Grunge began as a refusal to dress up. It came out of the Seattle music scene of the late 1980s and early 90s, and it turned thrift-store flannel, ripped denim and scuffed combat boots into a look the whole world copied. It still works today because it's built on clothes most people already own or can find secondhand for very little. Below are forty outfits, from a full Kurt Cobain tribute to a softer version with a slip dress and chunky boots. With each one I've added what I look for on the rail and how I'd wear it now, because the difference between grunge and a costume is in the fabric, the fit and the wear on the pieces.

Thrifting Flannel and Band Tees Worth Keeping
Almost every look below starts in a secondhand shop, and that's where most of the character comes from. A new flannel printed to look faded never moves the way an old one does. When I shop the rails for this style, I go through a short checklist before anything goes in the basket.
- Flannel: check the label for cotton or wool. Acrylic flannel pills fast and feels plasticky; brushed cotton gets softer with every wash.
- Rub the fabric between your fingers. Real flannel has a fuzzy nap on at least one side.
- Look at the underarms, collar and cuffs in good light. Fading is good, but yellowed stains and thin, shiny cuffs usually mean the shirt is near the end.
- Band tees: older shirts often have a single line of stitching at the sleeve and bottom hems, and the print feels cracked and flat rather than thick and rubbery.
- Shop the men's section for flannel and tees. The cuts are boxier and longer, which is the shape you want.
Wash thrifted pieces before wearing, in cold water, inside out. Cracked prints survive that much better than a hot cycle, and the dryer is where most old tees shrink and lose their drape.
1. Oversized Flannel Over Band Tee And Ripped Jeans

The oversized flannel is where grunge starts. I look for a faded red-and-black check, worn open over a vintage band tee with a cracked print, with black ripped skinny jeans and broken-in black combat boots with scuffed toes. Roll the sleeves to the elbow, then add a silver chain, a few rings and a black beanie pulled low. Size up by two in a men's flannel rather than buying one cut oversized; the shoulder seam drops halfway down your arm and that slump is the whole point. Hair goes messy and a little in your eyes, as if you'd borrowed it all from a 1993 garage band.
2. Slip Dress Over White Tee With Chunky Platform Boots

This 90s grunge classic is fragile and tough at once. A white baby tee goes under a loose black silky slip dress, so the tee shows at the neckline and arms. Chunky black platform boots give the dress some stomp. A black velvet choker and layered silver necklaces, hair air-dried into an uneven wave, and a beat-up denim jacket over one arm or a vintage leather backpack. The tee has to be genuinely fitted, a baby tee and not a regular one, or it bunches under the slip and the layers look accidental. Coffee runs or a basement show.
3. Leather Jacket With Gray Hoodie And Distressed Denim Shorts

A slouchy gray hoodie under a black leather biker jacket with some real wear on it is a mix of soft and heavy that I keep coming back to. Size the hoodie up one or two so it bunches at the wrists and hips. Light-wash cutoffs with jagged hems over black fishnets, black combat boots, layered silver chain chokers and a few statement rings. Before buying the jacket, put it on over a hoodie: plenty of fitted biker jackets won't close or even move at the shoulder with a fleece layer inside. Dark smudged liner and a messy ponytail or space buns finish it.
4. Plaid Mini Skirt With Vintage Band Tee And Fishnet Tights

A pleated plaid mini in red, green or navy is the anchor. Tuck a faded vintage band tee loosely into the waistband so some fabric hangs over the front, whether that's a famous Seattle band or a local act nobody's heard of. Black fishnets run into chunky lace-up boots with a slight platform, and a flannel shirt tied at the waist adds texture. A black beanie, a cheap chain belt worn low and a leather crossbody. Pleated minis ride up when you sit, so I'd wear bike shorts underneath if the skirt sits much above mid-thigh. Smudged winged liner and a berry lip.
5. Oversized Knit Sweater And High-Waisted Plaid Trousers

A chunky charcoal or olive knit that hangs off one shoulder with high-waisted plaid trousers in dark green or burgundy reads like academia gone wrong. Tuck just the front hem to keep the waist visible, since that big sweater would otherwise swallow the trousers. Heavy black loafers or lug-sole boots, thin silver hoops and a dark lip. Roll the cuffs so only your fingertips show. With a very chunky knit, I check that the trousers have enough structure, a wool blend or a firm cotton, to hold their line against all that volume. Cool fall days, and a look straight out of an old late-night music video show.
6. Cropped Tank Top Under Open Flannel With Baggy Cargo Pants

