Pilates is slow and precise, and that changes what you should wear for it. Clothes have to stay put through roll-ups and long holds, and they have to let the instructor see your spine and hips, because form is the whole point of the class. This spring the studio look has gone softer: muted colors, ballet-style shapes, ribbed knits and matching sets. Below are thirty full outfits for reformer classes, mat sessions at home and the coffee afterwards, with notes on what each piece does once you're actually moving.

Reformer Classes Ask More of Your Clothes Than Mat Work
On a mat, almost any fitted activewear works. A reformer is different: it has springs, ropes or straps, a sliding carriage and a foot bar, and loose fabric can catch on any of them. Before I suggest an outfit for a reformer class, I check four things.
- No loose hems: wide flares, wrap skirts and long flowy tops can tangle in the straps or slip under the carriage.
- No hard hardware on the back: zips, metal clasps and buttons press into your spine and can scuff the upholstery.
- Grip socks: most studios ask for them on the reformer, so pack a pair even if you train barefoot at home.
- Slip-resistant fabric on the arms: very shiny sleeves slide on the straps, while a matte finish gives a steadier hold.
Mat classes are more forgiving, which is why I mark a few of the looser outfits below as mat-only. If you're new and not sure which class you've booked, wear fitted leggings and a fitted top. They work for both.
1. High-Waist Leggings with Fitted Tank Pilates Outfit

This is the pairing I'd buy first if someone were starting Pilates tomorrow. Sculpting high-waist leggings hold the midsection steady through core work, and a fitted tank tucked into the waistband gives the instructor a clear line to read your alignment. Choose a soft, moisture-wicking fabric with light compression; if the waistband leaves a red mark after an hour, it's too tight for lying on your back. A ribbed tank adds texture without bulk. Taupe, cream or soft gray, grip socks and a low ponytail, and you're set.
2. Matching Ribbed Set Pilates Outfit

A matching ribbed set is the fastest way to look finished before you've had coffee. The ribbing adds texture that flat activewear lacks, and it shapes the body gently without the squeeze of heavy compression, which suits slow classes where comfort beats control. A cropped long-sleeve top and high-rise leggings in one tonal shade, oatmeal, sage or dusty blue, keep the look calm. Ribbed knits do show sweat lines along the ribs, so I'd choose the paler shades for gentle classes and something deeper for a sweaty one. A light knit over the shoulders covers you before and after.
3. Flowy Top with Slim Leggings Pilates Outfit

Not everyone wants to be in second-skin fabric for an hour. A slightly loose top over slim leggings gives a softer outline and still looks planned, because the fitted legs anchor everything. It suits at-home mat sessions, restorative classes or days you want more coverage at the middle. The catch: a flowy hem falls toward your face in any inverted move, so I'd pick one that ends at the hip with a little weight to it, or tuck one side in. Modal or bamboo blends breathe well, in ivory, stone or warm beige.
4. Neutral Biker Shorts Set Pilates Outfit

Biker shorts are still a studio regular, and this year the palette has moved toward beige, taupe, sand and cream instead of neon. A matching shorts set looks clean and keeps you cool in heated or faster classes, with the shorter leg giving full knee movement. Pair it with a longline sports bra or a cropped tank that matches exactly. Pale colors are the ones most likely to turn see-through when stretched, so I always check a light pair by bending forward in front of a mirror in good daylight before wearing it to class. Ankle socks and white trainers take it out the door after.
5. Longline Sports Bra with Leggings Pilates Outfit

A longline sports bra extends a few inches below the bust, which gives more coverage and a neater line than a short crop. With high-rise leggings it leaves only a small gap at the waist, so you feel covered without hiding your form from the instructor. A scoop neck, cross-back straps or a soft V-front add interest. I check that the bottom band stays flat during a roll-up; cheaper longlines curl up at the hem when you curve your spine. Tonal sculpting leggings and a light zip jacket tied at the waist for warm-up finish it.
6. Wrap Top with Flare Leggings Pilates Outfit

A wrap top brings a ballet touch to the studio. The crossover front gives a good neckline and some shape with no zips or hardware to press into you during floorwork. With flared leggings, it has an early-2000s yoga feel, and the flare balances the fitted torso. One practical note: true wrap tops can loosen during twists, so I look for one with an inner tie or a faux-wrap that's stitched closed. Soft pastels or muted neutrals lean into the Pilates princess vibe. A low bun and small studs finish it.
7. Cropped Hoodie with High-Waist Leggings Pilates Outfit

