Most of the plus-size clients I dress tell me skirts are the hardest thing to shop for, and the reason is usually the waistband, not their body. Finding skirts that celebrate curves instead of hiding them starts with where the skirt sits, what it's made of and what goes on top. I've built each of the 30 outfits below from top to shoes, so you can copy one exactly or lift a single idea from it. They range from denim and satin to pleats and leather, and I've added what I check in the fitting room for each one, because the same skirt can look great or wrong depending on half an inch of rise.

Sizing a Skirt When Your Waist and Hips Disagree
Most plus-size skirts fit badly in one of two places: they close at the waist and pull across the hip, or they fit the hip and gape at the back of the waist. Size charts can't solve that, because they assume one ratio between the two. I measure both before shopping and buy to the larger measurement, then adjust the smaller one.
- Fit the hip first in pencil and straight skirts. Taking in a waistband is a simple alteration; letting out a hip seam usually isn't possible.
- A-line, pleated and tiered skirts give you more room at the hip, so fitting the waist matters more there.
- Elastic or partly elastic waistbands are more comfortable when sitting all day, but wide elastic stays flat while thin elastic rolls.
- Sit down in the fitting room. If the waistband digs in seated, it will bother you by lunch.
- High-waisted skirts should sit at the narrowest point of your torso. On many apple-shaped bodies that's just under the bust, not at the belly button.
1. Plus size graphic tee with high-waisted denim mini skirt

A faded band tee loosely tucked into a light-wash high-waisted denim mini is my go-to for a client who says she 'can't do minis'. The A-line cut is what makes it work: it skims the hips and stands slightly away from the thigh, so it doesn't ride up into creases the way a straight denim mini does. Tuck only the front of the tee, and let the back hang, to mark the waist without a bulge at the hip. White canvas sneakers, hoops and a neutral crossbody are all it needs for errands or a casual lunch.
2. Plus size pencil skirt and button-up shirt outfit

A white button-up tucked into a black ponte pencil skirt is the workwear pairing I trust most on curvy bodies. Ponte is a thick double knit, so it holds you in without the seams straining like a woven pencil skirt can. With button-ups, the issue is always the bust: if the placket gapes between buttons, size up and have the waist taken in, or look for a hidden snap. Black pointed pumps, a slim leather belt and a structured tote finish it for interviews or presentations.
3. Plus size pleated midi skirt with turtleneck

A cream ribbed turtleneck with a rust pleated midi is a warm-weather-to-cold transition outfit I like a lot. Ribbed knit clings without bulk, so it balances the volume of the pleats, which swing as you walk rather than standing out at the hip. I check one thing before buying: are the pleats stitched down a few inches from the waist? If not, they open over the stomach. Brown ankle boots with a low block heel and a long wool coat carry it into colder days. It's good for a museum visit or a casual Friday.
4. Plus size faux leather midi skirt with bodysuit

A black faux leather A-line midi with a scoop-neck black bodysuit is an easy all-black evening outfit. The bodysuit matters here: a regular tee would bunch under a stiff faux leather waistband, while a bodysuit lies flat. Faux leather doesn't breathe, so I'd avoid it on a hot summer night. Strappy block-heel sandals keep it walkable, and a metallic clutch and gold or silver earrings bring some light into an all-matte look. It suits a dinner or a rooftop drink.
5. Plus size denim maxi skirt with cropped hoodie

A washed-black denim maxi with a front slit and a boxy gray cropped hoodie is my weekend uniform suggestion for busy days. Denim maxis are heavy, so the slit isn't just for looks; it's what lets you take a full stride or climb stairs. A cropped hoodie leaves a small sliver of waist above the skirt, and if you'd rather not show skin, a fitted tank underneath covers the gap. Chunky platform sneakers and a few gold chains finish it for school pick-up or travel.
6. Plus size floral maxi skirt with linen blouse

A white linen blouse tied at the waist over a pink and green floral maxi is spring in one outfit. Linen breathes on hot days, but it creases the minute you sit down, so if that bothers you, look for a linen-cotton blend that wrinkles less. The tie front is useful on a fuller bust because you control where the waist lands. The skirt's A-line skims the hips rather than gripping them. Flat tan sandals, a straw tote and sunglasses are all it needs for a market or a garden party.
7. Plus size satin slip skirt with oversized blazer