A ribbed black cropped tank shows a sliver of midriff under an open oversized flannel in faded blue and black. Below, olive or black baggy cargos sit low on the hips with a canvas belt, and the hem puddles a little over beat-up canvas high-tops or dirty white sneakers. Thread a chain through a belt loop and stack a few beaded bracelets. Baggy cargos are the place to watch the rise: if they sit too low and too loose, every step drags them down, so I always pick a pair with a belt that actually holds. Minimal makeup, blurred lip tint, undone hair. It works because you look like you didn't care.
7. Distressed Denim Jacket Over Graphic Tee And Black Skinny Jeans

A cropped vintage denim jacket with frayed hems, a missing button or two and a faded wash gives the structure. Under it, a black band tee stretched out a little at the collar, then black skinny jeans with shredded knees and a few safety-pin repairs. Thick-soled combat boots, a chain-trimmed belt, a messy top knot and a dark lip. Enamel pins on the collar and a canvas messenger across the body. Pins leave small holes in denim, which is fine on a jacket that's meant to look lived-in, but I'd keep them away from the thin fabric near the buttonholes, where they tear through fastest.
8. Baby Doll Dress Worn Over Torn Tights With Ankle Boots

A short black or deep floral babydoll dress with a little puff at the sleeve plays sweet against dark. Underneath, black tights ripped on purpose at the thigh and shin, and black leather ankle boots with a block heel and silver hardware. A men's flannel hangs off your shoulders or ties at the waist. A velvet choker, smudged eyes and a soft wave. To rip tights so they run where you want them, I nick them with small scissors and then stretch the hole by hand; a clear nail varnish dot at the end of each ladder stops it running into the shoe. Night out, zero effort.
9. Corduroy Overalls Layered Over Long-Sleeve Stripe Top

Loose black or dark brown corduroy overalls bring instant 90s nostalgia, worn with one strap undone. Underneath, a black-and-white striped long-sleeve thermal with thumb holes at the cuffs. Platform canvas sneakers or beat-up skate shoes, with the overall hems rolled once or twice to show the sole. A beanie, a simple chain and a canvas backpack. Corduroy wears smooth at the knee and seat over time, which looks right here; just turn it inside out to wash so the ribs don't flatten all over. It's the uniform of an art-school kid flipping through record crates on a Saturday.
10. Mesh Long-Sleeve Top Under Black Slip Dress With Thigh-Highs

For a modern gothic-grunge twist, start with a sheer black mesh long-sleeve with a high neck and put a black satin mini slip dress over it, so the mesh sleeves become part of the outfit. Black thigh-high socks or sheer black stockings meet chunky platform loafers or creepers. A wide velvet choker and several silver chains. A dark lip and tousled hair keep it moody without tipping into costume. Mesh tops vary a lot in how see-through they are, so I check under bright light and add a black bralette when needed. It goes from a night concert to a late diner without looking out of place.
11. Vintage Flannel Tied At Waist Over White Tank And Distressed Jeans

Sometimes the simplest version hits hardest. A clean white ribbed tank tucked into heavily distressed light-wash straight-leg jeans with frayed hems, a worn red-and-black flannel tied at the waist with the sleeves hanging, beat-up black combat boots and silver rings. Knees show through the rips, and hair looks like you've just got up. It's the early-90s Cobain look at its rawest. The white tank is the one piece I'd buy new and keep bright, because against all that wear it's what makes the outfit look intentional. A dark pencil smudged along the waterline is enough makeup.
12. Long-Sleeve Thermal Under Black Band Tee With Cuffed Straight Jeans

A white waffle-knit thermal under a black short-sleeve band tee is grunge layering at its most basic. Tuck both loosely into medium-wash straight-leg jeans with a slim cuff above the ankle, and go heavy on the boots: tall lace-up combats or lug-sole Chelsea boots. A black grommet belt and chain bracelets. A loose low bun and barely any makeup let the textures carry it. I make sure the thermal is a little longer than the tee at the hem and sleeve; if it's shorter, the waffle disappears and the layering trick stops working. All the interest comes from the thermal peeking out at collar, cuff and hem.
13. Black Leather Blazer Over Plaid Mini Skirt And Combat Boots

