Most people who ask me about aesthetics don't want to copy a mood board. They want one or two styles they can actually wear on a Tuesday. That's what I've tried to do here: twenty named aesthetics, from cottagecore to clean girl, each turned into a complete outfit with real pieces, plus a note on what makes it work and what tips it into costume. Every style has its own palette and silhouette. Read through, notice which ones you keep stopping at, and treat those as the ones to try first.

Wearing an Aesthetic Without It Looking Like Fancy Dress
The full outfits below are complete versions of each style. On most days, you'll want a lighter dose. The method I use is to pick the one or two pieces that define the aesthetic and build the rest from ordinary clothes.
- Dark academia: the tweed blazer. Wear it over jeans and a plain knit and it still reads scholarly.
- Balletcore: a wrap cardigan or satin flats, not both plus a tulle skirt.
- Cottagecore: one smocked floral dress. Everything else can be plain.
- Y2K: low-slung jeans or a baby tee, with one piece of playful jewelry.
- Witchcore: a velvet skirt or a bell-sleeve top, with simple shoes.
A good rule is to count the obvious signals. Past three, people start seeing the theme before they see you.
Your daily life should also decide which styles get the most room. Royalcore and barbiecore are occasion looks for most people; gorpcore, clean girl and minimalist pieces get worn several times a week. If you're spending on one aesthetic, spend where the wear is.
1. Clean Girl Aesthetic Outfit

Clean girl style is mostly about removing things. A cream ribbed tank tucked into high-waisted beige wide-leg linen trousers, an oversized beige blazer for cooler moments, and white chunky low-top sneakers. The jewelry is small on purpose: one gold pendant, small gold hoops, and a sand leather tote. The part people underestimate is grooming, since a slicked low bun and fresh skin carry half the look. If tone-on-tone beige washes you out, swap the tank for white and keep the rest. Coffee runs and relaxed office days.
2. Old Money Aesthetic Outfit

The old money aesthetic lives or dies on fit and fabric, not on any single item. A cream silk blouse with the collar open, tucked into high-waisted navy trousers with a pressed crease. A camel cashmere crewneck draped over the shoulders. Brown penny loafers, a thin gold watch, pearl studs and a structured cognac crossbody. No visible logos anywhere. If the trousers pull at the hip or the blouse gapes at the buttons, the whole thing reads cheap, so I'd spend on tailoring before anything else. Museums and nice brunches.
3. Cottagecore Aesthetic Outfit

Cottagecore is the easiest aesthetic to overdo. A floral midi in muted sage and dusty rose with a smocked bodice and puffed elbow sleeves is the anchor; the smocking stretches, so it fits a wider range of busts than a fitted bodice would. A cream crochet cardigan adds texture. Tan strappy flat sandals, a wide-brim straw hat and a rattan crossbody. Keep jewelry tiny, a thin chain with a small flower pendant. I'd pick either the hat or the basket bag for town, not both. Farmers' markets and picnics.
4. Dark Academia Aesthetic Outfit

Dark academia works because it's built on real tailoring: a cream turtleneck under a charcoal tweed blazer with elbow patches, and a black pleated midi skirt just below the knee. Black opaque tights and chunky lace-up leather boots. A brown leather satchel worn across the body, tortoiseshell round glasses, a signet ring and a plain chain. Tweed is warm and scratchy, so a turtleneck between it and your skin matters. Stiff new boots need breaking in before a long day. Bookshops, lectures, cold fall days.
5. Y2K Aesthetic Outfit

The Y2K aesthetic is the one where the accessories do most of the talking. Start with a baby blue metallic baby tee with a small butterfly, low-rise light-wash flares that graze the floor, a cropped black zip hoodie and chunky white platforms. Then the details: butterfly clips, a rhinestone choker, a tiny silver shoulder bag and oval tinted sunglasses. Low-rise jeans don't suit every torso, and that's fine. A mid-rise flare keeps the look and is more comfortable when you sit. Festivals and throwback parties.
6. Minimalist Aesthetic Outfit

Minimalism leaves nowhere to hide, so fabric quality is everything. A black sleeveless high-neck knit, close-fitting but not tight, tucked into cream wide-leg tailored trousers that skim the floor over black pointed leather mules. An unlined black single-breasted wool coat worn open. A matte black belt with a small gold buckle and a sculptural black shoulder bag. Two colors only. I'd check the trousers for pilling and the knit for shine at the seams, because those flaws show far more on plain pieces than on prints. Galleries and creative offices.
7. Soft Girl Aesthetic Outfit

