Scooby-Doo is one of the kindest themes to dress for, because every member of Mystery Inc. is basically a block of colour plus one or two signature pieces. Thrift-store clothes, things already in your closet and a few craft supplies get you most of the way there. The theme stretches from solo costumes and couples to families, kids, pets and big groups. Scooby, Shaggy, Velma, Daphne and Fred are the obvious picks, and the villains give you something less expected. An orange sweater, a purple dress, a green shirt, an ascot, square glasses or a pair of floppy dog ears does most of the identifying for you, so there's very little to actually construct. Below are 40 ways to do it, from the easy and comfortable to the dressier and the frankly silly.

Signature Pieces Worth Spending On
Every character in this list is recognised by a very small number of things. I put the budget there and thrift or borrow everything else.
- Scooby: the turquoise collar with the diamond tag, then the ears. Without the collar he's just a brown dog.
- Shaggy: the green shirt and the slouch. A crisp shirt or a neat haircut undoes him faster than the wrong shade of brown.
- Velma: the square glasses first, then the orange sweater. Get frames thick enough to see from across a room.
- Daphne: the green scarf against the purple. A purple dress alone reads as a party dress; the scarf and headband name her.
- Fred: the orange ascot. White sweaters and blue pants are everywhere, but the ascot isn't.
When people ask me where to save, it's usually the wig. A cheap wig brushed out, trimmed at the fringe and pinned properly looks better than a pricey one worn straight from the bag, and Shaggy, Fred and Daphne can all be done with your own hair if the colour is close.
1. Classic Scooby-Doo Costume

For the Great Dane himself, start with a brown hooded jumpsuit or a matching brown sweatshirt and joggers. Scooby's spots are few and irregular, so I cut a handful of uneven black felt shapes for the shoulders, back and legs and resist covering the whole suit; add too many and he starts to look like a Dalmatian. Removable fabric tape holds them for a night. A soft headband with floppy brown ears gives the silhouette, and a brown fabric tail goes at the back. The turquoise collar with a diamond-shaped 'SD' tag is what tells everyone which dog you are. Brown face makeup, a black nose and a few whisker dots keep him friendly. Brown sneakers or slipper-style shoes are fine for walking. An empty snack box or an oversized sandwich is the prop, and a wide-eyed, startled pose does the rest in photos.
2. DIY Humanized Scooby-Doo Costume

If you'd rather skip the bodysuit, build Scooby from ordinary brown clothes: a fitted brown T-shirt or sweater with brown jeans, leggings or wide-leg pants. Attach the black felt patches with safety pins or fashion tape so the clothes go straight back into your wardrobe afterwards; I pin from the inside so no metal shows. The turquoise choker with a gold diamond tag is the piece I'd never leave out, followed by floppy ears and a light brown tail. Loose brown waves or a short brown wig keep the colour story going. For makeup, warm brown shadow, a rounded black nose, a few whisker dots and a playful winged liner. Brown ankle boots or clean sneakers finish it, and a snack bag, a magnifying glass or a cardboard clue makes the character obvious without any store-bought suit.
3. Women’s Scooby-Doo Dress Costume

A brown skater dress is the comfortable way to be Scooby at a party. Pick a knee-length one with some swing, then put black felt spots across the sleeves, skirt and upper back. On a skater dress I tack the felt on with a few stitches, because the skirt moves constantly and tape peels at the edges by the end of the night. Add the turquoise collar necklace with its gold diamond tag, brown dog ears and a tail fixed at the waist. A brown bob wig or your own hair with soft volume works on top. Keep the makeup cute: bronze shadow, black liner, a painted puppy nose and tiny whisker dots. Brown opaque tights add warmth and coverage, and flat ankle boots keep you on your feet. A small snack-shaped purse or a light cardboard sandwich finishes the reference without getting in the way.
4. Kids Scooby-Doo Costume

