Most heroines are easier to dress than they look. Strip a character down and you usually find three things doing the work: a colour block, one emblem and a hair detail. Get those right and people know who you are before they see the boots. Below are 35 women's superhero costumes, from the big classics to newer favourites, each with a base, hair, makeup, accessories and a shoe that you can actually walk in. I've built most of them from activewear, thrifted jackets and craft foam, and I've noted where I'd add coverage, where a cape gets in the way, and which pieces fail first.

Turning Gym Clothes Into a Hero Uniform
Nearly every look below starts with leggings and a fitted long-sleeve top, because performance fabric stretches, breathes and photographs smoothly. The skill is in how you add the panels and emblems. I use three methods, depending on how long the costume needs to last.
- Fabric tape or removable decals for one night. Fast and fully reversible, but corners lift as the fabric stretches, so round off every corner with scissors before you apply them.
- Felt or stretch-fabric appliqué for a costume you'll wear again. Stitch it on with a small zigzag or by hand; glue goes stiff and cracks on stretch fabric.
- Fabric paint for webbing, lines and fine detail. Put cardboard inside the garment, stretch it slightly while painting, and let it cure fully before wearing.
Placement matters more than people expect. I put on the base, stand in front of a mirror and pin the emblem where it reads at chest height, because a logo placed on a flat garment usually ends up too low once it's on a body. And take a photo from across the room. If you can't tell who you are from there, the colour blocks need to be bolder, not the details finer.
1. Wonder Woman Costume With Red Cape

Wonder Woman reads from a fitted red top, a gold belt and a blue skirt with white stars, so spend your effort on the belt. A flat gold belt looks cheap under party lights; I cut a curved one from craft foam, paint it metallic and back it with elastic so it sits on the waist. A structured red cape adds coverage and the heroic outline. Dark loose waves or a long wavy wig, a gold headband, wide cuffs and a light golden rope. Red knee-high boots are the classic choice, though flat ones are kinder for walking. Warm red lipstick and a hint of gold shadow, with shorts under the skirt.
2. Captain Marvel Costume With Blue Jumpsuit

Captain Marvel lives or dies on her colour blocking, which is why I'd start with a blue jumpsuit or blue leggings with a long-sleeve athletic top. The red panels go on with fabric tape for a one-night look; if you want to reuse the base, cut them from stretch fabric and stitch along the edges so they move with you. A large gold star on the chest, a short red sash at the waist, red gloves and gold cuffs. A shoulder-length blonde bob, natural or wig, with peach blush and neutral lips. Red sneakers beat ankle boots if you'll be on your feet for hours.
3. Black Widow Costume With Utility Belt

The utility belt is what turns a black jumpsuit into Black Widow. Choose a wide belt with red accents and small empty pouches; real pouches tempt you to fill them, and a heavy belt drags a stretch jumpsuit down at the back. Fingerless gloves, black cuffs and a fitted vest add depth while keeping it family-friendly. A short copper-red curled wig or your own red hair smoothed to the shoulder. Matte skin, taupe shadow, black liner and a muted rose lip. Combat boots with flexible soles make it a good pick for an outdoor party on a cool night.
4. Scarlet Witch Costume With Red Coat

A long crimson coat with a shaped waist is the main purchase here, and it's worth finding one with weight to it so it swings when you walk. Under it go black leggings, a burgundy fitted top, knee-high black boots and dark fingerless gloves. I cut the crown from flexible craft foam and hold it with a thin elastic under the hair; a stiff card crown slides forward the moment you nod. Long auburn waves, berry and soft red shadow kept polished rather than gory, and a deep rose lip. Small red LED lights cupped in the palms make a nice energy effect for photos. The coat is warm, so keep the layers under it thin.
5. Supergirl Costume With Blue Dress

Supergirl looks fresh in a fitted blue long-sleeve dress with a flared skirt. I'd use a removable adhesive for the shield only if the dress is cotton; on stretch fabric it lifts at the edges, so a few hand stitches around the emblem hold better. Cut the red cape to about knee length so you aren't stepping on it. A slim gold belt, nude tights and flat red boots, with soft blonde waves or a golden wig with a side part. Clean, luminous skin and rosy lips. For more coverage, a blue top with a skater skirt and opaque tights reads just as clearly.
6. Batgirl Costume With Purple Cape

