The Puppet, also called the Marionette, is one of the easiest characters to sew for because the whole design runs on two colors and a face. You need a long black body, white stripes at the wrists and ankles, three white buttons down the front, and that white mask with black eyes, red cheeks and purple tear streaks. Get those right and people know who you are from across a room, even if the rest is a sweatshirt. I've laid out the versions below from the simplest closet build to the bigger prop-heavy ones, with kids', teen, plus-size, warm and cold weather options in between. Each one covers the clothing, hair, face, shoes and props, so pick by how much time and sewing you want to put in.

Making a Puppet Mask You Can Actually See Through
The mask is where most Puppet costumes go wrong. People copy the small black eye shapes exactly, then spend the night peering through two pinholes and walking into door frames. When I make one, the painted black eye shapes stay the size of the character's, but the real eye openings underneath are cut much larger, often as a wide horizontal slot, and covered with black mesh or black sheer fabric glued to the back. From a few feet away the mesh reads as solid black, and from inside you can see the floor.
The build, step by step
- Trace your face shape on paper first: forehead to chin, cheekbone to cheekbone. Hold it up to a mirror and mark where your pupils actually sit.
- Cut the shape from 2 to 4 mm EVA foam. Warm it gently with a heat gun or hair dryer and press it over a bowl or your own face (over cling film) so it curves.
- Cut the eye openings oversized, then glue black mesh behind them. Leave a gap under the nose for breathing.
- Seal the foam before painting. Unsealed foam drinks paint and stays blotchy; a few thin coats of a flexible sealer or white glue thinned with water fix that.
- Paint white first, then the black eyes, round red cheeks, purple tear streaks running from the eyes down, and the red smile.
- Glue a strip of craft foam or felt inside at the forehead and cheekbones so the mask sits off your skin, then attach wide elastic at temple height.
Hot glue is fine for the padding but lets go in cold air, so if you'll be outdoors I'd use contact cement for anything that holds the elastic. And try the mask on in a dim room before the night. If you can't read a phone screen held at waist height, cut the openings wider.
1. Classic Puppet Fnaf Costume

This is the build I'd start anyone on: a fitted black long-sleeve bodysuit, or a black shirt tucked into leggings, with three large white buttons down the torso. Striped sleeves go over the forearms and striped socks over the leggings, then white gloves and light black shoes. The face is a smooth white mask with black eye holes, round red cheeks, purple tears and red lips. Tuck your hair under a black wig cap or a hood so nothing breaks the silhouette. I keep the music box small, because a big prop is the first thing you end up putting down and forgetting.
2. Easy DIY Puppet Fnaf Costume

You don't need a sewing machine for this one. A plain black turtleneck and black leggings or straight-leg pants make the base, and three white felt circles go on with safety pins or fabric tape. I pin felt rather than glue it, since felt letters and shapes peel straight off polyester knits once the glue gets warm from your body. Cut the feet off cheap striped knee socks and you have arm and leg stripes in five minutes. White winter gloves, black sneakers, a craft-foam mask on soft elastic painted with acrylic, a black beanie and a decorated cardboard box finish it.
3. Last-Minute Puppet Fnaf Costume

If it's Halloween afternoon and you have nothing, wear a black sweatshirt, black joggers, white gloves and black trainers. Cut three circles from paper plates or cardstock and stick them on with double-sided fashion tape. White ribbon wrapped around the lower sleeves and pant legs reads as stripes from a few feet away. For the face, white cream makeup, black shadow blended around the eyes, red cheek circles, thin purple lines running down and a slim red lip. A small box in black paper and white ribbon is enough of a prop. The colors are doing the work here, so neat edges matter more than detail.
4. Puppet Fnaf Costume With Face Makeup

Going mask-free means the makeup carries the whole character, so I'd spend your time there. A black unitard, jumpsuit, or long-sleeve top with leggings is the base, with striped arm warmers, striped knee socks, white gloves and low black boots. Hair goes in a smooth low bun or under a black head covering. Lay the white base thin and build it, because thick white cream creases on a warm night and cracks around the mouth. Black around each eye, round red cheeks, two vertical purple tears and a thin red mouth, then press translucent powder over the lot. Three oversized buttons and a small music-box purse keep your hands free.
5. Puppet Fnaf Costume With Foam Mask