A champagne satin bias-cut midi with a fitted white tank and an oversized beige blazer is the smart-casual outfit I reach for most. Bias-cut satin drapes and moves, but it's unforgiving with underwear lines, so I always pair it with smooth shapewear shorts or a slip. The blazer should be long enough to cover the hip, which gives you a long vertical line from shoulder to thigh. Nude pointed flats keep your leg line going without a heel. It moves from a work meeting to drinks without a change.
8. Plus size velvet maxi skirt with cable-knit sweater

Emerald velvet with a chunky cream cable-knit sweater is all texture, and it's a pairing I save for holiday dinners. Velvet crushes where you sit, so steam it before you go and hang it rather than folding it. The chunky knit adds bulk, which is why I tuck only the front into the waistband; a full tuck would add width at the stomach. Brown knee-high boots with a stacked heel go under the long hem, and a gold pendant picks up the warm tones.
9. Plus size tulle midi skirt with tucked-in blouse

A blush tulle midi skirt with layers of soft netting and a tucked-in ruffle blouse is my pick for a daytime wedding or a bridal shower. Tulle looks voluminous but weighs almost nothing, and because the outer layers are semi-sheer, they float away from the body instead of adding visual width. Check that the waistband is wide and covered; narrow elastic under tulle can roll. Nude block-heel sandals, pearl drop earrings and a small metallic clutch keep it dressy.
10. Plus size tiered maxi skirt with cropped wrap top

A tiered chambray maxi in a soft blue wash with a cropped white eyelet wrap top is the summer outfit I'd pack for a beach town. The tiers should start below the hip, not right at the waist, or the first ruffle sits exactly where you least want extra fabric. The wrap top adjusts to the bust and waist, which is why it fits more bodies than a cropped tee. Cotton and chambray both breathe in heat. Braided sandals with a cushioned footbed, a wide-brim hat and a rattan bag finish it.
11. Plus size botanical print skirt with off-shoulder top

A navy maxi covered in oversized tropical leaves with a yellow off-shoulder top is bold, and it works because the solid top breaks up the print. Large prints are actually easier on a fuller figure than tiny busy ones, because the scale matches the body. The smocked waistband stretches with you, but check that the smocking is dense; thin smocking can sag by the end of the day. Brown platform espadrilles, bamboo hoops and a woven tote set it up for resort evenings or tropical getaways.
12. Plus size distressed denim mini skirt with band tee

A light-blue distressed denim mini with a raw hem and a black band tee knotted at the waist is the outfit for a concert or a casual hangout. The knot sets the waistline exactly where you choose. A little stretch in the denim is worth looking for, because rigid denim minis ride up when you sit. Raw hems keep fraying with every wash, so trim loose threads rather than pulling them. Black high-tops ground the pale denim, and a denim jacket tied at the waist adds a layer.
13. Plus size polka dot midi skirt with turtleneck

A black-and-white polka dot midi with a fitted black turtleneck is a classic I've never seen fail. Medium dots read better than tiny ones, which blur into gray from a distance. The midi length is the part I fuss over: the hem should land below the widest point of your calf, not right on it, so measure with the shoes you'll wear. Black pointed slingback kitten heels, pearl studs and a red lip give it a retro note for office hours or after-work drinks.
14. Plus size navy A-line midi skirt with striped shirt

A navy A-line midi in a cotton blend with a blue-and-white striped shirt is coastal and relaxed. The flare starts just below the natural waist and smooths over the stomach and hips. I always tell clients to roll the shirt sleeves to just below the elbow, which shows the narrowest part of the arm. Vertical stripes draw the eye up and down, but if your stripes are wide and horizontal, tuck the shirt fully so they don't sit across the hip. Tan slides and a woven crossbody finish it for weekend brunch.
15. Plus size citrus print maxi skirt with one-shoulder top

A lemon-and-orange print maxi with a royal-blue one-shoulder top is a party outfit for summer. Bold print on the bottom half works when the top is solid and strong enough to hold its own, and royal blue is exactly that. The one-shoulder neckline frames the collarbone, but check the strap width: a thin strap on a fuller bust digs in, so look for a wide one or a built-in bra. Flat gold sandals keep you comfortable, and a beaded clutch and big hoops add flair.
16. Plus size monochrome pencil skirt with mock-neck tee

