A cargo skirt is a strange piece on paper: military pockets, heavy twill, and yet it ends up being one of the most wearable skirts I put on clients. It comes as a mini, midi or maxi, in olive, white, black leather or faded denim, and each one behaves differently. The rule I give everyone is the same, though: the skirt brings the bulk, so the top should be fitted and the shoes should decide the mood. Here are 35 full outfits built on that rule, most of them from pieces you probably already own.

Where the Pockets Sit on Your Hips and Thighs
With a cargo skirt, the pockets are the first thing I look at, because they decide where your outline gets wider. Two skirts in the same size can look completely different on the same body depending on how the pockets are made.
- Flat patch pockets sit close to the body and add very little width. They're the safest choice if your hips or thighs are fuller.
- Bellows pockets have folded sides that expand. They look more authentic but add bulk, especially when filled.
- Pockets placed high on the hip widen the hip line; pockets lower on the thigh pull the eye down the leg instead.
- Pocket flaps with snaps add more hardware and stiffness than flaps with hidden velcro or no closure.
Fabric changes everything too. Stiff cotton canvas holds its own shape and stands away from the body, which suits straight and slim hips. A softer twill, satin or washed cotton drapes and follows a curve. If you're pear-shaped, I'd look for a soft fabric, flat pockets placed lower down, and a midi length. Always size by the hip, not the waist, then have the waist taken in; a skirt that's tight at the hip pulls the pockets open and makes them gape.
1. Olive Cargo Mini Skirt With White Tank Top And Chunky Sneakers

If you've never worn a cargo skirt, start here. An olive mini with a white rib tank tucked in lets the pockets be the only detail. Chunky white sneakers nod to the early 2000s revival and their thick sole balances the stiff skirt better than a slim plimsoll would. A thin silver chain and a small black crossbody keep your hands free. The one thing I check is that the skirt's side pockets lie flat when the tank is tucked; if they flare out, the skirt is a size too small at the hip.
2. Khaki Cargo Midi Skirt With Black Bodysuit And Combat Boots

A khaki cargo midi with a black long-sleeve bodysuit gets its edge from the contrast. The bodysuit marks the waist, which a full cargo midi needs or it reads shapeless. Lace-up combat boots and a silver choker add grit. For an evening concert, swap the crossbody for a small shoulder bag and add a bold lip. A bodysuit beats a tucked tee with a heavy twill skirt, since there's no fabric bunching under the waistband.
3. Denim Cargo Maxi Skirt With White Crop Top And Platform Sandals

A light-wash denim cargo maxi with a white crop top that ends at the waistband is a relaxed warm-weather look. That small strip of skin stops a long skirt feeling heavy. Tan platform sandals add height and still let you walk a farmers market. Gold hoops, layered rings and a woven tote. Denim maxis are weighty, so I look for one with a front or side slit; without it, your stride is shorter than you'd like.
4. Black Cargo Mini Skirt With Graphic Tee And High-Top Sneakers

A black cargo mini with a vintage-style graphic tee is simple and easy to get right. I front-tuck the tee and let the back hang, which shows the waist without making the tee fight the skirt's waistband. Classic canvas high-tops keep it casual and grounded. A couple of beaded bracelets and a mini backpack. Pick a tee that's soft and slightly worn in; a stiff new cotton tee stands away from the body over a structured skirt.
5. White Cargo Midi Skirt With Pastel Cropped Sweater And Loafers

A white cargo midi softens a lot next to a pastel cropped sweater in lilac, baby blue or butter yellow. The sweater should end just above the skirt's waistband so the proportion stays clean. Cream loafers keep it polished, and a small pendant and top-handle bag finish it for brunch or a shower. White twill shows grass and coffee stains quickly, so I'd treat it with a stain repellent spray before a picnic and check the lining isn't see-through in sun.
6. Cargo Mini Skirt With Oversized Blazer And Pointed-Toe Heels

An oversized black or charcoal blazer over a white tank turns a cargo mini into something you could wear to a presentation that rolls into dinner. The sharp shoulder pulls against the casual skirt in a way that reads deliberate. The blazer should be long enough to reach about the hem of the mini, or a little short of it, not past it. Nude or black pointed heels lengthen the leg, and a slim belt over the tank gives the outfit a waist.
7. Olive Maxi Cargo Skirt With Striped Sweater And Ankle Boots

When it cools down, an olive cargo maxi with a cream and navy striped sweater is my go-to. The stripes add pattern without competing with the pockets. Tuck the front loosely and let the sides fall. Brown leather ankle boots with a small heel give warmth and stop the maxi from dragging. A tan crossbody and tortoiseshell hoops pull everything into the same earthy palette, which works well at a bonfire or a Sunday walk.
8. Black Leather Cargo Skirt With Silk Camisole And Strappy Heels