Thin EVA foam is my favorite mask material for this character. It's light, it takes a gentle curve with a heat gun, and it doesn't fog or sweat the way hard plastic does. Wear a plain black bodysuit with slightly loose sleeves and legs to stretch out the marionette shape, and sew or glue white fabric rings around the wrists and ankles. Add three dimensional foam buttons, white gloves and soft black slip-ons. Round the mask edges, cut the eye openings wider than feels right, seal and paint it white, then add the black eyes, red cheeks, purple streaks and lips. Use wide elastic so it doesn't dig in, keep your hair under a black hood, and carry a light striped gift box for photos.
6. Puppet Fnaf Dress Costume

A long-sleeve black skater dress around knee length turns the Puppet into a dress costume without losing anything. Sew the three white buttons on rather than gluing, since the dress moves more than a bodysuit does. Striped arm warmers, opaque black tights and striped leg warmers handle the limbs, and low block-heel ankle boots or black ballet flats keep you comfortable for hours. A sleek black bob wig or a low ponytail suits it. White face makeup with soft black eyes, purple tears, red cheeks and a narrow red smile, plus white gloves and a little music-box handbag. The flared skirt lets you sit and walk without any fuss.
7. Puppet Fnaf Tutu Costume

The tutu adds bounce, and it's the version kids and teens tend to ask for. Wear the layered black tutu over bike shorts or opaque leggings, with a fitted black long-sleeve top and the three buttons. Striped arm warmers and over-the-knee socks do the limbs, white gloves brighten the hands, and black lace-up sneakers or flat ankle boots beat heels for a night on your feet. Two neat buns under a black headband give a doll-like outline. Paint a white base, smoky black eyes, red circles and purple tears, and carry a white half-mask if you want one for photos. I keep the tulle around knee length; longer layers snag on everything.
8. Puppet Fnaf Jumpsuit Costume

A one-piece jumpsuit solves the problem of a shirt riding up every time you raise your arms. Pick a long-sleeve style with a front zip and cover the zip line with three removable white buttons. Striped fabric cuffs at wrists and ankles, white cotton gloves and flexible black combat-style boots finish the body, with a close black hood hiding your hair. Wear a light white mask with generous eye openings or paint the face in white, black, red and purple. I like narrow strings from shoulder to wrist cuff for pictures, but I unclip them before walking through a crowd. A small music-box crossbody bag gives you somewhere to put your phone.
9. Puppet Fnaf Skirt Costume

This one barely reads as a costume until you see the face, which some people prefer. Pair a black pleated midi skirt with a fitted black mock-neck top and line three white buttons down the front. Striped fingerless gloves and striped tights carry the pattern, and black platform loafers with cushioned insoles give a doll-like finish. A straight black wig with blunt bangs, or your own hair half-up, both work. Concentrate the white makeup through the center of the face so it fades out near the hairline, then add soft black eyes, red cheeks and purple lines. A compact white mask can hang from a ribbon at your hip, and a small black bag painted like a striped gift box is the prop.
10. Puppet Fnaf Pants Costume

Separates suit anyone who hates bodysuits. Wear high-waisted black trousers with a fitted black button-front shirt, and swap the three middle buttons for oversized white ones. I'd sew those on with a shank so they sit proud of the placket instead of pulling it. Striped socks show above polished black lace-ups, with matching striped cuffs under the shirt sleeves and white gloves. Slick your hair back or put on a black skullcap before the white mask, or use makeup with red cheeks, dark eyes, purple tears and a precise red mouth. A slim black blazer adds warmth, and a flat music-box clutch is easier in a crowd than a box.
11. Glam Puppet Fnaf Costume

Sequins and satin push the Puppet toward a party look while the colors stay true. Choose a black sequin jumpsuit, or a sparkly long-sleeve top and matching trousers, with three pearl-like white buttons, striped cuffs and socks, white satin gloves and black glitter ankle boots. A high ponytail wrapped in black ribbon or a glossy black bob wig suits it. Go for a luminous white base rather than chalky opaque paint, then dramatic black eyes, violet tears, red cheek circles and a glossy red lip. A few silver highlights around the cheeks are plenty. Sequins scratch the inner arm, so I'd line the sleeves or wear a thin top underneath.
12. Velvet Puppet Fnaf Costume