For kids I keep Scooby soft and simple, because anything scratchy comes off by the second house. Start with a brown hoodie and matching sweatpants, then add black felt patches; felt is gentle on skin and doesn't stiffen the fabric. Sew or tape floppy ears onto the hood and fix a stuffed fabric tail to the waistband, short enough that it won't drag on porch steps. A turquoise ribbon collar with a light foam tag gives the essential pop of colour. Use child-safe face paint for a small nose and whisker dots, and keep it well away from the eyes. Brown sneakers need good grip and room for warm socks. A reusable treat bag decorated like a snack box is the prop, soft and easy for small hands to carry.
5. Classic Shaggy Costume

Shaggy is the easiest member of the gang to pull from a closet. Wear an oversized light green T-shirt with loose brown pants or straight-leg corduroys. Look for a V-neck if you can find one, since that's the neckline he's usually drawn with, though a crewneck still reads. Slightly rumpled clothes are right for him; a crisp, freshly ironed shirt looks wrong. Mess up medium-length brown hair on purpose, or wear a shaggy brown wig with uneven layers. A soft brown pencil can sketch faint stubble, with the rest of the face left natural. Brown sneakers, casual loafers or slip-ons are fine. Carry an oversized cardboard sandwich, a snack bag or a magnifying glass, and in photos, a startled face and a hunched running pose bring him to life.
6. Women’s Shaggy Costume

A women's Shaggy keeps the green and brown but gives them a fitted, modern shape. Pair a loose green cropped tee or a tucked knit top with high-waisted brown wide-leg pants, adding a brown belt if needed. The trick is stopping short of polished. I'd leave the top a little untucked on one side so it still feels like Shaggy and not just a smart outfit in his colours. Style a short brown wig with tousled layers, or rough your own hair up into messy waves. A few drawn stubble marks near the jaw are funny; softly smudged brown liner is the subtler route. Brown platform sneakers or flat boots stay comfortable all evening. Carry a big sandwich prop and clip a small cardboard clue to a crossbody bag.
7. Kids Shaggy Costume

When a child wants something simple with no mask and nothing bulky, Shaggy is the answer. Start with a roomy green T-shirt, layered over a thermal top on a cool night. Brown joggers or soft corduroys let them run and sit easily. A washable brown wig gives the messy hair, but plenty of kids refuse a wig after ten minutes, and their own tousled hair works just as well. A little child-safe brown makeup can suggest freckles or light stubble. Brown athletic shoes give support for trick-or-treating, and a light foam sandwich or a reusable snack bag is the prop. If a sibling or the family dog is going as Scooby, a matching turquoise detail on both ties the pair together.
8. Classic Velma Costume

Velma starts with an oversized orange turtleneck and a red pleated skirt that sits above or near the knee. Orange knee-high socks and dark red Mary Janes carry the colour down to the floor. A short auburn bob wig with straight bangs gives the hair, and thick black square glasses are the detail that matters most. Glasses slide when you laugh and look down, so I add a clear strap at the back for anyone who'll be moving around a lot. Keep makeup simple: matte skin, soft brown liner and a muted lip. A magnifying glass, a notebook or a folder labelled with a harmless clue makes the prop. Every piece can be thrifted and worn again after Halloween, and that sweater keeps you warm outside.
9. Plus Size Velma Costume

For a plus size Velma, comfort comes first and the orange-and-red palette does the rest. Choose a soft orange turtleneck with a relaxed fit and a red A-line or pleated skirt that sits comfortably at the natural waist. When I fit this one, I check the sweater length against the skirt: a turtleneck that ends right at the waistband rides up every time you raise an arm, so a slightly longer one worn loose over the skirt sits better. Add opaque orange knee socks or tights and supportive burgundy Mary Janes. A chin-length auburn bob wig frames the face, and oversized black glasses settle the question of who you are. Warm neutral makeup, subtle brown liner and a soft rose lip suit her. A light magnifying glass and a crossbody satchel hold your things. Stretch fabrics, hidden shorts and cushioned insoles make a long evening of parties or trick-or-treating much easier.
10. Glam Velma Costume

