A couples costume lands when someone across the room gets the joke before you've said a word, and each of you still looks like yourself. In my experience that comes down to shared colour, two clear silhouettes, shoes you can both stand in all night and one or two props. Below are 40 pairings: famous fictional duos, visual puns built from plain clothes, and polished takes on classic Halloween themes, from sweet and spooky to nostalgic and DIY. Each one is styled head to toe, with clothing, hair, makeup, props and shoes. Nearly all of them swap easily between any two people, and I've flagged the ones that cost very little.

What Makes Two Separate Outfits Read as a Couple
Most duo costumes that fall flat do so because each person dressed well on their own and nothing ties them together. Before buying anything, I sit both people down and agree on three things.
- A shared colour. Pick one colour you'll both carry somewhere, even if it's only a scarf, a collar or the trim on a hat. It's the quickest visual link there is.
- One signature detail each. Ask what single item makes each character readable: Coraline's yellow coat, Velma's glasses, Cruella's split wig. Spend money on that piece and save on the rest.
- The same level of effort. If one of you is in a full wig and face paint and the other is in a T-shirt with a label, the photo looks lopsided. Match the commitment, whatever it is.
Then stand side by side in front of a mirror. If a stranger could guess the pair from the back of a room, you're there. If not, the shared colour usually needs to be bigger.
1. Morticia And Gomez Addams Couples Costume

Morticia lives or dies on the dress. I look for a floor-length black knit or jersey with long sleeves and a hem that flares a little at the floor, then pair it with a sleek, centre-parted black wig or straightened dark hair. Pale foundation, strong brows, smoky eyes and a deep red lip finish her. Gomez needs a black pinstripe suit, a crisp white shirt, a dark tie and polished shoes, with the hair slicked back and a neat moustache. One artificial red rose is all the prop this pair needs. A thrifted suit and a long jersey dress cover it, and the result suits a formal party far better than anything bulky.
2. Barbie And Ken Couples Costume

The trick with Barbie and Ken is saturation: the pink has to be loud. Barbie wears a hot-pink mini or midi dress, white heels, a small bag and big sunglasses, with a high blonde ponytail or a smooth wig, glossy lips and fresh pink makeup. Ken goes for a pastel striped shirt, white trousers, clean sneakers and a sweater knotted over the shoulders, with tidy hair and a big grin. For a sportier version, I'd do matching neon visors and roller-skate knee pads, minus the actual skates. Most of this is sitting in a thrift store's summer rack, and both outfits are easy to sit and dance in.
3. Shrek And Fiona Couples Costume

Green is what tells people this is Shrek and Fiona, so I don't fuss over making the clothes exact. Shrek wears a cream tunic over brown pants, a textured vest, a wide belt and brown ankle boots, plus light green face makeup, small ogre ears on a headband and a bald cap if he wants one. Fiona takes a long green velvet-look dress with gold trim, flats and a braided red wig, with the same green makeup and smaller ears tucked near the braid. Green cream makeup rubs onto the collar within the hour, so I set both faces with translucent powder and keep a wipe in a pocket. A plush donkey or a storybook makes the shared prop, and the layers keep you warm outdoors.
4. Beetlejuice And Lydia Couples Costume

Stripes against red gothic romance is the contrast that makes this pair. Beetlejuice wears a black-and-white striped suit over a white shirt with sturdy black boots, plus temporary green hair colour or a messy pale wig, white face makeup and softly shaded eyes; the wild styling says enough without any gore. Lydia wears a layered red dress with a high neck, red tights and black ankle boots, with a dark tousled wig, muted makeup and a light red veil. A vintage-style camera is the prop I'd hand her, since it hangs on a strap and frees both hands. Thrifted stripes, formal secondhand clothes and a little cheap tulle get you most of the way.
5. Coraline And Wybie Couples Costume

