Pink hair does a lot of the costume work on its own. Put a bubblegum bob on someone and half the room starts guessing characters before they've seen the outfit. Your own dyed pink, a semi-permanent rinse or a wig all count, and each one suits different looks. I've pulled together thirty-five ideas here, from cartoon and anime characters to candy, fantasy and space themes, with the clothing, makeup, shoes and one prop for each. The thing I'd settle first is the shade: pastel, bubblegum, hot pink and magenta point to very different characters, and picking the wrong one is the most common reason a pink-haired costume reads as "girl in a wig" instead of a person.

Wig, Dye or Spray for a Single Night
Before you pick a character, decide how the pink gets onto your head, because that limits which characters will work.
- A wig gives you any shade, length or cut, including blunt bangs and twin tails you couldn't cut into your own hair. It's warm, and a cheap one can look shiny, but it's the only route to exact character hair.
- Semi-permanent dye looks the most natural, but pink shows properly only on light or pre-lightened hair. On dark brown hair it may give no more than a faint tint, and on pale blonde it can stay for weeks and fade unevenly.
- Temporary color spray or hair chalk washes out, but it rubs off onto collars, hats, pillows and hands, and it runs if it rains. Keep it to light, dry hair and dark clothing.
For a one-night costume with a defined character haircut, I nearly always choose a wig. For loose fantasy looks like fairies, unicorns and the candy themes, a spray over your own hair can be enough.
1. Frenchy Costume With Pink Hair

Frenchy is the pink-hair costume most adults will name without a hint, as long as the hair is short, curled and full. A light pink button-down tucked into a black pencil skirt or cropped black pants sets the 1950s line. I'd pick a wig with some curl already set in it; a straight wig won't hold a pin curl without heat, and many cheap ones melt under a curling iron. Winged liner, soft pink lipstick and rosy cheeks. A vintage comb or compact mirror is the prop. Ankle socks with black loafers, a satin neck scarf, and black cat-eye glasses if you like.
2. Princess Bubblegum Costume With Pink Hair

Princess Bubblegum is head-to-toe pink, which means the shades have to agree. A sleeveless pink maxi dress, or a fitted pink top with an ankle-length skirt, a narrow purple belt and a very long bubblegum wig with blunt bangs. I hold the wig up against the dress in daylight before buying, since two different pinks side by side look like a mistake. A crown from gold cardstock with a blue gem at the center, a little lavender on the lids, and a pink science notebook as her prop. Purple flats or lavender sneakers. Thrifted formal dresses are an easy start here.
3. Starfire Costume With Pink Hair

Starfire calls for magenta rather than pastel, and a lot of length. A long, straight pink-magenta wig with real movement, or dyed hair with a clean center part. A purple fitted top, a matching skater skirt and a silver belt, with opaque purple tights underneath for coverage. Long wigs tangle at the nape where they rub a collar or cape, so I brush it out once at the midpoint of the night. Violet shadow, pink gloss and a few silver face gems. Silver wrist cuffs, a purple gem necklace, a green glowing orb to carry, and purple ankle boots or high-tops.
4. Wanda Fairy Costume With Pink Hair

Wanda is a fast build: a bright yellow T-shirt, black pants or leggings and a short pink bob, with a small gold paper crown tilted to one side. The tilt is what makes her look like the cartoon rather than a princess. A star wand from cardboard, gold paper and a wooden dowel, plus pink lipstick and a thin black wing of liner. Small yellow wings on soft elastic are optional, and I'd leave them off in a crowded room. For the duo, the other person wears a white shirt, black pants, a green wig, the matching crown and a wand.
5. Strawberry Shortcake Costume With Pink Hair

Strawberry Shortcake is usually red-haired in the classic style, so a strawberry-pink wig is a softer take, and that's fine. A white blouse under a pink or red pinafore with small strawberry patches, green-and-white striped tights and red Mary Janes or canvas sneakers. A shoulder-length wig with loose curls, topped with a pink newsboy cap carrying a handmade strawberry. Freckles drawn with a brown brow pencil look more natural than black liner. Carry a berry basket or plush fruit. On a cold night, a white cardigan fits under the pinafore without changing the outline.
6. Princess Poppy Costume With Pink Hair