For a dressier Velma, keep her colours and change the textures. Tuck a fitted orange ribbed turtleneck into a burgundy faux-leather pleated skirt. Faux leather doesn't hold a pressed pleat, so I look for a skirt with the pleats stitched down at the top. Sheer orange tights or rust knee socks with glossy burgundy platform Mary Janes take it up a notch. Smooth the ends of an auburn bob wig, keep the bangs full and add large black square glasses. Bronze shadow, sharp liner, warm blush and a deep rose lip feel dressed up while staying fine for a public event. A jewelled magnifying glass or a small book-shaped bag is the accessory, and gold studs add shine without pulling focus. It suits indoor parties, photo sessions and a group of friends going together.
11. Kids Velma Costume

A child's Velma needs soft layers and accessories that stay put. Pair an orange mock-neck sweatshirt with a red pleated skort, which looks like a skirt but lets them climb and run. Orange knee socks over warm tights and burgundy sneakers or strap shoes go underneath. If a wig itches, skip it; temporary hair colour or a simple brown headband works fine. Pick light, nonprescription black glasses with rounded edges, and I'd buy them snug, since loose kids' costume glasses slide off on the first porch step. Minimal child-safe makeup, a few soft freckles and peach lip balm are enough. A foam magnifying glass and a small notebook finish the detective idea, and a red or orange jacket keeps her colour story intact on a chilly night.
12. Classic Daphne Costume

Daphne's look centres on a long-sleeve purple mini dress with a softly flared skirt. Add a light purple headband, a bright green neck scarf and lavender or pink opaque tights, then purple low-heeled boots you can actually walk in. A long red wig with volume at the crown and gently curled ends gives the hair, or sweep natural red hair back from the face. Long synthetic wigs tangle where they rub against a scarf, so I tie the knot slightly to one side and brush out the back of the wig once or twice during the evening. Lavender shadow, defined lashes, rosy cheeks and pink lipstick give a polished retro face. A small purple handbag holds a magnifying glass or a folded mystery map. Choose a dress with some stretch, and wear shorts underneath if you'd like.
13. Plus Size Daphne Costume

Daphne's purple and green look strong in a plus size costume. Choose a purple A-line dress or tunic with long sleeves and a hem that gives you the coverage you want. Tie a bright green scarf neatly at the neck and add lavender tights so the colour runs unbroken from hem to boot. Purple block-heel boots or cushioned ankle boots give height and stability. Wear a long red wig with a purple headband and loose curls at the ends. Plum liner, soft lilac shadow, pink blush and berry lipstick finish the face. A structured purple crossbody carries your essentials and counts as part of the costume. Before buying the dress, I raise both arms in it: one that pulls across the back when you reach will be uncomfortable all night.
14. 13 Ghosts Daphne Costume

This is Daphne's more adventurous outfit, a purple jumpsuit in place of the classic dress. Choose a long-sleeve jumpsuit with a defined waist and add a wide white belt to sharpen the shape. A soft lavender jacket or cropped overshirt goes on top for a cool evening, and a bright pink or lavender scarf keeps the palette right. Style long red hair with full volume, curled ends and a matching headband. Lavender shadow, clean black liner and a rosy lip suit the period. White or purple ankle boots finish it. Carry a small notebook, a flashlight prop or an illustrated mystery map rather than anything frightening. With any jumpsuit I check the bathroom logistics before committing, because a back zip you can't reach alone becomes a real problem at a party. Fewer people wear this version, which is half its appeal.
15. Kids Daphne Costume

A purple knit dress is the base for a kid's Daphne. Choose long sleeves and a stretchy waist, and pair it with lavender leggings, which survive a night outdoors far better than delicate tights. Tie a short green scarf in a loose, secure knot, or attach it with Velcro so it pulls away easily if it catches. A purple headband goes over a child-size red wig, or use washable red hair spray on the visible sections of natural hair. I spray it on outside with a towel around the shoulders, because it transfers onto collars and car seats. Keep makeup to pink lip balm and a touch of lavender shimmer. Purple sneakers or flat boots are safe footwear, and a small purple bag with a foam magnifying glass makes her ready for school or trick-or-treating.
16. Classic Fred Costume

