Planning what everyone wears for family photos puts a quiet kind of pressure on one person, usually the one booking the session. You want the group to look put together without looking like it tried too hard. The good news is that this year’s family photo outfits have moved toward softer, wearable clothes: a shared color story instead of identical shirts, fabrics that move, and palettes chosen for the light rather than for the closet. When I style a family shoot, I dress the setting first and the people second, so each of the 25 looks below is tied to a place and a season, from a snowy field to a summer beach, with every family member worked out from head to toe.
Building a Family Palette From One Anchor Outfit
Most families start by shopping for the kids. I start with one adult outfit, usually the one with the most color or pattern, because it's the hardest piece to replace. Once that's fixed, every other outfit is built from colors already in it.
- Pick the anchor piece and pull three or four colors out of it: one main color, one or two supporting shades and one neutral.
- Give each person one main piece in a different color from that set, so no two people side by side wear the same shade.
- Allow only one patterned piece in the group, or two if one is a calm stripe or large check.
- Lay every outfit out on the floor together, shoes included, and take a phone photo. Anything that jumps out of that photo will jump out of the real ones.
- Check the location's own colors. Green woods, brown fields and blue water already sit in the frame, so plan around them.
1. Neutral knit layers for family photos

Soft golden morning light suits knits better than almost anything, because the texture catches it. Mom wears a cream cable-knit sweater dress just below the knee with tan ankle boots and small gold hoops. Dad wears an oatmeal crewneck over a white collared shirt, dark beige chinos and brown loafers. The daughter has a ribbed ivory knit dress with cream tights and suede booties, and the toddler a camel knit romper. Beige beanies on the kids are fine; I'd just pull them off for a few frames so the camera gets their hair and eyes. Nothing here matches exactly, yet cable, rib and plain wool tie the group together.
2. Denim on denim family photo outfit

All-denim sounds risky, and it works only if the washes are spread out. Mom takes the lightest wash: a jacket over a white cotton tank, a denim mini skirt and white low-top sneakers. Dad goes medium on top with a heather-grey tee and dark slim jeans, plus clean leather sneakers. The daughter wears a chambray shirt dress with a thin brown belt and white canvas shoes, and the younger son a denim button-up over khaki joggers with small suede boots. I always give the baby a break from blue, here a cream onesie and a tiny denim vest, because a frame of five identical blues looks like a uniform. Against green grass, the light, mid and dark washes give real depth.
3. Soft pastels family photo outfit spring

Spring gardens are already full of color, so the clothes should stay quieter than the flowers. Mom wears a dusty blush midi dress with flutter sleeves, nude block-heel sandals and a gold pendant. Dad wears a pale sage linen shirt with the sleeves rolled, tucked into light stone chinos, with woven loafers. The daughter has a butter-yellow eyelet dress, white ankle socks and Mary Janes, and the baby a mint knit onesie with beige booties. Blush, sage, butter and mint behave like a watercolor because none of them is fully saturated. A cream cardigan over Mom's shoulders gives her a second layer, which helps her stand out as the anchor of the group.
4. Earthy green tones family photo outfit

In a wooded clearing, greens let the family blend with the trees while faces stay bright. Mom wears an olive wrap dress with long sleeves, brown knee boots and a felt wide-brim hat. Dad wears a forest green flannel over a cream henley, dark brown corduroys and leather work boots. The teenage daughter chooses a sage smocked mini dress with brown ankle boots, and the young son a khaki crewneck over a plaid shirt, dark denim and small hiking boots. One thing I watch under heavy tree cover: green light bounces onto skin, so I keep a cream layer near every face. The henley and the son's collar do that job here.
5. Warm neutral family photo outfit fall

Late October at golden hour hands you the palette for free, so take it. Mom wears a camel midi wrap dress with a cream chunky cardigan, cognac ankle boots and a gold cuff. Dad wears an oatmeal cable knit over a light plaid shirt, dark tan chinos and brown Chelsea boots. The daughter's rust corduroy jumper goes over a cream tee with cream tights and tan suede boots, and the baby is in a warm beige knit with a matching beanie. A chunky cardigan adds bulk when Mom sits on the ground, so I have her leave it open and let it fall to the sides. Camel, oatmeal, rust and cognac sit right inside the colors of the leaves.
6. Burgundy layers family photo outfit

