Red hair is a head start on Halloween. A lot of the most familiar characters in film, cartoons and comics are redheads, so when your own copper, auburn or ginger hair is already doing the work, the rest of the costume can be surprisingly simple. Below are forty characters and classic looks that lean on that color, from mermaids and superheroes to sitcom icons and storybook girls, each with clothing, hair, makeup, shoes and a prop. Most come together from closet basics, thrift finds and a little craft time rather than a bagged costume. If your hair isn't red, a temporary spray or a wig gets you there, and I'll cover which one to trust further down.

Copper, Auburn or Strawberry? Read Your Shade First
Not every redhead suits every red-haired character, and the difference is undertone. Before I suggest a costume, I look at the hair in daylight and sort it roughly into one of three families.
- Bright copper and orange-red: closest to the cartoon redheads. Wilma, Pippi, Starfire, Leeloo and Annie need very little help.
- Deep auburn and mahogany: richer and cooler. Anna, Fiona, Rose, Joan and Scarlet Witch look right without any color added.
- Strawberry blonde and light ginger: softer. Daphne, Anne Shirley and the fox suit it, and a spray on the front sections brightens it for Ariel or Merida.
Then think about the clothing color sitting next to your face. Green, teal, navy and purple make any red look redder. Red clothing is the tricky one: a blue-based red dress beside orange hair can look like two separate decisions, so hold the fabric up to your hair before you buy, and choose brick or rust for copper and cherry or wine for auburn.
1. Ariel Mermaid Costume

Ariel is the obvious first choice for long, bright red hair, and the walkable version beats a real tail every time. A lavender fitted top with a shimmering green maxi skirt gives you the silhouette; a skirt with a flared or tiered hem moves like water and lets you climb stairs. Full side-parted waves are the signature, and if your red runs darker than hers, a little temporary color on the front sections lifts it. Pearl-style earrings, a small seashell purse and aqua flats or green ankle boots. Keep the makeup dewy with rosy cheeks, soft lavender shadow and gloss. A fork or a small plush fish tells people who you are faster than any amount of sequins.
2. Merida Princess Costume

Merida is really about the curls, so start there. Scrunch mousse through damp hair and let it dry without brushing; brushing out natural curls turns them to frizz, which reads less like a princess and more like a bad morning. A voluminous copper wig works if your hair is straight. The dress is long, teal or forest green, with fitted sleeves and a modest neckline, plus a brown belt and a tartan sash pinned across one shoulder. Pin the sash at the shoulder and again at the opposite hip, or it slides down your arm all night. Freckles, peach blush and soft brows, a faux-gold medallion or a small bear in place of the bow, and sturdy brown ankle boots.
3. Poison Ivy Costume

Green is the color that makes red hair look its reddest, which is why Poison Ivy suits nearly every shade of copper or crimson. A dark green jumpsuit, a fitted midi dress or a long-sleeved bodysuit with an opaque skirt is the base. Artificial ivy goes around the neckline, waist and cuffs with safety pins or fabric tape; cut the vine into short lengths before you attach it, because one long strand pulls the whole neckline when you raise your arms. Glossy waves with a few small leaves tucked by one ear, green shadow, defined lashes and a berry lip. Vine-wrapped wrist cuffs, leaf earrings, green tights if it's cold, and green flats or block-heel boots.
4. Kim Possible Costume

Kim Possible is one of the easiest closet builds on this list. A fitted black mock-neck top, loose olive cargo pants and a wide brown utility belt cover the outfit, with black gloves and a small gray crossbody pouch. The hair should sit at the shoulders with a smooth side part and the ends flipped out; a round brush and a blast of hairspray at the ends holds that flip far longer than a flat iron alone. Neutral eyes, soft brows and a nude lip. Black combat boots, and a painted cardboard communicator as a safe prop that photographs clearly.
5. Daphne Blake Costume

Daphne's purple and lime-green palette is unusually kind to auburn and strawberry-blonde hair, because both shades sit between the two colors. Choose a long-sleeved purple dress at mini or knee length with a lighter lavender headband and matching tights. The lime-green scarf is the detail people spot first, so tie it snug at the side of the neck and tuck the ends rather than letting them hang. Straight hair with softly curled ends, or a smooth shoulder-length wig if yours is shorter. Late-1960s makeup means subtle liner, long lashes, peach blush and pink lipstick. Purple loafers or flats, and a magnifying glass or notebook for the mystery angle.
6. Jessica Rabbit Costume