Coraline is one of the easiest characters to spot, thanks to the yellow raincoat. Layer it over a striped shirt and dark jeans with yellow rain boots, then add a short blue bob wig, natural makeup and a small blue crossbody. A plush black cat or a paper key is her prop. Wybie wears a dark jacket, black pants, gloves and lace-up boots, with curly hair or a short dark wig. I'd add his skeleton-print detail with removable white tape rather than paint, so the jacket goes back into the closet afterward. Keep his makeup soft and slightly pale. Both outfits have outerwear, covered legs and walking shoes, which makes this a sensible pick for a cold night out.
6. Mario And Princess Peach Couples Costume

Bright primary colours carry Mario and Peach. Mario wears blue overalls over a red long-sleeve shirt, white gloves, brown work boots and a red cap with a removable letter, with a costume moustache and hair tucked under the hat. Felt letters peel off a polyester cap quickly, so I stitch around the edge or use a fabric glue rather than the sticky back alone. Peach wears a pink fit-and-flare dress, white gloves and pink or white shoes, with loose blonde curls or a long wig, rosy makeup and a light gold crown. A plush mushroom or a gold cardboard star is the shared prop. The roles swap easily, so either of you can take either character.
7. Velma And Shaggy Couples Costume

If you want a duo from your own closets, this is it. Velma needs an orange turtleneck, a red pleated skirt, orange knee socks and red flats, plus a short brown bob, square glasses and a coral lip. A magnifying glass or small notebook gives her something to do. Shaggy wears an oversized green T-shirt with loose brown pants and dark sneakers, deliberately messy hair and a little brown scruff drawn on if he wants it. I hand him a reusable sandwich box as the prop, which always gets a laugh. Neither outfit needs much makeup, so they stay comfortable through a long party.
8. Daphne And Fred Couples Costume

Daphne and Fred give you strong colour without full theatrical outfits. Daphne wears a purple mini or shift dress, a green neck scarf, pink tights and purple ankle boots, with long red waves or an auburn wig, lavender eyes and a pink lip. Fred needs a white sweater or collared shirt, blue trousers, an orange neck scarf and brown loafers. A combed blonde wig helps people place him, though his own hair is fine. The scarves are what I'd get right, since those two little knots are the detail people recognise first. A magnifying glass, notepad or cardboard mystery map gives each of you a prop, and everything is easy to sit and dance in.
9. Cosmo And Wanda Couples Costume

Cosmo and Wanda are mostly office clothes plus bright wigs. Cosmo wears a white button-down, a black tie, black trousers and black dress shoes, with a short green wig, a light gold crown and a star wand made from cardboard on a wooden dowel. Wanda repeats the formula with a yellow top, black skirt or trousers and black shoes, then a pink wig, a matching crown and wand. Coordinate bright eye makeup with each wig colour. Small fairy wings are optional; I'd add them only if the party isn't packed, as they get bent in a crowd. Cheap and easy to move in.
10. Jack And Sally Couples Costume

Jack and Sally are a classic, and none of it needs graphic makeup. Jack wears a slim black suit with white fabric-paint pinstripes, a white shirt, a bat bow tie and black dress shoes, plus smooth white face makeup, shaded eyes and a simple curved smile. Sally wears a knee-length patchwork dress over striped tights and black lace-up boots, with a long red wig, pale blue face makeup and neatly drawn stitches. I paint the pinstripes with the jacket on a hanger and let them dry overnight, since fabric paint smudges if you rush it. A small artificial flower or plush ghost dog finishes the storybook feel. Pick breathable makeup and stretchy fabric if you'll be out for hours.
11. Alice And Mad Hatter Couples Costume

Mismatched pattern is the whole idea of Alice and the Hatter. Alice wears a pale blue fit-and-flare dress over a white blouse, a white apron, striped tights and black Mary Janes, with a blonde wig, a black headband, rosy makeup and a teacup. The Hatter mixes a bright blazer, a patterned vest, cropped trousers, loud socks and sturdy boots, then an orange wig teased messy and an oversized decorated hat. An oversized hat wants to slide back, so I put a comb or elastic inside the band. Colourful eyes and a bow tie add detail, and an empty teapot or cardboard pocket watch is the prop. Thrifted pieces that clash are exactly right here.
12. Cruella And Dalmatian Couples Costume