Swap the denim jacket for an oversized black leather blazer that looks borrowed from the menswear rail. A plain gray crewneck tee keeps the attention on the blazer's sheen and boxy shape, with a dark green plaid mini, black sheer tights and lace-up combat boots. A dark lip, a simple chain and a small black crossbody. Leather blazers in a boxy cut look best when the sleeves end just past the wrist bone; too long and it looks like a costume. It makes grunge dressy enough for dinner or a gallery opening while keeping the raw edge.
14. Oversized Cardigan Over Crochet Top And Flared Jeans

This is grunge at its coziest. A huge slouchy knit cardigan in oatmeal or heathered gray, the kind that feels like a thrifted blanket, over a black crochet or lace-trim cami. Flared jeans with a raw hem cover chunky platform boots. A wide-brimmed felt hat and layered silver pendants push it toward a witchy, bohemian side. The sleeves should come past your knuckles. Big open-knit cardigans stretch out on a hanger, so I fold mine flat in a drawer. Fall coffee dates, record shopping or long walks when the leaves are turning.
15. Plaid Blazer Over White Tee And Black Faux-Leather Pants

A slouchy plaid blazer in brown, tan and rust checks, over a crisp white tee that peeks out at the hem, with black faux-leather skinny pants for a slick contrast. Pointed black ankle boots with a block heel sharpen the leg. A plain black belt, dark sunglasses and a structured black bag give you a grown-up version that still remembers where it came from. Keep jewelry light and hair in a sleek low ponytail. Faux leather doesn't breathe, so I'd save these pants for cooler days. The result is an off-duty look from someone who still raids vintage shops on weekends.
16. Ripped Denim Cutoffs Over Black Tights With Oversized Hoodie

A massively oversized black hoodie with a faded graphic carries the whole top half. Light-wash cutoffs fray at the hem over opaque black tights, and heavy combat boots balance all that slouch. Thread a worn brown leather belt through the shorts and tuck the front of the hoodie into it for a little shape. A black beanie and silver hoops. Opaque tights at a heavier denier last much longer under rough denim cutoffs, which wear sheer tights through at the inner thigh quickly. It's the outfit for days you want zero effort and still look cool.
17. Striped Long-Sleeve Top Under Black Mini Pinafore Dress

A black cotton pinafore with thin straps and a trapeze shape goes over a black-and-white striped long-sleeve top. Sheer black tights, chunky loafers or platform Mary Janes, a dark berry lip, a velvet choker and a small leather backpack. The stripes are a quiet nod to 90s alt-rock. I like a trapeze pinafore over a fitted top, because the swing of the dress needs a slim layer underneath to look deliberate. Hair down with a soft wave. A campus study session or a Saturday market walk with coffee in hand.
18. Acid-Wash Denim Jacket With Graphic Tee And Leopard Mini Skirt

Grunge with a little glam defiance. An oversized acid-wash denim jacket hangs open over a faded graphic tee tucked into a leopard mini skirt, with black opaque tights and platform combat boots to toughen the print. A black studded belt and layered silver chains pull it together. When I mix leopard into grunge, I keep every other piece black or faded so the print is the only loud thing; two busy items and it loses the edge. Smudged liner and messy hair keep it in grunge territory, and you can still stand in the front row.
19. Black Biker Jacket Over Midi Slip Skirt And Band Tee

A cropped black leather biker jacket with silver zips opens over a vintage band tee in a faded charcoal wash. Below, a silky black midi slip skirt that falls almost to the ankle, with platform combat boots to break up the softness, a thin black leather belt and small silver hoops. Satin, leather and soft old cotton together make a high-low mix you can wear endlessly. Check the skirt length against the boot: you want a gap of a few centimeters between hem and boot top, or the skirt catches on the laces with every step. Night concerts, museum visits, anywhere.
20. Layered Flannel Shirts Over Faded Black Jeans And Work Boots

