Most people I dress own a drawer full of plain tees and still feel they have nothing to wear. The tee isn't the problem. It's the hardest-working thing in the closet, and it's easy to stop seeing it. What changes a basic tee is the fabric weight, the tuck and what you put next to it. Below are 35 complete outfits, from coffee runs to office days to evenings out, each one ready to copy, with the small details I adjust when I put them on a real person.

Cotton Weight Decides Which Tee Works Where
When I go through a client's tee drawer, I sort by weight first and color second. A thin, slightly sheer tee is a layering piece: it goes under slip dresses, pinafores and cardigans, where bulk would spoil the line. A mid-weight tee is the everyday one that tucks into jeans and skirts. A heavyweight tee holds its own shape, so it's the one I use for tees worn alone, oversized looks and anything with tailoring.
- Hold it up to a window. If you can see your hand clearly through it, keep it for layering.
- Check the neckline rib. A narrow, firm rib keeps its shape; a wide floppy one stretches after a few washes.
- Look at the side seams. If they twist toward the front after washing, the tee was cut off-grain and will keep twisting.
- Tuck length matters. A tee that ends at the hip bone tucks cleanly; a cropped one won't stay in a high-rise waistband.
1. White T-Shirt With High-Waist Straight-Leg Jeans and White Sneakers

White tee, high-rise straight jeans, white leather sneakers. It's the formula I start almost everyone with, because the tuck at the high waist gives a clean shape on nearly any figure. A black leather belt marks the waist, and small gold hoops with a tan or black crossbody are all the extras it needs. The tee decides whether this looks sharp or tired. I go for a heavyweight cotton that stands slightly away from the body; a thin one clings and shows every line underneath.
2. Black T-Shirt With Tailored Trousers and Loafers

A black tee tucked into well-cut tailored trousers is my answer for anyone who hates feeling overdressed at work. The soft cotton against a pressed trouser looks deliberate. I add a slim belt and patent loafers, or ones with a small chain detail, and the outfit is suddenly office-ready. A structured tote and fine layered necklaces finish it. Beige, charcoal or navy trousers all work. Check the tee in daylight first, because a black tee that's been washed often fades to charcoal and looks shabby next to new black.
3. Oversized T-Shirt With Biker Shorts and Chunky Sneakers

An oversized tee over fitted biker shorts is all about proportion: loose on top, tight on the bottom. Let the tee hang naturally and don't tuck it. Chunky platform sneakers, a curved cap, slouchy white socks and a mini crossbody make it a warm-weather errand uniform. The tee should be long enough to cover the shorts' waistband when you lift your arms. A heavyweight cotton drapes; a thin one looks like you slept in it.
4. Knotted T-Shirt With Floral Midi Skirt and Strappy Sandals

Knotting a tee at the front waist gives it shape, and over a floral midi it becomes something you could wear to a garden party. I gather the extra fabric at one side, twist it and tuck the end up under the hem so it doesn't stick out like a bow. Flat strappy sandals, a thin chain, small huggies and a straw bag keep it light. Pastel florals and a white tee are the easiest place to start. It suits baby showers and outdoor brunches.
5. T-Shirt Layered Under a Slip Dress With Ankle Boots

A fitted crewneck tee under a satin or light crepe slip dress takes the slip from evening to daytime. The tee covers the shoulders and stops a slinky fabric from feeling too bare. For cooler days, I add ankle boots and a leather jacket over the shoulders. Keep the jewelry quiet so the layering shows. The tee has to be fitted and thin; anything loose bunches under the slip's straps and makes the dress pull to one side.
6. Graphic T-Shirt With Leather Pants and Pointed-Toe Heels

A favorite graphic tee with sleek leather trousers is how I'd take a casual shirt to a cocktail bar. Tuck it fully so the waist stays defined, then add pointed heels for length. A small structured bag and a red lip finish it. Black or deep burgundy leather works with almost any print. If your graphic is very faded or cracked, that's fine; the worn tee against new leather is the appeal.
7. Striped T-Shirt With White Wide-Leg Trousers and Espadrilles

A classic Breton striped tee with crisp white wide-leg trousers is a vacation outfit I'd pack every summer. I do a loose front tuck so the stripes break at the waist instead of running all the way down, and a tan belt adds a warm line between them. Espadrille wedges give height without wobbling, and a straw tote with big sunglasses finishes it. Stripes widen whatever they sit on, so I pick a tee with narrower stripes if the wearer worries about the chest.
8. Cropped T-Shirt With High-Waist Cargo Pants and Platform Sneakers

