Most closets I go through have five or six pairs of trousers in them and one that actually gets worn. The others aren't bad; they just never got paired with the right top and shoe. Trousers carry more outfits than any other piece, from tailored wool for the office to satin for a night out to cargo pants on a Saturday. Below are 30 combinations I'd put together, with what I check on the trouser itself before I build anything around it.

Rise, Inseam and Leg Opening: Reading a Trouser Before You Buy
Before I think about tops or shoes, I look at three measurements on the trouser itself. They decide which of the outfits below will work on you and which will fight you.
Rise
The rise is the distance from the crotch seam to the top of the waistband. A high rise sits at or above the navel and makes the leg read longer, which is why most of the wide-leg looks here use one. A mid rise is easier for short torsos, since a very high waistband can push up into the ribs when you sit.
Inseam
The inseam decides where the hem lands. Full-length wide legs want a long inseam so the hem nearly touches the floor in your shoes. Cropped and ankle styles are deliberately shorter; if a cropped pair hits mid-shin on you, it was cut for someone shorter and will look accidental.
Leg opening
A wide opening needs a fitted top. A slim opening shows the shape of the leg and every shoe choice. Straight sits between the two and is the easiest place to start if you're unsure.
1. Wide Leg Trouser Outfit With Sneakers

For a Saturday of errands, I start with high-waisted wide-leg trousers in beige or camel and tuck a fitted white ribbed tank into them. The fitted top is the point: wide trousers plus a loose top turns into a lot of fabric. An oversized denim jacket goes over it, chunky white sneakers underneath. A black leather belt marks the waist and stops the tank from untucking every time you reach for something. Slouchy tote, gold hoops, sunglasses, out the door.
2. Tailored Trouser Office Outfit

Charcoal tailored trousers with a sharp crease and straight leg, a white button-down tucked in, and a matching single-breasted blazer: it's a suit, and a suit still does the job at work. I always look for a little stretch in the weave, around two percent elastane, because pure wool trousers bag at the knee after a day of sitting. Pointed black pumps, a fine chain, small studs, a structured black bag and a plain watch. Nothing more.
3. Leather Trouser Outfit For Winter

Black leather trousers feel luxurious, and on a cold day they block wind better than wool does. I prefer a straight or slightly slouchy cut over skinny; tight leather creases at the knee and holds those lines. A chunky cream roll-neck tucked in gives the texture contrast, and a camel wool coat goes over it all. Block-heel ankle boots in black leather, a matching shoulder bag, tortoiseshell sunglasses. Faux leather is fine here but tends to crack at the creases sooner than real hide.
4. Cargo Trouser Casual Outfit

Olive cotton cargos with big side pockets and a straight leg are practical in the real sense: you can carry your phone without a bag. Keep the pockets empty or nearly so, though, because anything bulky in them widens the hip. A black cropped graphic tee tucked in gives shape, with a boxy black utility jacket over it. Chunky-soled combat boots and a black backpack carry the utility theme through; a baseball cap if you want it. Good for a coffee run or a long afternoon in the park.
5. Satin Trouser Evening Outfit

Chocolate satin wide-leg trousers with an elastic waist look dressed up and feel like loungewear. Satin shows every line underneath, so I check them in daylight against smooth underwear before anything else. A champagne silk camisole catches the light, and gold strappy heeled sandals lengthen the leg. When the evening cools, a slim black tailored blazer adds structure. A small beaded clutch and layered gold pendants are all the jewelry it needs for a dinner date or a gallery opening.
6. Linen Trouser Summer Outfit

Linen is the fabric I tell people to wear when it's truly hot, because it wicks moisture and dries fast. Cream linen trousers in a relaxed wide leg, with a sleeveless linen button-down tucked in, in sage or powder blue. Linen creases within minutes of sitting; accept it, or choose a linen-viscose blend that wrinkles less. Woven leather flat sandals, a wide straw hat, a canvas tote. It moves from a farmers market to a seaside lunch without changing.
7. Black Trouser Monochrome Outfit

