Grunge started as cold-weather clothing: flannel, heavy denim, boots, layers. That's why people assume it doesn't survive a heat wave. It does, as long as you keep the attitude and change the weight. Ripped denim, band tees and combat boots can feel right in 80-degree weather once the flannel is thin, the denim is cut off and the layers are mesh rather than wool. Below are 30 summer grunge outfits for festivals, coffee with friends and ordinary hot days: cropped tees, distressed shorts, slip dresses with hardware and plenty of fishnet. Most can be put together from a thrift store and what's already in your closet.

Thrifting Band Tees, Flannels and Denim for Hot Weather
Grunge grew out of secondhand clothes, and thrift stores are still the best place to build it. A thrifted piece already has the softness and fade that new clothes try to fake. In summer, though, I shop with heat in mind, and I check four things before anything goes in my basket.
- Band tees: look for thin, soft cotton. A cracked print is good; yellow underarm stains usually won't wash out, so pass on those.
- Flannels: rub the fabric between your fingers. Thin, well-washed cotton flannel works in summer. Wool or thick brushed flannel stays in the closet until fall.
- Denim: old rigid jeans make the best cutoffs because the fabric frays evenly. Stretch denim curls and rolls at a cut hem.
- Slip dresses: check the seams under the arms and the straps' attachment points, which wear out first.
Wash everything you thrift before wearing it, and wash dark band tees inside out in cold water so the print keeps the fade you bought it for rather than flaking further.
1. Oversized Flannel with Ripped Denim Shorts

An oversized plaid flannel open over a band tee is the closest thing grunge has to a uniform. In summer, the flannel has to be thin; brushed cotton that's been washed a hundred times is ideal, and a thrifted one usually is. Faded red and black or muted green feel right. Swap jeans for high-waisted cutoffs with frayed hems. Combat boots carry the toughness, but on a really hot day I'd switch to canvas high-tops. A black choker and a few silver rings are enough. It suits a market morning or an afternoon with friends.
2. Black Slip Dress with Combat Boots

On its own, a black slip dress looks like evening wear. Heavy combat boots pull it into grunge immediately, because the glossy fabric and scuffed leather contradict each other. For summer, choose a midi or mini in a light fabric that moves. A cropped denim jacket or a flannel tied at the waist gives it structure and covers the shoulders when the sun drops. Slip straps are thin, so check whether your bra will show and plan around it. A velvet choker, layered chains and dark sunglasses finish it for drinks at dusk or an outdoor show.
3. Graphic Tee and Fishnet Tights with Platform Sandals

Fishnet tights under cutoff shorts give you the texture of grunge without the heat of jeans, and the netting shows through the rips in the denim. An oversized graphic tee with a faded band logo hangs over the top. The real summer move is the shoe: chunky black platform sandals with wide straps give the lift and weight of a boot while your feet breathe. Fishnet against sandal straps can rub, so try them together before a long day. A studded crossbody and silver ear cuffs finish it for a festival.
4. Cropped Graphic Tank with Distressed Denim Shorts

A cropped graphic tank with distressed denim shorts is about as simple as this list gets. The tank should end right at the waistband so only a sliver of skin shows; much shorter and it reads more Y2K than grunge. A vintage band print or abstract graphic gives the outfit its center. High-waisted shorts with raw hems and real wear keep the bottom tough. Combat boots or platform sneakers, a thin choker, a chain belt and stacked rings are all you need for a concert or a backyard party.
5. Leather Jacket Over Cargo Shorts

A worn black leather jacket in summer is an evening piece, and it only works left open over something light. A fitted dark tank underneath breathes, and olive cargo shorts at mid-thigh bring the utility pockets. The fitted tank against boxy shorts keeps the proportions balanced. Scuffed white sneakers, dark sunglasses and a plain silver chain finish it. I'd wear the jacket to the bonfire and carry it the rest of the day; leather left in a hot car stiffens and can crack.
6. Tied Plaid Shirt and Frayed Denim Skirt

Tying a red and black plaid flannel at the waist turns a loose shirt into a cropped top that shows the waist. Knot the front hems together just above your navel and let the fabric fan out over a plain white or black tank. A frayed denim skirt that hits mid-calf feels a bit retro. Long denim skirts are heavier than they look, so choose a lighter weight for heat. Scuffed brown leather boots, layered chains and a worn leather crossbody finish it for a market day that runs into the evening.
7. Mesh Top Layered Over Crop Top and Cutoffs

