Looking slimmer in clothes isn't about hiding. It comes down to where the eye travels: up and down reads long and lean, side to side reads wide. When I dress a client who wants a leaner line, I lean on the same handful of tools every time: one color head to toe, a V-neck, a waist that sits where it should, vertical lines and fabric with enough weight to skim rather than cling. The 25 outfits below each use one or more of them. If you're curvy, petite, or somewhere in between, I've noted where each look works best and where it doesn't.

Sizing Up Slims More Than Squeezing In
The most common mistake I see is buying a size smaller in the hope it'll look slimmer. It does the opposite. Fabric under tension pulls into horizontal creases, buttons gape, and every edge of underwear shows. A garment that skims, with a little ease at the bust, stomach and hips, reads leaner.
- Pulling lines that point toward the bust, hips or thighs mean the garment is too tight there.
- Pockets that flare open on trousers and skirts are a sign to size up.
- A waistband that leaves a mark after an hour is too small and will create a bulge above it.
- Shoulder seams that land past your shoulder bone mean the top is too big and will add width.
Buy for your largest measurement and have the smaller areas taken in. Taking in a waist or shortening a hem is routine tailoring; letting out a seam often isn't possible at all.
Try everything on sitting down as well as standing. A skirt that looks smooth in the mirror can ride up and crease across the lap the moment you sit, and that's the view people see across a table.
1. All Black Monochrome Outfit

All black slims because the eye can't find a break to stop at. A black V-neck bodysuit tucked into high-waisted black straight-leg trousers is the base, and a single-breasted black blazer worn open adds two vertical edges down the torso. Pointed black pumps carry the line to the floor. The mistake I see most is all-black in one flat fabric, which turns into a shapeless block. Mix a ribbed knit with smooth suiting and add small gold hoops to keep it alive.
2. Navy Monochrome Outfit

Navy works the same way as black but looks softer in daylight, and it's kinder to fair skin. A navy silk V-neck blouse tucked into navy wide-leg trousers that just skim the floor makes one long column that helps you appear taller and narrower. Match navies carefully; two slightly different navies next to each other can look like a mistake. Navy mules and a navy tote finish it, and a fine silver pendant brings the eye up to your face.
3. Wrap Dress with Nude Heels Outfit

A wrap dress does three slimming jobs at once: the V-neck lengthens the upper body, the tie marks the waist, and the diagonal wrap line pulls the eye inward. Burgundy or charcoal in a midi length with three-quarter sleeves is the version I reach for most. The fabric decides whether it works. Heavy jersey or crepe skims; thin jersey clings to every line underneath. Nude pointed pumps close to your skin tone lengthen the legs, and a slim clutch keeps it tidy.
4. V-Neck Blouse with High-Waisted Trousers Outfit

A V-neck blouse tucked into high-waisted tailored trousers is the formula I'd hand anyone who wants one reliable work outfit. Dark olive or charcoal up top, black trousers sitting at the natural waist, which lifts the waistline and lengthens the leg. The trousers must close without pulling across the front; if the pockets flare open, size up and have the waist taken in. A slim belt, black pointed loafers and a structured bag complete it.
5. Dark Wash Jeans with Structured Blazer Outfit

Dark indigo jeans are slimming because deep color hides shadows and creases. I'd pick high-rise straight-leg jeans with little or no fading; whiskering and light patches on the thigh draw attention exactly where most people don't want it. A white crewneck tee tucked in, plus a black blazer that nips slightly at the waist, gives structure. Left open, the blazer frames the torso. Black pointed ankle boots and a crossbody take it from brunch to a smart-casual office.
6. Vertical Stripe Pants with Solid Black Top Outfit

Vertical stripes pull the eye up and down, but stripe width matters. Narrow, close stripes lengthen; very wide stripes start to read as blocks and lose the effect. High-waisted black-and-white striped wide-leg trousers with a fitted black top tucked in is a strong evening look. Black pointed heeled sandals carry the leg line further, and silver drop earrings repeat the vertical. Keep everything else plain, with a small black clutch.
7. Empire Waist Maxi Dress with Sandals Outfit

An empire waist dress has its seam just under the bust, so the fabric falls past the stomach and hips without touching them. It's the shape I suggest to clients who carry weight in the middle. A dark floral in chiffon or jersey moves well. On a very full bust, the seam can ride up and make the dress look like maternity wear, so check it sits right under the bust line. Flat sandals and a cropped denim jacket suit outdoor weddings and summer brunches.
8. A-Line Dress with Pointed Toe Flats Outfit