Soft girl style is pastel and a little sweet. A lavender oversized cardigan with sleeves slightly too long, open over a white cropped baby tee, with a light pink pleated tennis skirt high on the waist. White chunky platform sneakers. A pastel claw clip for a half-up style, pink heart drop earrings and a lavender plush mini bag. Pastels near the face suit cool and light complexions best; if lavender makes you look tired, wear it on the skirt and keep white near the face. Casual meetups and study afternoons.
8. Streetwear Aesthetic Outfit

Streetwear now leans on proportion more than branding. An oversized washed-black graphic tee with an abstract print, half-tucked into olive cargo parachute pants that pool slightly over the shoes. A boxy black bomber with matte hardware. Cream and gray chunky dad sneakers, a low black cap, a silver chain and a slouchy black leather crossbody. The pooling should rest on the sneaker, not drag under the heel, or you'll ruin the hems in a week. Weekend markets and city days with friends.
9. Balletcore Aesthetic Outfit

Balletcore borrows from the rehearsal room, and the pieces are softer than they look on a dancer. A blush wrap cardigan with ribbed trim over a fitted white tank bodysuit, and a high-waisted midi tulle skirt in pale pink just below the knee. Pink satin flats with sheer lace-trim ankle socks. A thin satin ribbon at the nape, pearl drops and a small white crossbody. Satin flats have almost no sole support, so I'd keep this for brunch and museum afternoons, not a day on foot.
10. Coastal Grandmother Aesthetic Outfit

Coastal grandmother style is linen, rolled sleeves and no fuss. A white oversized linen button-up, untucked over cream wide-leg linen trousers, with an oatmeal cashmere crewneck tied over the shoulders. Tan leather slides and a large straw tote. Accessories stay minimal: a rope bracelet, oval tortoiseshell sunglasses and a single pearl on a fine chain. White on cream needs the two shades to be close; a bright white shirt against a yellowish cream can look mismatched. Weekend getaways and slow mornings by the water.
11. Preppy Aesthetic Outfit

Preppy dressing is all about neat layers. A white cotton crewneck over a crisp light blue Oxford, with the collar and cuffs showing, and a navy and burgundy plaid pleated mini. Brown leather knee-high riding boots and navy opaque tights for cold days. A pearl headband, a small silver watch and a structured black satchel. The Oxford needs to fit at the shoulder or the layers bunch under the sweater. I'd size the sweater one up so the shirt underneath lies flat. Campus visits, family brunches and fall outings.
12. Gorpcore Aesthetic Outfit

Gorpcore takes hiking gear and wears it in town. A cream half-zip fleece over a white cropped tank, black wide-leg cargo pants with big utility pockets, and a sage quilted puffer vest for warmth without sleeves. On the feet, trail-inspired beige and gum-sole hiking sneakers with thick white crew socks pulled up. A black nylon belt bag worn crossbody and sporty tinted sunglasses. Fleece pills where a bag strap rubs, so the belt bag across the chest is kinder to it than a shoulder bag. Long city walks and coffee after a hike.
13. Light Academia Aesthetic Outfit

Light academia is dark academia's warmer sibling, and the color swap changes everything. A cream linen blouse with the collar open, tucked into high-waisted camel trousers with a relaxed straight leg, and a beige knit vest layered over it. Tan loafer flats and a woven brown leather belt. Gold wireframe glasses, a vintage locket and a canvas tote. All warm neutrals, so if you have a cool skin tone, I'd add a crisp white near the face instead of cream. Libraries, café writing sessions and sunny afternoons.
14. Baddie Aesthetic Outfit

The baddie aesthetic is built on contrast: something body-hugging under something sharp. A nude bodycon midi with a square neckline under an oversized black faux leather blazer. Clear-strap stilettos, big black square sunglasses, chunky gold hoops, layered gold chains and a black patent mini bag. A slick high ponytail and a glossy nude lip. Bodycon shows every seam underneath, so I'd plan smooth, laser-cut underwear first. Clear-strap heels can rub, so test them for an hour at home. Rooftop dinners and birthday nights.
15. Barbiecore Aesthetic Outfit