Cruella and a Dalmatian give you one glamorous outfit and one comfy one. Cruella wears a fitted black dress, a white faux-fur coat, red gloves, sheer tights and red or black heels, plus a half-black, half-white wig, sharp liner and a red lip, with a structured red bag. The Dalmatian wears a white sweatshirt and joggers with removable black felt spots, spotted ears, a face-paint nose, a red collar and white sneakers. I safety-pin the felt spots from the inside so they sit flat and come off after Halloween. Pin the tail firmly to the waistband. Keep both characters playful rather than menacing.
13. Little Red Riding Hood And Wolf Couples Costume

Red Riding Hood is one of the few couples looks that gets better in cold weather. She wears a white blouse, a black or brown corset-style vest, a knee-length skirt, tights and lace-up ankle boots, then a bright red hooded cape, soft curls, rosy makeup and a woven basket. The Wolf wears gray jeans, a gray sweater, a faux-fur vest and dark boots, with ears, a light tail, tousled hair and gray makeup around the nose and eyes. Keep the wolf cute rather than frightening. I'd leave the basket nearly empty or fill it with tissue paper, because a full one gets heavy on your arm by the second street.
14. Frankenstein And Bride Couples Costume

Classic monsters can be smart and family-friendly. The monster wears a slightly oversized black blazer, a dark shirt, cropped trousers and chunky black boots, with pale green makeup, darkened brows and simple drawn stitches, plus hair flattened square with styling product. The Bride wears a long white draped dress, white flats and fingerless gloves, with a tall black wig carrying clean white streaks. A tall wig is front-heavy, so I pin it to a few braids underneath. Pale makeup, dramatic liner and dark lipstick give her a vintage finish, and a few artificial flowers make a prop. Thrifted formalwear covers both, and the layers handle a cool evening.
15. Vampire Count And Countess Couples Costume

Black, burgundy and deep red, repeated on both of you, is what makes a vampire pair look matched. The count wears black trousers, a white ruffled shirt, a fitted vest, a long cape and polished boots, with slicked hair, pale makeup and subtle costume fangs. The countess chooses a long burgundy velvet-look dress, a black cape, lace gloves and flat or heeled ankle boots, with dark waves or an updo, red lips and smoky eyes. Matching cameo necklaces, or goblets holding a normal party drink, finish it. A heavy satin-lined cape gets hot fast indoors, so I'd look for an unlined, light one you can unhook.
16. Ghost And Ghost Hunter Couples Costume

This pairing is half floaty and half practical. The ghost wears loose white layers, like a soft dress or a white shirt with wide-leg pants, plus white sneakers, pale makeup, shimmery eyeshadow and white temporary hair spray or a soft gray wig. A sheer white cape gives movement without covering the face. The ghost hunter wears beige coveralls or cargo pants with a utility vest, hiking boots and costume goggles, plus a name badge and a cardboard scanner with painted buttons. I skip anything that looks like real tactical gear; it reads wrong at a family party. It's cheap, easy to walk in and works for any two people.
17. Sun And Moon Couples Costume

Sun and Moon is about metallic contrast: warm gold against cool silver. The Sun wears a gold jumpsuit or yellow dress with gold shoes, glowing makeup and a sun-ray headpiece cut from light craft foam, with warm curls or a gold-accented updo. The Moon wears silver or midnight blue with silver boots, cool-toned makeup and a crescent headpiece, plus a few removable stars on the sleeves. Matching star wands or small celestial bags tie you together. Since neither is a set character, each of you can wear a dress, a suit or trousers. I measure the sun rays against a doorway before gluing anything; wider than your shoulders and you'll be turning sideways all night.
18. Rainbow And Rain Cloud Couples Costume

