Refreshing a spring wardrobe rarely means replacing it. Most of what I do as a wardrobe stylist is re-pairing what's already in the closet and adding two or three pieces that make the old ones feel current. This season's direction helps: mocha brown worn head to toe, softer tailoring, crochet, sheer skirts and silk scarves back in rotation. Each of the forty outfits below is a full look, and I've noted which pieces carry over from year to year and which are this season's flavor.

Sorting Last Spring's Clothes Before Buying Anything New
Before I let anyone shop for spring, we pull out every warm-weather piece and sort it. It takes an afternoon and usually shows that the wardrobe needs far less than expected.
- Try everything on. Spring clothes have spent months folded, and fit changes. Anything that pulls at the bust, gapes at the waist or sits too short goes in a tailor pile or a donate pile.
- Check fabric condition. Look for pilling at the underarms, yellowing on white cottons, stretched-out ribbing and stains that set over winter.
- Group by outfit, not by type. Lay out the pieces that already make a full look together. These are your starting outfits.
- List the gaps. You'll usually find one missing link, such as a light jacket, a neutral trouser or a shoe that works with dresses, that would turn several half-outfits into full ones.
Only the gap list goes shopping. The outfits below show what those gap pieces can do once they're paired with what you already own.
1. White wide-leg trousers and pastel blouse outfit

White wide-leg trousers are the piece I'd buy first if a spring wardrobe has none. They take any pastel blouse, lavender, butter or powder blue, and a front tuck keeps the waist visible. Low sneakers or nude pointed flats suit the long line. Buy a heavier weave so they stay opaque, and try them on with the underwear you actually own. For a cool evening, a trench over the shoulders finishes it.
2. Floral midi dress and trench coat outfit

A floral midi under a camel trench is practical and pretty, and this year the prints are larger and more painterly. Choose a dress with a defined waist, or add a thin belt, so the trench doesn't swallow the shape. White sneakers for the day; block-heel sandals and a pearl clip for a garden party. Large prints suit taller frames best; on a petite figure I'd scale down to a mid-size bloom.
3. Linen pants and cropped cardigan outfit

Linen pants in cream, camel or sage, with a cropped cardigan over a white cami, are an easy spring formula. The crop sits at the waistband, which keeps a wide leg from shortening you. Linen will crease the minute you sit; that's part of the fabric, not a fault. Woven sandals or ballet flats and a straw bag finish it. If you dislike wrinkles, a linen and cotton blend creases far less.
4. Mocha mousse monochrome outfit

Mocha Mousse was named a color of the year, and it suits monochrome dressing because it's soft enough to wear in one shade from top to bottom. Pair a mocha knit or silk blouse with matching trousers, then keep the fabric light, crepe or a linen blend, so brown doesn't feel wintry. A darker woven belt breaks the column. Mocha is kind to warm and olive skin; very cool, pale skin may prefer it worn away from the face.
5. Head-to-toe pink outfit

Head-to-toe powder pink works when the tones differ slightly. A blouse a shade lighter than the trousers or skirt, plus a change of texture, keeps it from looking like a costume. White leather accessories give the pink a clean edge. I keep jewelry silver and makeup soft. It's a good bridal shower outfit; for the office, swap one pink piece for cream.
6. Crochet matching set outfit

A crochet cardigan and tank set has strong texture, so the rest should be plain: light straight jeans or a linen midi. Wearing the cardigan backwards, buttons down your spine, gives a clean front and an unexpected back. Open stitches stretch and catch on jewelry and bag clasps, so I'd stick to beaded necklaces and a smooth suede bag. Crochet can sag if hung, so fold it in a drawer.
7. Relaxed blazer and wide-leg jeans outfit

Relaxed blazers have replaced stiff office tailoring for spring. An unlined linen or cotton blazer in beige, cream or a soft check over a rib tank, with medium wash wide-leg jeans, is the outfit I'd suggest for a creative office. The jeans can pool slightly at the ankle, but only over a flat or low block heel; over sneakers they drag. A silk scarf on the tote handle adds a little color.
8. Mary Jane heels and ankle socks outfit

Ankle socks with Mary Janes take a moment to get used to. White ribbed socks above a black or metallic strap, with a midi skirt in satin or cotton and a light crewneck on top, give a slightly retro, bookish look. The trick is the sock height: it should show a little above the strap, not climb the calf. Add a cropped trench when it's cool. Thick socks need a half size of room in the shoe, so try them together.
9. Sheer tulle skirt and fitted top outfit