Red dress and red hair together is trickier than it sounds. If the gown's red leans blue and your hair leans orange, they fight; I hold the fabric up against the hair in daylight before committing. For Jessica Rabbit, a floor-length fitted red gown with a modest slit and a secure neckline is the base, plus long purple opera gloves and sparkly earrings. Deep side-parted waves with one section swept over the face are the shape everyone knows; set them with pins while they cool so they keep the bend. Plum shadow, winged liner, defined lashes and a classic red lip. Comfortable block heels beat stilettos for a long night, and a small glittering clutch holds your phone.
7. Black Widow Costume

Black is the easiest backdrop for copper hair, which makes Black Widow a strong pick with very little effort. A fitted but flexible jumpsuit, black cargo pants with a long-sleeved top, or an athletic set all work, as long as you can crouch in it. A wide utility belt, fingerless gloves and painted foam wrist cuffs finish the body. The hair depends on which version you want: a wavy shoulder bob or a loose braid. Taupe shadow, defined lashes and a muted rose lip. Black lace-up boots for support. Skip combat props and carry a small badge-style card instead.
8. Scarlet Witch Costume

This one is all about red on red, so match the coat or cape to your hair's undertone: cherry and crimson suit cool auburn, while brick and rust suit copper. Wear it over a coordinating fitted top with opaque leggings or a long skirt. The headpiece can be cut from craft foam and painted burgundy; heat it gently with a hair dryer and curve it over a bowl while it cools so it follows the shape of your head instead of pressing on your temples. Long, softly textured waves with a center part, smoky cranberry shadow, light contour and a deep rose lip. Fingerless gloves, a red pendant and black knee-high boots.
9. Jean Grey Phoenix Costume

Phoenix is the green-and-gold version of Jean Grey, and the color pairing flatters most red hair. A green long-sleeved jumpsuit or a matching top and leggings is the base. Make the gold sash from metallic fabric, add gold cuffs, and cut the firebird emblem from craft foam; glitter foam sheets already have the shine, so they save you painting. The hair should be big and moving, so set waves with a large barrel and brush them out gently with fingers. Bronze shadow, peach blush and a soft red lip. Gold ankle boots or yellow flats, and stop there. The hair, the emblem and the colors carry it.
10. Starfire Costume

Purple next to orange-red makes both colors louder, which is the whole point of Starfire. Choose a purple skater dress, a modest fitted jumpsuit or a long-sleeved top with a skirt. Silver trim at the neckline, waist and cuffs goes on with fabric tape; metallic ribbon is easier to handle than vinyl here because it bends around curves without puckering. Purple tights, then silver boots or metallic sneakers. Her hair is very long, straight and intensely red, so a wig often gets you closer than your own color. Lavender shadow, plenty of highlighter and a pink lip. Green gems on a headband and belt finish the alien details.
11. Bloom Fairy Costume

Bloom needs three things: a blue cropped jacket, long red hair and wings. A matching camisole with a knee-length blue skirt or shorts over opaque tights covers the rest. Choose wings narrow enough to pass through a doorway without turning sideways; anything wider than your shoulders gets bent within the first hour indoors. Long, smooth layers with a small section pinned back, shimmering aqua shadow, rosy cheeks and glossy pink lips. Blue ankle boots or ribbon-trimmed flats, and a star wand or a glittery blue pouch. It's playful and suits family events.
12. Misty Trainer Costume

Misty's outfit is the light, sporty option for warm nights or anyone who wants an uncomplicated costume. A yellow cropped tank, with a fitted undershirt underneath for more coverage, high-waisted denim shorts and bright red suspenders. The side ponytail sits high, so if your hair is short, a clip-in ponytail in your own shade fills it out; clip it over a small braid so it has something to grip. Freckles, waterproof mascara and tinted balm. Red-and-white sneakers, a red-and-white toy ball, a yellow plush creature and a light backpack for your things.
13. Jessie Cowgirl Costume