The Rainbow and the Rain Cloud are a sweet weather joke built from casual clothes. The Rainbow wears a striped multicolour dress or jumpsuit, or a coordinated top and trousers, with white sneakers, colourful clips, rainbow eye makeup and a sun-shaped bag. The Cloud goes gray from head to toe in a sweatshirt, joggers and silver sneakers, with polyester stuffing on a gray hat or shoulder piece and blue felt raindrops hanging from short ribbons. Loose stuffing sheds all over a party, so I stitch it into a thin net or cheesecloth first. Silver shadow and temporary gray hair colour finish the cloud, and a clear umbrella with blue ribbons makes the shared prop.
19. Bee And Beekeeper Couples Costume

Bee and Beekeeper is cute stripes beside real workwear. The Bee wears a black-and-yellow striped top with a black skirt or trousers, black tights and ankle boots, plus clear wings, an antenna headband, yellow eye makeup and a striped crossbody. The Beekeeper wears white or beige coveralls, work boots, gloves and a wide-brim hat with soft mesh draped around the face; I'd pin the mesh up at the front when you're eating or talking. A cardboard honeycomb or a basket of artificial flowers is the prop, and I'd leave real honey at home. The coverage suits an autumn festival, and a few felt bees on the coveralls link the two looks.
20. Moth And Lamp Couples Costume

Moth and Lamp is a joke people get at once. The Moth wears beige, brown or gray, soft trousers, a fitted top and comfortable boots, with patterned fabric wings, feathery antennae, blended brown makeup and a textured wig or messy hair. The Lamp wears gold or cream with matching shoes and a light lampshade headpiece that leaves the face clear. Battery fairy lights can wind around the clothing; I tape the battery pack inside a pocket so there's no cord trailing to trip on. Glowing highlighter and gold eyes keep the Lamp visible. The moth posing dramatically toward the lamp does the rest, and all of it comes from a basic craft store.
21. Gardener And Flower Couples Costume

The Gardener and Flower pairing is earthy utility next to bright petals. The Gardener wears denim overalls over a plaid or green shirt, gardening gloves, a wide-brim hat and waterproof ankle boots, with natural makeup and a watering can filled with artificial flowers. The Flower wears green, a dress or a top with trousers and green shoes, then a big petal frame around the face made of felt or foam, eyeshadow to match and leaf cuffs at the wrist. Stiff foam petals bend permanently when you sit back in a chair, so I use felt stiffened with a little interfacing, which flexes and springs back. It's easy to read and works inside or out.
22. Chef And Lobster Couples Costume

One tidy chef and one bright red lobster make a funny food pair. The Chef wears black trousers, a white double-breasted jacket, nonslip black shoes and a tall fabric hat, with hair tucked back and a curled moustache if wanted. Hand them a light mixing bowl and a wooden spoon, never real knives. The Lobster wears a red sweatshirt, matching pants and red sneakers, then soft claw mitts, a curved fabric tail, antennae and a little red makeup on the cheeks. Claw mitts make it hard to hold a drink, so I sew them with an open palm slit. Keep it cartoonish. The full coverage is a real advantage on a cold night.
23. Peanut Butter And Jelly Couples Costume

Peanut Butter and Jelly turns two plain outfits into a sandwich. One of you wears tan trousers, a beige top and brown shoes with a cardboard 'Peanut Butter' label and warm bronze makeup. The other wears purple or red with matching sneakers and a 'Jelly' label, with berry eyes or hair clips for contrast. Both add light bread-shaped foam panels over the shoulders, so you can stand together as one sandwich. I cut the arm openings much bigger than seems necessary, because foam doesn't stretch and tight holes rub the underarm raw. No wig or face paint needed, which makes it a solid choice for school-friendly parties or a last-minute plan.
24. Ketchup And Mustard Couples Costume

Red and yellow make the condiment joke readable from the doorway. Ketchup wears a red sweatshirt or fitted top, matching trousers and red sneakers, with a pointed red cap like a bottle top, a white label panel and a touch of red eye makeup. Mustard repeats it in yellow. Hair can stay natural or tuck under each cap. Cardboard hot dog or fry props make good photos, but keep them light. I like this for anyone who hates scratchy costumes, since it's made entirely from sweats. If you're walking outside after dark, cut the white labels from reflective fabric so drivers can see you.
25. Plug And Socket Couples Costume

