If I could pack only one extra piece for a beach trip, it would be a linen shirt. It goes over a swimsuit at the beach, knots at the waist for an evening walk, and layers over a tank and jeans for the market the next morning. Linen dries fast, breathes better than cotton in humid heat, and looks better slightly creased than most fabrics look pressed. Below are 25 ways I'd wear one, from straight off the sand to dinner, with notes on which cut and color suit which job.

How Much Sun a Linen Shirt Really Blocks
People often throw on a linen shirt as sun protection, and it helps, but less than they assume. Linen is a loose, breathable weave, and that airflow is exactly what lets some UV through. When I pack for a beach trip, I think about the shirt and the sunscreen as a team, not a swap.
- Color matters. Darker and more saturated colors absorb more UV than white or pale pastels, so an olive or navy shirt protects more than a white one of the same weight.
- Weave matters more. Hold the shirt up to the light; if you can see clear points of light through it, sun gets through too. Denser, mid-weight linen blocks noticeably more.
- Wet linen blocks less. A shirt soaked from swimming lets more UV through, as well as turning see-through.
- Shirts sold with a UPF rating have been tested. Plain fashion linen usually hasn't, so keep sunscreen on your shoulders and back underneath.
That's why I usually pack two shirts for a beach week: a white one for evenings and lunches, and a darker, denser one for long hours on the sand or a boat, where the sun comes off the water as well as from above.
1. White Linen Shirt With Denim Shorts

The starting point: a white linen shirt left open over a bikini top and light-wash denim shorts. Roll the sleeves twice so they stay out of your way. Flat tan leather sandals, a canvas tote and black oval sunglasses take it from coffee to the boardwalk. Denim gives the soft linen something firm to sit against. One caution: thin white linen is close to sheer when wet, so I keep this shirt for dry layering rather than swimming in it.
2. Oversized Linen Shirt Over A Black One-Piece

An oversized white or oatmeal shirt over a black one-piece is my default poolside outfit. Button the top two buttons when you walk to the bar for a bit more coverage. Black pool slides, a woven tote, a wide straw hat and slim sunglasses finish it. The fitted swimsuit anchors the volume of the shirt, so it looks deliberate rather than borrowed. An oversized shirt folds flat and weighs very little, which is why I pack it even on carry-on trips.
3. Striped Linen Shirt With White Tailored Shorts

A blue-and-white striped linen shirt, fully buttoned and half-tucked into white tailored shorts, turns a cover-up into a lunch outfit. Tan espadrille flats, a rattan crossbody and small gold hoops are enough for a seaside restaurant. Vertical stripes lengthen the torso. The half-tuck matters: tuck the front panel only, roughly in line with your hip bones, so the back stays loose and the waist still shows.
4. Linen Shirt Dress As A Beach Cover-Up

A knee-length linen shirtdress in beige or soft white is the quickest piece in the suitcase. Wear it open over a bikini from the sand to the snack bar, or button it halfway with a thin leather belt to make it a real outfit. Woven flat sandals, a raffia hobo, tortoiseshell sunglasses and a loose low bun finish it. Choose one with a deep enough side seam pocket for a phone and key; that small detail makes a cover-up much easier to live in.
5. Black Linen Shirt With Matching Linen Shorts

Black linen shirt and matching shorts over a black bandeau or triangle top is the dressier beach outfit. Platform slides add a little height, with dark oval sunglasses and a woven black clutch. Linen's texture keeps all-black from looking heavy. Do know that black absorbs heat, so in full midday sun it's warmer than white; I save this one for late afternoon and early evening drinks.
6. Neutral Linen Shirt With Linen Trousers

A sand linen shirt worn open over a white tank, with wide-leg beige linen trousers, is my standard resort breakfast outfit. The tonal palette lengthens the frame, and the fitted tank balances the wide trousers. Flat leather sandals, a long pendant, a canvas or leather tote and oversized sunglasses finish it. Loose linen layers cover the skin from the sun while letting air move, which is why they feel cooler than a single tight tee.
7. Linen Shirt Tied At The Waist With A Maxi Skirt

Tie a pastel or white linen shirt in a knot at the natural waist over a fluid neutral maxi skirt. Underneath, a triangle bikini top or fitted cami keeps it smooth. Flat strappy sandals and a beaded shell necklace bring the coast in without going costume, with a slouchy straw tote and round sunglasses. Knot the shirt at the narrowest point of your waist; tied lower, it adds bulk over the hip and fights the skirt's drape.
8. Cropped Linen Shirt With High-Waist Wide-Leg Pants