A charcoal ponte pencil skirt with a matching mock‑neck short‑sleeve tee turns a one-color outfit into something sharp. A single color from neck to knee removes the break at the waist, so the eye reads one long line. The tee should be a thicker knit; thin jersey shows every bump of the waistband underneath. Black pointed slingbacks with gold hardware and a slim gold-buckle belt add polish. It's dressy enough for the office and for an evening event.
17. Plus size plaid mini skirt with chunky knit sweater

A red-and-black plaid mini with an oversized charcoal chunky knit is preppy and warm. Black opaque tights are what make a mini wearable in fall, and I'd buy plus-size tights with a wide waistband so they don't roll down under the skirt. Lace-up combat boots cover the calf and balance the volume of the sweater. A beanie and a leather backpack finish it. This one I'd wear to a pumpkin patch, since boots and tights handle mud better than bare legs.
18. Plus size wrap blouse with high-waisted denim maxi skirt

A burgundy puff-sleeve wrap blouse tucked into a dark denim maxi with a front slit is romantic but grounded. The wrap cinches the waist naturally, and puff sleeves add volume at the shoulder, which balances fuller hips. If your upper arms are something you'd rather not emphasize, choose a sleeve where the puff sits at the shoulder, not the elbow. Brown suede wedge espadrilles echo the warm tones, though suede wedges should stay home on rainy days. It suits dinner or a daytime event.
19. Plus size tiered ruffle maxi skirt with fitted tank

A white tiered-ruffle maxi in light cotton with a fitted black tank is sharp contrast in two pieces. White cotton is often sheer, so hold the skirt up to the light in the store; if you can see your hand, it needs a slip. The ruffled tiers add movement without bulk at the waist because the volume starts lower down. Flat black sandals with thin straps and a long pendant keep it minimal. It's a summer outfit with full leg coverage and plenty of airflow.
20. Plus size pleated satin midi skirt with belted blazer

A rose-pink pleated satin midi with a black button-down and a belted black blazer is the outfit I'd suggest for a presentation. The structure of the blazer offsets the fluid pleats, and the belt marks the waist without you having to tuck a heavy shirt. Satin pleats can lose their press after washing, so dry-clean or hand-wash and hang immediately. Black pointed kitten heels, a leather satchel and pearl studs keep it professional.
21. Plus size knit midi skirt co-ord with cropped sweater

A tomato-red ribbed knit midi with its matching cropped sweater is a co-ord set that's as comfortable as loungewear. Ribbing runs vertically on both pieces, so the eye travels straight down. Knit skirts can cling and show lines, so I'd look for a heavier, denser rib and wear smooth underwear. Cognac suede knee boots add a warm contrast at the bottom. Wearing one unbroken color is one of the easiest tricks for looking taller and more streamlined on a curvier figure.
22. Plus size solid maxi skirt with patterned blouse

A chocolate-brown crepe maxi with a cream-and-rust floral blouse puts the print up top and the solid color below. That's a placement I use often: a small print near the face draws the eye up, while the dark skirt grounds everything. Crepe has a matte, slightly grainy texture that drapes well and resists wrinkles better than linen. Tan woven wedges, a brown leather belt and a bracelet stack finish an outfit for a family dinner or a weekend away.
23. Plus size a-line midi skirt with lace blouse

A blush A-line midi in a soft woven fabric with a high-neck cream lace blouse is one of the most feminine outfits on the list. A high neckline on a full bust can make the chest look like one block, so I'd pick lace with a slightly sheer yoke or a keyhole to break it up. The A-line defines the waist and skims the hips. Nude pointed ballet flats and a pearl-trimmed clutch suit a bridal shower or afternoon tea.
24. Plus size pleated mini skirt with crop top and sneakers

A lavender pleated mini with a white cropped graphic sweatshirt is sporty and fun. The trick is getting the sweatshirt's hem to land right at the skirt's high waistband, so only a sliver of skin shows when you move. Cropped sweatshirts often come cut for straight bodies, so check that the hem doesn't flare out over the bust. White platform dad sneakers with crew socks pulled up add the retro feel, and tinted sunglasses and a metallic mini bag finish it.
25. Plus size white tiered midi skirt with denim jacket