Double the flannel. Start with a darker plaid shirt buttoned up, then put a lighter, oversized flannel over it completely open. Use two different patterns, say one mostly black and gray and the other red and green. Tuck both loosely into faded black jeans with a slightly baggy fit, and finish with heavy brown leather work boots. Roll the outer sleeves and add a beanie. Two flannels are warm, so I'd pick a lighter-weight shirt for the inner layer or you'll overheat indoors. Pacific Northwest grunge at its purest.
21. Black Sweater Vest Over Collared Shirt With Cuffed Jeans

A black knit sweater vest over a crisp white button-down is preppy clothing roughed up by grunge. Leave the collar open and a bit messy. Medium-wash straight-leg jeans with a wide cuff sit over chunky black leather loafers or combat boots. Thin wire-rim glasses, a silver chain and a canvas tote. A low ponytail and a bare face. I'd choose a vest a size larger than you'd wear for a preppy look, so it hangs loose and the shirt tails show at the hem. Structure on top that still feels borrowed and alternative.
22. Faded Denim Overalls Over Striped Tee With Bucket Hat

Loose light-wash denim overalls with one buckle hanging open, over a fitted black-and-white striped long-sleeve tee. Classic black canvas high-tops that have been scuffed and loved. A black bucket hat brings a hip-hop crossover that was everywhere in the 90s. A beaded choker and a small backpack. With overalls, I check that the bib doesn't sit too low; if it slides below the bust, take the straps up a notch or the shape droops. Outdoor flea markets and lazy Sundays, like a character in an early music video.
23. Dark Floral Midi Dress Under Leather Jacket With Black Boots

A dark floral midi, moody roses or tiny vintage blooms on black, is the feminine piece grunge loves to rough up. Throw a black leather moto jacket over it with the sleeves pushed up, then add opaque black tights and thick-soled lace-up boots for weight. A smoky eye and a loose updo balance the romance and the rebellion. A rayon or viscose floral clings to tights, so I'd add a slip or anti-static spray before leaving the house. Chilly evenings and gallery events, proof that grunge can handle a dress without losing its edge.
24. Safety-Pin Denim Vest Over Mesh Top And Plaid Pants

A DIY bleached denim vest covered in enamel pins, safety pins and a few patches is the centerpiece, over a black mesh top that shows a little skin. Slim red plaid trousers bring loud pattern, and black platform boots with silver chains lean into the punk-grunge crossover. A smoky eye and messy waves. If you bleach a vest yourself, I'd do it outdoors in a diluted mix and rinse thoroughly, because leftover bleach keeps weakening the cotton and the fabric tears later. Made for an underground show where you plan to be front and center.
25. Oversized Black Turtleneck With Low-Rise Baggy Cargos

A thick, oversized black turtleneck that pools at the neck and hangs past the hips sets a dark base. Low-rise olive or tan cargos with plenty of pockets sit relaxed and puddle a little over chunky sneakers or platform canvas shoes. A black grommet belt and a wallet chain add metal, and silver hoops with a matte complexion keep the focus on shape. This is grunge without pattern or graphics, just heavy texture and proportion. A long turtleneck over low-rise trousers can make the legs look short, so I'd tuck one side in loosely to show where the waist is.
26. Graphic Tee Dressed As A Mini With Thigh-High Socks

An oversized vintage band tee that falls to mid-thigh, belted at the waist, becomes a makeshift mini dress. Black ribbed thigh-high socks meet chunky black platform boots with silver eyelets. A wide black choker, a scatter of silver rings and a flannel tied at the waist for another layer. Loose waves and a dark lip. Before you belt a tee as a dress, bend over in front of a mirror; if it's not long enough to cover you, add shorts or wear it over a mini. It's the cheapest outfit in the list and one of the boldest.
27. Vinyl Mini Skirt Paired With Cropped Hoodie And Fishnets

A black vinyl mini with a slight A-line gives instant grunge texture with its gloss. Pair it with a cropped black hoodie that ends just above the waistband and black fishnet stockings. Chunky platform boots and a silver chain belt. Keep the makeup heavy on the eyes with a soft smoky blend. Vinyl doesn't stretch and creases at the hip when you sit, so I size it for comfort seated rather than standing. It leans modern alt, with a bit of rave and punk, but proportion and attitude keep it grunge.
28. Knit Beanie And Layered Tanks Under Open-Knit Sweater