Velvet gives the plain black body some depth, and it hides lint far better than cheap polyester knit. A velvet tunic or jumpsuit with three flat white buttons is the base. Flat buttons matter here because domed ones sink into the pile and look smaller. Striped knit arm warmers, striped tights, white gloves and matte black ankle boots balance the sheen, with a shoulder-length black wig parted in the middle. Wear a light white mask with red cheeks, purple streaks and black eyes, or paint those details and finish with setting spray. Carry a small velvet gift-box bag with white ribbon handles. The fabric catches light in photos while the graphic face stays clean.
13. Sequin Puppet Fnaf Costume

Want a Puppet that catches the light across a party room? Wear a black sequin mini dress over opaque black leggings, then sew three large matte white buttons on the front so they stand out from the sparkle. Striped sleeves, striped knee-highs, white gloves and simple black sneakers finish the body, and the hair stays sleek in a wig, low bun or ponytail. Use pearly white face makeup, dark eye shapes, red cheeks, purple tears and a thin red smile. Keep loose craft glitter well away from your eyes; cosmetic shimmer on the cheekbones is the safer choice, and it migrates less. A small black purse with white stripes and a detachable white mask round it off.
14. Streetwear Puppet Fnaf Costume

If you want something that still feels like your own clothes, layer an oversized black hoodie over black cargo pants and put three white fabric circles down the front. Wear a striped long-sleeve top underneath so the pattern peeks out at the wrists, and continue it with striped socks and black high-tops. White fingerless gloves let you use your phone and eat. Pull the hood up over a black beanie and paint the face instead of masking it, so your side vision stays clear on dark streets. White face, black eyes, red cheeks, purple lines and a red mouth, plus a black crossbody bag painted with white gift-box stripes, and you can walk all evening.
15. Gothic Puppet Fnaf Costume

The gothic version leans on fashion details instead of gore. A long black dress with a high neck, fitted sleeves and a softly flared hem is the base, with three white fabric buttons, striped wrist cuffs, striped tights and black buckled boots. White gloves trimmed in black make the hands look theatrical. Go for a straight black wig with blunt bangs or a tidy braided crown. Paint an ivory base, elongated black eyes, muted red cheeks, narrow purple tears and a controlled red smile. I'd put the mask on a black handle as a photo prop, since a long dress plus limited vision on stairs is a bad mix. A music-box bag and removable shoulder ribbons finish it.
16. Pastel Puppet Fnaf Costume

Pastels are my suggestion for anyone who wants the character without the creepiness, and for daytime school events. Start with a charcoal or soft black sweater dress over pale gray leggings, then swap the stark stripes for lavender and white arm warmers and socks. Add three white buttons, white gloves and lavender high-tops, with a black wig that fades to purple at the ends. A pale base, smoky gray eyes, rosy cheeks, light purple tears and a muted red lip keep the face soft. The one risk is drifting so far that nobody can tell who you are, so I always keep the three buttons and the tear lines. A lavender gift box tied with white ribbon is the prop.
17. Neon Puppet Fnaf Costume

This version is built for black lights and dark rooms. Wear a matte black jumpsuit so the bright details have something to pop against, and add reflective white buttons, black-and-white striped sleeves and narrow purple piping down the outer legs. White gloves and black sneakers with purple or red laces finish the body, with a black hood or a short wig streaked with violet. Paint the white face with skin-safe makeup, then graphic black eyes, bold purple tears, red cheeks and lips. Only use glow or UV products that are labeled for cosmetic use. For the striped box, battery LED tape works well, but tuck every wire and the battery pack inside so nothing dangles.
18. White Puppet Fnaf Costume