Barbiecore commits to one color completely. A hot pink structured A-line mini with soft puff sleeves, a matching cropped pink blazer and white patent platform heels for contrast. Pink heart-shaped sunglasses, a crystal-trimmed pink mini bag and chunky silver hoops. Head-to-toe hot pink is easier when every pink matches, since two slightly different pinks look like a mistake. Buy the dress and blazer together if you can. Bachelorette parties, themed events and birthday dinners.
16. Grunge Aesthetic Outfit

Grunge looks careless but still needs editing. A slightly oversized black band tee with a faded graphic, an open red and black buffalo plaid flannel, ripped black skinny jeans and black leather combat boots with silver eyelets. A slouchy black beanie, a silver chain choker, a worn black leather backpack and stacked dark silver rings. Smudged black liner. Ripped knees tear further every time you kneel, so I'd pick jeans with a back-patch or reinforced rips. Live shows and warehouse hangouts with a 90s feel.
17. Boho Aesthetic Outfit

Boho in this list is the full festival version, so it's worth knowing which pieces to drop for everyday wear. A cream embroidered peasant blouse with a deep V and billowy three-quarter sleeves, loosely tucked into a rust tiered maxi skirt with a small paisley and ruffled hem. An olive fringed kimono over the top, tan suede lace-up ankle boots, gold coin necklaces, turquoise and silver rings and a suede tassel crossbody. For a normal day, I'd lose the kimono and hat. Outdoor concerts and markets.
18. Coquette Aesthetic Outfit

The coquette aesthetic is all about small feminine details. A white square-neck cropped top with short puff sleeves and lace trim, and a dusty pink satin A-line mini. Pink bow ballet flats with a pearl at the toe. A black velvet ribbon choker, small pearl drops and a pearl-trimmed white mini bag in the hand. Satin minis show every crease after you sit, so I'd steam just before leaving. Bows multiply fast; three is usually plenty. Afternoon tea, showers and garden parties.
19. Witchcore Aesthetic Outfit

Witchcore is dark and layered, and velvet does most of the work. A black bell-sleeve top with sheer panels tucked into a floor-length black velvet skirt with a side slit, and a burgundy velvet cloak-style cardigan on top. Black lace-up Victorian ankle boots with a low block heel. Silver moon-phase necklaces, a crystal pendant, antique silver rings and a velvet pouch bag on a long cord. Velvet crushes where you sit, so hang it after wearing and steam from the inside. Fall markets and evening book events.
20. Royalcore Aesthetic Outfit

Royalcore is the most formal look here, and it's really occasionwear. A powder blue satin midi with a corset-style lace-up bodice, puffed three-quarter sleeves and an empire waist. Ivory lace-up heels with ribbon ties. A pearl and crystal hair comb in a low updo, pearl drops, satin elbow gloves and a small ivory bag with a gold clasp. Ribbon-tie heels slip down the ankle over an evening, so a dab of clear grip tape helps. Empire waists suit most shapes. Weddings, formal garden parties and themed events.
Ten Pieces That Cross Several of These Styles
If you like several aesthetics and don't want twenty separate wardrobes, look for pieces that show up in more than one. These are the ones I keep coming back to.
- A cream knit: clean girl, light academia, coastal and cottagecore.
- A tailored blazer in black or charcoal: minimalist, dark academia, baddie and preppy.
- High-waisted wide-leg trousers: clean girl, old money, minimalist and light academia.
- A pleated skirt: preppy, dark academia and soft girl, depending on color.
- Brown leather loafers: old money, preppy and both academia styles.
- Lace-up leather boots: dark academia, grunge and witchcore.
- A white fitted tank: almost all of them.
- Small gold hoops and pearl studs: they suit every soft or classic look here.
- A cardigan in a soft color: soft girl, balletcore and cottagecore.
- A structured leather crossbody: works across half the outfits on this list.
Buy the piece that serves the most styles you like before buying the one-look statement items. It stretches the budget and gives you outfits that look like a person rather than a category.
Before you buy any crossover piece, check it in daylight against two things you already own. If the color only works with the new outfit you have in mind, it isn't really a crossover piece. Neutrals with a slight warmth, like cream, camel and soft brown, tend to bridge the most styles.
Two or Three Styles Are Enough to Start
Each of these styles is a set of choices about color, silhouette and texture, and once you can see them that way, you can borrow from more than one. A clean girl base with one coquette bow; a dark academia blazer over a grunge tee. Adapt every outfit to your body, your budget and the weather where you live. Trends move on quickly, but learning why a look works stays useful. Start with the two or three outfits above that felt most like you, and wear them until they stop feeling like a theme.