Purple and yellow carry Batgirl, and the cowl is where people get stuck. My shortcut is a purple hooded jacket or short cape over black leggings and a purple long-sleeve top, with a flexible purple eye mask instead of a full cowl, which is hot and narrows your view. A yellow utility belt and bat emblem do the rest. Red or auburn hair in a low ponytail sits neatly under the hood. Plum shadow and a natural pink lip, purple gloves and lace-up boots, and yellow boot covers for stronger comic colours. Keep the cape above the knees at busy events.
7. Catwoman Costume With Black Catsuit

A catsuit is the classic Catwoman base, but I'd only recommend one if you've tried it on sitting down. Faux-leather leggings with a fitted black turtleneck give the same line and are far easier to wear for a whole evening. A cropped black jacket adds structure if it's cold. Cat ears and a small eye mask leave your hair and makeup on show. A smooth ponytail or loose waves, winged liner, soft contour and berry lipstick. Black gloves and a slim belt add texture, and flat knee-high boots are a better idea than narrow heels. No prop needed.
8. Spider-Gwen Costume With White Hood

The pink-lined hood is the detail that makes Spider-Gwen read, so line it properly rather than gluing fabric inside. A white sleeveless hoodie over a black long-sleeve top and leggings is the base. I'd hand-tack bright pink jersey into the hood along the seam so it shows when the hood falls back. Turquoise ballet-style shoe covers or teal sneakers, and a printed white mask you wear for photos and push up when you need to see. Blonde bob tucked under the hood, waterproof mascara and tinted balm, plus pink-and-white gloves. Stretch athletic fabric keeps it comfortable for a dance-floor party.
9. She-Hulk Costume With Purple Bodysuit

She-Hulk is about one decision: green paint, or green fabric. Covering your arms in body-safe green makeup looks great and takes time, and it transfers onto everything you touch. Green tights, sleeves and gloves are my usual recommendation, with makeup only on the face and neck. The base is a purple-and-white athletic bodysuit or a fitted top and leggings. A long, thick dark-green wig, purple shadow, deep green liner and a plum lip. White cuffs and purple-and-white sneakers or ankle boots. A purple tennis skirt or shorts over the leggings adds coverage.
10. Storm Costume With White Cape

I attach Storm's white cape at the wrists as well as the shoulders, so it opens like wings when you raise your arms. That move is half the character. Under it, a fitted black jumpsuit or leggings with a structured long-sleeve top and silver trim at the waist and shoulders. A long white wig is essential; brush synthetic white wigs gently with a wide-tooth comb, since they tangle and yellow near heat. Silver shadow, sharp liner and a cool berry lip. Skip coloured contact lenses. Silver cuffs, knee-high boots with stable soles, and a calf-length cape you can manage in a crowd.
11. Phoenix Costume With Gold Sash

This Phoenix is the green-and-gold Jean Grey uniform, so the base is a fitted green jumpsuit or green leggings and long-sleeve top. A wide gold sash and a gold bird emblem cut from craft foam or fabric give the classic outline. The long yellow gloves and knee-high boots are what make it look like a full uniform rather than green clothes, so don't skip them. Long red waves or an auburn wig, copper and gold shadow, and brick-red lipstick. A short gold cape is optional. Avoid dangling accessories; the colour combination is strong enough by itself.
12. Rogue Costume With Green Jacket

Rogue's white streak matters more than anything she wears. A clip-in white extension placed right at the front hairline is the easiest fix if you don't want to bleach; clip it under a section of your own hair so the comb doesn't show. The outfit is forgiving: black leggings or a jumpsuit, a cropped green jacket with yellow panels, a yellow belt and gloves, and black knee-high boots with yellow covers if you want the detail. Bronze shadow and a muted red lip. Slightly relaxed layers mean you can wear thermals underneath on a cold night.
13. Jubilee Costume With Yellow Coat

Jubilee is the thrift-store hero of the list. Denim or blue bike shorts, a bright pink top and a long yellow trench coat are the base, with pink leggings or opaque tights for warmth. Blue or white high-tops suit the streetwear feel. Pink sunglasses are the one item you can't skip, and they sit on your head indoors. A voluminous shoulder-length style or black bob wig, pink and purple shadow, glossy lips and a little cosmetic glitter at the eyes. Fingerless gloves and big hoops, and every piece goes back into your everyday wardrobe afterwards.
14. Wasp Costume With Yellow Wings

