On a family trip, the person packing for everyone usually packs for herself last, in about ten minutes. That's fine if your own clothes are planned to mix and match. When I build a summer vacation wardrobe, I start from the days you'll actually have: beach mornings, a theme park, a long travel day, one or two dinners out and probably a photo. Breathable fabrics and shoes you can walk in for hours matter more than having lots of options. The 30 outfits below cover all of those days, and most of them share pieces, so a small suitcase can hold more of them than you'd think.

Planning a Week of Looks From One Palette
I plan family vacation packing on paper before anything goes in the bag. Write down each day and what it holds, then count: most week-long summer trips need two or three beach outfits, one or two walking days, a travel day, two dinners and a photo outfit.
Next, choose one base color for bottoms, such as denim blue, sand or white, and two or three accent colors for tops and dresses. When every top goes with every bottom, six pieces make nine outfits, and you stop needing a separate plan for each day.
- Roll knits and linen; fold crisp cotton and poplin flat on top.
- Wear the heaviest shoes and the jacket on the plane.
- Put one complete outfit and a swimsuit in your carry-on in case a checked bag runs late.
- Leave the most delicate piece at home unless you know you'll be somewhere to wear it.
1. Linen Matching Set With Woven Accessories

A linen shirt and matching relaxed shorts in sand, ivory or sage give you an outfit you don't have to think about, and on a trip each half also works with other things. Roll the sleeves and leave the shirt out. Linen creases in a suitcase, so I pack it rolled rather than folded, and the creases that remain look relaxed on a loose set. Flat leather slides keep up when the kids run for the ice cream stand. A woven tote for sunscreen and snacks, tortoiseshell sunglasses and small gold hoops finish it.
2. Flowy Floral Maxi Dress And Flat Sandals

A floral maxi dress gives you a whole outfit in one pull, and that's gold on a trip. Lightweight rayon or cotton voile packs small and keeps you cool. I prefer a smocked bodice or adjustable straps, so the fit holds through a long day of walking. Prints are smart for travel because they hide small marks from sunscreen and lunch. Tan or metallic flat sandals, a woven crossbody and a wide-brim straw hat for midday shade round it out. Rayon wrinkles in the bag, so hang it in the bathroom while you shower and the steam drops most of them.
3. White Eyelet Midi Dress With Espadrille Wedges

A white eyelet midi looks crisp, and eyelet cotton is woven with small holes, so it breathes well in humidity. The midi length covers without feeling heavy. Canvas espadrille wedges give you a little height and stay steady on cobblestones and boardwalks, as long as the wedge is low. A thin raffia belt marks the waist, and a scalloped clutch or mini straw bag, pearl studs and a soft pink lip keep it light. The catch is white on a trip: I'd pack a stain stick and save this for the evening, after the sand and juice boxes.
4. Co-Ord Shorts Set With White Sneakers

For theme parks, zoos and long walking days, a matching shorts set is the workhorse. A short-sleeve collared top with drawstring shorts in gingham, stripe or a fruit print looks planned in photos and feels like pajamas. The shoes are the real decision. Cushioned white leather sneakers that you've already worn for a week at home are essential; new ones on a 20,000-step day cause blisters by lunch. A mini backpack keeps essentials secure on rides, and a cap with sporty sunglasses handles the sun.
5. Denim Cutoffs And Striped Button-Down Shirt

Blue-and-white stripes with denim cutoffs say coastal summer with no effort. Pick a mid-rise cutoff with a slightly relaxed leg so you can bend and crouch without tugging; very short, tight cutoffs ride up every time you kneel in the sand. An oversized cotton striped shirt, sleeves rolled and tied at the front, gives you a cropped shape and a layer for later. Flat studded sandals or huarache slides, a canvas beach tote and a shell anklet suit boardwalk evenings and seafood dinners.
6. Tropical Print Matching Family Set

Coordinating a family doesn't mean matching. Choose a tropical print with three or four colors, then give each person one piece in it and let the rest stay solid: a sundress for mom, a short-sleeve button-up for dad, rash guards or tees for the kids. That keeps it from looking like a uniform. Neutral flip-flops or jelly sandals handle sand and water, and a mesh beach bag lets sand fall out. A high ponytail and lip gloss are all you need for the photo.
7. High-Waisted Linen Pants And Crochet Top