Poppy's hair has to stand up, and that's the engineering problem in this costume. I wrap a long hot-pink wig around a lightweight foam cone and pin it through the cap, then mist it with hairspray; the cone takes the weight so the wig doesn't slide back. Test it at home, because a tall headpiece tips forward if the cone isn't anchored to the wig cap. A green floral headband sits at the base. A sleeveless turquoise shift dress with felt leaves at the hem, cropped blue leggings, blue flats, pink blush across cheeks and nose, and a felt flower or scrapbook to carry.
7. Stephanie Costume With Pink Hair

Stephanie is a sporty costume, so it needs to move. A sleeveless pink dress or long tunic over white leggings, with lilac trim at the neck and hem from fabric tape if you want the detail. A chin-length bubblegum bob with straight bangs and a lavender headband. Short wigs are the easiest to wear for a long day; they don't tangle and they don't heat the neck. Light mascara, pink blush and clear gloss. A jump rope or small pink backpack, striped socks and pink-and-white sneakers. Teachers and parents who'll be on their feet all day tend to like this one.
8. Mitsuri Costume With Pink Hair

Mitsuri's hair is the costume: long pastel pink fading into mint green at the ends, worn in three thick braids. Ombre wigs with that exact fade can be hard to find, so a pink wig with green clip-in extensions braided through the ends is a fair workaround. A dark button-front jacket and pleated skirt, a white cape or oversized shawl, and lime knee-high socks for her contrast. Braid the wig while it's on a stand, not your head, so the braids sit evenly. Pink shadow and green accent liner. A sakura fan instead of a sword, and flat boots or platform sneakers.
9. Anya Forger Costume With Pink Hair

Anya's hair ornaments matter more than the wig. Cut two black cones from felt or thin craft foam, edge them in gold, and fix each one to a sturdy clip; foam keeps its shape better than felt if you'll wear them for hours. A short pastel-pink bob with small side sections framing the face. A black long-sleeve dress with gold trim at the cuffs and hem, white tights and black Mary Janes. Soft makeup only. A small bag of packaged peanuts is the clue her fans will laugh at. Shorten the dress for a child or lengthen it for an adult, and she slots into a spy-family group.
10. Chika Fujiwara Costume With Pink Hair

Chika's look is a school uniform and soft blush-pink hair with a black bow. A black or navy pleated skirt and matching jacket with white trim, a crisp white collar and a red ribbon bow at the neck. A shoulder-length pastel wig with straight bangs and a small black bow near the top. Bangs on cheap wigs often come too long; I trim them a little at a time with the points of the scissors, cutting upward into the fringe, so they don't end in a blunt line. Peach blush and curled lashes. Black knee socks and brown loafers, and a notebook or game card to carry.
11. Sakura Haruno Costume With Pink Hair

Sakura's early outfit can be worn without any of the weapons. A sleeveless red tunic with white trim and side slits over fitted shorts, black fingerless gloves and a small pouch at the waist. A short straight pink wig with a side part, and her headband worn across the crown or around the neck. The diamond mark on the forehead is optional, done with a pink liner pencil if you'd like it. Soft pink shadow and defined brows. Navy leg warmers over open-toe sandals with skin-tone socks look closest to the character, though black sneakers are the kinder choice for a long walk.
12. Madoka Kaname Costume With Pink Hair

Madoka's twin pigtails are short and curled, tied with red ribbon, and they're easier to get right with a wig that comes with clip-on pigtails than by cutting your own. A white puff-sleeve blouse under a pink fitted bodice and short layered skirt, white tights and a large red bow at the neck. A light petticoat gives the skirt its volume. I keep the bows to the ones the character actually wears; magical-girl costumes tip into clutter quickly when every edge gets a ribbon. Pale pink shadow, rounded blush and rose gloss. White gloves and red Mary Janes.
13. Zero Two Costume With Pink Hair

Zero Two works because her strong red-and-white uniform pushes the long pastel hair forward. A fitted red jacket dress with white trim over opaque white tights, a black necktie and a wide white belt. Her small red horns can be made from lightweight foam and glued to hair clips, then pinned through the wig into a braid of your own hair underneath so they don't slide. A long pink wig with straight bangs, red winged liner and soft pink lipstick. White knee-high flat boots or white sneakers, and a red ID-style card or small clutch.
14. Mina Ashido Costume With Pink Hair