The wings are the tricky part of a Wasp costume, and I never attach them straight to the clothing. Mount them on a light backpack-style harness of clear elastic so the weight sits across the shoulders and you can take them off in crowded rooms. The base is black leggings and a fitted black top with yellow panels, or a black-and-yellow jumpsuit. A smooth dark bob, gold shadow, black liner and neutral lips, plus black gloves and a slim belt. Black ankle boots with yellow laces. Choose compact wings that point upward so you can still get through a door.
15. Mighty Thor Costume With Red Cape

Mighty Thor is an armour costume that doesn't need real armour. A silver chest panel over a black sleeveless top and leggings, circular silver accents, a wide metallic belt and foam cuffs give the effect. I'd seal craft foam with a flexible primer before silver paint, or it cracks the first time you bend your arm. A knee-length red cape for the outline and coverage. Long blonde waves with small braids at the temples, cool silver shadow and a berry lip. Black boots with silver covers. Leave the hammer at home; the cape and colours carry it.
16. Shuri Black Panther Costume With Purple Details

Shuri's look is technical, so the lines matter. On a black jumpsuit or fitted top and trousers, I map the purple and silver geometric lines in chalk first, then lay fabric tape along them around the neckline, shoulders and waist. Freehand tape ends up wavy. Wear your natural hair in braids, twists or a textured updo that feels like you. Purple liner, highlighted cheeks and a deep berry lip. Silver cuffs and a sculpted foam collar give the futuristic texture, finished with combat boots or flexible high-tops. A removable black mask works for photos.
17. Gamora Costume With Burgundy Jacket

Green skin is the hard part of Gamora, and you have options. Full body-safe green makeup on the face and hands looks best; a lighter green foundation along the edges of the face is a gentler version that's easier to remove. Either way, the burgundy jacket over a black top and fitted trousers does most of the costume work. Long dark hair with purple or burgundy ends comes easily from clip-in extensions. Smoky plum shadow and a dark rose lip, fingerless gloves, a slim belt and lace-up boots. Zip the jacket over a thermal on a cold night.
18. Mantis Costume With Green Bodysuit

Mantis is softer than most heroes here, which suits anyone who doesn't want armour. A dark-green jumpsuit or a green top and trousers with black side panels is the base, and the antennae are the costume. I make them from lightweight wire wrapped in green felt, glued to a padded headband, and keep them short; tall ones snag on doorframes and pull the band back. Straight, centre-parted black hair, pale foundation, green shadow and a soft pink lip. Green cuffs and black ankle boots finish it.
19. Ms. Marvel Costume With Blue Tunic

Kamala Khan's uniform is one of the most modest heroine looks, and it moves well. A knee-length blue tunic over red leggings with a gold lightning bolt on the front, plus a flowing red scarf wrapped at the neck or tied at the shoulders like a short cape. I'd choose stretch jersey for the tunic; woven cotton rides up when you lift your arms. Gold cuffs and a small blue eye mask. Natural dark waves, peach blush and a berry-tinted balm, with red high-tops or flat ankle boots. It's an easy fit for school and community events.
20. America Chavez Costume With Denim Jacket

America Chavez is built almost entirely from clothes you might already own: black leggings or shorts, a red tee and a blue denim jacket. The big white star on the back is the signature, and I cut it from iron-on fabric or felt and stitch round the edge, since iron-on alone tends to lift on stiff denim. Smaller star patches on the sleeves, red, white and blue high-tops, and loose side-parted waves. Strong brows, warm bronzer and a red-tinted balm. Small hoops and fingerless gloves add attitude. A great last-minute choice in any weather.
21. Kate Bishop Hawkeye Costume With Purple Jacket

Kate Bishop is sporty and purple from top to toe. Black leggings and a fitted purple top under a cropped purple jacket or long vest, a dark utility belt and black fingerless gloves set the active look. A high ponytail with loose face-framing pieces, soft purple shadow, clean liner and a natural berry lip. Combat boots or purple high-tops. I'd put a small target symbol on the belt rather than carrying a bow, since a prop bow is awkward in a crowd and many venues ask you to leave it at the door. A black thermal underneath handles the cold.
22. Yelena Belova Costume With White Vest

White is unforgiving, so Yelena is a costume where fabric choice really matters. Thin white jersey shows everything underneath under flash, so I'd pick an opaque, heavier white jumpsuit or cargo trousers with a long-sleeve white top, and wear nude base layers. A structured white or cream utility vest, a black belt with empty pouches, black cuffs and gloves, and sturdy black boots. A low braided ponytail or pale-blonde wig with a centre part. Matte skin and a rose-nude lip. Swap the vest for a white jacket if it's cold, and keep a stain wipe in your bag.
23. Nebula Costume With Burgundy Bodysuit