Plug and Socket is cheap and gender-neutral, built from plain monochrome clothes and foam board. The Plug wears a black shirt, pants and sneakers with a rectangular foam-board panel on the torso and two rounded silver foam prongs kept well away from the face. The Socket wears white or gray with an outlet panel showing painted openings. Keep both hairstyles simple and use clean graphic liner. A short fabric cord can link the two for photos, and I'd make it clip off with a hook-and-loop tab before walking. Hang every panel from adjustable straps so you can sit down, and remember that a flat board catches shoulders in a busy room.
26. Tooth Fairy And Dentist Couples Costume

Tooth Fairy and Dentist mixes sparkle with clean workwear. The Fairy wears a pale blue or white dress, silver flats, shimmery wings and a glittery crown, with soft curls or an updo, pearly makeup and a star wand, plus an oversized tooth cut from white craft foam. The Dentist wears blue scrubs, white sneakers, a light lab coat and a name badge, with neat hair and a giant toy toothbrush or cardboard toothpaste tube. Leave real dental instruments at home. Glitter from the crown will end up on the dentist's scrubs by the end of the night, and frankly that's part of the joke. If one of you already owns scrubs, it's nearly free.
27. Bob Ross And Painting Couples Costume

One of you becomes the cheerful TV painter and the other becomes the painting. The artist wears a pale blue button-down, relaxed jeans and brown shoes, with a curly brown wig and a full beard, plus a clean palette and a big cardboard brush. The Painting wears blue and green under a rectangular foam-board frame painted with mountains, trees and clouds, with natural hair and blue-green eye makeup to match. Brown or green sneakers keep the colours consistent. The frame should hang from padded shoulder straps and stop above the knee. Curly wigs flatten in a bag, so I'd fluff it with fingers, not a brush, before you leave.
28. Museum Curator And Painting Couples Costume

No character needed here: one refined curator and one living artwork. The Curator wears a black turtleneck, tailored trousers, loafers and minimal glasses, with neat hair, polished makeup and a clipboard bearing a homemade exhibit label. The Painting wears a jewel-toned dress or suit with matching shoes and artistic makeup in florals, geometric shapes or swirls, framed by an ornate light frame hung around the shoulders. I'd paint an original abstract design rather than copy sacred or culturally specific imagery. Spray-painted gold foam-board frames chip at the corners, so I seal them with a coat of clear varnish. The poses sell it: dramatic framing from one, a gesture toward the 'exhibit' from the other.
29. Cowboy And Alien Couples Costume

This is a playful crossover of Western and outer space. The Cowboy wears jeans, a plaid shirt, a suede-look vest, a bandana, a cowboy hat and brown boots, with sun-kissed makeup and a rope loop or plush horse. The Alien wears a silver jumpsuit or metallic top with leggings, platform sneakers and a reflective belt, plus green or silver face makeup, sleek hair or a bright wig and headband antennae. A cardboard flying-saucer bag is the Alien's prop. I'd leave out toy guns completely. Each of you gets a distinct look, and the story connects you.
30. Seventies Disco Dancers Couples Costume

Built for the dance floor, this pair avoids big handheld props on purpose. One of you wears a sequinned top, high-waisted bell-bottoms, platform shoes and tinted glasses; the other a colourful flared jumpsuit, a metallic belt, platforms and big hoops. Both go big on hair, with curls, feathered layers or a comfortable era wig, plus sparkly eyes and gloss. A mirrored-ball bag or a battery light-up accessory is plenty. I check two things: flares that stop just above the floor, and platforms with a wide, stable base. If you're unsure on platforms, regular shoes under removable covers look the same in the dark.
31. Eighties Workout Couples Costume