A black leather cargo skirt is already the strongest piece in the room, so I keep the top soft: a draped silk cami in emerald, burgundy or sapphire. Silk against matte leather is the contrast that makes it. Strappy black or metallic heels and a chain-strap bag. Leather doesn't breathe, so for a warm dinner I'd choose a faux leather with a stretch backing, and a lining helps it slide rather than stick when you sit.
9. Cargo Mini Skirt With Cropped Denim Jacket And White Sneakers

A cropped denim jacket is the most natural partner for a cargo mini. I choose a medium wash that ends right at the top of a high-waisted olive or khaki mini, over a fitted white tee. Two sets of pockets sounds like too much, but both are utility details, so they agree with each other. White sneakers, a baseball cap and tinted sunglasses for a weekend lunch or a day of thrifting.
10. Satin Cargo Midi Skirt With Cowl-Neck Tank And Heeled Mules

A satin cargo skirt mixes pocket details with a fabric that catches light as you move. A taupe or champagne satin midi with a cowl-neck tank in the same tone makes an expensive-looking column. Heeled mules extend the leg, and a structured clutch and pearl drops dress it up for a rehearsal dinner. Satin creases where you sit, and pockets on satin can sag if you load them, so I'd keep them empty for the evening.
11. Camo Cargo Mini Skirt With Strapless White Top And Ankle Boots

A camo cargo mini with a strapless white top is a night-out look with a bit of attitude. Bare shoulders balance the short skirt. Black pointed ankle boots keep it sharp, and a tiny shoulder bag holds your phone and keys. Skip the necklace. I'd only send this with a strapless top that has silicone grip at the top edge, or you'll spend the evening pulling it up.
12. Denim Cargo Midi Skirt With Button-Down Shirt And Loafers

A dark denim cargo midi with a white button-down, fully tucked, takes the cargo skirt toward preppy. A thin brown belt marks the waist and penny or horsebit loafers keep it collegiate. Smooth the shirt tuck at the sides so it doesn't puff over the pockets. It bridges casual Friday at the office and a weekend brunch; roll the sleeves and open one more button to shift it later in the day.
13. Beige Cargo Mini Skirt With Grey Tank Top And Strappy Sandals

A beige cargo mini with a soft gray rib tank is the simplest combination here and one of the most useful. The palette stays quiet and tonal. Tan or metallic flat sandals keep it light for hot weather, with a gold necklace, a few slim bangles and a beige bag. On very hot days I'd choose a cotton-linen twill skirt rather than thick canvas, since heavy cargo fabric holds heat.
14. Black Cargo Maxi Skirt With Fitted Turtleneck And Heeled Boots

A black cargo maxi works in winter more easily than you'd guess. With a slim black turtleneck it becomes one dark column, and the all-black palette makes the pockets look sleeker and less casual. Heeled ankle boots or knee-highs disappear under the hem and keep you warm. A long charcoal or camel wool coat over the top, a leather tote and silver hoops. Make sure the coat is longer than the skirt's pockets, or the coat hem cuts across them awkwardly.
15. Cargo Mini Skirt With Baby Tee And Y2K Sunglasses

A cropped baby tee in pastel pink, baby blue or a tiny logo tucked into a low or mid-rise cargo mini leans right into the early 2000s revival. Small oval sunglasses and flat slides keep it summery. I'd stop at one or two throwback touches, maybe a beaded choker and a scrunchie, because once every piece is retro it starts to look like a costume. Low-rise skirts need a tee that reaches the waistband, so check the gap when you raise your arms.
16. Cargo Midi Skirt With Cropped Cardigan And Ballet Flats

A cropped pastel or neutral cardigan softens a structured cargo midi. Button just the top one or two and let it fall open over a white cami. Mesh or satin ballet flats keep the soft feel going. A small pendant and a woven crossbody. Proportion matters here: the cardigan must end at the skirt's waistband, since a longer one hides the waist and makes a midi look dumpy.
17. Cargo Mini Skirt With Off-The-Shoulder Knit And Tall Boots

An off-the-shoulder knit in caramel, cream or rust with a cargo mini and tall boots is a good fall dinner outfit. Bare shoulders on top balance the coverage of the boots below. I choose boots with a slight heel and keep the gap between boot top and skirt hem fairly small, which looks more polished than a wide strip of thigh. A thin belt at the waist and a leather shoulder bag. Off-shoulder knits slide, so a top with elastic at the neckline stays put.
18. White Linen Cargo Midi Skirt With Sleeveless Button-Up And Espadrilles