A boxy cropped tee that ends right at the waistband with high-rise cargos in khaki, olive or black is a streetwear outfit built on balance. The short top marks the waist and the loose cargos keep the leg long. Platform sneakers add height, and a chain necklace with a small shoulder bag finishes it. Check the crop length in the mirror with your arms raised. If it shows more than a strip of skin, size up or swap to a regular tee with a front tuck.
9. T-Shirt With Denim Maxi Skirt and Flat Sandals

A plain tee tucked into a long denim maxi is one of the easiest outfits I know. The denim holds its shape, so the tee can be soft and relaxed. I like a front slit for walking; without one, a stiff maxi limits your stride. Flat leather sandals and a woven crossbody keep it practical, and a pendant with thin rings adds polish. When it gets cold, swap to ankle boots and drape a cardigan over the shoulders.
10. T-Shirt With Trench Coat, Straight-Leg Jeans and Ankle Boots

A white or grey tee, medium-wash straight jeans and a beige trench is the outfit I'd wear on a day that starts cold and ends warm. The trench gives a plain base structure and keeps the rain off. Block-heel ankle boots handle wet streets, and I roll the jean hem once to show a little ankle above the boot. A leather crossbody and tortoiseshell sunglasses finish it. Wear the trench open with the belt tied behind you so it doesn't flap.
11. T-Shirt With Pleated Midi Skirt and Ballet Flats

A fitted tee tucked into a pleated midi gives the skirt somewhere quiet to start. The pleats bring the movement, and the plain top keeps it from looking fussy. Ballet flats in metallic or animal print add interest, and a slim clutch with pearl studs finishes it. I'd choose a tee with a slightly higher neckline here; a deep scoop with a full skirt starts to look like loungewear. Lovely for bridal showers or an afternoon tea.
12. T-Shirt With Denim Jacket and Bermuda Shorts

A light-wash denim jacket over a white tee with Bermuda-length shorts is double denim done the easy way, because the shorts are a different wash and cut. I let the tee show at the neckline and hem for a clean break. Flat slides or low-top sneakers, a canvas tote and a cap make it a weekend outfit. When it heats up, the jacket goes over the shoulders. The shorts should end just above the knee for this balance to work.
13. T-Shirt Dress With Belt and White Sneakers

A mid-weight cotton tee dress with a leather belt is one piece and you're done. The belt gives it a waist; without one, a straight tee dress can look like a nightshirt. White sneakers, a crossbody and big sunglasses make it a travel or errand outfit. I'd go for a dress that ends just above the knee, and check the fabric isn't see-through in sunlight by holding it up to a window.
14. T-Shirt With Cardigan, Ankle Boots and Skinny Jeans

A white or cream fitted tee under an open knit cardigan, with dark skinny jeans and suede ankle boots, is the outfit I reach for on chilly autumn mornings. The cardigan adds warmth and texture without overwhelming the base, and a long pendant draws the eye down the center. Oatmeal, camel and charcoal cardigans match almost anything. Skip a bulky cardigan if the tee is very thin; the knit's weight drags the neckline open.
15. T-Shirt With Leather Jacket, Straight-Leg Jeans and Combat Boots

A white or grey tee tucked into straight jeans under a black leather jacket, with lace-up combat boots, is the jeans-and-tee formula with some bite. Silver jewelry, a chain and studs, matches the zips and eyelets. I tuck the tee only at the front so it doesn't bunch under the jacket's waist. It works for concerts and casual nights out. If the jacket is cropped, a full tuck looks cleaner.
16. T-Shirt With Joggers and Platform Sneakers

A fitted or slightly cropped tee with tailored joggers turns gym clothes into something you'd wear to a casual Friday. The joggers matter: tapered ankle, clean waistband, no saggy seat. Platform sneakers add height, and a zip hoodie over the shoulders plus a belt bag or sleek backpack keep it streetwear. I stick to neutrals or one tone head to toe so it reads as a choice, not as leftover workout gear.
17. T-Shirt With Wrap Skirt and Wedge Sandals

A wrap skirt gives a plain tee instant shape, because the crossover front makes a V that draws the eye to the waist. Tuck a solid tee fully so the line stays clean, and add wedge sandals for height you can walk in. A rattan circle bag and gold hoops bring summer texture. Rayon or light linen drapes best. Before you leave the house, check the wrap in wind; a short overlap flies open, so a deeper wrap is safer for outdoor lunches.
18. T-Shirt Layered Under a Pinafore Dress With Sneakers