A semi-sheer tulle midi is the easiest way into the sheer trend. Pair it with a fitted rib tank or slim long-sleeve top, tucked, so the volume stays below the waist. Tonal colors, ivory on ivory or blush with cream, look calm rather than costume-like. Flat ballet shoes and a basket bag suit the day; it also works as a spring wedding guest outfit. Tulle catches on velcro and rough fabrics, so keep it away from canvas bags with hook closures.
10. Plaid shirt and baggy jeans outfit

The ’90s grunge revival brings back the open plaid shirt over a fitted tank with baggy jeans. Choose a soft cotton flannel in muted browns, greens or blues. Raw-hem baggy jeans and chunky loafers suit it. Low-slung jeans aren't for everyone; if you prefer a higher waist, keep the shirt open so the tank and waistband show. A leather jacket covers cool mornings.
11. Track jacket and white maxi skirt outfit

An open track jacket over a tank with a white maxi skirt mixes sport and softness. It's surprising, and it works because the jacket's hard zip contrasts with the floaty skirt. White low sneakers continue the sporty theme; a structured bag keeps it neat. White maxi skirts need a slip or a thick weave to stay opaque in sun. Great for travel days and errands.
12. White blazer and trousers outfit

A white crepe suit is a smart buy because you'll wear the pieces apart far more than together. Wide-leg trousers and a matching blazer over a silk cami or white tank look celebratory. Crepe resists wrinkles better than linen, which matters in a white suit. Metallic shoes or a thin chain belt add shine. Expect to dry clean or spot clean with care; white shows everything.
13. Asymmetrical midi skirt and knit sweater outfit

An asymmetrical midi hem brings movement. Pair a lavender skirt with a cream knit, front-tucked to show the waist. Kitten heels or strappy sandals lengthen the leg; a pendant pulls attention up. Uneven hems need the shortest point to land in a flattering spot, ideally just below the knee, so check it in a full mirror. A patent or suede crossbody adds contrast.
14. Burgundy leather jacket and light-wash jeans outfit

Burgundy carries over from fall, and a burgundy leather jacket over a white tee with light straight jeans keeps a dark shade feeling spring. The wine color looks rich against pale denim. White sneakers or chunky loafers, gold hoops, a brown bag. Real leather needs breaking in at the elbows; vegan versions crack sooner at the folds. Worn open, it's comfortable on a mild day.
15. Navy and white stripe outfit

A navy striped long-sleeve tee tucked into high-waisted white straight-leg pants looks expensive because it's so simple. A tan belt and tan slides or espadrilles warm it up. Roll the sleeves once or twice. When the breeze picks up, a navy sweater over the shoulders adds a preppy layer. Make sure the stripes line up at the side seams; cheap striped tees often don't.
16. Fringed dress and ankle boots outfit

A fringed midi dress sways when you walk, which is the whole point. Choose tan, cream or soft black, and match the ankle boots to the dress so the leg line isn't cut. Suede fringe tangles, so I comb it gently with fingers after wearing and store the dress flat. Keep hair up and jewelry small. It's a fun pick for a spring concert or a birthday dinner.
17. Nightie dress and sneakers outfit

A nightie dress, cotton poplin or silk blend with lace trim or ribbon, looks romantic when grounded. White sneakers make it daytime; ballet flats make it a little smarter. A cardigan or oversized denim jacket adds structure and covers the thin straps. Some nightie dresses really are sheer, so check in daylight. A scarf in the hair finishes it.
18. Tank top and wide-leg trousers outfit

A tank top gets interesting with the right trousers. Choose ribbed or silk-blend in mocha, taupe or cream, tucked into high-waisted wide-leg trousers in a fluid fabric. A belt with an unusual buckle gives the eye a focal point. Strappy heels or kitten heels dress it up. For cooler moments, keep a blazer or light cardigan on hand. A silk tank shows sweat marks, so I choose ribbed cotton for warm days.
19. Knit co-ord set outfit

A knit set in sage, dusty blue or blush is three outfits for one purchase: together, the top with jeans, and the skirt with a white tee. That mileage is why I suggest sets to anyone refreshing on a budget. Clogs or flat sandals keep it casual. Check the knit for pilling at the seams before you buy; cheap blends pill fast. A contrasting textured bag adds depth.
20. Silk scarf with jeans and tee outfit