Flipping the colors makes a clever alternate Puppet, as long as the face stays the same. Wear a white long-sleeve jumpsuit with black-and-white striped cuffs, and swap the white buttons for three large black circles. Black gloves and white sneakers with dark soles follow the reversal. A straight white wig is dramatic, though a black wig keeps more of the original contrast. Use a pale base, deep black eyes, bright red cheeks, purple tears and red lips, and carry a white gift box tied with black ribbon. White stretch fabric goes see-through under flash and stage lights, so I always check it with a phone photo and wear nude layers underneath.
19. Purple Accent Puppet Fnaf Costume

Purple is the color that makes the Puppet look sad, so pulling it through the outfit is a smart way to vary the design. Wear a black fitted top and wide-leg pants with three white buttons, then purple-and-white striped arm warmers and black-and-white striped socks. White gloves and black platform sneakers finish the body. A shoulder-length black wig with thin violet streaks ties the hair to the face. Paint a smooth white base, black eyes, red cheek circles and longer purple tears, and keep the lips narrow so the face doesn't get busy. A slim purple ribbon at the waist and a purple music-box purse with white stars or stripes complete it.
20. Red Accent Puppet Fnaf Costume

Red is the other accent the character already owns, and it's easy to push. Wear a black long-sleeve shift dress over leggings, with three crisp white buttons, striped arm coverings and socks, white gloves and red lace-up sneakers. Clip thin red ribbons into a black bob wig near the temples. White face makeup, matte black eyes, bold red cheek circles, purple tears and a red mouth, with nothing extra around them, so the red reads as deliberate. A black gift box with a wide red ribbon is the prop. On a cold night a fitted red turtleneck under the dress adds warmth, as long as the striped cuffs still show.
21. Plus Size Puppet Fnaf Costume

You don't need skin-tight spandex to get the Puppet's long line. A soft black tunic with side slits over stretchy leggings or relaxed trousers gives the length without clinging, and the slits stop it pulling across the hips when you sit. Light felt buttons, striped arm warmers and socks, white gloves and supportive black sneakers or wide-fit boots finish it. Pull your hair back, wrap it in black, or wear a light bob wig. Use breathable makeup for the white base, black eyes, red cheeks and purple tears, and a crossbody music-box bag keeps essentials close. Before the event I'd sit, reach and climb a step in it, because that's when arm warmers slide and tunics ride up.
22. Modest Puppet Fnaf Costume

The Puppet is a full-coverage character to begin with, which makes it a natural modest costume. Wear a loose long-sleeve black maxi dress, or a black tunic with wide-leg pants, with three white buttons and striped cuffs that sit securely over the wrists. Striped socks can show above black ankle boots, and white gloves finish the hands. Cover your hair with a plain black hood, soft head covering or tucked scarf. Wear a white mask with generous eye openings or paint the face with skin-safe makeup, and carry a light gift-box handbag. I'd hem the dress clear of the ground and skip any trailing strings, because both catch on steps.
23. Warm Weather Puppet Fnaf Costume

Black bodysuits get hot fast at a crowded indoor party, so this version strips the layers back. A sleeveless black jumpsuit over a light black-and-white striped fitted shirt, three white buttons, short white gloves and striped ankle socks with black canvas sneakers. Tie long hair into a secure bun or use a ventilated wig cap rather than a full wig. Apply the white makeup in thin layers and set each one, because sweat lifts heavy cream base by the end of the evening. A flat white half-mask can hang from your belt as a backup. Carry a small cardboard music box on a shoulder strap so your hands stay free.
24. Cold Weather Puppet Fnaf Costume

For outdoor nights, the trick is that black hides any amount of layering. Start with thermal leggings and a fitted thermal top, then a long black sweater or fleece-lined jumpsuit over them. Three felt buttons and striped knit warmers over the sleeves and lower legs keep the character details, with insulated white gloves and black weather-resistant boots. Tuck your hair into a black knit cap under a roomy hood. I'd pick a flexible white mask over face paint here, since cold wind and drizzle smear cream makeup. Paint it with black eyes, red cheeks, purple tears and red lips, and use a gift-box backpack to hold spare layers. Reflective tape inside the striped cuffs adds visibility without changing the look.
25. Kid Puppet Fnaf Costume