A white linen cargo midi with a matching sleeveless button-up makes an all-white summer look. Linen's slub texture keeps the single color from looking flat, and the pockets keep it practical. Jute espadrilles, tortoiseshell sunglasses, a straw tote and a silk scarf in the ponytail. White linen can be sheer, so I check it against daylight and wear skin-tone underwear. Expect creases, and steam rather than iron if you can.
19. Cargo Mini Skirt With Racer Tank And Cropped Moto Jacket

A white or black rib racer tank under a cropped black moto jacket with a cargo mini mixes three textures: soft rib, cotton twill and matte faux leather. The jacket should end at the skirt's high waist, so the waist stays defined. Black combat boots or lug-sole loafers and slim rectangular sunglasses. I'd add a pair of opaque tights in cool weather; the boots and tights together make the leg one dark line.
20. Denim Cargo Midi Skirt With Striped Breton Top And Canvas Sneakers

A medium-wash denim cargo midi with a navy and white striped long-sleeve tee has an easy French feel. The stripes give pattern without competing with the pockets. Roll the sleeves to the elbow and half-tuck the front. White or ecru canvas sneakers, a red lip and gold hoops. On a shorter frame, I'd choose a narrower stripe, since wide stripes plus a midi can shorten the whole outline.
21. Olive Cargo Maxi Skirt With White Poplin Shirt And Leather Slides

An olive cargo maxi with a white poplin shirt mixes utility with clean tailoring. Wear the shirt open over a white cami, or knot it at the waist for more shape. Brown leather slides and a woven belt slung low, plus a leather bucket bag and tortoiseshell sunglasses. Poplin creases fast, which I actually like here; a slightly rumpled shirt suits the relaxed skirt better than a perfectly pressed one.
22. Black Cargo Mini Skirt With Lace-Trimmed Camisole And Heeled Sandals

A black cargo mini with a lace-trimmed satin cami in cream, blush or black is one of my favorite contrasts. The lace edge softens the hard pockets. Neutral heeled sandals and a small velvet or beaded evening bag take it into the night. Drop earrings and that's enough. Make sure the cami is long enough to stay tucked when you sit; short camis untuck from stiff skirts quickly.
23. Beige Cargo Maxi Skirt With Cropped Turtleneck And Pointed-Toe Flats

A beige cargo maxi in drapey twill with a cropped fitted turtleneck in cream, chocolate or black makes a long, clean line. The sweater ends just above the waistband, so there's no tucking or bunching. Pointed flats in a matching neutral and a long pendant draw the eye down the body. Add a trench for transitional weather and it works for a casual office or an afternoon gallery visit.
24. Cargo Mini Skirt With Oversized Hoodie And Dad Sneakers

An oversized hoodie over a cargo mini is pure comfort. Heather gray, cream or black, with the skirt hem showing just enough to give the outfit a shape. If the hoodie covers the skirt completely, you look like you forgot it, so I pick one that ends at the high hip. Chunky dad sneakers, a cap and a crossbody slung over the hoodie for a travel day or movie night.
25. White Cargo Mini Skirt With Bright Knit Tank And Platform Slides

A white cargo mini in crisp cotton twill is a summer base for a bright knit tank in tangerine, hot pink or kelly green. One strong color on top is plenty. Platform slides or jelly sandals, a shell necklace and oversized round sunglasses. A colorful woven tote brings it into resort territory. White twill skirts can show pocket bags through the front, so check them in daylight before you buy.
26. Denim Cargo Mini Skirt With Tube Top And Flip-Flops

On the hottest days, a denim cargo mini with a simple tube top takes a minute to put on. The strapless top shows some skin to balance the covered skirt. Leather or printed flip-flops keep it fully casual. A few beaded anklets and thin chains, and you're ready for the boardwalk. A tube top with a ribbed knit or smocked back stays up far better than a smooth jersey one.
27. Olive Cargo Midi Skirt With Puff-Sleeve Blouse And Heeled Loafers

A puff-sleeve blouse in cotton voile or a silk blend moves an olive cargo midi into smart-casual. The rounded sleeves contrast with the square military pockets below. Tuck it in fully and add a thin belt. Black or tan heeled loafers and a structured shoulder bag make it right for a creative workplace or a networking brunch. Big puff sleeves widen the shoulders, so on broad-shouldered clients I choose a smaller puff.
28. Black Cargo Midi Skirt With Sheer Long-Sleeve Top And Sock Boots