All black is foolproof only if the blacks match. Different fabrics fade to slightly different blacks, and side by side you'll see it. Start with high-rise wide-leg trousers that just touch the floor in your shoes, then a fitted black sleeveless bodysuit, which stays tucked without bunching. A long tailored coat over the shoulders adds drama. Black pointed kitten heels and a black belt with a gold buckle break up the column. Gold cuffs and a structured bag finish it.
8. White Trouser Spring Outfit

White trousers need one thing checked before anything else: are they opaque enough? Hold them up to the window. A lined pair or a heavier twill saves you from pocket bags showing through. Then tuck a lavender cashmere crewneck in, slip into nude suede ballet flats with small bows, and carry a beige trench over the arm for April showers. White leather crossbody, pearl drops. A good one for brunch, a baby shower or a garden walk.
9. Cream Trouser Neutral Outfit

Tonal neutrals look expensive mostly because of fabric. Cream wide-leg trousers with real drape and a center crease do the heavy lifting; a stiff cheap fabric would sit away from the body and kill the line. A black-and-white striped long-sleeve tee keeps it casual, and a black blazer over the shoulders adds structure. Black suede pointed mules should peek out from under the hem by an inch or two. Black shoulder bag, gold hoops. Easy for a casual Friday or a day sightseeing.
10. Gray Trouser Work Outfit

Light gray can look flat, so I give it a color partner. A powder-blue cotton poplin button-down tucked into light gray tapered trousers with a clean press is crisp without being a suit. Tapered legs suit straight or slim frames; if your hips are wider than your shoulders, a straight leg balances better. Roll the sleeves once. Black loafers with a gold chain across the vamp add personality, along with a slim belt, a black tote and a watch on a leather strap.
11. Navy Trouser Preppy Outfit

Navy is the anchor of a preppy outfit. Mid-rise navy straight trousers with a crisp press, a white Oxford with the collar barely up, and a cream V-neck sweater vest over it. The vest should end at the waistband, not below it, or the layers start stacking at the hip. Burgundy bit loafers, a brown satchel and a woven belt pull the palette together. Pearl studs and a red lip finish it. It reads traditional, and that's what makes it work.
12. Brown Trouser Fall Outfit

Chocolate brown is the color I'd pick for a fall trouser if you only buy one. High-waisted brown wool-blend tailored trousers, a fitted cream merino wool turtleneck tucked in, and an open caramel chunky cardigan for texture. Merino is thin enough to tuck flat, which a chunky turtleneck isn't. Dark brown suede ankle boots with a stacked heel, a tan shoulder bag and a gold coin pendant keep everything warm. It suits apple picking, a bonfire or a weekend brunch.
13. Flared Trouser Retro Outfit

Seventies flares only work if the trouser fits tight through the hip and kicks out from the knee; a flare that starts at the thigh just looks wide. Black high-waisted flares, a fitted vintage-style graphic tee tucked in tight, and black platform heeled boots for height. The hem should cover most of the boot and stop a centimeter off the floor. A burgundy suede fringe jacket adds movement, with round sunglasses and layered chains. Great for a concert or a vintage market.
14. Cropped Trouser With Ballet Flats

Black cropped trousers that end just above the ankle bone and ballet flats are a classic match, because the gap of bare ankle keeps the look light. The leg should be slim with a clean crease. A white cotton blouse with a delicate pussy-bow neck tie softens the tailoring. Pick flats with a small heel; completely flat soles get tiring on long days. A powder-pink pearl-button cardigan and a small quilted chain bag make it ladylike for a shower or tea.
15. Pleated Trouser Elegant Outfit

Pleated trousers move as you walk, which a flat front can't do. High-waisted charcoal pleated wide-legs with a fitted black turtleneck bodysuit keep the top sleek so the pleats get the attention. I check that the pleats lie flat when you stand still; if they spread open, the trousers are too tight at the hip. A long ivory wool-blend coat over the shoulders, black suede pointed heels, a black clutch with silver hardware and chunky silver drops. For an evening cocktail party or the theater.
16. Corduroy Trouser Cozy Outfit

