When I pack for a beach trip, the button-down shirt is the piece that earns the most space in the suitcase. It goes over a swimsuit at the pool, over a tank for errands, knotted at the waist with shorts, or fully buttoned as a short dress. Poolside, on the sand or at a casual lunch, it is what turns swimwear into an outfit. The shirt barely changes across these 35 looks; what changes is the layer under it and the shoes. Cotton, linen, crochet, gauze and satin each behave differently, and I've noted what to expect from each.

Knots, Half-Tucks and Belts That Stay Put
Most of these looks depend on one of three adjustments. Done carelessly, they slip or bunch within an hour. This is how I do each one:
- Front knot: unbutton the bottom three or four buttons, take one front panel in each hand, and tie a square knot, not a single twist. Tuck the ends up under the knot so they don't flap.
- Half-tuck: tuck only the front panel, about a hand's width either side of the center buttons, and pull it slightly loose so it blouses. A rigid tuck looks accidental.
- Belting an oversized shirt into a dress: fasten the belt, then lift the fabric a little above it all the way round so it falls evenly over the belt.
- Rolled sleeves: fold the cuff once, then fold again up to just below the elbow so the cuff edge shows. It holds better than a loose scrunch.
Thicker cotton holds a knot better than slippery satin or crinkle gauze. With those, a small hair elastic hidden inside the knot keeps it in place.
1. White Button Down Cover Up With Black Bikini and Flip Flops

This is the first beach look I teach anyone. Wear a crisp white button-down open over a black bikini, roll the sleeves to the elbow and let the shirttail hit the upper thigh. Matte black flip-flops, big sunglasses and a canvas tote are all it needs. The shirt takes you from the sand to poolside lounging or a taco stand without changing. Choose a cotton thick enough not to turn see-through once damp.
2. Oversized Linen Button Down Cover Up With One-Piece Swimsuit

An oversized linen shirt in sand or soft white over a sleek one-piece looks quietly expensive. Linen breathes and dries fast, and its slubby texture contrasts with the smooth swimsuit. I leave it open or fasten one button at the chest so it drapes rather than tents. Leather sandals, a straw visor and a woven crossbody take it from the pool deck to a patio lunch.
3. Striped Button Down Cover Up With Denim Shorts and Espadrilles

Blue and white stripes say nautical without trying. Tie the front hem of a striped cotton shirt over high-rise denim shorts, with a white bandeau or cropped tank peeking through. The knot should land at or just above the shorts waistband; lower and it hides the shorts entirely. Jute espadrilles, a straw fedora, gold hoops and a rattan bag finish it, and the flat espadrilles handle a long walk.
4. Crochet Button Down Cover Up With Bikini and Slide Sandals

A cream crochet shirt over a tonal bikini looks handmade and special. Open crochet gives shape but little sun protection, so I put sunscreen on underneath before I put it on. Crochet also snags easily on wooden loungers and rough bag straps. Tan or caramel slides, tortoiseshell sunglasses, a shell necklace and a straw tote keep it relaxed for a boardwalk stroll.
5. Sheer Button Down Cover Up With High-Waist Bikini and Wedge Sandals

A sheer shirt over a high-waist bikini gives a glimpse of the swimsuit with a bit of coverage. Sheer chiffon or voile billows as you walk, which is the point; push the sleeves up so they don't flap. Espadrille wedges dress it up for a pool party or rooftop bar. Layered fine gold necklaces, cat-eye sunglasses and a small bag finish it. Sheer polyester is warm in direct sun, so cotton voile is the better choice.
6. Chambray Button Down Cover Up With White Jeans and Sneakers

Chambray works as a light shirt-jacket over white straight jeans. Roll the sleeves and do a front half-tuck so the waist shows. A white ribbed tank keeps the palette clean, and white leather sneakers finish it. Chambray softens with every wash, so a new one may feel stiff at first. It is a good farmers' market or coffee-date outfit.
7. Floral Print Button Down Cover Up With Matching Shorts Set

A floral shirt with matching drawstring shorts set takes all the decisions away. Wear the shirt open over the matching bikini top and button the shorts at the natural waist. An all-over print reads as one piece in photos, which is why sets work so well on holiday. Metallic flat sandals and a neutral crossbody keep the focus on the print, from a cabana to an afternoon of shopping.
8. Button Down Cover Up Worn as a Mini Dress With Strappy Sandals

