Late August into September is the season I get the most "I have nothing to wear" messages about, and it's rarely true. The closet is full of summer clothes that still work at two in the afternoon and feel wrong by seven. The fix is layering: a sundress under a denim jacket, a fine knit over a flowy skirt, a maxi dress with a leather moto on top. These are the very best transitional looks I keep coming back to, each shown head to toe so you can see how the shoes and bag carry the change of season. Most of them start with something you already own.

Sorting Your Summer Closet Into Keep, Layer and Store
Before I put together a single transitional outfit, I go through the summer rail and sort it three ways. It takes about twenty minutes and saves a month of guessing in the morning.
- Keep as is: midi and maxi dresses in darker or muted prints, crepe and satin skirts, plain tees and tanks, denim of every length.
- Wear only with a layer: sleeveless dresses, jumpsuits, rompers and shorts. They stay in rotation, but only with a jacket, cardigan or turtleneck planned for them.
- Store until next year: pale pastels, white eyelet, bright tropical prints and very thin gauze. They look out of season under autumn light, however warm the afternoon is.
The middle group is where most of the outfits below live. Once you know which pieces need a partner, you can buy one or two layers that work with all of them instead of a new set of clothes.
If I had to name the layers that do the most work across that middle group, it would be a denim jacket, a fine-gauge cardigan in a neutral, an oversized blazer and a thin black or cream turtleneck. Between them they cover nearly every outfit on this list. Add a pair of ankle boots in a color that goes with your bags, and you have the whole changeover for the price of a few pieces rather than a full shop.
1. Flowy Sundress With Denim Jacket Outfit

A floral sundress with a denim jacket is the easiest crossover there is, and I'd start here if you only try one idea. The trick is the print: a darker, moodier floral or a solid jewel tone reads September, while a pale pastel still reads July. Midi and maxi lengths work better than short ones once evenings cool. White low-tops are right for errands; heeled ankle boots take it to dinner. A woven crossbody and small gold hoops are plenty.
2. High-Waist Shorts With Oversized Cardigan Outfit

Shorts can stay in rotation longer than people think if you add warmth on top instead of below. Tuck a ribbed tank or fitted bodysuit into light-wash denim shorts, then add a slouchy oversized cardigan in oatmeal or camel. The tuck is not optional: an untucked top under an oversized knit erases your shape completely. Suede or leather pull-on ankle boots ground it, and a structured shoulder bag sharpens the slouch. When the afternoon heats up, the cardigan comes off and you're back in a summer outfit.
3. Midi Skirt With Lightweight Sweater Outfit

Satin and chiffon skirts move well and don't trap heat, so they bridge the two seasons better than most fabrics. Pick one in champagne, blush or olive and tuck in a fine-gauge crewneck or V-neck. Fine-gauge is the important word; a bulky knit tucked into a delicate skirt makes a lump at the waistband. I wear strappy sandals while it's warm and switch to pointed mules or a low block heel later. A slim belt and a top-handle bag finish it for brunch or a desk day.
4. Tank Top With Wide-Leg Trousers Outfit

A fitted ribbed tank with high-waist wide-leg trousers covers your legs and leaves your arms free, which is the right ratio for a hot afternoon and a cool evening. Crepe drapes better than linen here and wrinkles far less, so it's my pick for anything you'll sit in for hours. Add a cropped tailored blazer or a light trench after sunset. Block-heel sandals or loafers keep it comfortable all day. I stick to cream, taupe and black because any two of them go together, which makes repacking the outfit later in the week easy.
5. Maxi Dress With Leather Jacket Outfit

Put a black or brown leather jacket over a summer maxi and the dress stops looking like vacation. The soft fabric against stiff leather is what makes it work. Dark florals, burgundy and olive dresses handle the change best; a white eyelet maxi fights the jacket. Combat boots or pointed ankle boots both suit it, and a chain-strap bag adds a little hardware. If you're petite, choose a jacket that ends at the waist, since a longer leather jacket over a maxi can leave you looking all fabric.
6. Slip Dress With Oversized Blazer Outfit

Slip dresses read as nightwear on their own to some people, and an oversized blazer fixes that instantly. The sleek bias cut against a boxy jacket gives the outfit its shape. Champagne, chocolate or emerald slips go well with beige, camel or charcoal blazers. I always check the blazer's shoulder seam: it can drop a little past your shoulder in an oversized cut, but if it slides halfway to the elbow, it's too big. Strappy heeled sandals are fine early in the season; knee-high boots carry it later. A mini shoulder bag and layered gold chains finish it.
7. Cropped Sweater With Midi Skirt Outfit