Burgundy gives a muted early spring or late fall location some drama without shouting. Mom wears a burgundy knit midi with a side slit, black opaque tights and black suede heeled booties, plus a long pendant for a vertical line. Dad wears a charcoal merino sweater over a burgundy and navy plaid shirt, dark jeans and black boots. The daughter has a burgundy velvet dress with a lace collar, black Mary Janes and cream tights, while the toddler wears a navy quilted vest over a burgundy thermal and grey corduroys. Velvet photographs darker than knit in the same shade, so I check the two side by side in daylight before the shoot rather than trusting the labels.
7. Light neutral flowing dress family photo

An open field under soft overcast sky is where a long dress earns its place. Mom wears a floor-length cream linen-blend dress with full long sleeves and a relaxed shape, flat nude sandals and a fine layered necklace. Dad keeps a white linen shirt untucked with light beige tailored shorts and tan slides. The daughter wears a white eyelet dress with a ruffled hem and bare feet, the baby a cream knit romper. Cream, white, beige and tan make a quiet, editorial picture, and the wind does the rest by moving the hems. I'd only do bare feet if someone has walked the field first to check for thistles and stones.
8. Western denim family photo outfit

A dirt road at sunset suits a Western look, as long as each person carries just one or two Western pieces. Mom wears a light-wash denim jacket over a lace-trimmed cream camisole, high-waisted relaxed jeans, tan pointed boots and a tooled belt. Dad has a dark denim snap shirt, black slim jeans, a wide belt with a statement buckle and classic cowboy boots. The daughter wears a denim shirtdress with brown boots and a cream felt hat; the son a chambray Western shirt, khakis and small cowboy boots. The baby wears a cream knit onesie, a tiny denim jacket and soft moccasins. Hat brims shade the eyes at low sun, so I ask the photographer to tip them back or shoot a few frames without.
9. Desert neutral family photo outfit

Sand and pale morning light call for one tone worn by everyone. Mom wears wide-leg cream linen trousers with a matching sleeveless knit tank, tan flat sandals and a straw tote. Dad wears a light beige linen shirt open at the collar with cream tailored chino shorts and woven sandals. The daughter has a sand knit tank dress with bare feet, the toddler son a cream short-sleeve linen romper, and the baby a white cotton bubble romper. Beige on beige depends on texture, so I mix linen, knit and cotton on purpose. In bright sand the whites can lose detail, which is why I keep the palest piece on the baby, who is held closest to the shade of the adults.
10. Casual denim and autumn layers family photo

This is the outfit for a family that wants to move. Mom wears dark skinny jeans and an oversized rust knit, half tucked at the front, with tan suede ankle boots and a wool felt hat. Dad puts a navy quilted vest over a cream thermal henley with mid-wash straight jeans and brown work boots. The daughter wears a mustard cardigan over a white cotton dress with cream tights and brown boots; the son an olive hoodie under a denim jacket with khaki joggers and small hiking boots. Rust, navy, mustard and olive connect without matching. Kids who can climb and run in their clothes give the photographer real laughter rather than polite smiles.
11. Emerald green winter family photo outfit

Fresh snow and evergreens give the strongest contrast of any season, and a jewel tone holds its own against both. Mom wears an emerald velvet wrap dress at mid-calf with black opaque tights, black heeled ankle boots and a black wool wide-brim hat. Dad wears a cream cable turtleneck under a charcoal wool topcoat, black trousers and dress boots. The daughter's forest green velvet dress has a satin sash, with black patent Mary Janes and cream tights, and the son wears a cream Aran knit over a green plaid shirt, grey corduroys and black boots. Snow throws light upward, which flatters faces, but it also makes cameras underexpose, so the cream knits near each face matter.
12. Black tie formal family photo outfit

A studio with controlled light is the place for formalwear, because nothing outdoors competes with it. Mom wears a full-length black off-shoulder gown with a small train, sheer black tights, black satin pointed heels and a single pearl drop earring. Dad wears a classic black tuxedo with satin peak lapels, a white dress shirt, black bow tie and polished oxfords. The daughter has a black velvet dress with a tulle skirt, lace-trimmed white socks and patent Mary Janes, and the toddler a small black suit with a white shirt, bow tie and loafers. Black fabrics swallow detail under studio light, so I steam out every crease and lint-roll each piece just before the first frame.
13. Monochrome black and white family photo outfit

Black and white against a plain urban wall gives a graphic, modern picture. Mom wears an oversized white button-down tucked into high-waisted black wide-leg trousers, black pointed pumps and a black leather belt. Dad pairs a black merino crewneck with white straight jeans, black leather sneakers and a silver watch. The teenage daughter wears a white ribbed midi dress with black combat boots and a leather jacket over one shoulder, and the son a plain black hoodie, white denim and black high-tops. A strict two-color rule creates rhythm without anyone dressing alike. I spread the whites and blacks so no two people standing side by side are in the same split, or the group merges into blocks.
14. Deep ruby red family photo outfit