Fred is clean-cut: a white long-sleeve sweater or polo-style top with a blue collar, tailored blue pants and a bright orange ascot tied loosely at the neck. The ascot is the piece people look for, and a square of orange fabric folded on the bias drapes far better than a stiff ribbon. A short blond wig with a neat side sweep gives the hair. Keep makeup natural, with a little matte powder if you want a flatter cartoon finish. Brown loafers or clean white sneakers work, depending on how formal you'd like him. A clipboard, a folded map or a bundle of soft cord hints at his love of building traps. A blue watch or a plain belt adds a bit of structure, and the whole outfit is easy to thrift and comfortable for a group event.
17. Women’s Fred Costume

The same colours work in a tailored, modern shape. Wear a fitted white sweater with a blue collar showing underneath, and add high-waisted blue flares or a blue A-line skirt. Tie a vivid orange scarf at the neck and keep it the strongest accent on the outfit. Style a short blond wig into a smooth side sweep, or pull natural blond hair into a polished low ponytail. Neutral makeup with defined brows, subtle liner and a peach lip suits him. Brown loafers, white ankle boots or comfortable platform sneakers finish it. A clipboard with a playful trap diagram and a small flashlight in a crossbody bag are the props. I press that blue collar flat before leaving the house, because a curling collar is the first thing that turns this from a character into just a sweater.
18. Kids Fred Costume

For a child's Fred, use flexible pieces that hint at the outfit without feeling stiff. Start with a white sweatshirt or long-sleeve polo over a blue collared shirt. Blue joggers or stretch chinos go below, and a soft orange scarf fastens at the neck with hidden Velcro, so nothing tightens if another kid tugs it. A short blond wig gives the hair, though brushed natural hair with temporary blond colour can also work. Skip makeup beyond a little powder or tinted lip balm. Brown sneakers and warm blue socks go underneath. A light clipboard with a hand-drawn maze or mystery map is a safe prop. It's comfortable enough for school and makes the most sense as part of a kids' Mystery Inc. group.
19. Scrappy-Doo Costume

Scrappy-Doo is small and full of bounce, and he translates into a playful brown dog costume for adults or kids. Wear a light brown hoodie with matching shorts, leggings or joggers. Darker brown felt ears go on the hood, with a short stuffed tail at the back. A bright blue collar with a gold diamond tag helps set him apart from Scooby. Warm brown face makeup, a small black nose and dotted whiskers keep his expression cheerful. Light brown sneakers or paw-shaped shoe covers finish the base. A foam sign with an eager, mystery-solving message, or padded gloves held up like tiny paws, gives him his attitude. A fitted shape and short ears are what separate him from a standard Scooby, so I keep both deliberately small.
20. Scooby-Dum Costume

Scooby-Dum is a less expected dog in the same brown family. Start with a pale brown or tan jumpsuit, or a hoodie with matching pants. Add floppy ears, a soft tail and a few subtle darker spots. The bright red cap over the ears is his most noticeable accessory; I cut two small slits in the cap so the ears come through and the cap sits level instead of perching on top. A blue collar with a simple tag goes at the neck. Paint a rounded black nose and a few whisker dots with skin-safe makeup. Tan sneakers or comfortable slippers finish it. A magnifying glass, an oversized clue card or a light detective notebook adds the humour, and a relaxed, slightly puzzled pose suits him. He reads best standing next to a Scooby or the classic gang.
21. Thorn Hex Girls Costume

Thorn's Hex Girls outfit mixes gothic stage clothes with red and still stays family-friendly. Wear a black long-sleeve mini dress or a fitted top with a layered black skirt. Add a deep red cape, red gloves and red or black tights. A long black wig with red streaks, kept smooth and dramatic, gives the hair. If you're adding streaks yourself, clip-in coloured extensions are far easier than trying to dye synthetic fibre, which barely takes colour. Smoky gray shadow, winged liner, berry lipstick and a little red shimmer near the eyes make the face. Black platform ankle boots need to be stable enough to walk in. A light foam-board red guitar beats anything heavy or sharp. Silver jewellery and a microphone-shaped accessory finish the performer, and she works alone or as the centre of a three-person Hex Girls group.
22. Dusk Hex Girls Costume