Nebula is a makeup costume first. Body-safe blue makeup on the face and any visible skin, with silver geometric lines around the forehead and one eye, makes the character. A bald cap gives the closest result but is fiddly; a smooth blue head wrap is much easier for most people. Keep the line design simple. Blue makeup transfers readily, so I set it with translucent powder and a setting spray and patch-test everything a day ahead. The clothes are a fitted burgundy jumpsuit or top and leggings with dark-purple shoulder panels, silver trim, a wide belt, burgundy gloves and black ankle boots.
24. Valkyrie Costume With Blue Cape

Valkyrie's colour comes from one rich royal-blue cape, so attach it securely at the shoulders with sturdy snaps; pins pull through and leave holes. Under it, black fitted trousers with a sleeveless black tunic and silver geometric panels at the waist, shoulders and neckline, in lightweight foam or metallic fabric. A high braided ponytail or half-up braid. Silver shadow, defined cheekbones and a deep rose lip. Silver cuffs and black knee-high boots, no props required. Round off every panel edge so nothing catches on the cape when you sit.
25. Invisible Woman Costume With Blue Jumpsuit

Invisible Woman is clean and adapts easily to any body shape, because it's mostly a royal-blue jumpsuit or blue leggings with a fitted long-sleeve top. Black side panels and a white-and-black number-four emblem on the chest; I cut the emblem slightly larger than you'd think, since a small one disappears from across a room. A wide black belt separates a two-piece base neatly. A blonde bob or loose waves, pale-blue shadow and soft nude lips. Black gloves and ankle boots. A light, rounded transparent acrylic disc makes a fun force-field prop for photos.
26. Jessica Jones Costume With Leather Jacket

Jessica Jones is the hero for people who hate costumes. Distressed jeans, a gray tee or tank, a black faux-leather jacket and a long charcoal scarf are the whole outfit. I'd look for a jacket that's a little worn rather than shiny-new; it reads more like the character. Dark ankle boots with a flat or sturdy heel. Loose, slightly messy waves, light foundation, smudged brown liner and a muted berry lip. A vintage shoulder bag finishes it. It relies on attitude, so I suggest it for a casual party where a bodysuit would feel like too much.
27. Squirrel Girl Costume With Brown Tail

The tail makes Squirrel Girl, and it's also the part that goes wrong most. Pinned straight to leggings, a big fluffy tail drags the waistband down within an hour. I mount it on a separate sturdy belt with a stiff wire or foam core inside so it curves up behind the shoulders instead of trailing on the floor. Brown leggings, a tan fitted top and a cropped brown jacket, with a wide belt carrying a few light faux acorns. Thick auburn curls or a curly wig, squirrel ears, copper shadow and rosy lips, plus brown lace-up boots or tan high-tops.
28. Silk Costume With Red Face Covering

Silk is red and black over a simple athletic base: black leggings and a fitted long-sleeve top, with red web-patterned panels on the chest and arms in stretch fabric or flexible fabric paint. Fabric paint stiffens as it dries, so on a stretchy top I'd stretch the fabric slightly over cardboard while painting so the web doesn't crack when worn. A wide red scarf wraps the lower face for photos and drops down when you want to breathe. Long dark hair, red lipstick and sharp black liner, red gloves and ankle boots with red laces, and a small spider emblem.
29. Spider-Woman Costume With Yellow Details

Spider-Woman's red-and-yellow scheme is bold and simple to replicate. A fitted red jumpsuit or red leggings and long-sleeve top, with yellow panels across the chest and waist and yellow triangles under the arms to suggest her gliding shape. I sew those underarm triangles from soft stretch fabric; rigid wings would stop you lowering your arms. A small red eye mask, long straight centre-parted dark hair, gold shadow, strong liner and brick-red lips. Yellow gloves and red boots with yellow trim. Red joggers and an athletic top work if you'd like a looser fit.
30. Starfire Costume With Purple Skirt

Starfire's hair is the challenge: long, vivid red and big. A good quality wig is the simplest answer, and I'd tease the roots lightly and spray it for volume rather than try to colour your own. The outfit is a fitted purple top with a knee-length skirt or purple leggings, silver panels at the neckline, waist and wrists, and purple knee-high or ankle boots. Purple and silver shadow with plenty of highlighter and a rose lip. Green costume gems on the collar and cuffs suggest her energy. Add opaque tights or fitted shorts under the skirt.
31. Bumblebee Costume With Blue Wings