Corduroy is the texture I go to once it turns cold, and golden tan corduroy wide-leg trousers with an elastic waist are comfortable for a long day, and a cream fisherman cable knit tucked loosely gives warmth. Brown suede Chelsea boots with lug soles grip on wet leaves. A dark green waxed cotton jacket shrugs off light rain; re-wax it once a season. A plaid wool scarf and a leather backpack, and you're set for a leaf walk or a cabin weekend.
17. Track Pant Sporty Outfit

Sporty pieces look sharp when one thing in the outfit is tailored. Black track pants with a side stripe and cuffed ankles, a crisp white crewneck sweatshirt, then an oversized beige blazer over the top. The blazer is what turns it into an outfit. Make sure its shoulders are generous enough to fit over the sweatshirt without pulling at the back. Retro black-and-white sneakers, a nylon belt bag worn crossbody, black sunglasses. Airport to lunch.
18. Sweatpant Lounge Outfit

Sweatpants look intentional when they match the top and something structured goes over them. Picture heather gray wide-leg sweatpants with a brushed inside, a matching gray cropped hoodie, and a long camel wool coat. The coat has to be longer than the hoodie by a good margin, ideally to mid-calf. White platform sneakers, a black leather shoulder bag and a simple silver watch. School run, travel day or a coffee with friends.
19. Palazzo Trouser Beach Outfit

Palazzo pants were made for warm beach evenings: they let air circulate and cover the legs from mosquitoes. Turquoise printed palazzos with a wide, sweeping leg go with a plain white halter crop top. Long palazzos drag on sand, so hem them to clear the ground in flat shoes. Flat gold sandals, beaded shell necklaces, stacked bangles, a rattan clutch and round sunglasses. Ideal for a boardwalk walk or a seaside restaurant.
20. Culotte Trouser Street Style

Culottes have an awkward reputation, mostly because of the wrong shoe. With black tailored culottes that hit mid-calf in a structured A-line, I want a heeled sock boot that hugs the ankle; a flat shoe makes the leg look short. A white square-neck bodysuit keeps the tuck smooth and a cropped leather moto jacket adds edge. A silver chain-link belt bag at the waist, small silver hoops. Downtown for gallery nights or brunch.
21. High Waisted Trouser With Crop Top

A crop top with high-waisted trousers shows a sliver of skin without much risk. Camel high-waisted wide-legs fitted through the hip, with a black ribbed crop tank that stops just above the waistband, about an inch of skin. I'd check the gap while sitting; if it widens to several inches, a slightly longer tank works better. An oversized cream blazer gives coverage, with black pointed slingbacks, a gold-buckle belt and a black bag.
22. Slim Fit Trouser Sleek Look

Slim trousers suit you best if you have a straight or petite frame; on curvier hips, the narrow ankle can make the hip look wider. Black slim cropped trousers, a burgundy silk V-neck blouse tucked in, and a black velvet blazer for depth. Velvet crushes when packed, so hang it. Black stiletto ankle boots continue the leg line. A small satin clutch and chandelier earrings for a dinner party or a rooftop bar.
23. Printed Trouser Statement Outfit

Bold printed trousers need everything else to stay quiet. An abstract watercolor print in cobalt, emerald and violet goes with a plain black sleeveless matte jersey top. Black strappy mid-heel sandals and a black clutch don't compete, nor do small onyx studs. A low ponytail keeps the neckline clean. The scale of the print matters: large prints add visual width, so if you're petite, pick a smaller repeat. Gallery openings and creative events suit it.
24. Plaid Trouser Fall Look

Plaid trousers in rust, olive and tan look refined when the cut is straight and tailored; a pleated or baggy plaid starts to look like a costume. A cream cashmere crewneck calms the pattern. Brown leather knee-high boots worn under the hem make the leg longer. Make sure the plaid lines meet at the side seams; badly matched checks are a sign of cheap cutting. Add a dark brown wool blazer, a structured satchel and a chunky scarf for Thanksgiving or a pumpkin patch.
25. Animal Print Trouser Night Out