A sheer black mesh long-sleeve worn open over a fitted black crop top is cooler than it looks, since mesh is mostly air. The crop top underneath keeps you covered. Faded light-wash cutoffs at mid-thigh lighten the bottom half, and chunky platform sandals or high-tops ground it. Mesh snags on rings and studded belts, so watch where your hands go. A studded belt, silver rings and slim sunglasses finish it for evenings that are just cool enough to want a sleeve.
8. Distressed Denim Vest Over Black Slip Dress

A distressed denim vest over a black slip dress replaces the usual jacket with something that doesn't heat you up. The vest's frayed edges and faded wash play against the smooth dark fabric, and with no sleeves anywhere, your arms stay cool. The vest should end at the hip; a longer one swallows a mini. Combat boots or chunky platform loafers anchor it, and a silver chain with a small pendant adds one focal point. I'd wear this for a gallery afternoon or a coffee run.
9. Cropped Hoodie and Flared Midi Skirt

A cropped hoodie in faded black or heather gray over a flared midi skirt in a matching neutral mixes sporty with movement. The hoodie should stop just above the waistband, so the skirt's flare begins in the right place. Fleece is warm, so this is an evening or overcast-day outfit, not a noon one. Ruffles or soft pleats on the skirt catch the breeze. Tan platform sandals add height and a 90s note. Keeping one color top to bottom makes the texture mix of fleece, light fabric and leather straps easy to wear.
10. Knotted Band Tee and Navy Tailored Shorts

Knotting a faded black band tee at the waist makes it fitted without cutting it. Pair it with navy tailored shorts that sit neatly on the hips, a cleaner alternative to ripped denim. Navy against washed black is subtle, so the tee's graphic does the talking. Dusty gray-brown leather ankle boots add the worn-in edge, though with shorts they need some slouch at the ankle or they look stiff. A canvas tote and thin chain bracelets finish it for a casual Friday or weekend errands.
11. Plaid Mini Skirt with Fishnets and Cropped Hoodie

A red and black plaid mini has been part of alternative dressing for decades. Sheer black fishnets add texture, and a cropped hoodie in faded gray or black balances the short hem with some coverage on top. Chunky combat boots or platform Mary Janes push the punk-meets-playful vibe further. Platform Mary Janes are easier in heat than boots and still heavy enough to balance a mini. A velvet choker and silver hoops finish it for an outdoor concert or late-summer festival.
12. Distressed Denim Overalls with Striped Long Sleeve

Loose ripped denim overalls over a black and white striped long-sleeve tee look straight out of the 90s. Overalls need to fit relaxed, with distressed knees and frayed hems. Check the bib length before buying: if it pulls at the shoulders when you sit, the torso is too short for you. Push the tee's sleeves to the elbow for heat. Canvas high-tops keep it comfortable, a neutral beanie works for cooler evenings, and a canvas backpack carries the rest. It's a good road trip or park outfit.
13. Oversized Band Tee Dress with Fishnets and Platform Boots

An oversized band tee can be a dress if it reaches mid-thigh, so size up two or more. A faded, cracked print looks genuinely aged rather than bought that way. Sheer fishnets underneath add texture. Knee-high or mid-calf platform boots in black leather lengthen the legs. A wide belt at the waist gives shape, though left loose it's closer to the original grunge spirit. A chunky chain and a dark lip finish it. Few pieces, big impact, and it's ready for a concert.
14. Torn Hoodie with Cargo Pants and Vans

A slightly distressed pullover hoodie in faded black or charcoal is a street-style grunge piece, best for cooler summer evenings or overcast days. Small rips and raw edges look right; big ones make it feel like a costume. Loose olive or black cargo pants add utility. Black and white Vans keep it skater-inspired. The relaxed fit is comfortable for long days, and a silver chain, beanie and crossbody are all it needs for a skate session or a low-key hangout.
15. Vintage Denim Jacket with Slashed Leggings and Crop Top