Buttoned up and belted, an oversized shirt becomes a short dress. Length is the thing I check first: it needs to reach mid-thigh after the belt has blousoned it, because cinching raises the hem by an inch or two. A slim leather belt and rolled sleeves give it shape. Neutral strappy flats, a structured shoulder bag and minimal gold jewelry make it right for a casual dinner, and red lipstick finishes it.
9. Tie-Front Button Down Cover Up With High-Waist Linen Shorts

A knotted front turns a cover-up into a cropped top for high-waist linen shorts. Butter yellow or blush pink keeps it seasonal. Leave two buttons open and tie the knot just above the waistband so a sliver of skin shows. The knot loosens through the day, so I tie it twice. Flat sandals, a simple pendant and a woven bucket bag suit a brunch or stroll through town.
10. Satin Button Down Cover Up With Wide-Leg Trousers and Heels

Satin takes a cover-up from beach to evening. A champagne or ivory satin shirt worn open over a fitted cami, both tucked into matching high-waist wide-leg trousers, reads as one long column. Pointed heels and a sleek clutch dress it up. The contrast of fluid satin and crisp trousers suits a sunset dinner. Satin water-marks, so keep it away from wet swimsuits and salt spray.
11. Button Down Cover Up With Black Leggings and Sporty Sandals

An oversized white or gray shirt over black leggings is what I wear after a swim or on a travel day. The longer length covers the hip, and leggings are comfortable for hours in a seat. Sporty slides or platform flip-flops, a baseball cap, a belt bag worn across the chest and big sunglasses keep it active and practical.
12. Denim Button Down Cover Up With Flowy Maxi Skirt

Light denim over a flowing maxi skirt is a high-low mix that works. Wear the shirt open over a white tank and tuck its front into a terracotta or olive skirt. Denim is warmer than cotton or linen, so I save this for late afternoon rather than midday. Brown leather sandals, a wide-brim straw hat and beaded bracelets finish a boho outfit for a beach market or outdoor festival.
13. Button Down Cover Up With Cargo Pants and Chunky Sandals

Olive or khaki on olive or khaki makes a utility set out of a shirt and cargo pants. Wear the shirt open over a white cropped tank and let the cargos sit low with cuffs rolled. The tonal pairing only works if the greens actually match; check them side by side in daylight. Chunky platform sandals, a canvas belt bag, tinted sunglasses and a slicked-back bun give it edge.
14. Button Down Cover Up With Biker Shorts and Crew Socks

Over black biker shorts, an oversized shirt balances sporty and styled. Leave it open over a sports bra or fitted tank, hem at mid-thigh, and add white crew socks with chunky sneakers. The socks look deliberate only if they are clean white and pulled up. A backward cap, a mini backpack and simple hoops make it an errand or travel outfit.
15. Button Down Cover Up Layered Over a Slip Dress

A neutral silk slip dress becomes daytime-wearable with a shirt over it. The relaxed shirt adds coverage over bare shoulders and takes away the evening shine. Knot it at the waist to show the slip's bias drape, or wear it long and loose. Flat mules or barely-there heeled sandals, a fine chain and a small bag take it from beach lunch to evening walk.
16. Button Down Cover Up With Palazzo Pants and Platform Sandals

Palazzo pants and a breezy shirt make a big vacation silhouette. I tuck the front and let the back hang open, which keeps the waist visible against all that volume. Palazzos need the right hem: with platform sandals on, they should clear the ground by half an inch, or they drag through sand and puddles. Oversized hoops, a cuff and a rattan bag finish it.
17. Button Down Cover Up With Joggers and Clean Sneakers

A soft cotton shirt open over a white tank with tapered joggers is my long-haul flight outfit. French terry joggers hold their shape and don't crease badly. Roll the cuffs once for a neater line and wear crisp white sneakers. A sleek backpack, fine chains and aviators keep it from looking like pajamas on a road trip or coffee run.
18. Button Down Cover Up With Satin Midi Skirt and Heeled Sandals