For a going-out look, a black cargo midi with a sheer mesh or lace long-sleeve top over a black bralette has an edge. Sharp black sock boots slide under the midi hem and make one long line. Layered silver chains, chunky rings and a small patent bag. It's my look for a concert or club night. Mesh can snag on rings and bag chains, so I'd keep the jewelry smooth.
29. Stone Grey Cargo Maxi Skirt With Halter Top And Wedge Sandals

A stone gray cargo maxi in a light fabric has a calm, almost minimal look, and a halter top in white, cream or gray lifts attention to the shoulders. Raffia or cork wedges give height on grass, where a thin heel would sink. A fringe crossbody and beaded bracelets soften the pockets. Halters suit square or broad shoulders well; on very narrow shoulders I might choose a wider strap.
30. Cargo Mini Skirt With Plaid Flannel Shirt And Hiking Boots

A khaki or olive cargo mini with an oversized plaid flannel is a cabin-weekend outfit. Wear the flannel open over a white or black tank, or tie it at the waist. Brown leather hiking boots with wool crew socks folded over the top are practical on trails and keep your ankles warm. A beanie and canvas backpack. For a real hike I'd swap the mini for longer leg coverage; scratchy brush is hard on bare legs.
31. Beige Cargo Midi Skirt With Navy Blazer And White Sneakers

A beige cargo midi with a fitted navy blazer looks collegiate and neat. The structured shoulders balance the relaxed skirt, and a white crewneck tee underneath keeps it approachable. White leather sneakers make it comfortable for a business-casual office. I'd keep the blazer fitted and hip-length; an oversized one with a midi cargo adds too much volume at once. A canvas tote and a slim watch.
32. Black Cargo Mini Skirt With Metallic Knit Top And Clear Heels

A metallic knit top in silver, gold or rose gold with a black cargo mini is instant party wear. The shine on top against a matte skirt feels festive. Clear or strappy metallic heels, a rhinestone mini bag and chandelier earrings. I'd keep hair and makeup simple with this much sparkle. Metallic knits can be scratchy, so try one on bare skin before buying for New Year’s Eve parties.
33. Olive Cargo Mini Skirt With Rugby Shirt And Retro Sneakers

An olive cargo mini with an oversized rugby shirt in bold stripes, navy and white or burgundy and cream, mixes preppy and utility. Tuck just the front and let the rest hang. Retro low-profile sneakers and white crew socks pulled to mid-calf continue the throwback. Rugby shirts are heavy cotton, so a front tuck works better than a full one. Ready for a campus stroll or a weekend flea market.
34. White Denim Cargo Maxi Skirt With Chambray Shirt And Raffia Accessories

A white denim cargo maxi with a light chambray shirt plays blue against white without going full double denim. I tie the shirt at the waist rather than tucking it, which marks the waist and keeps bulk out of the skirt. Raffia bag, wedges and a wide-brim hat bring summer texture, and shell or turquoise jewelry adds a touch of color. White denim needs a careful wash on cold to stay bright; wash it separately from the chambray the first few times.
35. Cargo Mini Skirt With Band Tee And Leather Blazer

To finish, a vintage band tee loosely tucked into a black or olive cargo mini, under a black leather blazer. The tailored leather dresses up the tee and keeps the tee from making the blazer too serious. Pointed black ankle boots continue the line, and layered silver necklaces with a chain-strap bag add shine. Leather blazers stiffen in the cold and soften with wear, so give a new one a few outings before a big night.
Mini, Midi or Maxi for Your Height and Shoes
Cargo skirts are heavier than most skirts, so length shows up more on the body. Here's how I match the length to the person wearing it.
Mini
The easiest length for petite women, since it shows the most leg. Sneakers, ankle boots and tall boots all work. On very tall women a mini can look shorter than intended, so check it seated.
Midi
The trickiest length. A hem at the widest part of the calf makes the leg look heavy; I aim for just below the knee or just above the ankle. Petite women look best with a midi that has a slit and a shoe with some height, like a block heel or chunky sole. Boots that slide under the hem are the simplest fix in cold weather.
Maxi
Great on tall women with flat shoes. If you're shorter, a platform sandal or a heeled boot keeps the hem off the ground and stops the skirt swallowing you. Check the hem in the actual shoes before having it shortened; a maxi that clears the floor in sneakers may drag in flats.
Give Those Pockets Something to Do
A cargo skirt is far more flexible than it looks on the hanger. An olive mini, a black leather midi and a white denim maxi each lead to completely different outfits. What they share is the balance: a structured, pocketed skirt needs a fitted top, a little layering and shoes that set the mood for where you're going. If you're buying your first one, I'd start with an olive or khaki midi in a medium-weight twill with flat pockets. Use these outfits as a starting point, then mix them with what's already in your closet.