A faded vintage denim jacket over a fitted black crop top is a classic grunge foundation. The jacket should look worn, with faded patches, small frays or a few enamel pins on the collar. Slashed leggings or ripped skinny jeans go underneath, but in real heat I'd swap to cutoffs and keep the jacket for the evening. Chunky boots or high-top Converse, dark sunglasses and stacked rings finish it. If you're new to grunge, this is the easiest entry, since every piece mixes with the rest of your closet.
16. Oversized Blazer with Mesh Top and Mini Skirt

An oversized black blazer is the dressiest way into grunge. Layer it over a sheer mesh top and black bralette, so the structured shoulders meet a little skin. A black mini balances the volume on top. The blazer should be unlined or half-lined; a fully lined polyester one gets uncomfortable fast. Chunky platform loafers or lug-sole boots add 90s weight. A thin chain, silver rings and a small shoulder bag finish it for an art show or an evening event.
17. Tie-Dye Tee with Black Overalls and Platform Sneakers

A tie-dye tee under black denim overalls brings color into the grunge palette. Deep purple, navy and charcoal dyes keep it moody instead of hippie-bright. The overalls should be relaxed with rolled cuffs and some wear. Tie-dye bleeds in the first washes, so wash it alone in cold water a couple of times. Platform Converse or chunky black sneakers stop the outfit looking too young. Woven bracelets, a beaded choker and a canvas tote finish it for a festival weekend or a park day.
18. Grunge Hoodie Layered Over Pink Slip Dress

Faded black and soft pink is an unexpected pairing that works. A cropped, washed-out zip hoodie with a faded band graphic sits over a pale pink satin slip dress that falls to mid-calf. Rough cotton against glossy satin is the whole point. The zip lets you decide how much of the dress shows. Satin marks easily with sweat, so this is for a cooler evening. Bare legs, chunky black platform sandals, a thin chain and dark sunglasses finish it.
19. Tan Utility Vest Over White Tank and Studded Denim Shorts

A tan suede or canvas utility vest worn open over a white ribbed tank brings a desert-dusty twist to grunge. Canvas is the summer choice; suede marks with sweat and darkens if it rains. Light-wash cutoffs with metal studs along the pockets add the punk edge. Flat tan sandals with wide straps keep it walkable. A leather fringe bag and beaded bracelets lean into the boho-grunge crossover, and the tan, white and blue palette feels right for a boardwalk or an outdoor market.
20. Baggy Ripped Jeans with Cropped Black Tee

Light-wash baggy jeans with big rips at the knees and thighs are breathable for jeans, because the rips let air in. They should sit low on the hips and pool slightly at the ankle. Pooled hems drag on wet ground, so cuff them once if it's been raining. A cropped black tee just above the waistband keeps the top minimal, and the light-and-black contrast is clean. Worn-in combat boots or chunky sneakers, a chain belt, a thin choker and a small shoulder bag finish it.
21. Floral Graphic Tee with Frayed Denim Mini Skirt

A black tee with a dark floral or gothic botanical print carries grunge's romantic side. Tuck it loosely into a faded black denim mini with a raw hem. The rugged skirt balances the softer graphic. Platform sandals for daytime, combat boots for night. A raw hem keeps fraying with every wash, so trim long threads now and then. A studded belt, silver rings and a velvet choker tie it together for a festival or casual date.
22. Plaid Flannel Shirt Over Band Tank and Cargo Shorts

A red and black flannel worn fully open over a fitted band tank is the grunge formula most people picture. Olive cargo shorts with big pockets keep the bottom half light. The flannel's real job in summer is to come off: tie it around your waist when the afternoon heats up, and it still adds pattern to the outfit. Combat boots or high-tops and a simple chain finish it for a road trip or an outdoor event.
23. Chunky Knit Striped Sweater with Distressed Denim Shorts

A slightly oversized black and white striped sweater with distressed denim shorts plays with proportion, but be honest about the temperature. Even a light cotton knit is warm, so this one belongs to beach bonfires and rooftop nights when the air cools. The shorts should sit high with visible rips. Sheer black tights add texture, and heavy lace-up combat boots ground it. Layered silver necklaces and a dark lip finish the 90s punk feel.
24. Sheer Polka Dot Top with Leather Mini Skirt

A sheer black polka dot long-sleeve over a black bralette brings a playful pattern into grunge, and the sheer fabric keeps it edgy. A black leather mini adds texture and weight. Real leather minis are warm and don't stretch, so sit down in one before you buy. Scuffed chunky boots reinforce the rough side. Matching polka dot tights and a chain-strap bag tie the pattern through, and stacked silver rings with smudged liner finish it for a night festival.
25. Allover Lace Mini Dress with Platform Boots