A solid shirt half-tucked into a satin bias-cut midi skirt is unexpectedly elegant. The crisp collar contrasts with the skirt's fluid drape. Ivory on champagne or soft blue on navy creates a near-monochrome effect. Bias-cut satin shows every line underneath, so a smooth slip helps. Heeled sandals, a beaded mini bag and pearl drops suit a sunset cocktail hour or a beach wedding after-party.
19. Button Down Cover Up With Matching Wide-Leg Pants Set

A crinkle cotton or gauze shirt and wide-leg pants set is the easiest thing to pack. Crinkled fabric is meant to look rumpled, so it comes out of a suitcase ready. Wear the shirt open over a bandeau or bikini top and let the pants float away from the body for airflow. Flat sandals and a canvas tote finish it. It looks put together in a hotel lobby and feels like sleepwear.
20. Printed Button Down Cover Up With White Shorts and Flat Sandals

A bold print, tropical leaves, abstract dots or vintage floral, carries the whole outfit when paired with crisp white shorts. Keep the shirt open over a white tank so the print stays in front, and choose tailored shorts for balance. Tan flat sandals, a straw bag and small gold jewelry stay quiet. It suits a vacation dinner or a day exploring a new city.
21. Button Down Cover Up With Tank Top and Straight-Leg Jeans

A blue shirt open over a white ribbed tank, tucked into straight jeans, is foolproof. Roll the sleeves below the elbow, add a simple leather belt and woven loafers or ballet flats. A canvas tote and fine gold jewelry finish it for a lunch date or afternoon shopping. It's what I wear the day after the beach when the swimsuit is drying.
22. Oversized Button Down Cover Up With Bike Shorts and Platform Sneakers

An extra-oversized shirt to mid-thigh over fitted bike shorts plays volume against sleekness. Layer a cropped tank or sports bra underneath and button just the top two buttons so the shirt flares open below. Platform sneakers add height and stay comfortable all day. A crossbody, tiny sunglasses and a claw clip finish an off-duty look.
23. Ruffle Button Down Cover Up With Linen Trousers and Wedges

Ruffles at the collar or cuffs make a shirt romantic. Wear it open over a camisole with relaxed linen trousers in a soft neutral. Ruffled cotton needs ironing more than a plain shirt, because flattened ruffles look tired. Espadrille wedges, a woven clutch and pearl or shell earrings suit a beachside bridal shower or garden party.
24. Button Down Cover Up With One-Piece Swimsuit and Slides

Sometimes the simplest combination wins. An unbuttoned white or cream shirt over a solid one-piece in emerald, rust or cobalt looks chic because the swimsuit color does the work. Push the sleeves up and pop the collar slightly. Coordinating slides, a canvas tote and black sunglasses make a minimal vacation uniform.
25. Button Down Cover Up With Matching Shorts and Pool Slides

A terry or waffle-knit shirt and matching shorts set is practical by the pool, because terry absorbs water like a towel. Throw it over a damp swimsuit and slide into rubber pool slides for the hot tub or snack bar. Terry is heavy when wet, so it takes a while to dry in humid air. A waterproof tote, a high ponytail and sporty sunglasses finish it.
26. Long-Sleeve Button Down Cover Up With Denim Cutoffs and Ankle Boots

For the end of summer, a long-sleeve cotton shirt over denim cutoffs bridges the seasons. Wear it open over a tank or bodysuit, and choose cutoffs with a longer inseam so the outfit isn't all leg and boot. Tan or brown suede ankle boots carry it toward fall. Fine layered necklaces and a leather crossbody suit bonfires and outdoor concerts on cooler evenings.
27. Button Down Cover Up With Sarong Skirt and Bare Sandals

A sarong tied as a skirt and an open shirt make a mix-and-match beach look. The shirt gives structure up top and the sarong brings pattern and movement below. Tie the sarong at the high hip with a double knot so it doesn't slip when you walk on sand. A triangle bikini top, ankle-wrap sandals, a shell anklet and a floppy hat finish a look with effortless island energy wherever you are.
28. Button Down Cover Up Half-Tucked With High-Waist Wide-Leg Jeans

Crisp poplin half-tucked into high-waist wide-leg jeans gives a sharp, architectural shape. Button the shirt about halfway, tuck the front panel, leave the back loose. Darker jeans make the white pop. Pointed mules or kitten heels, a slim belt, a structured bag and gold hoops take it to a casual Friday or a dinner with friends, a reminder that the beach shirt also works in town.
29. Button Down Cover Up Open Over a Crop Top and Cargo Skirt