Jessie is cheerful, easy to move in and good on a cold night because you can layer under the shirt. Start with a white button-down and add yellow felt panels and oversized cuffs, with red stitching drawn or sewn on. Felt sticks well to cotton with fabric glue but let it dry flat overnight; pinned felt shifts as you move. High-waisted jeans or overalls, a cow-print belt and a bright red cowboy hat. One long side braid tied with a yellow ribbon is the signature. Freckles, rosy cheeks and a red lip. Brown Western boots and a soft craft-cord lasso or small toy horse.
14. Anna Princess Costume

Anna's traveling outfit is the one I'd steer you toward for a chilly October, because the layers are the costume. A black embroidered vest over a pale blue long-sleeved blouse, a royal-blue midi or maxi skirt and a magenta cape. Two neat braids are her look, and a pale streak of temporary hair chalk at the front is optional; chalk shows best on lighter red and needs a little hairspray over it to stop it dusting onto the cape. Light freckles, rosy blush, soft brown liner and a berry balm. Black ankle boots, a small snowflake brooch and warm gloves outdoors.
15. Princess Fiona Costume

A long green dress and a thick auburn braid make Fiona easy to read. An emerald or olive maxi with long sleeves, a square neckline and simple gold trim is right. Her circlet slides on smooth hair, so I thread two bobby pins through the band at the sides before pinning it in place. Wear your hair in one heavy braid down the back, or braid in an extension for length. For the ogre version, use gentle green face paint on the face, neck and hands, set with translucent powder so it doesn't wipe onto the dress, and add felt ears on a headband. A soft pink lip, defined brows and brown or green flats.
16. Ginny Weasley Costume

School-uniform basics turn into Ginny quickly. A white button-down under a charcoal V-neck sweater, a pleated gray skirt or tailored trousers, and a striped burgundy-and-gold tie with a matching scarf. If you're using red hair spray, wait until it's fully dry before putting on the white shirt; wet temporary color transfers onto a collar and doesn't always wash out of cotton. Straight, softly waved or low-ponytail hair and minimal makeup. Black loafers or lace-ups with knee socks, plus an old textbook, a handmade timetable or a small plush owl. Leave realistic wand props at home where pointed accessories may be restricted.
17. Anne Shirley Costume

Anne's look is cottage-plain, and that restraint is what makes it read. A high-neck white blouse under a brown or muted green pinafore, and a straw hat with ribbon and a few small artificial flowers. Two long braids from a center part, tied with ribbons that match the dress; they swing more when you braid loosely from the ears down rather than tight at the scalp. A few delicate freckles, soft peach blush and tinted balm. Brown lace-up boots with cream socks. A vintage-style book, small carpetbag or basket of artificial apples to carry. It's warm enough for a cool afternoon outside.
18. Pippi Longstocking Costume

Pippi is the costume that celebrates bright red hair most loudly. A patched pinafore over a striped long-sleeved shirt in deliberately clashing colors, mismatched knee socks and sturdy lace-up boots in different shades. The sticking-out braids are the trick: braid a length of craft wire or a pipe cleaner into each one, bend them out, and wrap the cut ends in tape so nothing scratches. Orange hair spray brightens a darker shade. Light freckles, rosy cheeks and very little eye makeup. A plush monkey or a light vintage suitcase. Because nothing is meant to match, you can build it from whatever is in the drawer.
19. Annie Costume

Annie depends on the curls more than the dress. Short, tight, rounded red curls are the defining feature, so use curl cream and small rollers on your own hair, or pick a rounded ginger wig and fluff it with fingers, not a brush. The dress is bright red at knee length with a white Peter Pan collar, puffed sleeves and a neat waist, with white tights and black Mary Janes. Freckles, peach blush and a natural pink lip. A heart-shaped locket and a small plush dog, and a red cardigan over the dress if the evening turns cold.
20. Strawberry Shortcake Costume

Strawberry Shortcake suits almost any age because it's built from layers. A pink jumper or strawberry-print dress over a red-and-white striped shirt, green-and-white striped tights and red Mary Jane flats. The pink cap carries the character; small felt strawberries and leaves stitched or glued to the brim stay put better than stickers. Loose curls, pigtails or a shoulder-length bob underneath, with rosy blush across the cheeks and nose, a few freckles and pink gloss. Carry a strawberry purse or a small basket of artificial berries. A green cardigan adds warmth and fits the palette.
21. Miss Frizzle Costume