Green is what separates Dusk from the other two. Start with a black fitted top and an asymmetrical black skirt or comfortable faux-leather pants. Layer on a deep green capelet, scarf or cropped vest, and add patterned green tights for more colour. A long dark wig with green streaks or temporary green hair extensions gives her hair. Smoky eye makeup with emerald shimmer, defined black liner and a muted plum lip suit her. Black lace-up platform boots are stage-ready. A light keyboard prop, a tambourine or a costume-safe microphone works in the hand, and green nail polish with silver rings adds small detail. For a trio, I'd have all three agree on the same black base pieces, so the only real difference between them is the accent colour.
23. Luna Hex Girls Costume

Luna gets a black base with rich purple. A black velvet top with a layered skirt or wide-leg pants makes a comfortable stage silhouette. Add a purple cape, mesh sleeves or a scarf, plus dark violet tights. A long dark wig with purple streaks, loose waves and face-framing pieces gives her hair. Black velvet picks up every bit of lint and pet hair, so I keep a lint roller in the bag. Violet shadow, graphic black liner, highlighter and a deep berry lip read as stage makeup without going overboard. Choose black platform boots with sturdy soles and heels you can manage. A foam instrument or a glittering microphone prop goes in the hand, and moon-shaped earrings or silver bracelets finish her. She holds up on her own, but she makes the most sense standing beside Thorn and Dusk.
24. Coco Diablo Costume

Coco Diablo is the fashion designer behind a villain costume, so her look should be sleek and confident in black and white. Wear a structured black jumpsuit, a fitted suit, or a long black coat over a high-neck top. Add a white statement collar, a silver belt and elegant gloves. A sharp black bob wig with smooth bangs comes next. Bob wigs look cheap when the ends flick out, so I smooth the ends with a straightener on its lowest setting, and only if the wig is labelled heat-friendly. Precise liner, sculpted brows, soft contour and a deep red lip finish the face. Pointed black ankle boots look polished and are easier to walk in than tall heels. A sketchbook of colourful villain-costume drawings, fabric swatches and a measuring tape make the props, and a small black handbag holds the essentials. She suits fans who want an uncommon character.
25. Phantom Shadow Costume

The Phantom Shadow's glowing green can be done without anything dark or frightening. Wear a long lime-green hooded robe over a green shirt and pants, with the hem kept clear of the ground. Robes are where I see the most trips on porch steps, so I hem them to the ankle bone even if the character's goes to the floor. Soft green gloves and light shoe covers over supportive sneakers finish the body. Paint the face pale green with darker green shading at the cheeks, and use bright red eye makeup instead of coloured contact lenses. Hair stays hidden under the pointed hood. A painted cardboard candelabra with battery lights, or a vintage-looking book, makes the prop. Reflective green trim keeps you visible outdoors, and the overall effect is spooky in a cartoon way that suits a family Halloween.
26. Space Kook Costume

A silver-blue jumpsuit is the futuristic base for the Space Kook. Layer on a metallic blue chest panel, silver gloves and matching boot covers over comfortable shoes. For the helmet, I'd attach a wide clear face shield to a blue hood rather than enclosing the whole head; a full bubble helmet fogs up within minutes and muffles everything anyone says to you. White and blue face paint can suggest his skull-like alien face, kept stylised and playful. Hide the hair under the hood and run reflective tape along the sleeves and legs. A small cardboard control panel or a battery-operated beacon is the prop. Breathable fabric, clear sight lines and an open face keep it comfortable and safe at a crowded event.
27. Creeper Costume

