If your tops always seem to end too soon and your jeans sit low on you no matter the label, you probably have a long torso. It isn't a flaw to hide. It just changes where I place the waistline when I'm building an outfit. High-waisted bottoms, cropped jackets, empire seams and short layers do most of the balancing. I've laid out 25 full outfits below for work, weekends and evenings, and for each one I explain where the waist should land and what tends to go wrong on a longer body.

Is Your Torso Long, or Your Legs Short?
Both look similar in the mirror, but they call for slightly different fixes, so I check before I recommend anything. You only need a tape measure and a friend.
- Stand barefoot against a wall and mark your height.
- Find the crease where your leg meets your hip at the front, and measure from there to the floor. That's your leg length.
- Compare it to your height. If your leg is noticeably less than half your height, your legs are proportionally shorter and your torso longer.
- Then measure from the base of your neck to your natural waist, the narrowest point. A long torso usually shows here as a waist that sits low, with little gap between the bottom ribs and the hip bone.
If your waist sits low but your legs are a normal length, raising the waistline is usually enough. If your legs are also short, I add a second step: matching shoes to bottoms, a little heel or platform, and avoiding anything that cuts the leg at mid-calf. The outfits below cover both, and I've noted where it makes a difference.
1. Long Torso Outfit with High-Waisted Wide-Leg Trousers and Cropped Top

If I could give a long-torso client only one outfit, it would be this one. High-waisted wide-leg trousers move the visual waist up, and a cropped top that stops right at the waistband removes the stretch of midriff that usually makes the torso look longer. I look for a firm waistband that doesn't fold and a leg long enough to graze the top of the shoe. A ribbed neutral crop keeps it clean. Pointed heels peeking out at the hem, a small shoulder bag and fine gold jewelry make it a dinner outfit. Check the gap when you lift your arms; a crop that shows skin at the waist breaks the line.
2. Long Torso Wrap Dress Outfit with Heels

The tie on a wrap dress is what makes it work for a long torso, because you decide where the waist sits. I tie it an inch or so above the natural waist, which shortens the bodice and gives the legs more length. A jersey or silk-crepe midi drapes without clinging, and the V-neck adds a vertical line through the chest. Nude or tonal strappy heels, a fine pendant and a slim clutch suit a garden party or bridal shower. One thing to check: on some long-waisted women the wrap's own waist seam falls too low, so look at where the seam lands before you rely on the tie.
3. Long Torso Empire Waist Maxi Dress Outfit

Empire dresses put the seam sitting just under the bust, so the skirt starts high and the torso reads shorter. For a long torso it's one of the easiest shapes to wear. I choose a maxi with a skirt that moves and a bodice that is fitted but not tight, with a square or scoop neck. Flat strappy sandals or low block heels, a straw hat and a woven crossbody suit a beach wedding or a summer trip. If you're also short-legged, avoid very full skirts here; a gentle A-line keeps the column long instead of turning it into a tent.
4. Long Torso Outfit with Tucked-In Blouse and High-Rise Straight-Leg Jeans

Simple works well here. High-rise straight jeans that reach the belly button lift the waistline, and a tucked blouse in silk or cotton poplin shows exactly where you narrow. Both a front tuck and a full French tuck are fine; I base the choice on the blouse fabric, since thick poplin bunches if you tuck it all in. A slim belt matched to your shoes adds a crisp line. Pointed ankle boots or loafers, a structured bag and small hoops make it a good outfit for a coffee date or casual Friday. The rise is what matters most, so check the measurement on the label before you try anything on.
5. Long Torso A-Line Mini Dress Outfit with Cropped Jacket

An A-line mini flares from the waist and adds fullness to the lower half, which is where a long torso usually needs it. With most of the leg showing, the legs look longer too. I'd add a cropped denim jacket or a short blazer to set a clear waistline, plus a thin belt if the dress has no seam there. White sneakers for daytime, heeled ankle boots for evening. A crossbody bag and stud earrings are enough. If the waist seam on the dress is low, the cropped jacket matters even more, because it makes a new edge higher up.
6. Long Torso Bodysuit and Palazzo Pants Outfit