Mina has pink skin as well as pink hair, and that's the part I'd treat with care. Use a water-activated face paint lightly on the cheeks and forehead rather than covering the face and neck, patch-test it on the inside of the wrist the day before, and set it with translucent powder so it doesn't land on the white shirt. A fluffy short pink wig with two small yellow horn clips near the crown. A gray blazer, white shirt, red tie, dark green pleated skirt and black tights for the school version. For her hero look, a purple-and-turquoise bodysuit under a cropped vest.
15. Perona Costume With Pink Hair

Perona pairs a gothic dress with candy-pink hair, and the contrast is the point. A burgundy or black ruffled dress with puffed sleeves and a flared knee-length skirt, red-and-white striped tights and a cropped velvet cape. A long bubblegum wig in twin ponytails or loose curls under a small black crown. Twin tails stay neater if you tie them over a hidden ponytail of your own hair, which also stops the wig from shifting. Rosy cheek circles, defined lashes and berry lipstick give the doll face. A small pink parasol and black platform Mary Janes.
16. Jem Costume With Pink Hair

Jem is an 1980s rock star, so the hair wants volume and a deep side part. A long neon-pink wig, teased lightly at the crown and swept to one side. A hot-pink wrap dress with a metallic belt and a cropped silver or white jacket with strong shoulders, plus pink tights or shiny leggings. Purple shadow, pink lipstick and a couple of star-shaped face gems near the eyes. Statement earrings and stacked bangles. Teasing a synthetic wig is fine but it won't fully brush out again, so I only tease a wig I'm happy to keep big. White ankle boots and a toy microphone.
17. Lavagirl Costume With Pink Hair

Lavagirl is easier than she looks, because she's all one color family. A long-sleeve magenta top and leggings, with lighter pink and silver fabric shapes along the arms and legs to suggest lava lines. I cut those shapes from iron-on fabric so they stay flat when the leggings stretch. A metallic pink belt and light wrist cuffs. A long, straight hot-pink wig with the front pieces pinned back off the face. Shimmering pink shadow and glossy lips. A glowing orb or lava-print pouch to carry, and pink sneakers or flat metallic boots that let you move.
18. Pinkie Pie Costume With Pink Hair

A human Pinkie Pie comes mostly from clothes you might already own. A light pink T-shirt with three balloons cut from blue and yellow felt, a bright pink skater skirt or pastel shorts over opaque tights, and a hot-pink wig with as much curl as you can find. Her hair is the joke; a sleek wig misses it entirely. If the wig is flat, braid it damp in sections overnight on a stand and undo it in the morning for crimped volume. Blue liner and glossy pink lips. A bunch of balloons or a cupcake purse, and blue high-tops or pink flats.
19. Gwenpool Costume With Pink Hair

Gwenpool uses a white base with pink panels, and white is unforgiving, so I keep makeup well away from the neckline. A white long-sleeve athletic top and fitted white pants, with pink sections at the sides, shoulders and knees, a pink utility belt and white gloves. Her signature hair is a blonde bob with pink ends; a wig with the colors already blended looks better than coloring the tips yourself. An all-pink bob is a simpler take. A white half-mask edged in pink, a comic book or speech-bubble sign to carry, and pink high-tops.
20. Pink Diamond Costume With Pink Hair

Pink Diamond is about a big, soft silhouette rather than detail. A fitted pink bodice and a full layered skirt in a few blush tones, puffed sleeves, a white waist panel and a large satin bow at the back. A voluminous pale-pink curly wig. Her gem goes on the upper chest; use a skin-safe adhesive made for face gems and test it a day ahead, as some glues sting on the chest. Pearl highlighter and soft rose lipstick. White tights, pink ballet flats or low ankle boots, and a crystal-shaped purse.
21. Cotton Candy Witch Costume With Pink Hair

The cotton candy witch is a pastel spin on a classic Halloween shape. A lavender blouse into a layered pink tulle skirt, striped pastel tights and a fitted purple belt. A fluffy ombre wig mixing pink, blue and lavender, with a light pink pointed hat trimmed with faux candy and a ribbon. Pointed hats slide off fluffy wigs, so I sew a thin elastic under the hat brim and tuck it beneath the wig at the back. Shimmery pink shadow and lilac liner. A small pastel broom or a clear bucket of pink cotton batting, and lavender boots or pink sneakers.
22. Pink Unicorn Costume With Pink Hair