A black lace mini with sheer panels and a flared skirt is the gothic-romantic version of grunge. Heavy black platform boots weigh down the delicate lace, and that contrast is what makes the outfit. Thigh-high black socks or lace-trimmed ankle socks add detail. Lace snags on velcro and rough boot hooks, so lace your boots before you put the dress on. A velvet choker with a small pendant, silver hoops and a berry lip finish it for a concert or evening event.
26. Graphic Tee with Cargo Pants and Converse

An oversized tee with a skull print or dark artwork tucked loosely into black or olive cargo pants is about as low effort as grunge gets. The pants should be relaxed and straight-legged, pooling slightly over the shoe. Lightweight ripstop cargos are cooler than heavy twill in summer. Black and white Converse high-tops ground it in skate culture. A canvas belt, a beanie and a simple chain are enough. You probably own most of this already, which makes it a good everyday option.
27. Striped Long Sleeve Under Slip Dress with Sneakers

A fitted striped long-sleeve tee under a satin slip dress makes an evening piece work in daylight. Choose a muted slip in champagne, olive or navy, and a thin, close-fitting tee so the slip drapes smoothly over it. A bulky tee bunches under satin and pulls the straps off your shoulders. Push the sleeves up to keep cool. Chunky white or black sneakers, a small crossbody and dark sunglasses finish it, and you get daytime wear out of a dress that usually waits for a night out.
28. Oversized Graphic Tee with Pleated Mini Skirt

A loose gray or faded black graphic tee over a navy pleated mini mixes slouchy and crisp. The tee should hang over the waistband rather than tuck, so the pleats start below it and swing as you walk. Strappy black platform sandals with thick soles lengthen the legs. The volume on top balances the short hem, which suits most figures. A simple chain and a studded crossbody finish it for a casual dinner or gallery hopping.
29. Black Tank Top with White Linen Shorts

A deep V-neck black tank with wide straps is the best base on this list for real heat, because the wide straps cover a regular bra and the shape drapes rather than clings. White linen shorts at mid-thigh are an unexpected bright counterpoint. Linen crinkles within an hour, and with grunge that crumpled look fits. A thick silver chain, dark sunglasses and black flat sandals or chunky loafers finish a high-contrast look with no layers at all.
30. Patched Denim Jacket with Band Tee and Ripped Jeans

A denim jacket covered in band patches, enamel pins and small studs is a personal statement, and putting it together yourself is part of the point. Iron-on patches peel after a few washes, so I'd stitch around the edges as well. Layer the jacket over a faded band tee tucked into ripped black skinny jeans, distressed at the knees and thighs, with chunky combat boots. A chain belt and a few silver rings finish it. It works for concerts and any day you want your taste on show.
Cutting and Distressing Your Own Denim Shorts
Almost half of these outfits use cutoffs, and making your own from old jeans gives you exactly the length and wear you want. It takes about half an hour, and I'd always practice on the oldest pair first.
Mark the Length Long
Put the jeans on and mark about two inches below where you want the hem to land. The fabric frays and shrinks upward in the wash, so the first cut should always be longer than you think. Cut the back slightly longer than the front, angling up toward the inner thigh, so the shorts don't ride up when you sit.
Fray and Rip
Wash and dry the shorts once after cutting and the hem frays on its own. For rips, make two short horizontal cuts with a craft knife, then pull out the vertical blue threads between them with tweezers. The white horizontal threads stay, which is what a real worn rip looks like.
Know When to Stop
Rips near the pockets or the seat can tear wider with wear. Keep heavy distressing on the front of the thighs, and add a few small stitches at the ends of a rip if you want it to stay the same size.
Heat Is No Reason to Retire the Flannel
Grunge doesn't have to disappear in July. The 30 outfits above take its core pieces, ripped denim, band tees, fishnets, combat boots and oversized layers, and make them breathe. Lighter fabrics, cropped cuts and mesh or open layers do most of the work. Soft slip dresses with hoodies or full plaid and leather, there's a hot-weather version either way, and most of it can come from your closet or a thrift store. Grunge was never about being perfect, and summer is a good time to remember that.