A fitted long-sleeve tee under a sleeveless denim or corduroy pinafore dress gives a summer piece a second season. The tee adds warmth and coverage while the dress stays the focus. White sneakers keep it casual, and a mini backpack with simple studs finishes it. In cold months I swap to chunky ankle boots and add tights. Choose a tee with thin sleeves so they don't bunch at the pinafore's armholes.
19. T-Shirt With Wide-Leg Linen Trousers and Slide Sandals

On a hot day, a light cotton tee in white or cream with wide-leg linen trousers lets air move through the whole outfit. Nothing clings. Flat leather slides, a straw hat, a woven tote and fine necklaces make it resort-ready. Linen creases the moment you sit, which is part of its charm, but I pick trousers with a clean pleat and a structured waistband so they still look intentional by the afternoon.
20. T-Shirt With Pencil Skirt and Pointed-Toe Pumps

A fitted black tee tucked into a knee-length pencil skirt in a structured fabric is a tee that can sit in a meeting. Pointed pumps lengthen the leg, and a structured bag with one bracelet finishes it. Keep the skirt in black, navy, charcoal or a fine pinstripe. The tee has to be a good one, smooth with no stretched neckline, because tailoring next to a worn tee makes the tee look even more tired.
21. T-Shirt With Denim Overalls and Converse Sneakers

Classic denim overalls over a plain or striped tee are a nostalgic, practical pairing. The tee gives a clean base under the bib, and the relaxed fit keeps it comfortable all day. Classic canvas high-tops, a messy bun, small studs and a canvas backpack finish it. I'd choose medium or light-wash overalls for the most uses. Check the side buttons and strap length before buying; overalls that are too short in the torso pull uncomfortably when you sit.
22. T-Shirt With Palazzo Pants and Strappy Heeled Sandals

Wide palazzo pants in a bold print or jewel tone bring the drama, and a plain fitted white tee calms it down. Tuck it into the high waist so the top stays small against the volume below. Strappy heeled sandals peek out under the hem, and statement earrings with a clutch take it to evening. Have the palazzos hemmed with your heels on so they skim the floor. It's a good alternative to a dress for summer parties and rooftop dinners.
23. T-Shirt With Silk Maxi Skirt and Minimal Sandals

A bias-cut silk maxi has a drape that makes anything you pair with it look richer, and a simple crewneck tee is the most interesting partner. Cotton against liquid silk is the contrast. Flat minimal sandals, a fine chain, a slim leather watch and a small shoulder bag keep it understated. Champagne, navy, rose gold or olive skirts all work. Bias-cut silk clings at the hip, so I tuck the tee smoothly and skip a belt.
24. T-Shirt With Knit Vest and Tailored Shorts

A sleeveless knit vest over a white tee gives a preppy, layered look that suits warm days. Pair it with tailored shorts in a matching or near neutral. Loafers or ballet flats keep it polished, and a thin belt, a fine bracelet and a structured mini bag finish it. I fit the vest close at the armhole; a wide armhole lets the tee sleeve bunch out sideways. Smart enough for a relaxed office or brunch.
25. T-Shirt With Cropped Flare Jeans and Platform Boots

A fitted tee in a solid or fine stripe with cropped flares that end just above the ankle has a seventies feel without looking like fancy dress. Platform ankle boots with a chunky heel add height and carry the retro line. Round sunglasses and a suede crossbody finish it. The flare balances a plain top, and the fitted tee keeps the waist visible. Make sure the jean hem clears the boot shaft, so no ankle gap appears when you sit.
26. T-Shirt With Linen Shorts and Espadrilles

A relaxed white or light blue tee with beige or oatmeal linen shorts is the outfit I'd wear on a beach holiday. Neutral slip-on espadrilles, a woven belt, a straw tote and gold hoops finish it. The cut of the shorts is what keeps it from looking like pajamas, so look for a flat front and a mid-rise waist. Linen shorts wrinkle quickly; a linen-cotton blend holds a crease better.
27. T-Shirt With Satin Midi Skirt and Strappy Heels

A matte black or white tee with a glossy satin midi is a texture contrast that does almost all the work for you. Tuck the tee fully and add strappy heels to dress it up. A clutch, statement earrings and a bold lip take it to a dinner party. Satin shows creases and water marks, so I steam it before leaving and keep drinks away from the lap. The skirt carries the evening; the tee keeps it relaxed.
28. T-Shirt With Cargo Skirt and Combat Boots

A white or black tee tucked into an olive or khaki cargo maxi skirt is utility dressing in a softer shape. Lace-up combat boots give the skirt some grounding, and a chain necklace and mini crossbody finish it. The side pockets add detail without crowding the plain top. I roll the tee sleeves once for a relaxed shoulder. It works for concerts and city weekends.
29. T-Shirt Layered Over a Turtleneck With Straight-Leg Jeans