A pink unicorn can be as simple as a bodysuit, tulle skirt and horn, and the wig does most of the magic. A white long-sleeve bodysuit or fitted top with a layered pastel tulle skirt, opaque white tights and a pale pink satin belt. An extra-long wavy pink wig with a gold horn headband between small fabric ears. Glitter travels; I keep it to the temples and use a gel glitter that holds better than loose. A fluffy pink tail on the waistband and a star purse. White ankle boots or iridescent sneakers, and a cropped pastel cape for outside.
23. Pink Mermaid Costume With Pink Hair

For the pink mermaid, the skirt decides whether you can walk. A pink sequined maxi skirt that flares below the knee, in a stretchy fabric with a back slit, under a fitted lavender or turquoise top with shell appliques. A long wavy rose-pink wig with pearl clips and small seashells on one side. Mesh stencils make scale makeup quick: hold a clean piece of fishnet against the cheekbone and dab shimmer through it. Aqua shadow and pearly highlighter. Hidden pink flats or low sandals under the hem, and a shell-shaped purse.
24. Pink Fairy Costume With Pink Hair

The garden fairy suits pastel pink better than any bright shade. A sage-green corset-style top over a white puff-sleeve blouse, and a knee-length skirt of uneven pink, cream and green tulle layers. A long pink wig in loose waves with tiny fabric flowers woven into a side braid. Wings with shoulder straps tend to dig in after an hour, so I pad the straps with a strip of felt. Rosy blush and green liner. A flower-covered wand or a basket of faux blossoms, and ballet flats or low ankle boots. Easy to scale for a child or a group of fairies.
25. Pink Flamingo Costume With Pink Hair

The flamingo is funny without a bird suit. A fitted pink top with a feather-trimmed skirt or pink tutu, opaque blush tights, and a short curly hot-pink wig with a headband carrying a small flamingo face and curved beak. Light pink feather panels at the wrists suggest wings while leaving the hands free. Feather trim sheds on everything, so I give it a shake outside and keep a lint roller in my bag. Coral shadow and bright pink lipstick. Pink sneakers or flats, and one-legged poses for the photos.
26. Bubblegum Pop Star Costume With Pink Hair

The bubblegum pop star is a made-up performer, so you can mix pieces freely. A metallic pink jacket over a plain white crop top or fitted tank, a silver pleated skirt, opaque tights and a wide holographic belt. A sleek bubblegum ponytail wig, or your own long pink hair pulled high. A ponytail wig clips onto a small bun of your own hair, which makes it far more secure than a full wig for dancing. Silver shadow, sharp pink liner and face gems. Hoops, fingerless gloves, a toy microphone, and platform sneakers you can actually dance in.
27. Pink Alien Costume With Pink Hair

The pink alien works best with clean lines, so I keep the clothing plain and let shine do the rest. A silver mock-neck top with a metallic pink skirt or fitted pants, and a clear vinyl jacket or holographic vest. Vinyl gets hot and squeaks, so it's better for a cool night or as a short jacket. A neon-pink bob with blunt bangs and flexible antennae on a silver headband. Lavender shadow, graphic white liner and silver face gems. A transparent purse full of glow sticks, silver gloves and metallic sneakers.
28. Pink Cat Costume With Pink Hair

The pink cat is the costume I'd build from a closet in an afternoon. A long-sleeve black top, a pink skater skirt and black tights, plus a pink faux-fur vest or cropped jacket. A shoulder-length wig in soft waves with a matching cat-ear headband pushed back behind the hairline so the ears sit up. Black winged liner, a small painted nose and fine whiskers drawn with a liquid liner pen. A flexible pink tail on the waistband, and a yarn-ball purse. Black ankle boots, flats or sneakers, and paw gloves if you want them.
29. Pink Robot Costume With Pink Hair

The pink robot rests on a boxy vest, and cardboard makes the best one. A silver long-sleeve shirt and leggings, with a pink cardboard vest decorated with painted buttons, gauges and foil panels. I tape every cardboard edge and cut the armholes a good inch wider than feels necessary, because a stiff vest rubs under the arms all night. A blunt neon-pink bob and a silver headband with short antennae. Metallic shadow, geometric pink liner and silver lipstick. Pink gloves, silver cuffs, a foam gear prop and flat silver boots.
30. Pink Vampire Costume With Pink Hair