Neon workout gear is cheap and the comfiest thing on this list. Each of you wears leggings or bike shorts with a bright leotard, an oversized sweatshirt or a sleeveless top, then leg warmers, sweatbands, white sneakers and a small belt bag. High ponytails, crimped wigs or teased hair should be pinned off the face, with bold blue, pink and purple eyeshadow. Foam dumbbells or reusable water bottles work as props. You don't need to match exactly; I'd pick two neon colours and repeat them on both of you, which looks coordinated without being identical. Easy to shed layers when the room heats up.
32. Nineties Prom Couple Costume

This one recreates an awkward school-dance photo, and the dated details are the point. One of you wears a satin slip dress or a colourful floor-length gown, a cropped cardigan, kitten heels and a wrist corsage, with curled tendrils, butterfly clips, shimmery eyes and glossy lips. The other wears a roomy suit, a patterned vest, a dress shirt, polished shoes and a big boutonniere, with a centre part or neatly gelled hair. A cardboard photo frame with an invented event name and year is the prop. In thrift stores, I look for slightly shiny fabric and boxy shoulders. Any two people can wear either side, and the shoes need to be ones you can stand and dance in.
33. Regency Couple Costume

For a Regency pair, the empire waist and high collars do the work. One of you wears a floor-length empire-waist gown, short gloves, ballet flats and a fine shawl, with soft curls or a braided updo, natural makeup and a fan. The other wears high-waisted trousers, a white shirt, a patterned waistcoat, a tailored coat and riding-style boots, with a loosely tied neckcloth and swept hair. A small book or a handwritten invitation is the prop. Keep it as fictional characters rather than copying a real person. A nightgown-style empire dress can be very thin, so I'd add a slip and a warm shawl outdoors, and pick a coat you can remove indoors.
34. Pirate And Mermaid Couples Costume

Weathered pirate layers beside shimmering sea colour make a lively fantasy pair. The Pirate wears a loose white shirt, striped trousers, a vest, a sash, tall boots and a soft tricorn, with tousled hair, smudged liner and a treasure map or coin pouch. The Mermaid wears an iridescent scale-print skirt, a fitted aqua top, shell clips and metallic flats or boots, with glossy waves and blue, green and pearl makeup. A fin-shaped flare at the hem hints at a tail while letting her walk normally; a true fishtail skirt is a misery on stairs. Leave swords at home. Both outfits move freely, which is what you want at a public event.
35. Astronaut And Alien Couples Costume

A crisp space explorer and a brightly coloured visitor make an imaginative pair. The Astronaut wears a white jumpsuit with removable mission-style patches, silver gloves and white boots, with a light helmet carried under one arm, neat hair and a little silver makeup. Carrying the helmet is my strong advice; worn, it fogs up and you can't hear anyone. The Alien wears a metallic green, blue or purple jumpsuit with matching sneakers, a reflective belt and antennae, plus sleek hair or a vivid bob and shimmery makeup around the eyes and cheekbones. A clear bag of glow-in-the-dark stars makes a fun prop. Stretchy jumpsuits keep you both comfortable.
36. Archaeologist And Mummy Couples Costume

Explorer and mummy is practical kit beside a soft, stylized wrap. The Archaeologist wears khaki trousers, a button-down, a utility vest, a wide-brim hat and hiking boots, with natural hair, sun-kissed makeup and a notebook or cardboard map. The Mummy starts with cream leggings and a long-sleeve top, then wraps loose strips of soft beige fabric over them, with neutral sneakers, dusty brown eye makeup and hair streaked with washable white. I tack each strip at both ends with a few stitches so it doesn't unravel down the street, and keep strips clear of the hands and feet. Keep the face visible. A cardboard museum tag ties the two together, and it's warm enough for October.
37. Ringmaster And Circus Lion Couples Costume