Leopard print is a neutral if you keep everything else black. Straight-leg leopard trousers in a silky crepe, a black silk cami tucked in, and black patent stilettos. A tailored black blazer over the shoulders keeps it structured. I'd skip shiny jewelry beyond gold statement earrings and an envelope clutch; too many accessories and the print starts fighting them. A birthday dinner or a night out.
26. Red Trouser Bold Outfit

Red trousers are the fastest way to wake up an outfit. Cherry red crepe wide-legs with a white silk blouse half-tucked in front, and nude suede pointed pumps that lengthen the leg without taking attention away. Match the red lip to the trousers' undertone, blue-red with blue-red. A white structured bag, gold oval hoops and a thin gold bracelet. Crepe resists creasing, which is why I prefer it for a long day of lunch and errands.
27. Pastel Trouser Soft Outfit

Powder blue wide-legs in flowy crepe with a white eyelet camisole and a cream cropped cardigan over the shoulders give a soft, vintage feel. Pale pink suede ballet flats with ankle ties keep it delicate; suede marks easily on wet grass, so spray it before a garden party. A white wicker crossbody, a beaded bracelet and rose gold studs. It's dreamy and romantic, and it suits a bridal brunch or a spring walk.
28. Matching Trouser Set Co-Ord

A co-ord saves you from making decisions. A sage linen-blend set with a cropped boxy shirt and matching wide-leg trousers can be worn buttoned up or open over a white bralette. Check that the shirt hem meets the trouser waistband when your arms are down; a cropped shirt that's too short leaves a gap you didn't plan for. Tan flat strappy sandals, a straw visor and a jute tote. Summer vacations, resort lunches, a beach wedding.
29. Bootcut Trouser With Heeled Boots

Bootcut trousers with heeled boots make the leg look longer than almost anything, because the heel is hidden. Your dark indigo bootcut trousers should be slim through the thigh and open slightly at the knee, with the hem covering most of the boot. Have them hemmed while wearing the boots, never flats. A white ribbed mock-neck tucked in, a black tailored wool coat, black suede pointed boots and a black belt and tote. It flatters most frames for office or dinner.
30. Drawstring Trouser Relaxed Outfit

For days when only comfort will do, soft black drawstring trousers in a fluid fabric look tidier than leggings and feel nearly as easy. An oversized washed gray tee goes in with a loose front tuck, and a long beige knit duster cardigan adds a layer that moves. White leather platform slip-ons give a bit of height. A big canvas tote, a topknot. Travel days and working from a café. Watch the drawstring: tie it inside the waistband if you're tucking.
Have Them Hemmed in the Shoes You'll Wear
Most trousers are sold long on purpose, and the single best thing you can do for them is a proper hem. Bring the exact shoes to the tailor. A pair hemmed for flats will drag under a block heel; a pair hemmed for heels will pool over sneakers.
- Wide-leg and bootcut: hem to about a centimeter off the floor in the shoe you'll wear most, covering most of the heel.
- Straight-leg: a slight break on the top of the shoe, or none at all for a cleaner line.
- Cropped and ankle: the hem should land at or just above the ankle bone, so there's a clear gap of skin.
- Satin and silky crepe: ask for a blind hem, because machine stitching shows through shiny fabric.
If you split your week between flats and heels, it's worth owning two pairs of your favorite cut, each hemmed for one shoe height.
Wool, Linen, Leather and Satin Each Need Different Care
Wool trousers rarely need washing. Brush them after wearing, hang them by the hem from a clip hanger so the crease drops out, and steam rather than iron to avoid shine. Linen can go in a gentle wash, but take it out damp and hang it to finish drying. Satin and crepe should be washed cold or dry cleaned, and turned inside out to protect the surface. Leather needs only a wipe and a conditioner once or twice a year; never put it near a radiator to dry.
Your Trousers Can Do More Than You Think
A pair of trousers that fits well can carry more different outfits than almost anything in your closet, from sharp office tailoring to relaxed weekend pairs. What makes each combination work is mostly proportion: fitted with wide, cropped with a visible ankle, long with a heel hidden underneath. Get the hem right for the shoes you wear most, find the waist, and the trousers you already own will start getting worn.
