Athletic is one of my favorite builds to dress, because the frame is already strong and balanced. It's often called a rectangle or straight body shape: shoulders, waist and hips sit roughly in line, often with muscle in the shoulders, arms or thighs. I never try to hide that. The aim is a bit of definition at the waist and some softness where you'd like it, using belts, peplums, high waists and structured layers. Spring's sporty pieces, polished athleisure and relaxed tailoring all suit an athletic body well. Below are thirty outfits, from wide-leg trousers to light midi dresses, and I've noted where each one fits muscle and where it fights it.

Which Athletic Build Are You Dressing?
"Athletic" covers more than one shape, and the fix depends on where the muscle sits. Before I suggest a single outfit, I look at which of these is true:
- Strong shoulders and back (swimmers, climbers): keep shoulder details small, use V-necks and wrap fronts, and add volume below with A-lines, flares and wide legs.
- Strong thighs and calves (runners, cyclists, dancers): choose straight or wide legs over skinnies, and skirts that flare from the hip. Put interest on top with ruffles, puff sleeves and brighter colors.
- Straight through the middle with no strong lean either way: belts, peplums, paperbag waists and cropped jackets that end at the waistband all add definition.
Most people are a mix. Pick the one that bothers you most when shopping and solve that first; I've added fit notes for each build in the outfits below.
1. Spring Athletic Build Outfit With A-Line Midi Dress And White Sneakers

A soft A-line midi dress is one of the first things I hand an athletic client. The flare from the waist suggests a curve, and a fitted bodice shows off strong shoulders and arms. Pick lavender or butter yellow in a fabric that skims rather than clings. White sneakers keep it casual for brunch or the market, and a woven crossbody and small gold hoops are all it needs. If your back is broad, check the bodice zip closes without strain across the shoulder blades before anything else.
2. Spring Athletic Build Outfit With High-Waisted Wide-Leg Trousers And Cropped Cardigan

High-waisted wide-leg trousers do two jobs on a straight frame: the waist band marks your middle and the wide leg softens the hip. Lightweight linen or fluid crepe in oatmeal or dove gray moves best. Tuck in a fitted ribbed tank and add a cropped cardigan that stops exactly at the waistband, so the cinch stays visible. Pointed flats and a structured shoulder bag take it from office to dinner. If your thighs are muscular, size the trousers for the thigh and have the waist taken in; that's a quick alteration.
3. Spring Athletic Build Outfit With Belted Trench Coat And Straight-Leg Jeans

A belted trench is one of the strongest shaping tools there is for an athletic body. Tie it and you have a waist, even on a straight frame. Wear it over a white tee and medium-wash straight jeans that sit high on the hip. Cuff the jeans once and add leopard ballet flats, oversized sunglasses and a leather tote. Broad shoulders can make a trench pull across the back, so I size for the shoulder and use the belt to bring in the extra room at the waist.
4. Spring Athletic Build Outfit With Wrap Dress And Block Heel Sandals

Wrap dresses have suited athletic builds for decades, because you tie the waist exactly where you want it. The V-neck pulls the eye up and shows off the collarbones. A midi wrap in a cheerful floral with a contrast border does all the work. Neutral block-heel sandals add height without wobble, and a fine chain and slim clutch finish it for a spring shower or garden party. A true wrap gives more shaping than a faux wrap with a fixed seam, since you can tighten it to your own waist.
5. Spring Athletic Build Outfit With Peplum Top And Skinny Ankle Jeans

A peplum top could have been designed for a straight figure. The flared hem adds width at the hip, and the fitted bodice shows a toned middle. I like a sleeveless peplum in coral or cobalt with dark-wash skinny ankle jeans, nude strappy sandals and a compact top-handle bag. The detail I check is where the peplum starts: it should flare from your natural waist, not from below it, or it lands on the hip and widens instead of shaping.
6. Spring Athletic Build Outfit With Matching Athleisure Set And Denim Jacket

A matching athleisure set in sage or dusty blue looks put together with almost no effort. The fitted zip jacket and high-waisted leggings follow your shape, and one color top to bottom makes a long line. A slightly oversized denim jacket on top adds structure. White crew socks and chunky sneakers finish it for travel days or school drop-off. Thick, matte leggings look intentional; thin, shiny ones read as gym clothes, so I'd always choose the heavier fabric for wearing out.
7. Spring Athletic Build Outfit With Slip Skirt And Oversized Knit Sweater