A bodysuit solves the untucking problem that long-waisted women know well, because it can't ride up out of the waistband. With high-waisted palazzo pants it gives a long, clean leg line. Square, sweetheart or bateau necklines all suit it; I'd avoid a scoop that drops too low, since it lengthens the torso again. The palazzo should sit high and fall wide. Platform heels, a long pendant and a sleek clutch work for a cocktail party. Putting a darker color on the bottom and a lighter one on top helps too. Buy bodysuits in tall or long sizes if you can, as a short body length pulls at the crotch.
7. Long Torso Jumpsuit Outfit with Defined Waist

Jumpsuits are the trickiest item on this list for a long torso, because the body length is fixed. Standard sizes often pull at the shoulders and crotch at once. I look for tall sizing, adjustable straps or an elastic back, plus a tie or belt at the waist. A V or surplice front and a wide or tapered leg are both fine. Pointed heels, statement earrings and a structured mini bag dress it up, and a cropped jacket on the shoulders breaks up the long line. If you can't raise your arms comfortably in the fitting room, it's too short in the body.
8. Long Torso Outfit with Peplum Top and High-Waisted Pencil Skirt

A peplum flares at the waist and gives the eye a clear stopping point, which creates an hourglass shape on most bodies. On a long torso I make sure the peplum starts at or above the natural waist; a peplum that starts low adds even more length to the bodice. Pair it with a high-waisted pencil skirt ending just below the knee. Pointed pumps, a slim belt if needed and a top-handle bag keep it office-ready. Pearl studs or a short necklace keep attention near the face and the waist.
9. Long Torso Monochrome Pants and Top Outfit

Matching your shoes to your trousers or skirt makes one long line from the waist to the floor, and the legs look longer with it. It's one of the quickest fixes I know. Choose high-waisted trousers, then match the shoes to them: black on black with pointed boots, or cream with nude sandals. Keep the top short or tucked so the waist stays visible. A thin bracelet or small hoops are enough. The trick only works if the bottom half is one color; a contrasting belt or shoe cuts the line in two.
10. Long Torso Outfit with Cropped Blazer and High-Waisted Tailored Trousers

A cropped blazer that ends at the waist or just above the hip is the jacket I'd buy first for a long torso. Its hem makes a clear horizontal line, so the torso looks shorter right away. Pair it with high-waisted tailored trousers in a matching or nearby shade, and tuck a fitted tank, bodysuit or fine knit underneath. Pointed flats or low block heels keep it modern, with a leather tote and simple jewelry. Watch the sleeve length, since long-waisted women often have long arms too, and cropped blazers sometimes come with short sleeves to match.
11. Long Torso Fit and Flare Midi Dress Outfit

Fit-and-flare midis pull in at the waist and flare out, which adds volume below and balances a long upper body. I check the waist seam first. If it hits below your natural waist, add a belt slightly higher to correct it. A V or sweetheart neck lengthens the neck and draws the eye up. Nude heeled sandals or slingbacks, a fine pendant and a small crossbody work for a baby shower or brunch. Florals suit spring, while solid jewel tones carry into autumn. Skip very stiff skirts, which can look costume-like.
12. Long Torso Outfit with Paperbag Waist Pants and Tucked-In Tee

Paperbag waist pants gather high on the body, and that bunched waistband acts like a wide belt across the midsection. For a long torso it's a useful visual break. Tuck in a plain tee or a light knit; a slightly loose tee contrasts nicely with the gathered waist. Roll the sleeves once, then add flat sandals or white sneakers, a woven tote and a few bracelets for weekend errands. The gathers add bulk at the tummy, so I'd skip this cut if you don't want extra fabric there.
13. Long Torso Cropped Sweater and High-Waisted Leather Pants Outfit