A crochet top adds vacation texture without weight, and it rolls into a corner of a suitcase. Choose a sleeveless white or cream one with small, tight holes, with a smooth bralette in a matching tone underneath. High-waisted wide-leg linen pants in olive, sand or terracotta give a long line and catch the breeze. Toe-loop sandals, a raffia bag, round sunglasses and a low bun finish it. Crochet snags easily, so I keep it away from beach chairs and Velcro straps and hand-wash it in the sink.
8. Romper With Slide Sandals

A cotton or chambray romper is one piece and done. A waist tie gives it shape, and a button front is the detail I insist on, because bathroom stops with little kids are quick and frequent. Without buttons, you're stepping out of the whole thing in a tiny stall. Metallic or snakeskin slides add polish, a nylon belt bag worn crossbody keeps your hands free, and stacked thin gold bracelets finish it for a market morning and a casual family dinner.
9. Nautical Navy And White Stripes

A navy-and-white striped midi has a seaside feel that photographs clearly against blue water and sky. Navy is more forgiving than black in strong sun, and it hides a splash of sauce. Horizontal stripes add width where they cross the body, so if that worries you, look for a vertical stripe or a dress with the stripes running diagonally on the skirt. Ankle-tie espadrille flats, a structured navy crossbody and a thin red ribbon in a low ponytail make it right for a harbor town or a sunset cruise.
10. Cotton Tank Top And Tiered Maxi Skirt

A fitted ribbed tank with a tiered maxi skirt works because the plain top and big skirt balance. A white or black tank anchors a soft watercolor floral or block print, and an elastic waist stays comfortable through a long brunch. Tiered skirts take a lot of room in a bag, so choose a light cotton that compresses well. Shimmery flat sandals, a rattan purse, pearl drops and a loose updo finish it.
11. Oversized Linen Shirt And Biker Shorts

An oversized linen shirt in butter yellow or sky blue does double duty on a trip: it's a cover-up at the pool and a top on its own. Wear it open over a white cropped tank and matte black biker shorts that stay put on active days. The mix of loose linen and sleek activewear looks modern. Pale linen also shields shoulders from the sun better than sunscreen alone on a long boat or park day. Chunky white platform sandals or sport slides, a graphic canvas tote, aviators and a claw clip complete it.
12. Strapless Sundress And Flat Sandals

On the hottest days, a strapless sundress in smocked stretch cotton is the coolest thing you can wear. The elastic bodice holds itself up without underwire or straps, and the short A-line skirt lets air move. I'd test it first by lifting your arms and bending over at home; a loose bodice slips down with every move. Coral, lavender or lime brightens photos. Flat thong sandals, a beaded wristlet for the evening and a fine gold chain at the neck finish it.
13. Ribbed Knit Two-Piece Set

A ribbed knit tank and midi skirt set packs small, doesn't wrinkle and stretches after a big lunch, which makes it one of the best travel pieces on this list. Mocha or oatmeal give you a neutral base for brighter accessories. Ribbed knits cling a little, so a smooth slip or shorts under the skirt helps on hot days. Cork platform slides, a patterned scarf tied around a low ponytail, a woven bucket bag and bold resin earrings give it a crafted, vacation feel.
14. Gauze Cover-Up Over Swimsuit And Flip-Flops

Poolside days need a cover-up that works as hard as your swimsuit. A long open-front gauze kimono in white or indigo goes over a one-piece or bikini and dries quickly. Gauze has a loose weave, so it shades without trapping heat, though it isn't real sun protection on its own. Rubber flip-flops with some arch support, a big waterproof tote, a sporty visor and polarized cat-eye sunglasses complete it. A sarong tied at the waist covers you for the walk to lunch.
15. Matching Rash Guard And Board Shorts

Active family beach days need gear that stays put through waves, sand and sunscreen. A long-sleeve UPF rash guard means far less sunscreen to reapply on your arms and back, which matters when you're also chasing small children. Quick-dry board shorts at mid-thigh give coverage without bulk and move easily from boogie boarding to sandcastles. Water-friendly sport sandals with adjustable straps prevent blisters on hot sand, and a mesh sun hat, waterproof phone pouch and tinted zinc lip balm finish it.
16. Smocked Dress And Platform Sandals