A fluid satin slip skirt with a chunky oversized knit is my favorite spring contrast. The bias cut slides over the hips and swings when you walk, while the sweater brings texture. Tuck just the front so there's a hint of a waist. Choose a champagne or blush midi with a tonal knit, then add heeled mules and a fine chain. Satin shows every line underneath and clings to muscular thighs, so a slip or smooth shorts beneath it keep the drape clean.
8. Spring Athletic Build Outfit With Utility Jumpsuit And Canvas Sneakers

A utility jumpsuit in soft cotton twill is a one-step outfit, and it suits an athletic body once you belt it. Look for a self-tie or D-ring belt, a slightly tapered leg and roll-tab sleeves. Olive or khaki looks fresh. Unzip the collar enough to show a white tank, then add white or cream canvas sneakers and a backpack. Jumpsuits are sized by torso length as well as width, so sit down in the fitting room: if it pulls at the crotch when you sit, it's too short in the body.
9. Spring Athletic Build Outfit With Ruffled Blouse And Tailored Trousers

A ruffled blouse adds soft volume through the chest and shoulders, which balances a straight build when the bottoms stay sleek. Choose ivory or pale pink with ruffles down the front and tuck it fully into high-waisted tailored trousers. Pointed pumps lengthen the line, and a structured satchel finishes it for a work meeting that turns into drinks. If your shoulders are already broad, I'd keep ruffles down the center and skip any that sit on the shoulder line.
10. Spring Athletic Build Outfit With Track Pants And Cropped Hoodie

Track pants left the gym a while ago. For an athletic frame, choose a tapered leg with an elastic ankle so your shape still shows. A cropped hoodie that ends just above the hip bone marks your waist without bulk. Keep it tonal, cream on cream or gray and white, with clean court sneakers and a cap. If your calves are muscular, check the ankle cuff isn't tight, because a cuff that grips makes the leg look shorter.
11. Spring Athletic Build Outfit With Boho Maxi Dress And Flat Sandals

A boho maxi dress with a smocked or tied waist gives a straight frame instant definition. Look for light cotton or rayon in an earthy print, terracotta, mustard and cream. The flowing skirt adds softness, and a V or square neckline frames the shoulders well. Flat tan sandals, beaded bracelets and a wide-brim hat finish it for markets or a garden walk. Smocking stretches, so it fits a wide range of waists, which makes these dresses easier to buy online than most.
12. Spring Athletic Build Outfit With Straight-Leg Trousers And A Structured Blazer

A well-cut blazer transforms an athletic build: it squares the shoulders and a single button brings in the waist. Choose a light spring blazer in pastel pink, ivory or pale gray over a silk camisole tucked into straight trousers. Low block-heel loafers, a slim belt that matches them and a structured crossbody keep it office-ready. Muscular arms often fill blazer sleeves before the body fits, so I always have clients bend their elbow and reach forward; if the sleeve binds, go up a size and take in the waist.
13. Spring Athletic Build Outfit With High-Waisted Paperbag Shorts And Knit Tank

Paperbag-waist shorts do a lot of shaping on a straight frame: the gathered waist and tie belt create curves instantly. A linen blend in sand or rust with a fitted ribbed tank tucked in keeps the top slim against the slightly wide leg. Espadrille wedges, a woven tote and layered gold chains finish it for brunch or a beach walk. Strong thighs fill a short fast, so I look for a leg opening with a little flare rather than a straight cut.
14. Spring Athletic Build Outfit With Belted Shirt Dress And Knee-High Boots

A belted shirt dress sits right between casual and polished for early spring. The collar and button front lengthen the torso, and the belt pulls in the waist. Striped cotton or soft chambray both work. Roll the sleeves to below the elbow and add tan or cognac knee-high boots, a leather satchel and slim sunglasses. Tall boots need room at the calf; many athletic women find standard widths tight, so wide-calf versions are worth trying even if you're slim elsewhere.
15. Spring Athletic Build Outfit With V-Neck Bodysuit And Flared Jeans

A V-neck bodysuit draws a long line down the torso and shows off a strong upper body. Tuck it into high-waisted flares, which add movement at the calf and balance wider shoulders. Choose emerald or sapphire with medium-wash raw-hem jeans, then add platform sneakers or a chunky low heel. A thin belt with a small gold buckle and a crescent bag finish it. Bodysuits stay flat under jeans, which is why I prefer them to a tucked tee on someone without much natural waist.
16. Spring Athletic Build Outfit With Knit Midi Skirt And Fitted Turtleneck