An oversized shirt worn open over a fitted crop top and a cargo maxi skirt is a street-style layer. Keep everything tonal, cream, khaki and ivory, so the pieces read together. Cargo pockets add bulk at the hip, so the cropped fitted top keeps the upper half small. Chunky sneakers or combat boots, a mini shoulder bag and dark oval sunglasses finish it.
30. Button Down Cover Up With Matching Midi Skirt and Heels

A shirt and matching midi skirt set in a drapey fabric creates one column of color. Wear the shirt buttoned and tucked for polish, or open over a coordinating cami for something looser. Heeled sandals or slingbacks, a clutch and statement earrings make it right for a beach wedding or rehearsal dinner, with a cooler feel than a dress.
31. Gingham Button Down Cover Up With White Shorts and Basket Bag

Blue or pink gingham has picnic charm. Wear it open over a white tank or bandeau with crisp white cotton shorts. Roll the sleeves and leave the collar loose. Small-check gingham hides the wrinkles of a day out better than plain white. A straw basket bag, white sneakers or canvas espadrilles and a silk scarf in your ponytail suit a market morning or outdoor brunch.
32. Button Down Cover Up With Wide-Leg Linen Pants and a Straw Hat

For full sun coverage that still feels light, an oversized neutral shirt open over a tank with flowing wide-leg linen pants is my pick. Covering up with loose woven cotton or linen is more comfortable than reapplying sunscreen every hour. The vertical line from shirt to pant hem lengthens the body. A wide-brim straw hat, leather slides and a big woven tote suit a resort breakfast or vineyard tour.
33. Crinkle Gauze Button Down Cover Up With Bikini and Beaded Sandals

Crinkle gauze in coral or turquoise is the shirt to throw in a beach bag, because its pre-wrinkled texture survives being stuffed. Wear it open over a coordinating or contrasting bikini with beaded slides that pick up the color. Bright gauze can fade quickly in sun and chlorine, so rinse it after each wear. Beaded bracelets, mirrored sunglasses and a sarong knotted on your tote complete it.
34. Button Down Cover Up With Tailored Trousers and Pointed-Toe Flats

A silk or good cotton shirt can also be a real shirt. Button it fully and tuck it into black, navy or charcoal ankle trousers for meetings or lunches. Pointed flats keep it streamlined and comfortable. A leather tote, a slim watch and simple studs finish it. If you only pack one shirt, make it one that can do this.
35. Button Down Cover Up Layered Over a Maxi Dress and Sandals

Worn open over a tank maxi dress, a light shirt becomes a duster. It adds structure to a soft silhouette, and the open front creates vertical lines that lengthen the body. Keep the dress and shirt in complementary neutrals. The shirt should be shorter than the dress by at least a hand's width, or it competes with the hem. Strappy flats, layered pendants and a slouchy hobo bag suit beachside dinners and sightseeing.
Sizing a Shirt for Cover-Up Duty
A cover-up shirt is cut differently from one you'd wear to work. I look for three things when buying one:
- Length to at least mid-thigh, with a curved shirttail hem. Anything shorter won't cover a swimsuit or work as a dress.
- Room through the shoulder and body. Sizing up one or two sizes, or buying a men's shirt, gives the drape these looks need.
- A fabric you can't see through when damp. Hold it up to the light, then imagine it a shade darker and wet.
Sunscreen, Salt and a White Shirt
White cover-ups take a beating on holiday. Some sunscreen ingredients can leave yellow or orange marks on white cotton, especially when washed in hard water, so let sunscreen sink in before putting the shirt on and treat collars and underarms with a stain remover before washing. Avoid chlorine bleach on those marks, which can make them worse.
Rinse shirts in fresh water after the sea or pool, because salt and chlorine both stiffen and fade fabric. Dry them in the shade if you can, and linen in particular will soften with every wash.
Two Shirts Cover Most of a Beach Trip
A button-down earns its place because it changes shape: a dress, a jacket, a cropped top, a work shirt. Knotting, tucking and rolling do most of that work, along with what you wear underneath and on your feet. I keep one white cotton and one linen or chambray shirt for warm-weather trips, and when I am packing for a beach vacation those two cover nearly every outfit here. Buy them a size larger than you would for a fitted shirt, and they will layer over almost anything.