A cropped hoodie adds warmth without the bulk of a full sweatshirt, and the short cut meets high-rise leggings at the waist. It's the one I'd wear to an early class or a cold studio. Choose light French terry or brushed fleece so it comes off easily once you warm up; the hood itself is a nuisance lying down, so this is a layer for arriving and leaving, not for the mat. Heather gray, charcoal or mushroom brown keep it grounded. Wear a plain sports bra or fitted crop underneath so you look finished once the hoodie is off.
8. One-Piece Pilates Bodysuit Outfit

A one-piece bodysuit or unitard ends the usual problem of a top riding up and a waistband rolling down during roll-ups and inversions. Look for a square or scoop neck, a built-in shelf bra and plenty of four-way stretch. The one fit check I insist on is torso length: a one-piece that's short in the body pulls down on the shoulders the moment you curl forward. Ribbed finishes add interest, and a keyhole or low back keeps it modern. Add a cropped quarter-zip for the walk in, grip socks and a claw clip.
9. Monochrome Matching Pilates Set

A head-to-toe single color looks polished with no effort at all. Instead of black, try mocha, olive, slate blue or dusty mauve. One shade from shoulder to ankle makes a long, unbroken line, and a set means no deciding in the morning. Pick high-waist leggings with a matching long-sleeve crop or wrap top in the exact same shade. Buy both pieces together, though, because dye lots vary and two pieces from different batches can look slightly off next to each other. Stretchy, breathable fabric with light compression and white or neutral slip-on trainers finish it.
10. Off-Shoulder Sweats with Leggings Pilates Outfit

An off-shoulder sweatshirt is a soft, slightly romantic cover-up for before and after class. The wide neckline shows a little collarbone and sits off one shoulder in a relaxed way. Wear a plain sports bra or fitted tank underneath, since this layer comes off once the work starts; a sweatshirt sliding around your shoulders is a distraction during arm work. High-waist leggings in a matching neutral and white sneakers finish a look that goes straight from studio to street. It's especially good on cool mornings.
11. Cross-Back Top with Leggings Pilates Outfit

Cross-back tops suit Pilates better than most styles because the twisted or crossed straps have no clasps or hardware, so lying on your back stays comfortable. The open back also lets heat escape, and the straps keep the top from sliding during bends. Pair it with smooth high-waist leggings in a complementary neutral or earthy shade. I'd check that the straps sit inside the shoulder blades, since wide-set straps slip off during arm circles. A fine chain, a slicked-back low bun and grip socks finish it.
12. Balletcore Pilates Outfit Set

Balletcore keeps showing up in the studio, mixing dancewear lines with modern activewear. A wrap bodysuit or leotard-style top in dusty pink, butter yellow or lilac sets the tone, with stirrup or footed leggings, or high-waist leggings with a slight sheen. Add a soft cropped cardigan and a sleek bun. Stirrup leggings pull at the instep when you flex the foot, so try them in a full point and flex before class. Satin scrunchies, pearl studs and leather ballet flats or sneakers for the walk there complete it.
13. Fleece Pullover with Matching Leggings Pilates Outfit

In cold mornings or freezing air-conditioned studios, a fleece pullover is the layer that keeps muscles loose before class. It needs to be light enough to move in and warm enough to matter. A quarter-zip or half-zip fleece in cream, caramel or heathered taupe pairs well with leggings in the same tonal family, so the two look like a set. Fleece holds on to lint and pet hair, so I keep a lint roller in the gym bag. Wear a fitted tank underneath for when you warm up, and roll the cuffs a little.
14. Crop Top with High-Waist Flare Leggings Pilates Outfit

A fitted crop top with high-waist flare leggings gives a retro shape and makes the legs look longer. The flare adds movement at the hem while the crop keeps it sporty, showing just a little midriff. It suits most body types, especially when the waistband is wide and sits comfortably above the hip bones. Flares do drag on the floor and can catch on a reformer's foot bar, so I'd keep them for mat classes and pick a pair that ends just above the floor in grip socks. Earth tones, cushioned low trainers and a minimal tote for the mat finish it.
15. Quarter-Zip Pullover with Leggings Pilates Outfit

A lightweight quarter-zip pullover is the layer I recommend most for Pilates. It slips on and off without wrecking your hair, and the zip lets you vent as you warm up. Wear it over a plain sports bra or cropped tank with high-waist leggings in a matching tone. Pick a slightly cropped fit that ends at the hip, because a longer pullover bunches under you during seated and supine work. After class, leave it on with the zip lowered and go straight to coffee.
16. Tank Top with Biker Shorts Pilates Outfit