A smocked cotton mini with puffed sleeves looks sweet in photos. The all-over smocking hugs gently and stays put when you lift a toddler onto your hip, which a loose mini doesn't. Gingham or a daisy print keeps it playful. A mini gets short fast when you bend, so I'd wear thin bike shorts under it on active days. Cork platform sandals add stability, and a woven saddle bag and a silk scarf in a half-up ponytail finish it.
17. Paperbag Waist Shorts And Puff-Sleeve Top

Paperbag waist shorts in crisp cotton are a dressier option than cutoffs, with a self-tie belt that marks the waist. Tuck a puff-sleeve blouse in white eyelet or a small floral into them. I like this for a lunch out after a beach morning. Cotton paperbag shorts crease where you sit, so a cotton-linen blend that looks fine slightly rumpled is easier to travel with. Low block-heel mules, a mini top-handle bag, thin gold hoops and a low ponytail complete it.
18. Breezy Jumpsuit And Wedge Sandals

A wide-leg jumpsuit in fluid crepe or Tencel is the one-piece answer for a family dinner out. Look for a tie belt or shirring at the waist and a V-neck. Crepe and Tencel barely wrinkle, which matters after days in a suitcase. A cropped wide leg shows off woven wedges and keeps the hem off restaurant floors. A bamboo-handle clutch and a long pendant finish it. The trade-off is bathroom trips, so pick one that unzips easily on the side.
19. Bermuda Shorts And Polo Shirt Combo

Longer Bermuda shorts in tailored linen or cotton twill look polished on travel days. A black or navy pair with a slim cotton polo tucked loosely in front feels preppy. Twill holds its crease and doesn't wrinkle much in a bag, and dark shorts hide the grime of airports and trains. White or beige leather sneakers, a structured canvas tote, a leather watch and a thin chain bracelet finish it for a sightseeing day.
20. Halter Neck Maxi Dress And Heeled Sandals

For an evening out, a halter maxi in emerald, cobalt or fuchsia has presence without fuss. It sweeps around the ankles and shows the shoulders. Saturated colors hold up better than pastels in evening photos with a flash. Low block heels handle uneven sidewalks, which matter more than height on a trip. A metallic clutch, chandelier earrings and soft waves complete it. I'd check that the halter isn't too tight at the neck; after a few hours it can pull uncomfortably.
21. T-Shirt Dress And Chunky Sneakers

A T-shirt dress is the hardest-working piece in a summer suitcase. A midweight cotton one with side slits and a curved high-low hem is roomy and airy, and midweight matters: thin jersey clings and shows every line in hot sun. Stripes, tie-dye or a solid bright all need nothing else. Chunky white platform sneakers carry you through airport walks and long sightseeing days. A fanny pack worn crossbody, a cap and a single sleeve roll finish it.
22. Kimono Sleeve Top And White Jeans

White jeans brighten anything, and a straight-leg cropped pair with a little stretch is the most wearable. On a trip they're a risk, so I treat them as a dinner and city-day piece, not a beach one. A kimono-sleeve woven blouse in a bold geometric or batik print gives the wide sleeves room to move. Backless loafers or beige mules, a bamboo ring-handle bag, beaded bracelets and a woven visor finish the resort feel.
23. Poplin Midi Skirt And Tied-Front Shirt

A crisp white poplin midi skirt with side buttons or a slit combines structure with a light summer weight. A tied-front chambray shirt over it brings in blue and makes the outfit look planned. The knot defines the midriff without much skin, so it works for family activities. Poplin creases more than knit, so I'd pack it on top and steam it in the bathroom. Braided leather sandals with a cushioned footbed, a rattan circle bag and a bright headband to keep flyaways down complete it.
24. Matching Athleisure Set For Travel Day

Travel days need comfort that still looks fine in airport photos. A soft ribbed knit lounge set in sage, dusty blue or oatmeal, a zip-front jacket with tapered joggers, does that. Underneath, a supportive stretch tank deals with hot terminals and cold planes. I wear the bulkiest shoes and jacket on the plane to save space in the bag. Cushioned white platform sneakers, an oversized nylon tote for tablets and snacks, a baseball cap and small studs finish it.
25. Chambray Dress And Brown Leather Sandals