Warm indoor light and a single bold color make faces the obvious focus. Mom wears a deep ruby satin midi with a cowl neck and thin straps, nude strappy heels and a gold cuff. Dad wears a charcoal suit, white shirt, deep burgundy silk tie and black oxfords. The daughter has a ruby tulle dress with a velvet bodice, white tights and gold ballet flats, and the baby a cream knit romper with a small burgundy bow tie. Satin reflects everything, including creases and the shape of what's under it, so I check Mom's dress seated and standing before we start. The greys and creams around the red keep it from feeling heavy.
15. Vintage velvet family photo outfit

Antique furniture and soft window light set up a vintage portrait. Mom wears a black satin midi with a deep V and a small bow at the waist, black velvet heels and pearl drops. The daughter matches the period feel in a cranberry velvet dress with ivory lace collar and cuffs, white socks and black patent Mary Janes. Dad keeps it understated in a dark brown tweed blazer over a cream turtleneck, grey wool trousers and brown brogues, while the toddler son wears a cream cardigan over a plaid shirt, brown corduroys and small loafers. The risk with vintage styling is a set that looks like a costume drama. Keeping Dad and the toddler in plain textures, not period pieces, is what keeps it believable.
16. Peach toned family photo outfit spring

Peach and cream are among the most forgiving colors I use for an orchard or blooming garden session, because muted peach warms almost any skin tone without turning orange. Mom wears a peach linen midi with a square neck and puffed sleeves, woven tan slides and a straw clutch. Dad wears an untucked cream linen shirt, light beige chino shorts and tan loafers. The older daughter has a peach chiffon dress with a smocked bodice and bare feet, the toddler girl a peach gingham dress with white sandals, and the baby a cream knit romper with peach trim. Linen wrinkles in the car, so I tell families to dress at the location or hang the linen until the last minute.
17. Floral dress and khakis family photo outfit

When one person wears a print, everyone else should wear the plain colors pulled from it. Here it's Mom, in a wrap midi with a soft watercolor floral in blush, sage and cream, short flutter sleeves and nude heeled sandals. Dad wears a crisp white polo, tailored khaki chinos and brown boat shoes. The daughter wears a white cotton dress with light floral embroidery, white socks and tan sandals, and the son a light blue oxford, khaki shorts and brown loafers. One print anchors the frame; two or three start to fight. I'd keep the floral scale medium, because a very small busy print can shimmer strangely on a digital camera sensor.
18. Cozy neutral spring family photo outfit

Early spring often starts cold and warms by mid-morning, so this look relies on layers. Mom wears a cream chunky sweater over a flowing blush midi skirt, tan suede ankle boots and a gold locket. Dad layers a heather-beige cardigan over a white tee with grey chinos and tan leather sneakers. The daughter wears a cream knit tunic dress with oatmeal leggings and suede booties, the toddler girl a dusty rose sweater with cream leggings, and the baby a blush knit romper and beanie. Knits soften the edges of everyone in the frame. My one check: chunky sweaters shed fluff onto dark clothing, so I keep a lint roller in the bag.
19. Denim and white family photo outfit

Denim and white looks clean in nearly every setting and season. Mom wears white wide-leg cropped jeans with a white sleeveless linen blouse, tan flat sandals and a straw hat. Dad keeps it simple in a white short-sleeve henley, mid-wash straight jeans and brown leather flip-flops. The daughter has a white eyelet sundress, bare feet and a small white flower behind her ear, while the son wears a white tee, light denim shorts and white canvas sneakers. The baby gets a white onesie and a tiny denim bucket hat. In strong midday sun, white can lose all its texture on camera, so I push these sessions toward the softer hours or into open shade.
20. Soft burgundy family photo outfit spring

Early spring landscapes are still brown and muted, which is why soft burgundy suits them better than pastels. Mom wears a burgundy knit midi with a side slit, a long cream duster cardigan and tan suede heeled booties. Dad wears a burgundy and cream plaid flannel over a white tee, dark jeans and brown boots. The daughter has a burgundy smocked dress with a cream Peter Pan collar, cream tights and tan flats, and the son a cream cable sweater with burgundy elbow patches, grey jeans and brown boots. I give each person the burgundy in a different form, solid, plaid, smocked or trim, so it reads as a thread rather than a uniform.
21. Country western neutral family photo outfit

