This summer's clothes are looser, lighter and a lot kinder to a hot afternoon than the tight, structured pieces of a few years ago. Most of what I'm putting on clients right now is relaxed linen, softer tailoring, a bit more color and a few textures that move when you walk. Below are 20 full outfits I'd actually send someone out the door in, from a linen set for the farmers market to a fringe dress for a rooftop dinner. For each one I've noted what I check in the fitting room and where the look tends to go wrong, because a trend only helps you if it survives a real day in the heat.

How Linen, Cotton and Viscose Actually Feel by 3 PM
Almost every look below leans on three fabrics, and they behave very differently once the day heats up. I always tell clients to shop for the afternoon, not the cool morning in the fitting room.
- Linen is the coolest of the three because its fibers are stiff and stand away from the skin, letting air move. It wrinkles fast and softens with every wash. A linen blend with a little cotton or viscose creases less.
- Cotton in a loose weave, like voile, poplin or eyelet, breathes well, but it soaks up sweat and dries slowly. Light cotton also goes see-through in pale colors, so check it against a window.
- Viscose drapes and swings beautifully and feels cool on first touch. It shows sweat marks more than linen does and can shrink if washed warm, so I keep it for evenings and lower-effort days.
Satin and polyester slips look sleek, but they trap heat against the body. On a truly hot day I'd save them for evenings with air conditioning.
1. Linen Matching Set With Sandals

A linen set is the lightest thing you can wear that still looks finished on a hot July afternoon. I like an oversized white or pastel button-up left open over a bandeau or camisole, with relaxed high-waist shorts or wide-leg pants cut from the same cloth. Flat tan or nude leather sandals, a woven straw tote and thin gold jewelry are all it needs. The one thing I warn people about: linen creases the moment you sit, so buy the set in a slightly washed or garment-dyed finish, where the wrinkles look intended rather than accidental.
2. Wide-Leg Trousers With Ribbed Tank

Wide-leg trousers earn their place by how they swing when you walk. Cream or sand linen-blend pants that sit high on the waist and fall full through the leg, with a fitted ribbed tank tucked in, give you that fitted-top, full-bottom balance. Black, white or a soft butter yellow all work for the tank. I always hem these to the shoe you'll wear most, usually flat leather mules, so the fabric just grazes the top of the foot instead of dragging. Add a structured crossbody and a thin chain necklace and it holds up for a casual office or a long lunch.
3. Floral Midi Dress With Flat Sandals

Florals only feel tired when the print is stiff. The softer, painterly blooms on cotton or crinkle viscose look new again, and a floral midi dress with a smocked bodice and small puffed sleeves sits nicely between sweet and relaxed. Smocking stretches, so you can size for the bust and let the skirt do its thing. I keep everything around it plain: flat tan sandals, a woven crossbody, small gold hoops. It goes from a garden party to an outdoor wedding, and you can sit and eat in it without thinking about your waistband.
4. Denim Maxi Skirt With White Tank

The denim maxi skirt is where denim went this year: longer, looser, often with a front slit or raw hem. Check the slit before you buy. Rigid denim doesn't give, so without a slit or a back vent you'll be taking half-steps all day. A light or vintage-fade wash with a crisp white ribbed tank tucked all the way in keeps it clean. Tan sandals keep it summery, western-style boots make it tougher, and a slim leather belt, layered gold chains and big sunglasses finish it for a city sidewalk or a boardwalk.
5. Bermuda Shorts With Oversized Blazer

Bermuda shorts have moved from vacation clothes into everyday tailoring. Look for a beige, cream or soft gray pair that ends just above the knee with a flat, clean waistband. Over a white tee or sleeveless blouse I add an oversized linen-blend blazer, then loafers or backless mules. The blazer matters most here: if the shoulder seam drops past your own shoulder by more than an inch, it reads borrowed rather than relaxed. A slim belt and a top-handle bag make it right for a creative office or dinner without the heat of full-length trousers.
6. Slip Dress With White Derby Shoes

A chunky white derby shoe under a slip dress sounds wrong until you see it. A midi slip in silk, satin or a light cotton blend, in sage, dusty blue or black, gets a menswear edge from the bright laced shoe. I put a fine-gauge cardigan over the shoulders and a slim shoulder bag on top. One honest caution: satin slips cling and show every seam underneath, so if that bothers you, choose the cotton version, which hangs straighter. It's a good look for a gallery afternoon or a coffee date.
7. Pastel Co-Ord Set With Sneakers