The Creeper comes down to green makeup and slightly oversized vintage clothes. Wear a dark brown suit jacket over a black shirt with black trousers, and go up a size in the jacket so the shoulders sit wide. Green gloves save you painting your hands; if you do paint them, washable body makeup comes off with soap. Cover the face in smooth green makeup, darker under the cheekbones and around the brows for shape, with no wounds or graphic detail. Cream makeup creases and rubs onto collars on a warm night, so I press translucent setting powder over it and leave the shirt collar slightly open. Slick short dark hair flat or wear a simple black wig. Heavy black shoes or work boots ground the outfit. Carry an old paper bank record, a mystery clue or a faux framed portrait, and a stiff, deliberate walk does the rest.
28. Ghost Clown Costume

The Ghost Clown is a loose striped jumpsuit in red, yellow, blue and white. Add a wide ruffled collar, oversized fabric buttons and soft white gloves. A bright orange curly wig gives the big outline, and a small fabric clown hat stays on with an elastic tucked under the hair at the back. White face makeup, arched blue brows, a round red nose and a painted smile, all kept cheerful, finish the face. White base is the hardest makeup to keep even, so I apply it in thin layers with a damp sponge and set each one with powder instead of going on thick. Red or blue clown shoe covers go over supportive sneakers. A light circus ticket, a coloured ring or a foam megaphone makes the prop. The bold stripes make him easy to see and a gentler pick for parties where the darker villains would feel too much.
29. Black Knight Costume

A Black Knight can look impressive with no heavy armour and no weapon. Start with a black long-sleeve shirt and black pants, then add foam chest armour painted matte black and charcoal gray. Raw EVA foam soaks up paint, so I seal it first with a few coats of flexible primer or diluted glue, or the paint cracks the first time you bend. Flexible shoulder pieces, soft gauntlets and shin guards fix on with elastic straps. Wear a light helmet with a lifted visor and a blue or dark purple plume, and check your side vision before you leave the house. Tuck your hair underneath and add simple gray contour around the eyes. Black boots or high-tops keep you stable. A rolled castle map or a shield-shaped foam sign takes the place of a sword, and silver trim with a few rivet details gives the armour depth.
30. Captain Cutler Costume

Captain Cutler starts with a sea-green utility jumpsuit, or a long-sleeve top with matching cargo pants. Layer on a padded vest with flexible tubing made from light craft materials. Build the diving helmet from painted foam rings and a clear face shield, leaving plenty of open space for air and visibility. Pale green makeup with turquoise highlights gives his glow. Green gloves and rubber-style boot covers finish the outline, with supportive sneakers underneath. A foam diving gauge, a coil of rope or a cardboard treasure chart is the prop, and reflective tape around the suit helps at night. This is the most construction-heavy costume on the list, and I'd only take it on with a week to spare; the helmet alone needs drying time between glue and paint coats.
31. Shaggy And Scooby Duo Costume

The easiest duo of all: Shaggy's slouchy clothes beside Scooby's dog details. One person wears a loose green T-shirt, brown pants, messy brown hair, faint stubble and brown sneakers. The other wears a brown hoodie and joggers with black felt spots, floppy ears, a tail and the turquoise collar, plus brown face makeup, a black nose and whisker dots. Match the snack props, one oversized sandwich and one decorated treat box, so the joke reads as a pair. You both need comfortable shoes, because the funniest photo is always the two of you mid-run, fleeing something just out of frame. It's cheap to put together and suits friends, siblings or couples.
32. Fred And Daphne Couple Costume

Fred and Daphne are two polished, colourful outfits that look good side by side. Fred wears a white sweater with a blue collar, blue trousers, an orange ascot, a short blond wig and brown loafers. Daphne wears a purple long-sleeve dress, lavender tights, a green neck scarf, purple boots and a long red wig with a purple headband. Fred carries a clipboard with a silly trap plan, and Daphne holds a magnifying glass and a purple handbag. Keep his makeup natural and give her soft lavender shadow with pink lipstick. What makes them look like a couple rather than two people in nice clothes is a shared retro cut, so I match the era of both outfits instead of mixing modern skinny jeans with a vintage mini. They suit couples who want matching characters without identical outfits.
33. Velma And Daphne Duo Costume