The Frizzle dress is the costume, so pick one classroom theme and stick to it: all planets, all dinosaurs or all sea creatures. A navy, purple or cobalt fit-and-flare dress carries removable felt shapes well; pin them from the inside so the pin heads don't show. Mixing themes looks crowded instead of eccentric. Curly red hair in a loose bun with a few spirals at the face, planet earrings, bright blue shadow and a rosy lip. Coordinating tights and low block heels, and a stack of science books, a clipboard or a plush lizard. Teachers get a lot of use out of this one at daytime school events.
22. Wilma Flintstone Costume

Wilma is white and orange, so a clean white dress lets orange-red hair take over. Choose a one-shoulder white midi with a jagged hem that's finished, not raw; a raw zigzag frays and curls after one wash. The oversized necklace is lightweight plastic beads or painted foam balls strung on cord. Her hair sits in a tall, structured bun, which needs a sock bun or a donut underneath to hold the height all night. Blue shadow, defined lashes and coral lipstick. White flats or low sandals, a gray felt stone-pattern bag, and a fit that stays secure when you sit and dance.
23. Pebbles Flintstone Costume

An adult Pebbles is cheerful and adapts easily to different body types. A bright green sleeveless tunic over fitted black shorts or leggings, with black felt triangles stuck across the fabric. The high ponytail sits right on the crown with a light white foam bone fixed to the hair tie; a rubber band wrapped around the bone's middle and threaded through the elastic holds better than glue. Warm peach makeup, freckles and a glossy coral lip. Green flats or black slip-ons, and a faux-fur crossbody or a plush dinosaur. Choose a tunic long enough for wherever you're going.
24. Leeloo Costume

Leeloo suits anyone with a short red bob, because her chin-length orange cut is the instant giveaway. A white fitted top with gold or beige harness straps fixed securely over it, then metallic leggings or slim orange pants for a version you can wear in public. Choppy texture at the ends, with brighter orange temporary color on the tips, looks closer to the film than a smooth bob. Defined brows, black liner and a peach lip. White platform sneakers or sturdy ankle boots, and a laminated futuristic pass or a handful of colored foam stones as props.
25. Mary Jane Watson Costume

Mary Jane Watson can pass as a regular fall outfit and still read as the character, which makes it a quiet choice for work. A fitted black turtleneck with dark jeans, ankle boots and a cropped brown or burgundy jacket is the subtle version; a red top with a denim skirt and opaque tights reads more clearly. Long, bouncy layers with a center or side part, brown liner, peach blush and a classic red lip. Carry a camera, a script or a press notebook, and add a small spider pin on the jacket for anyone who looks closely.
26. Lois Griffin Costume

For pure comfort, Lois Griffin is hard to beat. A mint-green button-down with beige trousers and red canvas sneakers or flats, shirt tucked or loose as you like. The short red bob with curved ends is what people recognize, so if your hair is longer, a short wig does more than any other piece. Mascara, peach blush and pink lipstick only; heavy makeup works against the flat cartoon look. Oversized round earrings add definition. A coffee mug or a handmade family photo album as the prop. The two colors carry from across the room.
27. Peggy Bundy Costume

Peggy Bundy is volume and leopard print. A leopard blouse or fitted dress, black leggings and a wide waist belt. The teased half-up hair needs more than spray: backcomb small sections at the crown, smooth the top layer over them and pin the volume in place, adding a clip-in piece if your hair is fine. Smoky shadow, strong liner, generous blush and glossy red lipstick. Big earrings, stacked bracelets and a bright clutch push it toward the late 1980s. Low black heels or leopard flats, and a fashion magazine or a box of wrapped candy as the joke.
28. Joan Holloway Costume

Joan is a vintage office look built around carefully set red hair. A jewel-toned wiggle dress in emerald, royal blue or plum, knee-length with a secure neckline; choose one with some stretch, because a rigid wiggle dress makes sitting and stairs a struggle. A slim belt, a structured handbag and a simple gold brooch. The updo has soft volume and shaped front sections, which hold best if you set the hair in rollers the night before. Precise black liner, groomed brows, peach blush and a rich berry lip. Sheer tights, closed-toe pumps and an empty file folder or vintage notebook.
29. Lucy Ricardo Costume