A ribbed knit midi that skims the body with a fitted turtleneck makes a sleek, quiet outfit. It follows your natural shape, and the midi length adds polish. A camel or taupe skirt with a cream turtleneck, pointed mules in a matching tone, a long pendant and a structured bag work well for dinner or a gallery. Knit skirts can cling at the seat, so I choose a thicker rib with some weight; it skims muscle rather than outlining it.
17. Spring Athletic Build Outfit With Cropped Wide-Leg Pants And A Button-Down Shirt

Cropped wide-leg pants that end just above the ankle feel very current, and on an athletic frame the high waist and wide leg form a soft A below the belt. Tuck in a crisp white button-down with loosely rolled sleeves. A slim belt, woven leather slides, a canvas tote and studs keep it clean. The crop has to clear the ankle bone, or it looks like trousers that shrank. I measure from the floor with the shoes on before hemming.
18. Spring Athletic Build Outfit With Puff-Sleeve Top And Straight-Leg Cropped Jeans

Puff sleeves add a bit of volume at the shoulder and soften an angular frame. Look for a square or sweetheart neckline to show the collarbones, in a spring floral or soft pastel. Tuck it into straight cropped raw-hem jeans. Ankle-strap block heels and a small bucket bag finish it for a picnic or patio lunch. If your shoulders are already broad, choose a small puff that sits just below the shoulder seam; a large puff right on top adds more width than you want.
19. Spring Athletic Build Outfit With Sweater Vest And Pleated Midi Skirt

A sweater vest works well on an athletic build, layered over a crisp collared shirt or a slim long-sleeve tee. It adds texture on top and frames the torso. A pleated midi below adds movement. Tonal pairings look best: a cream vest with a blush skirt, for example. Chunky loafers with white ankle socks and a mini shoulder bag finish the preppy look. The vest should end at the natural waist or the skirt's waistband; longer vests hide the one bit of shaping you've got.
20. Spring Athletic Build Outfit With Bomber Jacket And Biker Shorts

This sporty, street-style look plays straight to an athletic build's strengths. A light satin bomber in lilac or mint adds a little shoulder puff, and fitted black biker shorts show strong legs. Layer it over a cropped white tank. Pull white crew socks up the calf and add chunky retro sneakers, a cap and a crossbody belt bag. I'd suggest a slightly longer biker short, mid-thigh rather than high, if you'd prefer it not to ride up when you walk.
21. Spring Athletic Build Outfit With Belted Jumpsuit And Heeled Mules

A belted jumpsuit in a fluid fabric does a lot for an athletic figure: the V-neck lengthens, the belt adds a waist, and the wide legs move nicely. Choose rust, navy or olive and let the belt lead. Roll the sleeves slightly and add neutral heeled mules, a sleek clutch and drop earrings to dress it up for a wedding or a shower. A drapey crepe or viscose hangs better on muscle than a stiff cotton, which tends to stand away from the body and add bulk.
22. Spring Athletic Build Outfit With Classic Cardigan And A-Line Mini Skirt

An A-line mini with a fitted cardigan flatters an athletic build by marking the waist and adding volume below. Choose a spring tweed or cotton blend with a gentle flare and a fine-gauge cardigan tucked at the front. Pastel ballet flats keep it cohesive, and a thin headband and small top-handle bag finish it for a brunch or daytime event. With strong thighs, I'd look for a mini with a bit more flare at the hem, so it moves away from the leg.
23. Spring Athletic Build Outfit With Chambray Shirt And White Wide-Leg Pants

Soft chambray half-tucked into crisp white wide-leg pants feels light and easy. The pale shirt softens the upper body and the high-waisted pants give length. Roll the sleeves to the elbow, add a woven belt with a tortoiseshell buckle and wear espadrille sneakers or flat sandals. A straw hat and canvas tote make it seaside wear. Check that the white pants are thick enough not to show pocket linings in bright sun.
24. Spring Athletic Build Outfit With Cropped Trench Jacket And Midi Slip Dress

A cropped trench stops right at the waist, so it marks the middle and adds structure at the shoulder. Wear it over a soft satin midi slip dress, champagne under beige. The bias-cut dress slides over the body, and the jacket's short length draws a clear waistline. Heeled sandals and a clutch take it to dinner. A cropped jacket can shorten a long torso; if yours is short-waisted, I'd move to a jacket that ends just below the waist instead.
25. Spring Athletic Build Outfit With Graphic Sweatshirt And Pleated Tennis Skirt