The pink vampire is glamorous rather than gory. A black high-neck dress or velvet blouse with a flowing burgundy skirt, and a rose-pink satin cape with a stand-up collar fastened by a jeweled brooch. A long dusty-pink wig in polished waves. Plum shadow, pale foundation and deep rose lipstick. Costume fangs only if they fit and you can talk in them; most people take them out after the first photo. A lace fan or black rose bouquet. Opaque tights, black lace-up boots and a velvet choker.
31. Pink Ghost Costume With Pink Hair

The pink ghost swaps the white sheet for floating chiffon. A pale pink chiffon dress with loose sleeves and an uneven hem, white or blush tights for warmth, and a sheer pink cape that moves as you walk. A very light pastel wig in long waves, teased a little at the crown so it looks airy. Pearl highlighter, pale lavender shadow and tiny white stars at the temples. Chiffon snags on rough surfaces, so I'd keep this one for an indoor party. A small lantern-style light, and white ballet flats. Gentle enough for a classroom.
32. Pink Cowgirl Costume With Pink Hair

The pink cowgirl is one of the easiest looks here to walk in. A white button-down tucked into pink flared jeans or a denim skirt, a pink fringed vest and a wide belt with a silver buckle. A long pink wig in two loose braids under a white or blush cowboy hat. A hat over a wig needs a snug fit; I tuck a strip of foam weatherstrip inside the hatband if it's loose. Peachy blush and a couple of star accents near one eye. A soft rope coil or horseshoe purse, a neckerchief, and white western boots.
33. Pink Race Car Driver Costume With Pink Hair

The pink race car driver is the sporty one. A pink zip-front coverall, or a utility shirt and cargo pants in pink, with black-and-white checkered patches on the sleeves, chest and belt. A sleek high ponytail, or a shoulder-length wig under a light racing cap. Coveralls make bathroom trips awkward, so a two-piece set is the more practical choice for a long party. Sharp black liner and pink lip tint. Design your own patches rather than copying real team logos. A checkered flag or homemade pit-pass, fingerless gloves and black-and-white sneakers.
34. Pink Mad Scientist Costume With Pink Hair

The pink mad scientist lets the hair be messy, which is a relief if your wig isn't great. A white lab coat over a lavender blouse and pink trousers or a pleated skirt with tights. A bright pink wig teased into curls with a few silver streaks of temporary spray, and clear safety goggles pushed up on top. Colored water in sealed plastic test tubes, carried in a light rack; I add a strip of tape over each cap because they leak in a bag. Purple liner and silver shadow near the brows. Pink rubber gloves, a handwritten name badge and white sneakers.
35. Pink Ice Cream Sundae Costume With Pink Hair

The ice cream sundae turns the wig into the scoop. A pale pink dress or top and skirt with felt sprinkles sewn on, a brown belt for chocolate sauce and a fluffy white collar for whipped cream. A curly pastel wig shaped round, topped with a red pom-pom cherry on a headband. Felt sprinkles are quicker to glue, but they peel off a knit dress, so I sew a few with a single stitch each. Candy-colored shadow and glossy pink lips. A paper sundae cup or scoop-shaped purse, striped tights, and white sneakers or red Mary Janes.
Taming a Bargain Pink Wig
Inexpensive pink wigs share three problems: they shine like plastic, they tangle at the nape, and they slide. All three are fixable in an evening.
Take the shine down
Shake a little dry shampoo or unscented talc into your hand, work it lightly through the outer layer, then brush out the excess. It knocks back the plastic gleam and makes the color look softer.
Brush from the ends up
Use a wide-tooth comb, starting at the tips and working toward the cap, holding the hair above the section you're combing. Never brush a synthetic wig from the roots down; it stretches the fibers and makes them frizz. Check the label before using any heat, since only heat-resistant fibers can take a curling iron, and even those need a low setting.
Anchor it to your own hair
Flatten your hair into small pin curls or braids under a wig cap, then push bobby pins through the wig's edge into those curls at the temples and nape. A wig fixed this way stays put through dancing, hats and hugs.
Let the Shade of Pink Pick the Character
Every costume here starts with one question: which pink? Pastel and blush suit fairies, princesses, ghosts and sweets; bubblegum fits cartoons and pop looks; hot pink and magenta carry superheroes, aliens and performers. Get the hair shade right, match the clothing to it in daylight, and add one prop that names the character. Pin the wig to your own hair, keep the makeup clear of white collars, and choose shoes you can stand in all night. Most of the clothing can come from a thrift store or your own wardrobe.