Lucy is vintage charm plus expressive curls. A navy or black polka-dot shirt dress with a fitted waist and a flared knee-length skirt, then a white collar, an apron or pearls depending on which episode you have in mind. Short red curls under a patterned scarf tied at the crown; tie the scarf on dry, set curls, or it flattens them. Arched brows, black winged liner, rosy cheeks and red lipstick. Low black pumps or Mary Janes, and a chocolate box, vintage handbag or kitchen timer as a nod to her comic scenes.
30. Vivian Ward Red Dress Costume

This is the evening-gown moment, not the earlier streetwear. A floor-length red gown with a fitted waist and a secure off-the-shoulder or sweetheart neckline; off-the-shoulder styles need a snug bodice, or you'll spend the night hitching them up. Long white gloves, a sparkly necklace and a small clutch. A voluminous curly updo with loose tendrils at the face, softly smoky eyes, peach blush and a balanced red lip. Comfortable black or metallic block heels. A faux opera program makes the film reference clear, and the whole look suits a formal Halloween party.
31. Rose Titanic Costume

Rose's boarding outfit is a period costume with good coverage for cold weather. A long pinstriped or ivory walking dress with a fitted jacket, high neck and floor-length skirt, and a wide-brim purple or black hat with ribbon and artificial flowers. Big hats need anchoring: a low twisted bun gives you something to pin into, and two long hatpins or bobby pins crossed through the bun hold the brim steady in wind. Soft curls at the temples, taupe shadow, rosy blush and berry lipstick. Lace-up ankle boots and gloves, a small vintage handbag or a sketchbook, and no ship props. The hat does the explaining.
32. Ginger Spice Costume

Ginger Spice is 1990s pop in one dress. A sleeveless red, white and blue flag-pattern mini, or a plain dress with removable fabric panels pinned on, plus opaque tights and red platform sneakers. Big, high-volume waves with lighter face-framing streaks; temporary blonde streaks show on red hair only if it's fairly light, so clip-in blonde pieces are the safer way to get them. Frosted shadow, black liner, rosy blush and a glossy neutral lip. Hoop earrings and a painted cardboard microphone. A cropped red jacket outdoors keeps the colors intact.
33. Raggedy Ann Costume

Raggedy Ann brings old storybook charm. A blue floral prairie dress under a crisp white pinafore apron, with white bloomers or opaque tights, red-and-white striped knee socks and black Mary Janes. Red yarn or natural hair in two thick pigtails under a white bonnet; a yarn wig is lighter than it looks and doesn't frizz the way synthetic hair does. Round rosy cheeks, painted lower lashes, freckles and a small red triangle on the nose. A red yarn bow at the neck and a cloth heart or fabric storybook. Keep the doll makeup soft and cheerful, never cracked or creepy.
34. Sally Patchwork Costume

Sally is a classic Halloween look that doesn't need anything frightening. A knee-length patchwork-print dress in muted teal, pink, yellow and black, striped tights and black lace-up ankle boots. Long red hair straight with a center part, falling naturally. Pale blue face makeup should go on in a thin, even layer and be set with powder; a heavy layer creases on a warm night and rubs onto the dress collar. Soft black liner, a berry lip and a few drawn stitch lines with cosmetic pencil, kept decorative rather than wound-like. Carry a basket of artificial leaves or a black cat plush.
35. Queen Of Hearts Costume

Red, black and white color blocking makes the Queen of Hearts a natural match for crimson hair. A full-skirted red dress with a black fitted bodice and white collar, heart appliqués along the skirt and a gold belt. A tall curly updo with a small gold crown; a crown on a comb or a headband stays put far better than one balanced on top. Pale foundation, thin arched brows, red shadow and a sharp heart-shaped lip. Black tights and red ankle boots. A heart-shaped fan or a deck of oversized handmade cards, and leave the scepter at home in a crowded room.
36. Mad Hatter Costume With Red Hair