Two racerback tanks layered, one white and one black, under an open-knit black sweater with a loose, droopy gauge so the tanks show through. Ripped black jeans, chunky skate sneakers, a black beanie pulled low and a few thin chains. Open knits snag on rings and bag zips, so I wear this one with minimal jewelry on the hands. Cozy afternoon grunge for hanging at a friend's place, walking the dog or grabbing boba. The straps, the open knit and the beanie together show you care about texture without making a fuss.
29. Biker Shorts Under Oversized Plaid Shirt With Thigh-Highs

An extra-large plaid shirt worn as a tunic over black biker shorts gives you grunge that still shows some leg in cooler weather. Thick black thigh-high socks and heavy combat boots lengthen the line. A black leather baseball cap and a studded crossbody bring it up to date. Smudged liner and a neutral lip. The shirt needs to reach at least mid-thigh to work as a tunic, and I'd button it one lower than usual at the collar so it reads as a dress, not a shirt you forgot to finish. Low effort, big result, very streetwear.
30. Cropped Leather Jacket Over Waist-Tie Flannel And Wide-Leg Jeans

A cropped black leather jacket that ends at the natural waist sits above a flannel tied around the hips. Underneath, a plain white tank tucks into very wide-leg black jeans that skim the ground, with pointed black boots keeping the bottom sleek against all that volume. Silver chains and dark sunglasses. Wide-leg jeans this long have to be hemmed for the boot heel, or the back drags and frays through on pavement within weeks. Short tough leather over long flowing denim looks nostalgic and current at once.
31. Mismatched Plaid Skirt With Oversized Band Tee And Creepers

Pick a skirt that clashes two plaids on purpose, perhaps green tartan on the front and red buffalo check on the back. Tuck in a super-sized vintage band tee and let it blouse over the waistband. Black tights and creepers, the flat shoes with the stacked platform sole, anchor the bottom. A dog-chain necklace and several ear piercings push the alt side. When clashing plaids, I keep at least one color shared between the two, a common red or green, so the clash looks chosen. For the maximalist who thinks more pattern and texture are always the answer.
32. Oversized Varsity Jacket Over Ripped Jeans And Platform Sneakers

Thrift a vintage varsity jacket with leather sleeves and striped ribbing, even better if it carries someone else's name or team. A plain white tee and very ripped black skinny jeans stop it looking like a costume, and chunky dad-style platform sneakers bring it up to date. A black cap and stacked silver chains. Old varsity jackets often have dry, cracked leather sleeves; I check the elbows and cuffs first, and a leather conditioner brings softer ones back. Game-day clothes for a sport you don't play, and that mismatch is the point.
33. Black Overall Dress Over Lace Top With Glossy Lip

A black denim or canvas pinafore-style overall dress with chunky metal buckles goes over a delicate black lace long-sleeve top. Sheer black tights and platform loafers sit between girly and tomboy. A glossy dark berry lip and a soft smoky eye add a little polish to the rough edges. Hair in soft waves and a small leather backpack. Lace under heavy canvas wears at the shoulders where the straps rub, so I'd pick a lace top with a solid lining or a stretch-mesh base. Grunge meets romantic goth: sweet enough for brunch, dark enough for a late poetry reading.
34. Brown Corduroy Jacket With Light-Wash Jeans And Hiking Boots

A thrifted brown corduroy jacket with a shearling collar mixes 70s and 90s texture. Wear it over a plain white tank tucked into light-wash straight-leg jeans with some slouch, and finish with heavy beige hiking boots that look like you've just come off a trail. A thin red bandana knotted loosely at the neck and a worn leather backpack. Shearling collars on old jackets can mat flat; I brush them gently with a wire pet brush to lift the pile. Grunge at its most practical, clothes that look like they have stories in them.
35. Chain-Strapped Tank Over Flare-Leg Trousers And Pointed Boots

A black ribbed tank with thin silver chain straps puts a jewel-like detail against bare shoulders. High-waisted black flares lengthen the leg into a tall dark column, with pointed black leather boots with a small heel showing under the hem. A slim black choker and ear cuffs. Hair slicked into a low bun to contrast with all that fabric movement. Chain straps can pinch and leave marks, so I check they lie flat on the shoulder and don't twist. A darker, sleeker night version that keeps the undone attitude.
36. Layered Long-Sleeve Tees In Contrasting Colors With Cuffed Jeans