A silk scarf changes a plain white tee and straight jeans more than any other single addition. Fold a bold square into a triangle and tie it loosely at the neck, or knot it on a ponytail or bag handle. Ballet flats or low mules keep the rest calm. Real silk ties and holds a knot better than polyester, which slips. It's the cheapest refresh on this list.
21. Mint green monochrome outfit

Mint green and pistachio shades are this season's fresh pastels, and wearing them head to toe feels calm. Pair a mint shirt or knit with matching trousers or a midi skirt, in cotton, linen or a fine knit. Nude or white shoes keep the focus on color; gold jewelry warms it. Mint with a yellow cast suits warm skin; bluer mint suits cool undertones.
22. Button-up shirt open over a dress outfit

An oversized white or light-blue button-down worn open over a slip dress or slim tank dress adds a practical layer. Belt at the waist, roll the sleeves, and add flat sandals or white sneakers. When the breeze picks up, button the shirt; when the sun is out, take it off. A men's shirt in a size up often gives the best drape.
23. Denim midi dress outfit

Denim midi dresses are back, and a light or medium wash version is structured and breathable. Choose one with a waist tie or add a belt, since a straight denim dress can look boxy. On cooler days wear a thin white turtleneck or striped tee underneath. White sneakers or woven sandals work. Denim dresses soften after a few washes; a stiff new one relaxes with wear.
24. Pleated maxi skirt and fitted tank outfit

A pleated maxi in champagne, blush or pale blue is graceful in motion. Tuck a fitted tank or scoop-neck tee in so the volume sits below the waist. Flat sandals for the day, heels for evening. Pleated maxis can catch underfoot on stairs; hem them so they clear the shoe by about an inch. A small structured bag keeps proportions tidy.
25. Oversized blazer and shorts outfit

An oversized linen blazer with tailored shorts brings structure to a warm day. Wear a tank or light knit underneath and keep shorts high-waisted, ending mid-thigh or longer. Flat slides or low mules feel relaxed; a structured tote makes it grown-up. The blazer should be long enough to cover the top of the shorts, or the proportion looks odd.
26. Cardigan worn as top with matching skirt outfit

A cardigan buttoned as a top, nothing underneath, is the bold version of a twinset. Choose hip-length or cropped with a matching midi skirt in the same knit. Button it low enough to make a soft V and add a fine necklace. Gaping between buttons is the usual problem; a tiny hidden snap or a fashion tape strip fixes it. Pointed flats finish the look.
27. Polo shirt and linen shorts outfit

A polo shirt gets a spring refresh with soft linen shorts. Choose white, navy or a stripe in slim or relaxed fit, tucked into high-waisted linen shorts. Leather sandals or white sneakers, a woven belt and a simple watch. Pique cotton polos breathe better than jersey ones on a hot day. Good for tennis, golf or a picnic.
28. Slip dress and oversized shirt layer outfit

A silky midi slip dress with an oversized shirt knotted at the waist makes evening fabric work for daytime. Flat mules or strappy sandals and a slouchy hobo bag keep it relaxed. At sunset, drop the shirt, add heels and a clutch, and it's an evening outfit. Knot the shirt at the side rather than center front so it doesn't pull the slip off-line.
29. Wide-leg crop pants and structured top outfit

Wide-leg crop pants ending just above the ankle show off shoes, so make the shoes worth showing: sculptural heels or two-tone flats. Pair them with a structured top, a square-neck bodysuit or a puff-sleeve shirt. The crop works best when it reveals a little ankle; on very short legs I'd go full length instead, since the crop cuts the line. A chain-strap bag finishes it.
30. Animal print midi dress outfit

Animal print midi dresses in leopard, zebra or tonal snakeskin are loud enough on their own, so everything else stays quiet. Nude sandals, a plain clutch, minimal gold. On cooler days add a black or beige cardigan and ankle boots. Smaller prints read more refined; large-scale leopard is louder. A red lip completes it for a dinner date.
31. Bubble-hem dress outfit

Bubble-hem dresses are among the most playful shapes this spring. The rounded hem adds volume, so keep accessories small: studs, a slim bracelet, minimal sandals. Choose a solid pastel or a subtle floral. A bubble hem adds width at the hip and thigh; if that's not what you want, an A-line skirt gives movement without the extra volume.
32. Utility jacket and floral dress outfit

A khaki or olive utility jacket over a floral midi is the tough-and-soft pairing I like for unpredictable weather. Push the sleeves up; add combat or Chelsea boots. A woven crossbody keeps it soft. Check that the jacket ends at or above the hip so the dress's skirt can still swing.
33. Neutral tone-on-tone outfit