Pastel co-ords are the quickest way to look dressed. A short-sleeve button-up and high-waist tailored shorts in lilac, powder blue or blush give you one unbroken line of color. I break it with a single neutral: a small crossbody in tan or cream. White platform sneakers keep it walkable and silver jewelry stays out of the way. If pale pastels wash you out, wear the set with a deeper lip color or move the lighter shade to the bottom half. It suits market runs, casual Fridays and long drives.
8. Barrel Jeans With Cropped Top

Barrel jeans curve out through the thigh and knee and taper back at the ankle, and that curve is the whole point. Because the leg is so full, everything above it needs to be close: a fitted cropped tank or baby tee in black, white or a neutral. In the fitting room I check the ankle, since if the hem sits too long the curve collapses into a plain wide leg. Flat sandals or slim sneakers, a canvas tote and a few stacked rings make it an easy weekend outfit for a flea market or dinner with friends.
9. Cargo Pants With Fitted Tank

Cargo pants in lightweight cotton twill give you pockets without the bulk of winter utility wear. I prefer a straight or slightly wide leg in olive, khaki or stone. Tuck a black or white ribbed tank in fully, because the pocket flaps already add width at the hip and a loose top doubles it. Roll the hems once, add chunky sandals or sporty slides and wear a nylon belt bag crossbody. It's the outfit I suggest for travel days and errands, when you want your phone in a pocket and nothing to fuss over.
10. Tank Dress With Platform Sneakers

A tank dress becomes a workhorse once you stop pairing it with delicate shoes. A ribbed or crochet-knit midi tank dress in a neutral skims the body, and white platform sneakers make it sporty. Tie an oversized denim jacket or a light technical jacket around your shoulders, then add a baseball cap and a mini backpack. Crochet knits do stretch with wear and can sag at the seat, so I always try them on a size that feels snug at first. It takes you from a morning walk to an afternoon with friends without changing.
11. White Summer Dress With Strappy Sandals

I keep coming back to the white summer dress because nothing else looks this fresh in heat. This year the cut is a little looser and longer, with eyelet lace, broderie anglaise or small cutouts for texture. Before you buy, hold it up to daylight: thin white cotton can go sheer, and a slip or lining in your skin tone fixes that. Flat strappy sandals in tan or metallic, a woven rattan bag, beaded necklaces and a wide straw hat round it out for beach dinners and holiday walks. It photographs well in natural light too.
12. Sheer Skirt Layered Over Shorts

Sheer layering is easier to wear now that it's done over something solid. A sheer maxi or midi skirt in chiffon or organza goes over fitted bike shorts or tailored boyshorts, with a light knit or plain tank on top. The trick I use is matching the shorts to the skirt color, or going a shade darker, so the layer reads as depth rather than exposure. Organza is stiffer and holds a shape; chiffon drifts. Pointed flats or strappy sandals and a small sleek bag keep it tidy.
13. Utility Shorts With Simple Tank

Utility shorts are built for a real day: khaki or olive, relaxed fit, big pockets that hold keys and a phone. I tuck in an ivory or white ribbed tank and go with flat leather sandals or sporty flip-flops. A canvas belt, a chunky resin bracelet and a big tote finish it. Watch the length on these. Deep pockets inside a very short short will poke out below the hem, so I look for a 4 to 5 inch inseam that covers the pocket bags. Good for market mornings and park afternoons.
14. Vintage Denim Jacket Over Dress

A faded, slightly oversized denim jacket over a midi dress handles the summer problem nobody talks about: freezing air conditioning. Underneath, a soft cotton slip or a button-front midi keeps things light. I push the jacket sleeves up to the forearm so the dress's shape still shows at the waist, and I avoid cropped jackets with long dresses because they cut the body at an awkward point. White sneakers or flat sandals, retro sunglasses and a canvas or leather tote. Jacket on indoors, off in the sun.
15. Linen Trousers With Polo Shirt

The polo and linen trouser pairing borrows from preppy sportswear without looking like a uniform. High-waisted wide-leg linen trousers in cream, navy or sand make a long line, and a fitted cotton polo, striped or solid, tucks in neatly. A knit polo will hold its collar far better than a thin jersey one, which tends to curl after a few washes. Sleek loafers or minimal sandals, a braided leather belt and a structured shoulder bag finish it for a casual office or a lunch meeting.
16. Fringe Dress With Minimal Sandals