A boxy cropped shirt in butter yellow or sage sits right at the waistband of high-waist cream wide-leg trousers, so there's nothing to tuck. Button it with the collar open, add tan mules, a small structured tote, a thin gold chain bracelet and tortoiseshell sunglasses. It shows a sliver of midriff when you move. Cropped shirts only work with a genuinely high waist; with a mid-rise, the gap gets wider than most people want at a resort lunch.
9. Linen Shirt With Bike Shorts

An oversized chambray-blue linen shirt over a white crop top and matte black bike shorts is the sporty version. Crew socks with retro sneakers and a nylon belt bag worn crossbody make it a city-walking outfit, with silver hoops and a slick ponytail. The shirt adds airflow and covers your shoulders on a long walk in the sun, while the bike shorts stop chafing. I'd only wear this on hot, dry days; bike shorts trap heat in humid weather.
10. Linen Shirt With Flowy Palazzo Pants

A soft white linen shirt open over a white tank, with wide rayon or crepe palazzo pants, makes a long, flowing line that suits both the beach path and a resort lobby. Metallic strappy sandals and a beaded clutch take it to dinner, with a layered pendant and round sunglasses for a bit of 1970s spirit. The structured shirt keeps the floaty pants from looking like loungewear. Hem palazzos to just above the floor in your sandals, or they sweep up sand.
11. Linen Shirt Layered Over A Sarong

Drape a white linen shirt over your shoulders, open, above a bright printed sarong tied at the hip over a bandeau or triangle bikini. Metallic flat sandals, a shell choker, a big straw tote and round tortoiseshell sunglasses finish it. Leave the shirt fully open so the print is the focus. A sarong ties tighter and stays put better if you knot it on the side of the hip rather than at the front.
12. Linen Shirt Over A Midi Slip Dress

A collarless linen shirt in ivory or clay over a silky midi slip dress is one of my favorite evening layers. The matte linen against the soft sheen of the slip balances casual and dressed-up. Flat strappy sandals, a small leather shoulder bag, a gold chain and small hoops are all it needs. It's a good choice for a casual summer wedding when you want your arms covered without a jacket, and the collarless neck sits more neatly over thin straps than a pointed collar does.
13. Linen Shirt Worn Off-The-Shoulder Over A One-Piece Swimsuit

Slide an oversized shirt off one shoulder over a sculptural cutout one-piece swimsuit. Woven flat sandals, a wide leather cuff, big black sunglasses, a basket bag and a low bun finish it. It shows skin while still covering most of your back and arms from the sun. In practice, a shirt only stays off the shoulder if it's a size or two up and you undo the top three buttons; otherwise you spend the afternoon pulling it back down.
14. Matching Linen Shirt And Trouser Set

A linen matching set in terracotta, sage or oatmeal, worn with the shirt open over a tonal cami or bikini top, is the easiest outfit you can pack. Flat leather sandals, a woven or canvas tote, a gold chain and wayfarer sunglasses finish it. The set looks polished together, and each piece also works on its own with other things in your bag, which is why I build most beach capsules around one.
15. Linen Shirt With High-Waist Denim Cutoffs And Sneakers

A relaxed white or striped linen shirt open over a white ribbed tank and high-waist denim cutoffs is the all-day boardwalk outfit. White leather sneakers, a canvas backpack, a baseball cap and slim sunglasses keep it casual. The longer shirt adds texture and covers your shoulders, which matters more than people think after a few hours outside. It goes from the morning market to an afternoon exploring a coastal town without changing.
16. Linen Shirt With White Straight-Leg Jeans

A sage or sky-blue linen shirt buttoned and front-tucked into white straight-leg jeans is a clean daytime look. Nude block-heel sandals, a structured straw bag and pearl studs make it smart enough for a casual office or a baby shower. The colored shirt softens the white denim. Linen tucked into jeans can bunch at the back, so I prefer a shirt with a curved hem that's shorter at the sides; it sits flatter.
17. Linen Shirt With A Bodycon Midi Dress

An open oatmeal linen shirt over a fitted ribbed midi dress in black or chocolate keeps the dress's long line and adds texture over it. Low-heel strappy sandals, a sleek black clutch and layered gold chains make it a summer dinner or gallery outfit. The shirt covers the arms without adding warmth. Ribbed bodycon dresses show every seam underneath, so smooth, no-line underwear helps more here than with anything else on this list.
18. Linen Shirt With Cargo Shorts And Hiking Sandals

An oversized khaki or olive linen shirt open over a plain bikini top and cargo shorts is my outdoorsy pick. Velcro hiking sandals and a nylon crossbody make it truly practical for a beach hike, a cliff walk or tide pools, with a cap and sporty sunglasses. Button the shirt up when the wind picks up or the sun gets strong. Darker earthy linen also hides sand and scrapes better than white on rocky trails.
19. Linen Shirt With A Wrap Skirt And Wedge Sandals