When it gets cold, a short- or long-sleeve tee over a thin fitted turtleneck in a different color adds warmth and a bit of interest. White over black is classic, and cream over beige is softer. Straight jeans and lug-sole loafers keep the bottom clean, and a wool coat over the shoulders with a leather tote finishes it. The turtleneck must be thin and fitted, or the tee's neckline and sleeves won't lie flat over it.
30. T-Shirt With High-Waist Wide-Leg Jeans and Clogs

A fitted white tee tucked into rigid high-rise wide-leg jeans, with leather clogs, gives you effortless Scandinavian style with very little effort. The wide denim adds structure, and the plain tee keeps it quiet. A canvas tote and sculptural silver earrings finish it. I choose jeans with a defined waist and a floor-grazing hem, and I make sure the hem length works with the clog's height. A good outfit for a relaxed office or a slow weekend.
31. T-Shirt With Matching Co-Ord Set

A matching co-ord, a tee-style top with wide-leg trousers or a midi skirt in oatmeal, sage or terracotta, takes all the decisions out of getting dressed. One color from shoulder to hem makes a long line that suits almost everyone. White sneakers or flat sandals keep it casual, and gold jewelry with a simple shoulder bag finishes it. I check that the two pieces were dyed together, because separately bought pieces in the same color often don't quite match.
32. T-Shirt With Belted Paperbag Trousers and Mules

Paperbag-waist trousers have the waist built in, so a plain tee tucked into belted paperbag trousers gets shape without any fuss. The gathered waist and self-tie belt add texture. Slip-on neutral mules, a structured handbag and small hoops keep it clean. I'd choose light crepe or a linen blend for the best drape. The gathered waist adds bulk, so if you're short in the torso, tuck the tee only at the front to keep the waist from looking thick.
33. T-Shirt With Sequin Skirt and Ballet Flats

A plain white or black tee with a sequin midi tones down the sparkle so the skirt works for a birthday dinner as easily as a holiday party. Ballet flats keep it comfortable all night, and a velvet clutch with crystal drop earrings adds a festive finish. Sequins scratch the inside of your arms and catch on knitwear, so I keep the top smooth cotton and skip a sweater over it.
34. T-Shirt With Bermuda Denim Shorts and Fisherman Sandals

Bermuda-length denim shorts look more grown-up than cutoffs, and they pair easily with a slightly oversized white tee half-tucked at the front. Fisherman sandals give your feet support for walking, and a canvas tote with a woven belt finishes it. The longer length makes the outfit suit more settings and more ages than short shorts. I'd wear it to outdoor markets or a park day.
35. Monochrome T-Shirt Outfit With Statement Belt and Matching Bag

Wearing a tee and trousers in the same shade, cream, beige, soft grey or olive, makes a basic outfit look planned. The single color creates a long line, and a belt with an interesting buckle becomes the focus. Match the bag to the belt, and finish with white sneakers or neutral flats. Tonal outfits rely on fabric quality, so I check the tee and trousers side by side in daylight; mismatched undertones show up fast in a one-color look.
Four Ways I Tuck a Plain Tee
Almost every outfit above depends on what happens at the waist, so here's how I do each tuck. A full tuck is for tailored trousers, pencil skirts and anything high-waisted: tuck the whole hem in, then lift your arms once so the fabric settles evenly above the waistband. A front tuck pushes only the center panel in, about the width of the belt buckle, and leaves the sides and back loose. It's the most forgiving one for jeans.
A side tuck puts one corner in at the hip and lets the rest hang, which works on wide-leg pants when a full tuck feels too neat. A knot is for skirts and wide trousers when the tee is too long to tuck neatly. On a thick tee, I tie it with the excess folded inside first so it lies flat.
Keeping white tees white
Underarm yellowing comes mostly from deodorant building up in the fabric, not from age. I let deodorant dry before dressing, wash whites inside out in cool water and keep them apart from darks. Skip the hot dryer, which shrinks cotton and sets stains. A white tee that has turned gray is usually ready to become a layering piece or a pajama top.
Five Good Tees Will Cover Most of These
Styling a plain tee isn't about owning lots of clothes. It's about how you combine what's already there. A knotted tee with a floral skirt and an oversized one over biker shorts are built from the same few basics. In my experience, five tees cover most of this list: a heavy white, a black, a fitted crew for layering, a stripe and one cropped or oversized shape. Start with two outfits that feel most like you, then build from there.