Cropped sweaters only work when the hem meets the skirt's waistband exactly, so I test that in the mirror before anything else. A small gap of skin looks playful on some people and messy on others. A chunky rib in cream, rust or charcoal sits nicely on an A-line or bias satin skirt. Chunky knits shed and pill against satin, so keep a lint roller nearby. White leather sneakers make it walkable, and heeled ankle boots dress it for drinks. Keep the bag and jewelry small so the proportions do the talking.
8. White Tee With Plaid Skirt Outfit

A tucked white tee and a plaid skirt bridge seasons because the tee is pure summer and the plaid is pure autumn. Rust, navy, forest green and caramel plaids feel like fall right away. When it cools, add a long cardigan or a shacket over the top. Plaid minis need opaque tights by October, so I'd lean toward the midi if you want to wear it longer. Chunky loafers or platform sneakers, a quilted crossbody and studs make it a back-to-school or weekend favorite.
9. Sleeveless Jumpsuit With Cropped Jacket Outfit

Sleeveless jumpsuits are one of the most useful pieces you can carry into fall, as long as you give them a waist. A cropped denim or moto jacket stops right where the jumpsuit cinches and fixes the shapeless middle that one-pieces can have. Khaki, olive and black keep it seasonless. Platform sneakers for a day out, heeled mules for something smarter. A wide leather belt adds structure, and a canvas tote or satchel holds the jacket when you don't need it. It's three pieces in total, which is part of the appeal. The downside is honest: bathroom trips in a jumpsuit plus a jacket are a hassle.
10. Shirt Dress With Knee-High Boots Outfit

Cotton and linen shirt dresses take to knee-high boots well, since the boot adds the seasonal weight the dress lacks. Sand, olive and terracotta feel like early fall. Belt it thinly at the waist. The detail I check is the gap between hem and boot top: a few inches of leg showing looks right, while a hem that grazes the boot shortens the legs. On colder days, a long trench or wool-blend wrap coat goes on top. A structured crossbody and sunglasses suit it for brunch, the office or a shopping day.
11. Linen Pants With Button-Up Shirt Outfit

Summer linen trousers don't have to go away in September. A crisp cotton button-up, tucked and belted, makes them look tailored; knotted at the front, they feel more holiday. Beige, cream and soft sage linen sit comfortably next to brown leather and suede accessories. Leather sandals by day, suede loafers or heeled clogs once the evening cools. Linen creases at the knee as soon as you sit, so I'd steam it right before leaving. A woven leather tote and tortoiseshell sunglasses finish a look I like for late-August gatherings and early-September weekends when the weather can't decide.
12. Romper With Long Cardigan Outfit

A duster-length cardigan over a short romper balances leg with length, and I find this one surprisingly flattering on tall women. Solid olive, rust or navy rompers make the best base, with a textured knit in a neutral over the top. On anyone under about 5'3", I'd suggest a cardigan that ends at mid-thigh instead, since a duster can overwhelm a short frame. Flat ankle boots or slip-on sneakers keep it comfortable. A felt hat and a slouchy hobo bag bring in fall texture for a pumpkin patch or a weekend outing.
13. Cropped Hoodie With High-Waist Skirt Outfit

A cropped pullover hoodie with a high-waist satin or pleated skirt is an athleisure-inspired transition look that works because the two pieces argue with each other. The hoodie is sporty; the skirt makes it look intentional. Keep the colors tonal, charcoal with black or oatmeal with caramel satin, so it doesn't look like two outfits. Platform sneakers or combat boots hold the casual side, and gold hoops add a bit of polish. A mini backpack keeps your hands free for a day in the city.
14. Overalls With Striped Long-Sleeve Top Outfit

Denim or cotton twill overalls were made for this season, and a long-sleeve Breton stripe underneath does all the warming. Roll the cuffs once to show ankle boots or platform sneakers. The fit point I watch is the strap length: if the bib sits too low, the overalls sag at the seat, so I adjust before deciding they don't suit. A light scarf at the neck or on the bag adds color, and a canvas tote with minimal gold jewelry is plenty for markets, walks or a travel day.
15. Sleeveless Dress With Turtleneck Underneath Outfit