The Hatter is where orange-red hair can be as wild as you like. A bright patterned vest and an oversized teal or plum blazer over a ruffled white shirt, with cropped striped trousers, loud socks and sturdy lace-up boots. Tease your hair outward or tuck it under a tall top hat with ribbon, feathers and a handmade price card; a tall hat needs elastic under the hair at the back, or it tips forward every time you nod. Coral shadow, mismatched liner colors, rosy cheeks and berry lipstick. A big bow tie, fingerless gloves, and a light teacup stuck to its saucer so the prop survives the walk.
37. Chucky Doll Costume

Chucky stays playful when the clothing does the work and the scary parts stay off. Denim overalls with colorful toy-style patches over a striped long-sleeved shirt, striped socks and bright red sneakers. A messy chin-length red bob, with temporary orange spray and light teasing for that doll-hair texture. Freckles, rosy cheeks, drawn lower lashes and neutral lips. No scars, wounds or weapon props; carry a toy box, building blocks or a big cardboard button. It stays comfortable enough for a family party.
38. Pennywise Clown Costume

This is a softened, stylized take on the famous clown. A light gray or ivory ruffled dress or jumpsuit with puffed sleeves and red pom-pom buttons, a layered collar, a red belt, white tights and silver lace-up boots. Red hair goes into two rounded side sections, or use a short orange-red wig. White face makeup should be thin and set with powder, because a thick layer cracks and creases within a couple of hours. Add thin red lines, soft gray shadow and red lipstick, and skip the exaggerated scary details. A single red balloon tied to a wrist ribbon so it can't float off. Keep the expression friendly for a public event.
39. Red-Haired Witch Costume

Copper hair against purple and black is one of my favorite witch palettes. A long black dress with a fitted bodice, flowing skirt and modest bell sleeves, a purple velvet cape, striped tights and buckled black ankle boots. Loose textured waves under a wide-brim pointed hat trimmed with purple ribbon and artificial leaves. A wide brim on loose hair blows off in the first gust, so slide a thin elastic under the hat at the back of the head. Plum shadow, soft black liner, a berry lip and a little shimmer. A small twig broom or a fabric spellbook with blank pages. It stays whimsical and suits families.
40. Red Fox Costume

The fox is the original choice in a list of characters, and it turns natural ginger hair into part of the animal. A rust-orange sweater dress or long-sleeved top with coordinating leggings, a cream faux-fur panel at the chest, black gloves and black ankle boots for paws. Loose waves or two small top buns under fox ears. Warm copper shadow, black liner, freckles and a small painted black nose. The tail should be fixed to a belt worn under the top, not pinned to the dress, so its weight doesn't drag the hem. It's cozy and practical for trick-or-treating or an outdoor party.
Spray, Chalk or a Wig for Borrowed Red
If your hair isn't red, or isn't the right red, each temporary option behaves differently, and the wrong one can ruin a white collar.
Temporary color spray
Spray gives the brightest result on blonde or light brown hair and barely shows on very dark hair. Do it before you dress, with a towel around your shoulders, and let it dry completely. It rubs onto collars, pillows and car headrests, and rain makes it run, so keep it away from light-colored outfits on a wet night.
Hair chalk
Chalk is gentler and good for streaks or ends, but it dusts off as you move. A light mist of hairspray over the top locks it in. On dark hair it shows best when applied to slightly damp strands.
A wig
A wig is the only way to get a very different cut, such as Annie's curls or Leeloo's bob. Most budget wigs are synthetic, and synthetic fiber frizzes or melts near a curling iron, oven or candle, so only use heat if the label says heat-friendly. Wear a wig cap, pin through the wig's combs into a few flat pin curls, and shake a new wig out outdoors first, because cheap ones shed for the first wear.
Your Shade Does Half the Work
Red hair takes a lot of the guesswork out of planning, because for most of these characters the hair is the first thing people read. The outfits run from cargo pants and school uniforms to gowns, vintage dresses and superhero suits. Use your own copper, ginger or auburn whenever you can, and reach for spray, an extension or a comfortable wig only when the character's shade or cut is far from yours. Get the colors and silhouette right first, then the makeup and props. Supportive shoes and light props will matter more after three hours than any extra detail.