Sharp red tailoring beside a soft animal look gives this pair its contrast. The Ringmaster wears black trousers, a fitted red jacket trimmed in gold, a white shirt, a bow tie and polished black boots, with a small top hat, neat hair, strong liner and a light hoop wrapped in ribbon. The Lion wears a tan sweatshirt and joggers with brown sneakers, plus a plush mane headpiece, rounded ears, a fabric tail and warm brown makeup around the nose and cheeks. Leave whips out. A plush mane is hot, so I'd build it on a headband rather than a full hood. A few gold details on the Lion pick up the jacket trim.
38. Detective And Clue Couples Costume

Here one of you is the investigator and the other is the evidence. The Detective wears a tan trench over dark trousers and a collared shirt, with loafers, a brimmed hat, a magnifying glass, neat hair and polished makeup. The Clue dresses in one vivid colour, with matching shoes and accessories, then pins light question marks, footprints and paper evidence labels all over. Paper labels tear and curl in damp air, so I print them on card or cut them from felt. Graphic liner and a headband topped with a big foam question mark finish the Clue, who carries a sealed envelope marked confidential. It's an original idea that needs no character knowledge at all.
39. Black Cat And Witch Couples Costume

Black cat and witch is the simplest pairing here, all everyday black clothing with purple accents. The Witch wears a long black dress or black trousers and a fitted blouse, striped tights, ankle boots and a wide-brim pointed hat, with soft waves, purple eyes, dark lipstick and a small broom. The Cat wears a black top, fitted trousers, black sneakers, ears and a bendable tail, with sleek hair, winged liner, a painted nose and whiskers. Matching purple collars, ribbons or gloves connect you. A wide witch hat blocks the view of whoever stands behind you in photos, so I'd tip it back a little or pick a slightly smaller brim. Keep it playful.
40. Pumpkin And Scarecrow Couples Costume

The last pair is a cozy harvest one. The Pumpkin wears an orange sweater dress or sweatshirt with matching pants, green tights or socks and brown ankle boots, plus a green leaf collar, a curled stem headband, warm orange makeup and soft waves. The Scarecrow wears denim overalls, a plaid shirt, a straw hat, work boots and fabric patches, with natural hair or loose braids and simple brown stitch lines in face paint. Carry a basket of artificial leaves rather than food. Real straw sheds everywhere and pokes through fabric, so I use soft raffia at the cuffs and collar instead. Both of you can hide thermals underneath for an outdoor night.
Wearing Foam Boards and Frames Without Losing Your Evening
Several of these pairs hang a panel or frame on one person: the sandwich, the plug and socket, the paintings. Those are the costumes I see taken off first, usually because of how they were attached, not the idea.
- Hang the weight from the shoulders with wide ribbon or webbing straps. Thin cord cuts into the shoulder within an hour.
- Stop the panel above the knee and above the hip bone at the sides, so you can sit and climb stairs.
- Round every corner with scissors. Square foam-board corners jab the people next to you.
- Seal painted cardboard with clear varnish or wrap it in packing tape if there's any chance of rain. Wet cardboard sags in minutes.
When Only One of You Wants Face Paint
It's very common for one partner to love makeup and the other to refuse it. That's fine. Let the face paint go to whoever wants it, and give the other person the wig, hat or prop instead. The Detective and Clue, Chef and Lobster or Gardener and Flower all work with one painted face and one clean one.
For whoever does wear it, I'd patch-test any cream paint on the inside of the wrist a day ahead, set it with translucent powder so it doesn't end up on the other person's shoulder, and take it off with an oil-based cleanser rather than scrubbing. Green and blue are the shades that stain skin most, so give them a little extra time to lift.
Agree on the Pair First, Then Share a Colour
The easiest way through all 40 is to settle on a theme you both genuinely like, then repeat one colour or material on both of you so the outfits look connected. Clothing is the base, but wigs, makeup, shoes and one prop are what turn plain pieces into a costume. I always ask couples to wear the big accessories around the house the night before, because that's when you find out a headpiece hits the door frame or a panel stops you sitting down. Thrifted clothes, closet basics, felt, cardboard and removable fabric tape cover most of this list. Pick the pair that makes you both laugh, and the details will follow.