In hot weather or heated classes, a simple tank top with biker shorts is the most reliable outfit. The tank frees the arms for overhead stretches and spinal work, and the shorts give coverage and freedom through the hips. A matching set in a sweat-wicking fabric looks tidy. Look for a high-rise short with a soft, wide waistband instead of thin elastic, which digs in during forward folds. Throw on a light anorak and swap grip socks for cushioned slides for errands afterwards.
17. Long-Sleeve Top with Biker Shorts Pilates Outfit

A long-sleeve top with biker shorts covers the arms and frees the legs, which is right for days when the studio starts cool and you warm up fast. Thumbhole cuffs keep the sleeves from sliding up during arm work. Mocha with matching mocha shorts makes a single-color set. I'd skip slippery, shiny fabrics on the sleeves for reformer classes, since your arms slide on the straps more than you'd like. A low trainer and a crossbody take you from the reformer to the rest of the day.
18. All-Black Pilates Outfit Set

All black is a safe bet for any class and any studio. A fitted long-sleeve top with high-waist biker shorts or leggings in the same true black makes a clean silhouette. The trick to keeping it from looking basic is texture: a ribbed top with smooth leggings, or a matte bra with a slight sheen on the legs. Black also hides sweat better than any pale shade, which matters in heated reformer classes. Not all blacks match, though, and faded black next to a new piece looks gray, so check them side by side in daylight. White crew socks and fresh trainers add a crisp contrast.
19. Printed Matching Set with Hoodie Pilates Outfit

A printed set brings a bit of personality without being loud. Small patterns, micro-florals, gingham or soft marble, stay calm enough for a studio. Pair it with a solid oversized hoodie in one of the colors from the print. Large bold prints can actually make it harder for an instructor to see whether your pelvis is level, which is why I'd keep the scale small. Swap grip socks for chunky sneakers after class and add a canvas tote.
20. Burgundy Matching Pilates Outfit Set

Deep burgundy is one of the most flattering colors in a studio full of beige. It's warm, rich and looks expensive even on simple pieces. A cropped hoodie and high-waist leggings in the exact same shade make a set you can wear before, during and after class. Under the hoodie, a black or tonal sports bra. Dark reds can bleed in the first few washes, so I wash a new set alone in cold water at least once. Cream grip socks, a beige mat and gold or tortoiseshell hair clips set off the color.
21. Seamless Ribbed Jumpsuit Pilates Outfit

A ribbed one-piece jumpsuit is the easiest thing to pull on for class. There's no waistband to roll and no hem to ride up, so you never adjust it mid-move. The ribbed nylon gives texture and gentle compression. Look for a built-in shelf bra and a square or scoop neck. Because it fits close, it shows every shift in your form, which is exactly what an instructor wants. The downside is bathroom breaks, so I'd keep it for classes rather than a long day out. Add a light zip-up for the walk in and grip socks for the reformer.
22. Pastel Two-Piece Pilates Outfit Set

Soft pastels are at the center of the Pilates princess look. A two-piece set in lavender, sage, powder blue or butter yellow brightens a studio and keeps the mood calm. Pair a crop or wrap top with matching leggings or shorts in the same shade. A slight sheen or a silky hand feel adds polish. Pastels show sweat patches more than darker colors, so these work best in gentle mat classes. Keep accessories minimal: a claw clip, a fine anklet and a cream canvas tote.
23. Unitard with Cropped Jacket Pilates Outfit

A sleek unitard under a cropped jacket is a good mix of fitted and loose. The unitard gives a smooth base that stays in place through every move; choose black, espresso or navy with light compression. Over it, a cropped puffer vest, a boxy zip jacket or a cropped sweatshirt. I like this one for cold days because the outer layer handles the walk while the unitard is all you need once class starts. Don't leave a puffer on the reformer, though; the slippery fabric slides on the carriage. White trainers and sunglasses finish it.
24. Cropped Cardigan with Leggings Pilates Outfit

A soft cropped cardigan is a gentle layer for before and after class and fits the softer direction activewear has taken. Choose a light knit in ballet pink, oatmeal or dove gray, over a plain sports bra and high-waist leggings in a matching shade. It warms without bulk and comes off quickly once your muscles loosen. Buttons can press into the spine lying down, so the cardigan stays off for mat work. Button it up to arrive, wear it open after. Scrunched crew socks, fresh trainers and a woven tote take it into the street.
25. Leotard with Wrap Skirt Pilates Outfit