Kids pull off anything itchy, tight or hard to see through, so I build the child's version around a soft cotton sweatshirt and black joggers. Three large felt circles go on with removable fabric tape, and the striped sleeves and socks should have no tight elastic at the top. White knit gloves and familiar black sneakers with grippy soles beat new shoes on the night. Pull long hair into a low ponytail, or tuck short hair under the hood. Face paint is usually kinder than a mask: a light white base, soft black eye shapes, red cheeks and purple lines, kept off the eyelids, after a patch test on the wrist. A small foam box on a crossbody strap is the prop, and skip any long strings.
26. Teen Puppet Fnaf Costume

Teens usually want a version they can wear to school or a community event without feeling in full costume. Pair a black oversized sweater with a pleated black skirt and opaque tights, or relaxed black pants, then pin three white buttons on the sweater and wear striped sleeves underneath. Striped crew socks, black high-tops and white fingerless gloves finish it. A sleek ponytail with temporary purple clips, or a short black wig, keeps the hair simple. Paint the white through the center of the face, darken the eyes, and add the red cheeks and purple tears. Many schools don't allow masks or full face coverings, so this half-painted face is the safer bet there. A small striped crossbody box works as the purse.
27. Masculine Puppet Fnaf Costume

For a more tailored, masculine take, the long vest is what keeps the Puppet tall. Wear a fitted black shirt with straight-leg trousers and a long sleeveless black vest, with three oversized white buttons on the vest. Striped sleeves sit under the shirt cuffs and striped socks above black lace-up boots, and white gloves give the classic contrast. Slick short hair back or wear a fitted black hood. A flexible white mask with black eyes, purple streaks, red cheeks and a red mouth works, or paint the same design on. Carry a narrow music-box case with a handle. Shoulder cords look great, but make them detachable and save them for photos.
28. Androgynous Puppet Fnaf Costume

Clean lines and relaxed proportions make the androgynous version easy to fit to almost any body. A black utility jumpsuit, or a black shirt with wide-leg pants, takes three white center buttons, striped arm sleeves, striped socks, white gloves and chunky black sneakers. A short black wig with a center part or smooth hair under a close hood keeps the head neat. Use matte makeup: a white base, black eye shapes, rounded red cheeks, vertical purple marks and narrow red lips. A boxy black-and-white crossbody bag echoes the geometry. I'd roll the sleeves once to show the stripes and run a drawstring through the waist channel if the jumpsuit is loose.
29. Music Box Puppet Fnaf Costume

Here the music box becomes the centerpiece. Wear a black bodysuit or fitted shirt with leggings, three white buttons, striped limbs, white gloves and black dance shoes, with your hair under a black hood and the white mask or matching makeup. Build the box from foam board, paint it in bold stripes and hang it from padded shoulder straps. Foam board dents if you lean on it, so I'd reinforce the corners with tape on the inside. Keep it small enough to sit at your waist without knocking your legs, and make the crank from flexible foam with no metal moving parts. It's far lighter and safer than a full cardboard build.
30. Gift Box Puppet Fnaf Costume

The striped gift box is the other prop tied to this character, and it's a fun swap for the music box. Wear a black long-sleeve dress, tunic and leggings, or jumpsuit, with three white buttons and striped forearms and lower legs. White gloves, flat black boots and a sleek black wig or hood follow, and the face is white with black eyes, red cheeks, purple tears and a red smile. Build an open-bottom foam-board box and hang it from soft suspenders, decorated with stripes and a big fabric bow. Measure your narrowest doorway first, because a wearable box that won't fit through it ends up on the floor all night. If in doubt, carry a small striped box purse instead.
31. Marionette String Puppet Fnaf Costume

Marionette strings add a story to the costume, but loose cords around the body are a genuine snag risk, so I design them to come off. Wear a fitted black jumpsuit with white buttons, striped arm and leg sections, white gloves and soft black boots, with your hair under a hood and a flexible mask or face paint. Make a light control bar from painted foam pipe insulation rather than wood. Tie short ribbons from the bar to wrist cuffs that close with hook-and-loop, so they pull free if anything catches. Never route them near the neck, ankles or fingers. Carry the bar at your side while you walk, and add a miniature music-box purse.
32. Robotic Puppet Fnaf Costume