An open pasture at golden hour fits this relaxed, rustic family look. Mom wears a cream eyelet blouse with a ruffled neckline, high-waisted bootcut jeans, tan cowboy boots and a tan felt hat. Dad wears a light-wash denim snap shirt, dark brown trousers, an engraved belt buckle and brown boots. The daughter has a cream linen dress with lace trim, brown cowboy boots and a small tan hat; the son a plaid pearl-snap shirt, khakis and brown boots. The baby wears a cream knit romper and tiny denim jacket. New cowboy boots are stiff for the first few wears, so I ask everyone to walk around in theirs at home first. Pastures are uneven.
22. Warm tones golden hour family photo outfit

The half hour before sunset turns everything gold, and warm clothing leans into it. Mom wears a relaxed rust sleeveless maxi with tan gladiator sandals and layered gold necklaces. Dad wears a cream linen shirt with rolled sleeves, olive chino shorts and brown leather sandals. The daughter has a mustard cotton sundress with a ruffled hem, bare feet and a small sunflower behind her ear, and the son a warm beige linen shirt, khaki shorts and brown sandals. The baby wears a rust knit romper. Golden light already adds warmth, so I keep the colors earthy rather than bright; a saturated orange in that light can push skin toward sunburn red.
23. Romantic pastel family photo outfit

A lakeside garden in late afternoon is a natural home for pastels. Mom wears a lavender chiffon maxi with a draped bodice and flutter sleeves, silver flat sandals and a pearl bracelet. Dad wears a light grey linen blazer over a white dress shirt, pale blue chinos and tan loafers. The daughter has a pale pink tulle dress with a satin sash, white socks and silver flats, the son a light blue linen shirt, cream shorts and tan sandals, and the baby a lavender knit romper. Too many pastels can turn sugary. Dad's grey blazer and the son's cream shorts are what stop that, and chiffon's movement near water gives the photographer something to work with.
24. Playful pastels family photo outfit

A park session with kids is about letting them play, so the clothes need to survive it. Mom wears a mint cotton midi with a smocked bodice, white flat sandals and a woven straw crossbody. Dad wears an untucked pale peach linen shirt, light grey chino shorts and white canvas sneakers. The daughter has a lilac gingham twirl dress, white socks and silver sandals; the son a sky-blue polo, khaki shorts and white sneakers; the baby a mint and white striped romper. Gingham is a pattern I allow even with small kids because its check is large enough to stay calm on camera. Cotton and linen also forgive a grass stain better than satin does.
25. Modern western warm tones family photo outfit
A desert at dusk takes modern Western styling well. Mom wears a terracotta suede midi skirt with a cream silk camisole, a tan leather belt and cognac pointed boots. Dad wears a dark brown leather jacket over a cream thermal henley, black slim jeans and black Chelsea boots. The daughter has a rust suede mini with a white cotton blouse, brown boots and a braided leather headband, and the son a cream Western shirt, dark denim and brown boots. The baby wears a terracotta knit romper. Suede marks with water and dust, so I'd brush it before the session and avoid kneeling in damp sand. Terracotta, cognac and cream stay Southwestern without tipping into theme dressing.
What Looks Fine in the Mirror but Wrong on Camera
A camera sees clothes differently from the way you do, and a few things catch families out every season.
- Very small, tight patterns such as fine stripes or tiny houndstooth can produce a shimmering ripple on digital sensors.
- Neon and very bright saturated colors reflect onto chins and cheeks, giving skin a color cast that is hard to correct.
- Large logos and text on shirts pull the eye straight off faces, and they date a picture quickly.
- Pure white in full sun can lose all its detail, while very thin fabrics turn see-through when backlit at sunset.
- Brand-new clothes still show packaging creases. Wash or steam everything a few days ahead.
Keeping Small Kids Happy in Their Session Clothes
The best outfit fails if a toddler refuses to wear it. I ask parents to put kids in their photo clothes once at home before the day, so scratchy tags, tight collars and stiff shoes show up early. On the day, dress the youngest ones at the location if you can, and keep them in an old shirt for the drive. Bring wipes, a spare top and a snack that won't stain, such as plain crackers rather than berries. Tights and Mary Janes look sweet, but I'd keep a pair of sneakers nearby for any walking between spots, then switch shoes just before the camera comes up.
Dress the Light, Then the Family
Family photos don't need identical outfits to look like they belong together. A shared palette, a mix of textures and clothes that let everyone sit, run and laugh will get you there. I build every shoot from one anchor outfit, usually the person who will stand in the middle, and take the colors for everyone else from it. Then I check it all in the light we'll actually shoot in. If each person feels like themselves in what they're wearing, the relaxed faces follow, and those are the frames families end up printing.