For a dance-studio feel, try a leotard and wrap skirt combination. A high-cut leotard in black, mauve or dusty rose gives a supportive base, and a light, semi-sheer wrap skirt tied at the hip adds movement and some coverage. This suits mat Pilates or barre-fusion classes best. I'd take the skirt off for reformer work, since loose fabric can get caught in the springs or under the carriage. A soft sheen on the fabric, a ballet bun tied with satin ribbon and ballet-style grip socks finish it.
26. Short-Sleeve Matching Set Pilates Outfit

A short-sleeve set gives a bit more arm coverage than a tank and still feels light. The sleeves leave the shoulders free and suit anyone who prefers a more covered look. Pair a fitted short-sleeve top with matching high-waist shorts or cropped leggings in sea glass, peach or pale lemon. Sets like this pack small and dry quickly, which makes them useful for vacation workouts or outdoor mat sessions. If you're training outside, I'd add sunscreen to the shoulders and back that the cut leaves bare. Sporty slides and a wide-brim hat finish it.
27. V-Neck Bodysuit with Leggings Pilates Outfit

A V-neck bodysuit with leggings makes a longer, connected line between top and bottom. The V opens up the face and neck, and the bodysuit stays tucked through every spinal roll and curl. Pick a sculpting fabric with light support through the torso, and full-length high-waist leggings in a matching or tonal shade. Thumbholes add a functional touch. A deep V can gape when you lean forward on the reformer, so check it bending over in the mirror before class. A structured belt bag worn crossbody works in and out of the studio.
28. Flared Leggings with Matching Bra Pilates Outfit

Flared leggings are back in studios, and with a matching bra top they look fresh and lengthening. The flare makes a soft bell shape from the knee down and gives a retro feel. A scoop-neck, cross-back or triangle bra top keeps it cohesive. A high-rise waistband that smooths and supports makes it comfortable on most body types. As with any flare, I'd keep these for the mat rather than the reformer. Soft gray, dusty mauve or terracotta in one tone, a cropped zip hoodie and low trainers finish the outfit.
29. Half-Zip Pullover with Biker Shorts Pilates Outfit

A half-zip pullover over biker shorts handles unpredictable studio temperatures well. Zip it up for the warm-up, then open it as you heat up. The shorts keep the legs free. Choose a relaxed pullover in soft fleece or light knit with fitted high-rise shorts in a matching neutral, so the roomy top and sleek shorts balance each other. A loose pullover will flop over your face in any inversion, so I take it off for those parts of class. It goes straight from the studio to lunch.
30. Square Neck Romper Pilates Outfit

A square-neck romper is a sporty, feminine one-piece. The square neckline frames the collarbones and shoulders, and the cut leaves no midriff showing, which suits anyone who prefers more coverage. Look for a compressive stretch fabric with built-in bra support and a leg length that stays put; a short leg that rides up during leg circles is the most common complaint. Black, navy or olive keep it versatile, and the clean lines feel almost ballet-like. A light duster cardigan, a low bun and white trainers finish it.
How Leggings Lose Their Stretch, and How to Slow It
Good leggings are expensive enough that it's worth looking after them. The stretch comes from elastane, and elastane hates heat. A hot wash and a tumble dryer break it down far faster than wear does, which is why leggings go baggy at the knees and seat after a few months of careless washing.
- Wash inside out, in cold or cool water, on a gentle cycle.
- Skip fabric softener; it coats the fibers and makes moisture-wicking fabric hold sweat and smell.
- Air-dry flat or over a rack, out of direct sun, which fades darker shades.
- Keep them away from towels and anything with velcro, which pull threads and cause pilling.
Check your favorite pair now and then by stretching it in good light. If you can see skin color through the fabric at the seat, the fibers have thinned and the pair belongs at home rather than in a front-row studio spot.
What Stays Put Matters More Than What's Trending
Pilates clothes earn their place by staying out of the way. Every outfit above, from matching sets and leotards to layered looks and one-piece jumpsuits, comes back to the same few things: fabric that stretches and breathes, waistbands and hems that don't move, and a shape the instructor can read. Color and texture are where your personality comes in. When nothing needs adjusting, you can give the whole hour to the work, and that's the point of getting dressed for it properly.