The A-line is the shape I'd call the safest bet for most bodies: fitted through the bodice, flaring gradually from the waist so it skims the hips and thighs. A knee-length charcoal dress with short sleeves and a small V-neck needs a fabric with some body, like a cotton twill or a heavier crepe, or the skirt collapses. Pointed black patent flats lengthen the foot even without a heel. A thin belt and a top-handle bag take it from desk to dinner.
9. Fit and Flare Dress with Block Heels Outfit

A fit and flare differs from an A-line in how sharply the skirt flares, and that fuller skirt hides the lower stomach and hips very well. Deep teal or plum with a V-neck and elbow sleeves has a vintage feel. Elbow sleeves are kinder than cap sleeves to fuller arms, because they end past the widest point. Black suede block heels add height you can stand in all evening. A small black clutch and pearl studs finish it.
10. High-Waisted Wide Leg Pants with Fitted Bodysuit Outfit

High-waisted wide-leg trousers mark the waist and fall in a straight line past the hip, so wider hips simply disappear into the line of the leg. Black crepe drapes best. A fitted scoop-neck bodysuit tucks in without bunching. The hem matters more here than anywhere: wide legs should almost touch the floor in the shoes you'll wear, or they look cropped and shorten you. Pointed heeled mules, a slim belt and layered gold chains finish it.
11. Belted Shirt Dress with Knee Boots Outfit

A shirt dress has a button placket running down the center, which is a built-in vertical line. Choose a knee-length dark olive or black in a crisp cotton blend; soft fabric won't hold the shape. Belt it at the narrowest part of the waist and roll the sleeves to below the elbow. Snug black suede knee boots meet the hem and make the leg one long line. Check the placket doesn't gape at the bust when you sit. A black crossbody keeps it casual.
12. Black Jumpsuit with Heels and Gold Accessories Outfit

A black jumpsuit gives one uninterrupted column of dark color, and a V-neck or surplice neckline plus a tie or sewn-in belt adds waist definition. Before buying, sit down and reach overhead in the fitting room; a short torso length pulls at both ends. Wide or straight legs both work, but the hem should almost reach the floor in heels. Black strappy sandals, a gold clutch and statement gold earrings suit weddings and cocktail parties.
13. Longline Blazer with Slim Pants Outfit

A longline blazer worn open over a dark base adds two long vertical edges that run past the hip. It needs to end at mid-thigh; a blazer that stops at the widest part of the hip draws a line right across it. Under it, a black silk camisole and slim black ankle trousers keep the column dark. Pointed pumps, a fine silver chain and a structured bag make it right for the office. Petite women should look at a shorter longline, ending at the upper thigh, so the legs don't shrink.
14. Ruched Midi Dress with Strappy Heels Outfit

Ruching gathers fabric into soft folds, and those folds hide what's underneath far better than a smooth knit, while still hugging your curves in all the right places. An emerald or plum midi with side or center ruching and a V-neck is a strong evening choice. Ruched jersey can shift as you move, so give it a tug at the hip before you walk in. Nude strappy heels, an envelope clutch and small studs are all it needs.
15. Tunic Top with Faux Leather Leggings Outfit

A long tunic with an asymmetric hem creates a diagonal line that keeps the eye moving downward. Black or charcoal in a soft draping fabric should fall past the hip, ideally to the upper thigh. Underneath, high-waisted faux leather leggings with a firm, smoothing fit give a sleek leg. Faux leather can feel warm indoors, so I'd save it for cool days. Pointed ankle boots, a long pendant and a slouchy tote make it a weekend outfit.
16. Camel Monochrome Outfit

Monochrome doesn't have to be black. A camel cashmere V-neck tucked into high-waisted camel wide-leg trousers makes a warm, tonal column, and a camel trench worn over the shoulders adds vertical framing at the sides. Keep the camels close in shade; a big jump in tone breaks the line. Camel suits warm and olive skin especially well. Nude pumps, a camel bag and a gold watch finish it for autumn and winter.
17. Open Cardigan with V-Neck Tank and Dark Jeans Outfit

A long open cardigan draws two vertical lines down either side of the body, and a knee-length fine-gauge knit drapes without bulk. Chunky knits add width, which defeats the purpose. A white V-neck tank tucked into high-rise dark skinny or straight jeans shows a narrow column down the middle. Black pointed flats, a long silver pendant and a leather tote make it easy for casual Fridays or brunch.
18. Peplum Top with Dark Pencil Skirt Outfit