For cold weather, I pair a cropped sweater with high-waisted leather pants. The sweater should end at or just above the waistband so the hem and the waistband meet in one clean edge. A chunky knit gives texture, while fine cashmere looks sleeker. Black, burgundy or chocolate leather pants add structure. Pointed ankle boots, a mini crossbody and sculptural earrings finish it for dinner or a day in the city. Real leather stretches with wear, so buy pants snug; faux leather doesn't give much, so buy your true size.
14. Long Torso Outfit with High-Waisted Denim Shorts and Box Tee

High-waisted denim shorts that sit above the belly button do for summer what high-rise jeans do the rest of the year. The tee is the part people get wrong. A boxy tee that hangs past the waistband adds the length you're trying to remove, so I keep it short, half-tuck it or tie a small knot at the front. Flat sandals or low platform sneakers, a canvas tote, sunglasses and a cap or straw hat suit a picnic or a beach day. Check the inseam in the mirror too; very short shorts on a long torso can make the legs look shorter rather than longer.
15. Long Torso Belted Shirt Dress Outfit

With a shirt dress, the belt does the proportion work, so you can set the waist wherever it looks best. I'd choose a midi or knee length in cotton poplin, linen or light denim and belt it slightly above the natural waist with a medium-width belt. Roll the sleeves to the elbow and leave the top buttons open for a V. Flat sandals, espadrilles or sneakers all work, with a straw bag and gold hoops. Linen creases a lot, which suits a relaxed day but not an office meeting. A cropped cardigan works on cooler days.
16. Long Torso Outfit with Wrap Top and A-Line Midi Skirt

A wrap top works the same way as a wrap dress: the tie lets you choose where the waist sits. Paired with a high-waisted A-line midi skirt, it gives definition on top and fullness below. I tuck the wrap in or let it end exactly at the skirt waistband, never below it. Coordinated colors or soft prints both work. Heeled mules or strappy sandals, a mini bag and statement earrings suit an afternoon tea. On a long torso I tie the wrap a little higher than it was designed to sit, which keeps the bodice from looking stretched.
17. Long Torso Fitted Turtleneck and High-Waisted Flare Jeans Outfit

A fitted fine-gauge turtleneck keeps the top half smooth, and high-waisted flares add width at the hem to balance it. The jeans should fit close through the hip and kick out from the knee. Tuck the turtleneck in fully so the waistband shows. A belt in a matching or contrast shade, heeled boots that sit under the flare, a structured bag and a long pendant or silk scarf finish this seventies-style outfit. I always hem flares with the boots on, since half an inch too short loses the leg-lengthening effect.
18. Long Torso Outfit with Cropped Denim Jacket and High-Waisted Mini Skirt

If you have a long torso, a cropped denim jacket is worth owning. It ends at or above the waist and makes a clear break. Wear it over a fitted tank or tee tucked into a high-waisted mini in denim, suede or cotton twill. Ankle boots or chunky sneakers, a crossbody and a few layered necklaces keep it casual. A light-wash jacket with a white skirt suits spring, and dark denim with a black mini works at night. Avoid jackets that hit at the high hip; they split the torso at exactly the wrong place.
19. Long Torso Wide-Leg Jumpsuit Outfit with Statement Belt

A wide-leg jumpsuit can work on a long torso if you find enough body length. Tall sizes and adjustable straps are the two things I look for first. The wide leg adds volume below, and a strong belt at the waist breaks up the long bodice. A dark solid jumpsuit with a contrasting belt puts the focus right at the waistline. Pointed heels, a sleek clutch and chandelier earrings make it an evening outfit. For daytime, wear flat sandals with a denim jacket tied at the waist. If the crotch pulls when you sit, size up in length rather than width.
20. Long Torso Outfit with V-Neck Bodysuit and High-Waisted Midi Skirt

A deep V-neck bodysuit draws a line down the center of the body and stays tucked all day. With a high-waisted midi skirt, satin for evening or poplin for daytime, the outfit has one clean waistline. A side slit adds movement and shows some leg. Heeled sandals, a layered necklace that follows the V and a small shoulder bag keep it light. The deep neckline and the high waist together flatter your proportions. I'd only skip it if you dislike low necklines, in which case a square neck bodysuit does the same job.
21. Long Torso High-Waisted Tailored Shorts and Blouse Outfit