Putting a fine turtleneck under a sleeveless dress is one of my favorite ways to make a summer piece last into October. It adds warmth at the neck and arms without bulk, as long as the knit is thin; a chunky turtleneck pushes the armholes out. Olive, rust or navy dresses over black or cream knits look right. Opaque tights and ankle boots finish the change. A structured crossbody and studs keep it neat for an office day or a museum visit.
16. Jeans With Graphic Tee And Blazer Outfit

Straight-leg jeans and a vintage-style graphic tee become a dinner outfit once you add a structured blazer. Slightly oversized works best: plaid, houndstooth, camel or charcoal. Roll the cuffs so it looks thrown on. If the graphic is large, keep the blazer plain; two patterns plus a slogan is a lot. Chunky loafers or heeled ankle boots and a leather shoulder bag finish a mix of casual and polished that suits a creative office or drinks with friends.
17. Flowy Skirt With Knit Top Outfit

A full midi or maxi skirt with a snug knit top is a proportion trick: volume below, a close fit above, and the waist marked where they meet. Muted florals, earth tones or soft jewel colors all work for the skirt. Tuck a fine cashmere or ribbed sweater into the waistband and add a slim belt. A small heel on the ankle boot helps if the skirt is long, because flat boots under a maxi can make the hem drag. A structured top-handle bag suits date nights and evening plans.
18. Burgundy Dress With Ankle Boots Outfit

Burgundy is the quickest way I know to make a simple dress look like fall. Even a summer silhouette in that shade reads seasonal. Puff sleeves, a waist tie or soft pleats keep it from looking plain. Neutral suede or leather ankle boots let the color lead, and a camel trench or light wrap coat handles the evening chill. Burgundy flatters most skin tones, though very fair skin can look flushed next to it, so I'd test it near the face first. A structured bag and gold or tortoiseshell accessories round it out for transitional-outfit inspiration boards.
19. Floral Midi Dress With Suede Jacket Outfit

A floral midi under a caramel, chocolate or rust suede jacket holds onto summer while the jacket brings in fall. Suede ankle boots in a matching tone tie it together. Suede is a fair-weather fabric, though; rain marks it and it darkens when wet, so I'd keep this outfit for a dry forecast and treat the jacket with a protector spray first. Sunglasses, a leather crossbody and maybe a fine pendant are all you need for a daytime event or a weekend away.
20. Denim-On-Denim Fall Transition Outfit

Double denim looks modern now when the washes match, which is the opposite of the old rule. A dark-wash denim shirt tucked into a dark denim maxi or midi skirt makes one clean column. Break up the indigo at the waist with a brown leather belt. For warmth, a camel wool-blend coat or a longline vest sits well on top. Pointed suede ankle boots or leather knee-highs keep the line long. Dark indigo can rub off onto pale bags and light suede, so I'd carry a dark leather satchel with this one. Subtle gold jewelry finishes it.
Which Summer Fabrics Last Into October
Color gets most of the attention in transitional dressing, but fabric decides how long a piece actually survives the change. Here's how I judge the usual summer materials once mornings drop into the 50s.
Denim and twill
Denim is the clear winner. It's heavy enough to cut wind and it reads as every season. Twill overalls and cotton utility pieces behave the same way.
Linen
Linen is fine in September, especially in darker or earthy shades, but it's cold once the wind picks up because the weave is loose. Wear it under a coat or swap to a linen-wool blend if you have one.
Satin, crepe and jersey
Satin and crepe skirts carry on into fall with tights and boots, and jersey dresses layer well under jackets. Silk and satin spot with rain, so on a wet day I'd pick crepe or jersey instead.
Gauze and eyelet
These are the first to go. They're cut to let air through, which is the opposite of what you want, and they look summery even in dark colors. I store them first and don't miss them.
Swap the Shoes First, Then the Fabrics
You don't need a new wardrobe for this stretch of the year. Almost every outfit above takes a summer piece you already own and adds one layer: a jacket, a cardigan, a blazer or a turtleneck. If you're starting from zero, change the shoes first, since boots and loafers shift a summer dress more than anything else. Then bring in suede and knit textures, and move the palette toward rust, olive, burgundy and navy. Do it one piece at a time and you'll be ready well before the weather is.