A peplum marks the waist and flares just enough to skim the stomach. I'd choose a black structured peplum top with a V-neck, since a soft, floppy peplum adds bulk instead of shape. The flare has to start exactly at the natural waist; a lower peplum widens the hips. A high-waisted black pencil skirt below the knee keeps the dark column going. Pointed pumps, a thin patent belt and pearl studs suit the office.
19. Tailored Blazer with White Tee and Dark Jeans Outfit

A well-cut black blazer gives shoulder definition and a nipped waist, so it does most of the slimming work on its own. It should button without pulling into an X across the front; if it does, go up a size. Over a white tee tucked into high-rise dark straight-leg jeans, it's the weekend outfit I suggest most often. Black pointed ankle boots and a black belt unify it, and a crossbody keeps the hands free.
20. Pointed Toe Heels with Cropped Straight-Leg Pants Outfit

A pointed toe extends the leg past the foot, and with cropped trousers that's what stops the leg looking cut off. The crop should end just above the ankle bone; a crop at mid-calf shortens the leg however pointed the shoe. High-waisted black cropped straight-leg trousers with a tucked black tank give one dark line. Black suede or patent pointed heels, a structured blazer and a sleek clutch make it right for a dinner date.
21. Dark Pencil Skirt with V-Neck Camisole Outfit

A dark pencil skirt in stretch cotton or ponte smooths the hips and thighs, and a hem just below the knee hits the narrow part of the leg. Ponte holds its shape better than thin stretch fabrics, which crease across the lap after sitting. A sapphire or emerald V-neck camisole adds color near the face. Pointed black pumps, a fine chain and a structured bag complete it.
22. Straight-Leg Trousers with Tucked-In Blouse Outfit

Straight-leg trousers fall from the hip without adding volume or clinging, so they're the most forgiving trouser shape I know. A high-waisted charcoal or black pair with a little stretch is comfortable all day. A cream V-neck blouse tucked in brings the eye up. If tucking makes you uncomfortable, a front tuck gives the same waist definition with less fuss. Pointed loafers, a black belt and a tote make it a workday classic.
23. Longline Vest Over White Shirt and Slim Pants Outfit

A longline vest that falls to mid-thigh makes a strong vertical frame down the body without adding sleeves or bulk at the arms. Structured crepe holds its line better than knit. Over a crisp white shirt, it shows a narrow light strip down the center. Keep the shirt hem shorter than the vest, or the layers fight. Slim black trousers and pointed heels finish it, with a long pendant and small studs.
24. Color-Block Dress with Dark Side Panels Outfit

Color blocking with dark panels at the sides works like contour makeup: the darker edges recede and the lighter center comes forward, so the body reads narrower. A knee-length fitted dress with black or navy side panels and a berry or dusty blue center is the classic version. The panels need to follow the body's curves; straight panels on a curvy figure lose the effect. Black pumps, a clutch and simple studs keep the focus on the dress.
25. Light Top with Dark Bottom Outfit

Light on top and dark below pulls attention up toward the face and lets the lower half recede. It's the formula I use for clients who carry weight on the hips and thighs. An ivory, blush or soft blue V-neck blouse tucked into high-waisted black wide-leg trousers or a dark A-line midi does it. Nude pointed pumps keep the leg long. If you're fuller on top, flip the rule and wear the dark color above.
Matte, Heavy and Lined Fabrics Read Leaner
Fabric changes the result more than color does. Shiny satin and sequins catch light on every curve, so they widen. Thin jersey clings to every line beneath it. When I pick slimming pieces, I look for three qualities.
- Weight: ponte, heavy crepe and thicker jersey hang straight and smooth over the body.
- A matte surface: it absorbs light rather than bouncing it off the hips and stomach.
- Lining: a lined skirt or dress glides over tights and shapewear instead of catching on them.
Smoothing Layers Underneath
Shapewear isn't required, but a smooth layer makes fitted pieces like the pencil skirt, sheath and jumpsuit look cleaner. Light-control briefs or a slip are enough for most outfits. Very firm shapewear just moves the soft tissue to the edges, where it shows as a ridge, so I suggest comfort over compression. Bras with smooth molded cups also stop lines showing through knit tops.
Cut, Color and Fit Do the Slimming Work
A slimmer silhouette through clothing comes from a handful of habits: one color top to bottom, a V-neck, a waist at the right height, long vertical lines and fabric with enough weight to skim. None of it works if the fit is wrong. Too tight shows every line underneath; too big adds volume you don't have. Buy for your largest measurement and let a tailor take in the rest, and you'll look leaner in almost every outfit here.