Fringe this summer is quieter: a cream, sand or taupe midi dress with fringe only at the hem or sleeves. That restraint is what keeps it from looking like festival wear. I pair it with very plain flat sandals, simple gold jewelry and a small structured clutch so the fringe is the only moving part. Fringe tangles in bag straps and snags on wicker chairs, so a clutch beats a crossbody here. It's my choice for a rooftop dinner or an evening event where you want a bit of movement in the breeze.
17. Oversized Tee With Biker Shorts

The oversized tee and biker shorts only look intentional when the proportions are deliberate. Pick a heavyweight cotton tee, graphic or plain, that ends mid-thigh, so roughly an inch of short shows below it. Thin tees cling to the shorts' waistband and look sloppy. The shorts should be high-waisted, black and fully opaque; do a squat test in good light before you commit. Pulled-up white crew socks, chunky sneakers, a cap and a nylon crossbody turn it into a hot-day errand outfit that still looks put together.
18. Maxi Skirt With Cropped Top

A maxi skirt with a cropped top works because the short top answers all that length. Pick a lightweight cotton or satin-finish skirt, solid or a quiet print, and a fitted cropped tee or sleeveless knit. If you're petite, choose a top that ends right at the skirt's waistband rather than above it; a gap of skin cuts you in half. Flat sandals or espadrilles, layered pendants and a slouchy shoulder bag take it to date night or a casual wedding with the right accessories.
19. Tailored Shorts Set With Loafers

A matching tailored shorts set looks more expensive than it usually is. A short-sleeve or sleeveless button-up over pleated or flat-front shorts in a viscose-linen blend gives you a soft drape that pure linen doesn't. Viscose does shrink in hot water, so wash cold and air dry. Classic leather loafers, a slim belt and a top-handle bag carry it from a daytime meeting to evening drinks. I'd stick to cream, putty or soft sage so each half can also be worn with other pieces all summer.
20. Cotton Midi Dress With Espadrilles

I finish with the easiest piece of all: a light cotton midi dress, solid or in a small print. You want it to skim, not cling, with a relaxed waist and an A-line or column shape. Espadrilles, flat or wedge, in natural jute add texture and a little height, though jute soles soak up water, so they're not for a wet lawn. A woven straw bag, beaded bracelets and soft-framed sunglasses finish it. This is the dress I tell clients to pack first; it needs no thought and still looks right on a warm Saturday.
Twenty Looks Out of About a Dozen Pieces
You don't need twenty new outfits to wear this list. When I build a summer wardrobe with someone, I look for the pieces that show up again and again, and I buy those first. Read back through the list and you'll notice the same few items doing most of the work.
The repeaters
- A fitted ribbed tank in white and one in black. They appear under wide-leg trousers, cargo pants, utility shorts and a denim maxi skirt.
- One pair of flat tan leather sandals, which works with nearly every dress and short here.
- A linen or linen-blend set. Worn together it's outfit 1; split up, the shirt goes over a slip dress and the pants go with a polo.
- An oversized denim jacket for air conditioning and evening breezes.
- A light cotton midi dress that takes sneakers, sandals or espadrilles.
Add one statement piece at a time, such as barrel jeans, a sheer skirt or derby shoes, and test it against those basics before buying the next. If it pairs with three things you own, it stays. If it only works with one exact outfit, I usually send it back.
When Shorts Aren't Allowed or Aren't You
Plenty of offices still frown on shorts, and some people simply don't like their legs bare. Most of these looks translate. Swap Bermuda shorts for cropped wide-leg trousers that end above the ankle bone, keep the blazer and loafers, and you have the same cool line. For the tailored shorts set, look for the matching trouser if the brand makes one. A midi skirt in the same linen covers the co-ord idea, and the tank-and-cargo outfit works just as well with a long, lightweight cargo skirt.
Start With One Trend and Your Best-Fitting Basics
If you take one thing from these 20 outfits, let it be that clothes for heat should move with you. Linen sets, soft tailored shorts, sheer layers and new takes on denim all follow that rule. My advice is to add one or two trend pieces, like a pastel co-ord or derby shoes with a slip dress, to staples you already know fit you. Even an oversized tee with biker shorts counts. The summer outfits I see people wear most are the ones they stop noticing after ten minutes.