Velma and Daphne are the best contrast in the gang: one boxy and practical, one fitted and glamorous. Velma wears an orange turtleneck, a red pleated skirt, orange knee socks, burgundy Mary Janes, an auburn bob wig and thick black glasses. Daphne wears a purple mini dress, lavender tights, a green scarf, purple boots and a long red wig with a matching headband. Two red wigs side by side can clash, so I'd pick an auburn with more brown in it for Velma and a brighter copper for Daphne. Understated makeup for Velma, polished lavender eyes and a pink lip for Daphne. Velma gets the magnifying glass and notebook; Daphne gets the purple bag and folded map. Both skirts can be lengthened or worn over leggings for more coverage, and a back-to-back pose with the props makes the photo.
34. Scooby And Scrappy Duo Costume

Scooby and Scrappy are a lively dog duo for siblings, friends or a parent and child. Scooby wears a dark brown hoodie and pants with black felt spots, long floppy ears, a bigger tail and the turquoise collar. Scrappy wears lighter brown, shorter ears, a smaller tail and a bright blue collar. Both get black noses, whisker dots, brown gloves and matching sneakers or soft paw covers. Give Scooby the snack box and Scrappy a foam clue card or an eager sign. The size difference is the whole joke, so the taller person should be Scooby; if it has to go the other way, lean hard on ear length and colour to keep the two straight. With no masks or heavy bodysuits, it stays comfortable for trick-or-treating, school events and family gatherings.
35. Mystery Inc. Group Costume

All five together is the group version everyone understands at a glance. Scooby wears the spotted brown dog outfit with ears, tail, turquoise collar, puppy makeup and brown shoes. Shaggy needs a green shirt, brown pants, messy hair, light stubble and a giant sandwich. Velma wears an orange sweater, red skirt, knee socks, glasses, bob wig and Mary Janes. Daphne has a purple dress, green scarf, red wig, lavender tights and purple boots. Fred rounds out the group in a white top, blue pants, orange ascot, blond wig and loafers. Spread the props, a magnifying glass, a map, a notebook and a trap diagram, across the five. Full-length photos show everyone's feet, so I check that nobody turns up in the wrong colour sneakers.
36. Mystery Inc. Family Costume

In a family version, hand out the characters by comfort, personality and age rather than by who's a boy or a girl. Adults might take Fred and Daphne's tailored outfits, older kids Velma and Shaggy, and the youngest becomes Scooby in a soft brown jumpsuit. Everyone gets character hair, the right shoes and light accessories: Fred's map, Daphne's purple bag, Velma's magnifying glass, Shaggy's sandwich, and Scooby's ears and collar. Stretch fabrics, cushioned shoes and removable layers let the costumes go from a warm house to a cold street. A teal treat bag can stand in for the Mystery Machine's colours. The little one who wants to be Scooby usually wants to be Scooby all evening, so I make that the warmest costume in the family.
37. Mystery Inc. Kids Group Costume

For a group of kids, swap anything delicate for something soft and secure. One child wears Scooby's brown hoodie, felt spots, floppy ears, tail, face paint and sneakers. Shaggy gets a green tee, brown joggers, a messy wig and a foam sandwich. Velma wears an orange sweatshirt, red skort, knee socks, glasses, bob wig and strap shoes. Daphne has a purple knit dress, green scarf, red wig, leggings and purple sneakers. Fred wears a white sweatshirt, blue collar, orange scarf, blue pants, blond wig and brown sneakers. Foam magnifying glasses, paper maps and notebooks replace anything breakable. With five children, I write each name inside the small pieces, since ears and scarves get swapped and lost within the hour. Bright colours and comfortable shoes suit class parties, parades and supervised trick-or-treating.
38. Shaggy And Baby Scooby Costume