A few silver accents suggest the animatronic without any bulky mechanical pieces. Use a black zip-front jumpsuit with three raised white foam buttons and striped wrist and ankle panels, then stitch narrow silver fabric strips over the elbows and knees to suggest joints. White gloves, black futuristic sneakers and a smooth black hood keep the outline sleek. Paint a white foam mask with black eyes, red cheeks, purple tears and a red mouth, adding thin silver seam lines around the edges. A small control-panel bag made from painted cardboard with plastic buttons is the prop. Because every piece is soft, you can still sit and move your arms, and reflective trim helps outdoors.
33. Cardboard Puppet Fnaf Costume

Cardboard works for this costume if you keep every piece light and small. Start with a black long-sleeve top, leggings or pants and comfortable sneakers, then glue three white cardboard circles to the shirt and wrap painted paper bands around the forearms and shins. The mask comes from thin poster board, curved and edged with flexible foam so the cut rim doesn't scrape your face. Cut wide eye holes before painting the black eyes, red cheeks, purple streaks and red mouth. A black beanie, soft elastic, white cotton gloves and a small striped music box with a ribbon handle finish it. Cardboard softens in drizzle, so seal the paint with a clear coat.
34. Elegant Puppet Fnaf Costume

For a themed party where you want polish over theatrics, the Puppet translates well into formalwear. A floor-length black column dress, or a black tailored suit with a long coat, takes three pearl-white buttons, fitted striped cuffs, white gloves and sleek black shoes with stable soles. A smooth low bun, a straight black bob or a neat side part all suit it. Paint an ivory base, carefully blended black eyes, muted red cheeks, narrow violet tears and precise red lips. Carry a black clutch painted like a tiny music box, and add thin white piping and removable ribbon loops at the shoulders. Get the hem taken up so it never drags under your shoes.
35. Convention Puppet Fnaf Costume

A long day on your feet changes what matters, so this version is about ventilation, washability and repairs. Wear a breathable black dance unitard, or a moisture-wicking shirt with stretch pants, with reinforced white buttons sewn through a backing patch. Make the striped cuffs removable so you can wash them separately. Thin white gloves and cushioned black sneakers help with standing in lines, and a ventilated hood keeps your hair in. A light foam mask with big eye openings and a little padding inside sits better for hours. Pack makeup for touch-ups, a music-box backpack for water and snacks, and a small kit with fabric tape, safety pins and spare elastic.
Stripes That Don't Slide Down Your Arms
The striped wrists and ankles are the second thing people recognize, and the second thing that fails. Sock tubes and arm warmers slip down after an hour of moving, and ribbon wrapped around a sleeve unwinds. Here is what I do depending on how much time there is.
- No sewing: cut the feet off striped knee socks and fold the cut edge under by a finger's width before you pull them on. The fold stops the knit from rolling and laddering.
- A little sewing: run a strip of narrow elastic inside the top of each tube, sized to sit snug but not tight. A stitch or two catching it to your sleeve seam keeps it from sliding.
- More time: cut tubes from striped jersey with the stripes running around the limb, and sew them straight onto the sleeves and legs of the bodysuit so nothing can move at all.
- For kids: skip elastic entirely and stitch the stripes onto the joggers and sweatshirt cuffs, so there's nothing to pull off or lose.
Getting the white face off at the end of the night
White cream base, red and purple liner all hang on, and scrubbing just smears them into a pink and grey film. I take it off with an oil cleanser or a cleansing balm massaged in dry, which melts the pigment, then a warm damp cloth, then a normal face wash. Purple and red pigments can leave a faint tint on fair skin overnight, so do a patch test on the inside of your wrist a day or two before, and remove the makeup before bed rather than in the morning. Wear an old dark top while you do it, because white base stains a light collar.
The Five Details Every Puppet Needs
Every version above rests on the same five things: a black base, three white buttons, striped limbs, white hands and the sad painted face. After that it's down to how much you want to sew, how long you'll be wearing it, and whether you'll be indoors or out. Check that you can see properly through the mask, clip down anything that dangles, and pick shoes for the night you're actually having. Small props survive an evening far better than big ones. A simple closet build or a careful convention version will both read as the Puppet if you get those basics right.