In hot weather, high-rise tailored shorts keep the waist up the way trousers do. Linen, cotton twill or light suiting with a crisp waistband and a relaxed leg looks polished. Tuck in a silky blouse or a sleeveless button-down and add a thin leather belt. Flat sandals or low block heels, a structured tote and sunglasses finish it. I check two things on these: that the rise really reaches the natural waist, and that the top stays tucked when you sit. That's enough for a relaxed office or a shopping trip.
22. Long Torso Column Dress Outfit with Nude Heels

Column dresses have no waist seam, so on a long torso the accessories have to set the proportions. I pick a knee or midi length in one solid color and add nude heels close to your skin tone to extend the leg. A statement necklace or a scarf at the neck pulls attention up. A blazer worn over the shoulders adds a horizontal line that shortens the torso. It's a good minimal outfit for a cocktail party or gallery evening. If the dress is knit and clings, I'd skip it, since a clingy column shows every inch of torso length.
23. Long Torso Outfit with Belted Trench Coat and High-Waisted Straight Jeans

A belted trench is useful on a long torso because you can belt it wherever the waist should be, not where the coat's loops are. If the loops sit too low, I tie the belt above them. Wear it open or closed over high-waisted straight jeans and a fitted knit or tee. Ankle boots or loafers, a leather crossbody and a silk scarf on the neck or bag handle make it work for spring and autumn commutes. It's both outerwear and a quick way to fix proportions over anything underneath.
24. Long Torso Two-Piece Matching Set Outfit

A matching set in one fabric and color works on a long torso when the top is cropped or ends at the waist and the bottom is high-waisted. Wide-leg pants or an A-line skirt are both good. Linen suits summer, a knit set works in cooler months, and satin is for evening. I keep accessories simple: plain heels, fine jewelry and a small bag. Because the color is continuous, the outfit looks long and tidy, and the cropped top keeps the torso from stretching. Watch out for sets where the top is a standard length; it'll hang past the waistband on you.
25. Long Torso Off-Shoulder Top and High-Waisted Wide-Leg Jeans Outfit

An off-shoulder neckline shows the collarbone and makes a horizontal line high on the body, which draws the eye up and away from torso length. Pair it with high-waisted wide-leg jeans that sit at the natural waist. Tuck the top in or pick a cropped version. Wedges or platform sandals add height, and earrings at the jawline keep the focus up. A straw bag suits a resort trip or a summer evening. An elasticated neckline stays in place better than a loose one, so that's what I'd look for.
Reading Rise Measurements Before You Buy Jeans
Most of the outfits above depend on high-waisted bottoms, and labels like high-rise or ultra-high mean different things from brand to brand. The front rise, measured from the crotch seam to the top of the waistband, is the number that tells you where the jeans will sit.
- Measure your own body from between your legs, up the front to your navel. Jeans with a front rise close to that number will reach your navel.
- Long torsos often need a rise of about 11 inches or more to reach the natural waist, though it varies with height and shape.
- Stretch denim slips down slightly through the day, so I'd add a little to your target if the fabric is very stretchy.
- Tall and long-torso lines usually lengthen the rise as well as the inseam, which is why they often fit better even if you're not tall.
The same idea applies to skirts and trousers. If online listings give a rise or waist-to-hem measurement, compare it with your own before ordering. It saves a lot of returns. If you sew, adding length at the rise of a pants pattern is a simple change that fixes the low-sitting waistband for good.
Moving Your Waistline Up a Few Inches
A long torso doesn't need hiding. It needs the waistline placed a little higher than your body puts it. High-waisted bottoms, cropped or tucked tops, empire waist dresses and short layers do almost all of that work. Start with what you already own. Tuck a top you usually leave loose. Belt a dress above its seam. Wear your highest-rise jeans with your shortest top and look at the difference in the mirror. Small changes like these make clothes fit a longer body far better than any single new purchase.