Here the adult wears Shaggy's easy outfit and the baby wears a soft Scooby. The adult goes in a roomy green T-shirt, brown pants, tousled brown hair, a little stubble makeup and cushioned brown sneakers. Dress the baby in a warm brown footed onesie with black fabric spots sewn on securely, never glued, because anything that can come off ends up in a mouth. Soft floppy ears go on a comfortable cap, and a printed turquoise collar design replaces any loose neck accessory. Skip face paint on the baby, along with detachable tails or tags that could be grabbed. The adult carries a plush sandwich and a teal diaper bag dressed up as mystery-solving gear. It's sweet and practical for short outings and family photos.
39. Dog Scooby And Mystery Inc. Owners Costume

The family dog plays Scooby while the people play the gang. A comfortable turquoise collar cover and a light 'SD' tag are enough for the dog; never use dye, tight headwear or human makeup on a pet. A brown dog needs almost nothing else, and other dogs can wear a breathable brown vest if they're happy in clothes. Try the vest on for short spells at home a few days ahead, and if the dog freezes, scratches at it or refuses to walk, leave it off. The owners can pick Shaggy's green shirt and brown pants, Velma's orange sweater and red skirt, Daphne's purple dress and green scarf, or Fred's white-and-blue outfit with an orange ascot, each with the right wig, makeup, props and walking shoes. Keep the leash in easy reach and give the dog regular breaks.
40. Scooby-Doo Villains Group Costume

A group can skip the gang altogether and go as the villains. Line up the green-robed Phantom Shadow, the silver-blue Space Kook, the brown-suited Creeper, the striped Ghost Clown, the foam-armoured Black Knight and the sea-green Captain Cutler. Each person wears that villain's hair or hood, stylised makeup, gloves, costume-safe props and supportive shoes. Foam maps, lanterns, control panels, circus tickets and diving gauges stand in for weapons. Keep the makeup graphic and cartoonish, with no blood, injuries or scary contact lenses. Build each villain around one dominant colour so the lineup looks planned rather than random. For the group photo I love a cardboard 'unmasked' prop: one person holds up a mask of their villain while the others point, the way so many episodes end.
Five People, One Mystery Machine Palette
The most common problem I see with a gang costume is that everyone shops alone and turns up in five unrelated shades. The characters only read as a group when their colours sit together the way they do on screen.
Share Daylight Photos Before Anyone Buys
Store lighting lies, especially with orange and purple. Have each person send a photo of their main piece taken by a window, and compare them side by side in a group chat before tags come off.
Pick Bright or Faded, Not Both
Either everyone goes bright and cartoonish or everyone goes muted and vintage. One neon green shirt next to four washed-out thrift finds looks like an accident, while five faded pieces together look deliberate.
Decide the Line-Up
For photos I put Fred and Daphne in the middle, Velma slightly to one side with her magnifying glass up, and Shaggy and Scooby at the end clinging to each other. It sounds fussy, but it's what makes strangers say the names out loud.
When the Night Turns Cold or Wet
Velma and Scooby are already warm. Daphne's mini dress and Fred's sweater are the ones that suffer. I put thermal leggings in a matching lavender under Daphne's tights and a thin long-sleeve thermal under Fred's sweater, where the collar hides it. Shaggy can swap his tee for a green hoodie worn over it without losing the character.
A synthetic wig shrugs off drizzle better than a blow-dried style, since the curl is set into the fibre, but it needs to dry on a stand or a bottle overnight, away from any heater. Felt spots and tape lift in the rain, so if the forecast looks wet, stitch Scooby's spots on before you go.
Which Member of the Gang Would You Be?
Scooby-Doo works for almost any celebration because the characters' colours do most of the work. A plain DIY outfit in the right shades already reads, and wigs, makeup, shoes and light props take it the rest of the way. Going solo, pick a favourite gang member or one of the villains. As a couple, try Shaggy and Scooby, Fred and Daphne, or Velma and Daphne. Families, kids and pet owners can adapt the theme with soft materials and practical layers. Whoever you go as, I'd put clear vision, supportive shoes, breathable fabric and safe accessories first. Get those right and the costume will be comfortable, good in photos and ready for a night of solving mysteries.