A white long-sleeve thermal as the base, a cropped black graphic tee on top, and a red long-sleeve tee peeking out at the hem as a deliberate block of color. The three sleeve layers at the wrist, white, black and red, are pure 90s. Mid-wash cuffed boyfriend jeans, scuffed black skate shoes, a black beanie and a backpack. With three layers, I'd keep each one thin, a fine jersey rather than heavy cotton, so the arms don't look stuffed. Nostalgic without looking like a costume, just good layered dressing.
37. Black Denim Maxi Skirt With Slit And Band Tee Knotted

A black denim maxi skirt with a front slit gives dramatic length and still lets you move. Knot a vintage band tee at the side waist so a sliver of midriff shows, then add thick-soled black combat boots to balance the length. A silver chain belt, dark sunglasses and a messy top knot. I check where the slit lands when I walk, not when I stand still; just above the knee is right, and higher than mid-thigh shows more than most people expect. Coverage and drama together, and freedom in an evening breeze.
38. White Racerback Tank With Camo Cargo Pants And Black Beanie

Olive camo cargos, baggy through the leg and cinched at the ankle, bring the military surplus side of grunge. A plain white ribbed racerback tank keeps the top clean. Black combat boots, a black beanie and a silver chain or two. Minimal makeup and bare nails let the pants carry it. Cinched ankle cuffs should sit right at the top of the boot; if they bunch inside the boot shaft, they rub. It runs on contrast: clean white against busy print, soft fabric against hard boots.
39. Sweatshirt Worn Under Pinafore Skirt With Ankle Socks And Loafers

A gray crewneck sweatshirt with a slightly worn neckline goes under a black pinafore skirt that ends just above the knee. White ribbed ankle socks folded down over black patent chunky loafers are unexpected and very 90s. A black leather mini backpack, small hoops and a berry lip tint. A thick sweatshirt under a pinafore can look bulky, so I'd choose a thinner, vintage-worn one over a new heavy fleece. Grunge for a study date or a coffee shop where you plan to stay for hours: comfortable and quietly cool.
40. All-Black Co-Ord Set With Silver Hardware And Smoky Eye

For a more pulled-together grunge, wear a matching black co-ord: an oversized cotton button-up shirt and relaxed wide-leg trousers, the shirt left open over a black bralette. Silver chains, chunky rings and a heavy silver buckle break up the black. Thick-soled black boots give it weight, and a smoky eye with clean skin adds polish against the slouchy tailoring. Matching black pieces can fade at different rates, so I wash both halves together every time. It's the grown-up grunge uniform: rebellious, comfortable and still able to hold a room without a word.
New Combat Boots Hurt for a Reason
Combat boots appear in more of these outfits than any other shoe, and the stiff leather that makes them last is the same thing that rubs your heels raw in the first weeks. I break new pairs in slowly instead of wearing them all day straight away.
- Wear them at home with thick socks for an hour or two at a time over a week or so.
- Bend and flex the toe area by hand, and rub a leather conditioner or wax into the creases where the boot folds.
- Put plasters on the back of the heel before you get a blister, not after.
- If your heel lifts as you walk, lace the top eyelets with a loop lock so the boot holds the ankle.
Once they're broken in, leave them scuffed. Grunge boots look better with wear, so I only clean off mud and condition the leather now and then to stop it cracking.
Ripped Denim That Survives the Wash
Knee rips grow every time you sit, kneel or wash the jeans, and after a few months a small tear can split right across the leg. To keep a rip the size you like, I stitch a few small stitches by hand at each end of the tear, or iron a denim patch onto the inside behind it so the threads have something to hold. Wash ripped jeans inside out on a gentle cycle, and skip the dryer if you can, because heat and tumbling pull loose threads out faster than anything else.
Messy Hair, Scuffed Boots, Your Own Rules
Grunge lasts because it doesn't ask for approval. A ripped band tee, a silk slip dress, a patched denim vest and a leather blazer have nothing in common except attitude, not price or trend. The look rewards honesty about who you are and layering without overthinking it. Mix thrift finds with a few pieces worth spending on, soft fabrics with heavy ones, pretty with purely practical. Let your hair be messy and your boots get scuffed. Build your own rotation from the outfits above, and wear each one like you wrote the soundtrack.