Tone-on-tone neutrals look expensive when the textures vary. A cream silk cami tucked into camel wide-leg trousers with an oatmeal cardigan mixes silk, wool and a smooth trouser weave. Nude or tan accessories stay in the family; mixed metals add shimmer. Keep the shade nearest your face the one that suits you best, as neutrals close to your skin color can flatten it.
34. Trench coat with jeans and tee outfit

A beige trench over a white tee and high-waisted straight jeans is a spring formula that comes back every year. Roll the sleeves, belt the jeans, add ballet flats or sneakers. On warm afternoons, drape the trench over your shoulders. Cotton gabardine trenches handle light rain; thin polyester versions don't breathe. If you only buy one coat for spring, it's this one.
35. Monochrome bold color outfit

If pastels feel too soft, go monochrome in a saturated color: cobalt blue or vivid rose. A cobalt blouse with matching trousers, or a magenta knit set. Keep accessories tonal; slightly darker shoes in the same family add depth. Strong color near the face shows up clearly in photos, so a sleek bun and simple makeup let the color lead.
36. Plaid maxi skirt and crop top outfit

A plaid maxi skirt in brown, green or muted red mixes grunge with polish. Pair it with a cropped cardigan or a baby tee ending just above the waistband. Chunky loafers or platforms anchor the long skirt; a suede bag adds texture. On a short frame, I'd pick a smaller plaid and a heel so the long skirt doesn't overwhelm. Good for vintage shopping or a coffee date.
37. Lace dress and ballet flats outfit

Lace dresses have moved from bridal to everyday. A knee-length or midi lace dress in white, cream or blush with satin or leather ballet flats stays soft. Add small pearls and a petite bag; nothing more. On cool days, layer a cropped cardigan or blazer. Lace can scratch, so check that the dress is lined, especially at the underarms.
38. Cream silk cami and tailored trousers outfit

A cream silk cami with tailored trousers in camel, mocha or charcoal is luxurious in its simplicity. Silk catches light and softens the structure of the trousers. Pointed mules or heeled sandals, a minimal watch, a structured bag. For warmth, drape a blazer or fine knit over the shoulders. Swap the tote for a slim clutch and it becomes an evening outfit.
39. White shirt with ruffle detail and wide-leg pants outfit

The classic white shirt gets new details this year: ruffles, peplums and ruching. A white blouse with a subtle ruffle tucked into high-waisted wide-leg pants in a pastel or neutral looks professional with personality. Add a slim belt; pointed flats or low block heels. Keep ruffles small at the shoulder if you're broad there, and place them at the cuff or hem instead.
40. Matching two-piece set and platform sandals outfit

A matching two-piece set, top and skirt or top and pants, is a quick decision. Choose a vibrant print or solid bold color. Platform sandals add a ’70s edge; oversized sunglasses and a woven bag suit a getaway. Keep jewelry minimal. Like any set, it pays off most when each half also works with pieces you already own.
Which of These Pieces Last Beyond One Season
Not every piece above deserves the same budget. I sort them into two groups when planning a refresh.
Worth spending on
A cotton gabardine trench, white wide-leg trousers, a well-cut blazer, straight-leg jeans and a silk cami appear in spring wardrobes year after year. Spend on fabric and fit here, because you'll wear them for many seasons and alter them if your size changes.
Buy cheaply or borrow
Bubble hems, track jackets over maxi skirts, fringe and the exact shade of the year are fun but tend to date quickly. Buy these at a lower price point, or find them secondhand, and wear them hard this spring.
Washing Linen, Crochet and Lace Without Ruining Them
Several of the textured pieces in this list are easy to damage in a regular wash. Linen can go in a gentle cycle in cool water and should come out while still slightly damp, which makes ironing much easier. Crochet and lace belong in a mesh laundry bag or a hand wash, then dry flat on a towel; hanging them wet stretches the stitches permanently. Silk and satin are best hand washed in cool water with a mild detergent, rolled in a towel to remove water, and never wrung out.
Two New Pieces Can Carry a Whole Season
A spring refresh works best when most of the outfit is already in your closet. White trousers, a trench, a striped tee and a slip dress carry year after year; mocha, mint, bubble hems and track jackets are this season's color and shape. Add two or three of those to what you own, mix textures, and you'll feel current without starting over.