A white or blush linen shirt over a bandeau, with a printed wrap skirt tied at the hip, has movement and a holiday mood. Cork wedges add height and stay steadier than heels on boardwalks and sandy paths. A straw crossbody and stacked thin gold bangles finish it. Tuck only the front of the shirt into the skirt's waistband. Wrap skirts can blow open in sea wind, so I check the overlap is generous before buying one for the beach.
20. Linen Shirt With Linen-Blend Drawstring Pants

My travel-day uniform: an oversized beige or cream linen shirt open over a black tank, with sand drawstring pants in a linen blend. Soft slides and a large leather tote make getting through an airport or a ferry terminal easy, and a thin pashmina helps on cold flights. A linen blend creases less than pure linen when you sit for hours, so you arrive looking relaxed rather than crumpled. Everything here washes in a hotel sink and dries overnight.
21. Linen Shirt Over A Bandeau Bikini And Linen Shorts

A white linen shirt and matching shorts worn open over a black or brightly colored bandeau is the true grab-and-go outfit. Flat leather sandals, a structured basket tote and a silk scarf in your hair add a French touch. The matching set lengthens the body, and the bikini or scarf color brings attention to your face. White linen shorts can show what's under them in bright sun, so I'd pair them with a bikini bottom close to your skin tone or a darker color.
22. Linen Shirt With A Halter-Neck One-Piece And Culottes

A creamy linen shirt open over a bright halter one-piece and wide cropped culottes is the most fashion-led outfit here. Flat mules, a micro bag and geometric gold earrings finish it. The halter draws the eye up, the culottes add volume below, and the shirt links the two. Culottes end mid-calf, which visually shortens the leg, so I like a flat with a pointed toe or a low block heel to balance that out.
23. Linen Shirt Knotted Over A Tiered Maxi Dress

Knot a pastel linen shirt, such as lavender, butter yellow or dusty rose, at the front waist over a tiered white or cream maxi. The knot gives the dress a waist and keeps the tiers from looking shapeless. Beaded flat sandals, a woven clutch, a fine anklet and layered bracelets add a bohemian note for a sunset dinner. Tiered maxis are long; check that the hem clears your sandals by a finger's width so you don't step on it on stairs.
24. Linen Shirt With Swim Shorts And A Rash Guard

For active days, wear an oversized white linen shirt with bright accents open over a long-sleeve rash guard and quick-dry swim shorts. Water sandals, a waterproof crossbody, a visor and polarized sunglasses finish it for paddleboarding, kayaking or volleyball. The shirt is for the walk to and from the water, and it comes off quickly. A rash guard already covers your arms in the water, so you don't need to swim in the linen.
25. Linen Shirt With A Pleated Skirt And Ballet Flats

A white or ecru linen shirt buttoned and loosely tucked into a knee-length pleated skirt in navy or khaki is the off-beach version. Nude ballet flats, a structured satchel, pearl studs and a slim watch make it work for a casual office, school pickup or lunch. The pleats add movement, and the linen keeps it from feeling stiff. I'd choose a mid-weight linen for this look, since a very sheer beach shirt looks out of place in an office.
Salt Water, Sand and Sunscreen Stains on Linen
Linen holds up well at the beach, but a week of salt and sunscreen leaves marks if you ignore them. My routine on any coastal trip is simple, and it works in a hotel sink.
- Rinse the shirt in fresh water the same day. Salt dries into stiff white lines and weakens fibers over time.
- Watch for orange or yellow marks at the collar and shoulders. Some sunscreen ingredients react with minerals in water and leave rust-colored stains; treat them before washing and skip chlorine bleach, which can set them.
- Shake out sand before rinsing. Grains caught in the seams wear holes in the stitching.
- Dry it in the shade on a hanger. Strong sun yellows white linen and fades colors faster than you'd expect.
Don't worry about ironing on holiday. Linen softens with every wash, and hanging it in a steamy bathroom while you shower relaxes most creases. A little texture is exactly how linen is meant to look.
One Linen Shirt, Every Day of the Trip
A linen shirt is the hardest-working thing in a summer suitcase. Open over a swimsuit, knotted over a maxi or tucked into trousers for lunch, it changes formality with how you wear it. If you're buying just one, I'd pick an oversized white or oatmeal shirt in a mid-weight linen, long enough to cover your hips, with buttons all the way down. Add a striped one and a darker one if you have space. Wear them all week, rinse them at night, and they'll be dry and ready by morning.