Bumblebee mixes black and yellow with bright blue accents. Black leggings and a fitted yellow top with black side panels, a cropped black vest, and a blue belt with matching cuffs. The small translucent blue wings go on a light harness, never pinned to the vest, which sags under the weight. Choose narrow wings that point up rather than out. A high ponytail, puff or braids, gold shadow with blue liner and glossy pink lips. Black ankle boots with yellow socks or laces. A blue eye mask is optional and often more comfortable left off.
32. Vixen Costume With Orange Jumpsuit

Vixen's palette of orange, black and gold is warm and flattering on many skin tones. An orange jumpsuit or orange leggings and long-sleeve top with black side panels and a wide gold belt sets the shape. Gold cuffs, a statement necklace and a hint of animal-print trim suggest her powers without masks or faux fur. Wear your hair in the style that suits you. Bronze shadow, sharp liner, highlighter and deep berry lips. I'd ground the bright orange with black knee-high or ankle boots; orange shoes make the whole outfit look like one block.
33. Elastigirl Costume With Red Jumpsuit

Elastigirl suits anyone who wants simple and stretchy. A fitted red jumpsuit or red leggings and long-sleeve top, black briefs or fitted shorts over them, a black belt and yellow oval emblem. Black gloves, a flexible eye mask and black knee-high boots finish the animated colours. A smooth chin-length brown bob, wig if needed, with peach blush and natural pink lips. I always choose four-way stretch for this one, because a two-way stretch suit pulls tight across the shoulders the moment you reach. It slots neatly into a family group as well.
34. Violet Parr Costume With Red Bodysuit

Violet Parr uses the same red-and-black uniform with small character tweaks. A fitted red bodysuit or long-sleeve top and leggings, black shorts over the base, a narrow black belt with a yellow oval emblem, black gloves and boots, and a flexible eye mask. Her hair is the real signal: long, straight and dark, with one side swept forward over part of the face. I'd pin that section in place, or you'll be pushing it back all night. Matte skin, lavender-gray shadow and muted pink lips. A clear umbrella or acrylic disc makes a fun invisibility prop for photos.
35. Ladybug Superhero Costume With Red Spots

Ladybug closes the list with spots, and spacing them neatly is the job. On a red jumpsuit or leggings and long-sleeve top, I lay out black fabric decals on the flat garment first and photograph the layout before peeling anything, so both sides match. A slim red eye mask with smaller spots, and dark blue-black hair in two low pigtails tied with red ribbons. Rosy cheeks, black liner and red-tinted balm. Red gloves and ankle boots, plus a small round red purse for essentials. The open lower face and flat shoes make it easy to wear for hours.
Wigs, Capes and Masks After Hour Three
Hero costumes rarely fail on the clothes. They fail on the three accessories that hang off you.
Wigs
A cheap synthetic wig sheds and tangles at the nape where it rubs on a collar or cape. I brush it out with a wide-tooth comb before wearing, trim any long fibres at the back, and anchor it with two bobby pins through the wig's combs into a flat braid or a wig cap. Keep synthetic wigs away from candles and heaters; the fibres frizz or melt quickly.
Capes
A cape tied at the throat pulls back on your neck every time someone stands on it. I attach capes to the shoulders with snaps or hook-and-loop tape, so they come away safely, and cut them a little shorter than looks ideal in the mirror. Knee length is about right for walking; anything floor-length belongs on a stage.
Masks and coloured skin
Eye masks narrow your side vision, so plan to push yours up on stairs and in the street. For green, blue or purple face makeup, patch-test on the inside of the wrist a day early, set it with translucent powder, and remove it with an oil-based cleanser before soap. A dark collar or scarf hides any transfer at the neckline.
Start With the Colours, Not the Props
A hero costume that works starts with the character's colours on a base you can move in, then adds hair, makeup, shoes and one or two accessories. You don't need expensive armour. Athletic separates, a thrifted jacket, stitched emblems and flexible foam will get you further than a shop-bought suit that doesn't fit. Test any makeup a day ahead, wear shoes you've walked in, and make sure capes, tails, wings and masks can come off quickly. Adjust coverage and fit to suit your body. A hero you can comfortably wear all night looks more convincing than a perfect replica you can't wait to take off.