Playful and practical. A relaxed graphic sweatshirt tucked loosely into a white pleated tennis skirt puts volume on top and flare below. The skirt's high waist marks the middle, and the pleats move. White crew socks, court sneakers, a crossbody phone bag and a low ponytail finish it for campus days. A loose front tuck works better than a full one with a thick sweatshirt, which otherwise bunches at the waistband.
26. Spring Athletic Build Outfit With Belted Wide-Leg Culottes And A Tank

Culottes give you the ease of a skirt with the structure of trousers, which suits athletic bodies. A high-waisted pair with a self-belt cinches the waist, and the wide cropped leg adds softness. Choose spring green or creamy beige with a ribbed tank tucked in, then add strappy flat sandals, a long pendant and a roomy tote. Culottes with muscular calves look best when the hem hits below the widest part of the calf, not right on it.
27. Spring Athletic Build Outfit With Denim Maxi Skirt And Cropped Tank

A front-slit denim maxi is current and flatters a straight shape: the high waist and slight A-line create a curve, and the slit shows a little leg. Pair it with a cropped tank in white or a bright solid, and layer an open-knit cardigan on breezy days. Flat platform sandals add height, and beaded necklaces add personality. Denim maxis are heavy, so a front or side slit isn't only for looks; it's what lets you take a full stride on stairs.
28. Spring Athletic Build Outfit With Pinstripe Vest And Matching Trousers

A tailored pinstripe vest with matching wide-leg trousers is a sharp, modern suit. The vest nips in the waist on a straight torso, and the trousers lengthen the leg. Wear the vest buttoned over a bralette for evening, or over a white tee for more coverage. Pointed pumps and a sleek leather clutch dress it up for dinners or networking. Vests gape between buttons across a muscular chest, so I check the button line with arms forward before buying.
29. Spring Athletic Build Outfit With Seersucker Shorts Set And Canvas Sneakers

A blue-and-white seersucker shorts set is crisp and very spring. The puckered fabric adds texture that softens angular lines, and the button top can be tucked or tied to draw attention to the waist. Shorts that end mid-thigh keep the proportions balanced. White canvas sneakers and a woven tote finish it for a picnic or a boat day. Seersucker barely needs ironing, which makes it one of the easiest fabrics I know for travel.
30. Spring Athletic Build Outfit With Tie-Waist Trench Dress And Ankle-Strap Heels

A tie-waist trench dress mixes the structure of a coat with the ease of a dress. The double-breasted front and notch collar frame the shoulders, and the belt sets the waist exactly where you want it. Khaki or soft beige never dates. Tan ankle-strap heels, a gold cuff and a structured top-handle bag keep it minimal, from a workday into the evening. Double-breasted fronts add width at the chest, so if your upper body is broad, I'd tie the belt firmly and leave the top button open to break up the front.
Buying for Muscle and Tailoring the Rest
Off-the-rack sizing assumes that a bigger thigh, arm or back comes with a bigger waist. On an athletic body it often doesn't, which is why trousers gape at the back waistband and blazers fit the arm but hang loose at the middle.
My rule is to buy for the largest muscle and alter for the rest. Trousers that fit the thigh can have the waist taken in, which is usually a simple and affordable job. Blazers that fit the shoulders and upper arm can be suppressed at the waist. Going the other way, letting out a too-tight thigh or shoulder, rarely works because there's seldom enough fabric in the seams.
- Look for 2 to 3 percent elastane in trousers and jeans; it gives enough room for strong legs without going baggy at the knee.
- Contour or curvy fits, cut with a smaller waist relative to the hip, are worth trying even on a straight frame with strong thighs.
- In the fitting room, sit, squat and reach forward. Seams that strain when you move will split long before the fabric wears out.
Fabric choice matters as much as size. Stiff denim and heavy cotton twill stand away from muscle and add bulk, while crepe, viscose and jersey with some weight follow the body without clinging. For spring tops, I steer athletic clients toward cotton modal and fine knits that drape over the shoulders instead of squaring them off even further. If a piece fits everywhere except one spot, that is usually a tailor's job rather than a reason to put it back.
Belt It, Soften It, Then Leave the Shoulders Alone
Dressing an athletic frame for spring comes down to three habits: mark the waist, add softness where you'd like a curve, and keep the proportions balanced on purpose. Sporty pieces feel natural on this build, but wrap dresses and slip skirts suit it just as well when they're cut to fit muscle. High waists, belts and simple layers will do most of the work. My advice is to start with the one piece most likely to change how you see your shape, usually a belted trench or a true wrap dress, and build outward from there.