A white tiered cotton midi with a tucked-in gray tank and a denim jacket over the shoulders is the easiest spring outfit here. It handles changing weather well: take the jacket off in the sun, put it on when the wind picks up. A cropped jacket that ends at the waist keeps the waist visible; a longer one cuts you at the widest point of the hip. White leather sneakers and a canvas tote keep it casual. Check the white cotton for sheerness the same way you would a white maxi.
26. Plus size floral midi skirt with long cardigan

A navy floral midi with a cream shell and a long oatmeal cardigan is a layered look for cooler days. A long open cardigan creates two vertical lines down the front of the body, which is one of the oldest tricks in plus-size styling, and it works. Choose one that falls to at least mid-thigh. Nude block-heel sandals and a structured beige bag keep it polished for the office or a gallery afternoon. Small gold hoops are enough jewelry with the print.
27. Plus size suede a-line skirt with peasant blouse

A camel suede A-line mini with a cream embroidered peasant blouse is 1970s boho. Real suede marks easily and darkens in rain, so I'd keep it for dry days and brush it with a suede brush after wearing. Faux suede is easier to care for and often stretches a little more. The loose blouse balances the short skirt, and tan knee-high boots with a block heel keep the leg covered and warm. Beaded necklaces and a fringed crossbody finish it for a fall festival.
28. Plus size denim midi skirt with puff-sleeve blouse

A medium-wash denim midi with a front slit and a black puff-sleeve blouse is how I take denim to dinner. The slit should start no higher than mid-thigh; any higher and it opens too much when you sit. Puff sleeves give the shoulders some drama, while the structured denim holds its shape from waist to hem. Black strappy heeled sandals, a black clutch and silver statement earrings are what turn it from casual to cocktail.
29. Plus size leather pencil skirt with tweed blazer

A black stretch-leather pencil skirt just below the knee with a cropped black-and-white tweed blazer looks expensive. A white silk shell underneath keeps attention on the textures. I always check the back vent or slit on a leather pencil skirt; without one, a knee-length hem limits your stride to small steps. The cropped blazer ends at the waist and shows it off rather than hiding it. Black pumps, a quilted chain bag and pearl studs suit a formal dinner or an important meeting.
30. Plus size satin midi skirt with ribbed mock-neck

A navy satin bias-cut midi with a fitted camel ribbed mock-neck sweater takes two minutes to put on and looks polished. The shine of the satin against the matte knit gives you contrast without any print. Static is the one problem: satin clings to tights and knits in dry winter air, so a quick spray of anti-static or a slip underneath helps. Tan block-heel sandals, a camel shoulder bag and a thin gold chain keep it neutral for a date night or a holiday party.
Stopping Thigh Chafe Under Dresses and Skirts
It's the question I get most from clients who've stopped wearing skirts: what about thigh chafing? Skin rubbing on skin in summer heat can leave a painful rash after a long walk, and it's the real reason many people stay in jeans. It's easy to fix.
- Thin slip shorts or bike shorts under a midi or maxi are the most reliable fix. Look for a flat, wide waistband and a grippy leg hem so they don't ride up.
- Anti-chafe bands that sit around the upper thigh work under short skirts where shorts would show.
- Anti-chafing balms and sticks work for a few hours; reapply if you're out all day.
- Breathable fabrics like cotton and linen keep skin drier than polyester, which traps sweat.
How Slips, Shapewear and Linings Change a Skirt
Half the skirts above, the satin, the white cotton, the lace, the knits, need something underneath to look right. Satin and knits show every line, white cotton turns sheer in daylight, and lace and linen can scratch or catch on skin. A half-slip in a shade close to your skin solves most of it, and it also keeps satin from sticking to your legs.
Shapewear is a choice, not a rule. I suggest light shaping shorts under bias-cut satin and thin knits because they smooth the line, but under denim, tulle or pleats, you rarely need any. If shapewear makes you uncomfortable after an hour, the skirt is the wrong fabric for you, not the wrong size. A lined skirt also hangs better and lasts longer, so it's worth checking the label for one before buying.
Start With the Skirt That Already Fits Your Waist
Good plus size skirt outfits come down to three things I check on every client: where the waist sits, how the proportions balance top to bottom, and whether the fabric moves with you. Pencil skirts, floaty maxis, leather and knit co-ords all have a place, and the right one depends on your week as much as your shape. Start with the outfit closest to what you already own, try it on with the shoes you'd really wear, and adjust from there.