A chambray shirt dress looks better the more it's worn, and it's two pieces in one: open over shorts as a duster or buttoned and belted as a dress. Roll the sleeves and pop the collar. Chambray hides travel wrinkles better than plain cotton because of its uneven weave. Brown leather strappy sandals with a slight heel and a matching crossbody warm up the blue. A simple pendant and tortoise round sunglasses add a light Western note.
26. Linen Blazer And Tailored Shorts Set

For a resort dinner, an ivory linen-blend blazer with matching tailored shorts sits right between dressy and casual. A champagne satin-finish camisole underneath catches some light. Linen blends with a little viscose or cotton wrinkle less than pure linen, which I'd choose for a suit in a suitcase. Nude toe-ring sandals, a leather envelope clutch, a thin layered necklace and dewy makeup finish it. Ivory looks warm and soft against sunset light.
27. Ruffle Mini Dress With Straw Accessories

A ruffle-trimmed mini in butter yellow or peach brings a cheerful note to a family day. The tiers add movement, and the short hem stays cool. Light ruffles crush in a suitcase, so roll the dress and fluff it out on arrival. A chunky straw wedge and round straw crossbody suit the summer mood, and a silk scarf in a high ponytail or a low bun with a few loose strands softens the finish.
28. Wide-Leg Cropped Pants And Sleeveless Blouse

Cropped wide-leg pants in rayon crepe or light linen fall in a long line and stop above the ankle, so the hem stays dry on wet streets. A sleeveless blouse with a small peter pan collar or a ruffle, tucked in, adds charm. Rust, olive and sand go together without effort. Block-heel clogs or wooden-soled sandals suit the earthy colors, but wooden soles are loud and slippery on stone floors, so I'd choose rubber-tipped ones for museums. A slouchy leather shoulder bag and thin gold hoops finish it.
29. Tiered Cotton Sundress And Ankle-Wrap Sandals

A tiered cotton sundress in a small floral or micro-paisley is one you'll wear several times on one trip. Adjustable spaghetti straps and a smocked back adapt the fit, and the tiers swing as you walk. A small print hides wear and sand better than a large one. Ankle-wrap tan sandals with a low stacked heel stay put on long walks. Layer thin coin necklaces, and tie a light denim jacket at the waist for evening breezes or chilly restaurants.
30. Coordinated Family Photo Outfits In Soft Neutrals

Family photos work best when the palette is soft and connected. Pick three or four neutral shades, such as cream, oatmeal, light taupe and soft blue, and let each person wear a mix of solids and gentle textures in that range: mom in a ribbed knit midi, dad in a linen shirt with khakis, the kids in cotton rompers or shorts sets. Check the outfits together in daylight before the shoot; cream and white side by side can make one look dingy. Neutral sandals, minimal gold jewelry and loose hair keep it relaxed.
Walking Shoes for Parks, Sand and Old Streets
Shoes decide how a family trip feels more than any outfit. A theme park day can easily run past ten miles, and that's not the time to try a new pair. I'd pack three: a broken-in sneaker with cushioning, a sandal with a back strap that stays on in water and sand, and one flat or low-heeled sandal that works at dinner.
Slides and flip-flops are fine by the pool but tire your feet on long walks, because your toes grip to keep them on. Cobblestones are hard on thin soles and narrow heels; a low wedge or a block heel is steadier. Pack small blister plasters in your bag on the first day, not after the first blister.
A Quick Laundry Halfway Through
If you're away for more than five days, plan one wash halfway. Then you can pack for four or five days and rewear the rest. Linen, cotton gauze and quick-dry swim fabrics dry overnight on a hotel balcony or shower rail. Heavier denim and thick knits won't, so wear those on travel days and keep them out of the mid-trip wash.
Pack Less, Rewear More, Enjoy the Trip
A family summer trip doesn't need a huge suitcase. Pick one color palette, pack pieces that each go with at least two others, and choose shoes you've already broken in. With those three decisions made, you can cover pool days, theme parks, dinners and a photo from the same small bag, and spend the trip with your family rather than with your luggage.
