middle, and a tunic that hits mid-thigh covers the hip without clinging. I look at leggings in daylight while bending over; thin ones go see-through at the seat, and that's the most common problem I see. A curved or split tunic hem keeps it from looking boxy. Clean white leather sneakers and an oversized tote suit travel days and errands.
18. Two-Piece Crop Top And Maxi Skirt Outfit

A matching set looks considered, and you can fit each half separately, which helps if your top and bottom sizes differ. The crop top ends at or just above the natural waist; the maxi skirt sits high and falls to the floor. Cotton poplin, linen blend or ribbed knit holds its shape better than jersey. Check the skirt length with your shoes on, because a maxi that drags catches on every step. Heeled sandals and statement earrings suit summer parties.
19. Fitted Turtleneck And Midi Skirt Outfit

Clean lines make this one of my cold-weather standbys. A fine-gauge rib turtleneck follows the torso, and a full tuck into a midi skirt marks the waist. Fine gauge matters: chunky knits add bulk at the tuck and erase the waist entirely. A bias satin skirt dresses it up; an A-line knit keeps it casual. The midi grazes the calf, a hem that suits most curvy figures. Pointed flats or low block heels and a structured crossbody.
20. Belted Wide-Leg Jumpsuit Outfit With Platform Heels

A wide-leg jumpsuit with a belt gets its own spot because of how much drama it gives for one piece. The leg balances fuller hips, and a self belt or leather belt at the natural waist marks the hourglass. Puff or structured cap sleeves add width up top, which helps if your hips are wider than your shoulders. Platform heels carry the volume and keep the hem off the floor. A small shoulder bag and a bold lip are enough for a birthday dinner.
21. Structured Blazer Dress Outfit With Pumps

A blazer dress gives you tailoring and a dress in one piece. Darts nip in the waist, and a belt or double-breasted layout draws the eye inward. The skirt should skim the hip; if the vents pull open when you stand, it's too tight there. I check the shoulder seam first, because it's the hardest thing to alter on a blazer dress. Pointed pumps and minimal jewelry suit a boardroom or a cocktail reception.
22. V-Neck T-Shirt Dress Outfit With White Sneakers

A T-shirt dress is easy to wear, but a straight one hangs like a sack on a curvy figure. Look for shaping: a slight A-line, a drawstring waist or side darts. The V-neck opens the bust area and lengthens the upper body. Cotton jersey with some weight hangs better than thin slub jersey, which clings over the hips. White sneakers keep it casual, and a denim jacket tied at the waist adds definition for a market morning.
23. High-Waisted Shorts And Crop Top Outfit

Shorts and a crop top need careful proportion. High-waisted shorts with a tailored fit through the hip mark the waist and still cover enough. A crop that ends just above the waistband shows only a sliver of skin. Check the leg opening: shorts cut too narrow ride up between the thighs, so a slightly wider leg or longer inseam is kinder on full thighs. Linen or cotton breathe in heat. Flat leather sandals or espadrilles and a straw bag suit a barbecue.
24. High-Waisted Flare Jeans And Fitted Tank Outfit

Flare jeans suit curvy figures well: the high waist defines the middle, the fit through the hip shows shape, and the flare from the knee balances wider hips. I hem flares with the shoes I'll wear most, leaving about half an inch off the floor. A ribbed cotton or modal tank tucks in smoothly. A wide leather belt adds waist emphasis, and heeled clogs or platforms keep the hem off the ground. A suede shoulder bag and gold chains suit the 1970s mood.
25. Strapless Jumpsuit Outfit With Metallic Heels

A strapless jumpsuit frames the upper body with a horizontal line across the shoulders and keeps the focus on your face. A smocked or boned bodice is what keeps it up; on a full bust I'd only wear the boned kind and pair it with a fitted strapless bra. An elastic band or belt defines the waist. Choose a fabric with weight so the legs drape. Metallic heels catch light, and an updo with drop earrings makes it ready for a rooftop party or New Year's Eve.
Underpinnings Change How Every Outfit Here Hangs
Before blaming a dress, I look at the bra. A band that rides up drops the bust, which shortens the space between bust and waist and makes every waist seam sit wrong. A well-fitted band sits level all the way round and does most of the support; you should fit two fingers under it, no more.
For close-fitting pieces like the bodycon, satin slip and ribbed sweater dress, smooth underwear without heavy seams matters more than shapewear. Light smoothing shorts help with chafing under maxi and midi skirts in summer, and that's a comfort issue more than a looks one. Strapless and off-shoulder styles need a strapless bra with a wide band and silicone grip, fitted a band size snugger than usual.
Stretch Fabrics Lose Their Shape Faster Than You'd Think
Many pieces in this list rely on stretch: the bodycon, the leggings, stretch denim, ribbed knits. Elastane weakens with heat, so these garments sag at the seat and knees sooner if they go through a hot dryer. I wash them cold, inside out, and dry them flat or hanging. A pull test in the store helps too. Stretch a section of fabric and let go; if it springs straight back, it has good recovery. If it stays a little stretched, it will bag by the end of the day.
Start With the Waistband That Gapes
None of these outfits ask your body to become a different shape. They all start with fit: wrap lines, cinched waists, ruching, high rises and V-necks follow the body rather than forcing it. Start with the piece in your closet that fits worst at the waist and ask a tailor about it. Then try one of the silhouettes here that matches your shape, in a fabric heavy enough to hang well. Once you know which cuts suit you, shopping gets far quicker.
