After a long run of beige and quiet tailoring, the mood this year has swung the other way. Maximalism is back: strong color, big volume, clashing prints and a lot of personality. Brooches, sculptural shoulders, bubble hems and heavy embellishment are everywhere. The part people miss is that good maximalism is still planned. When I put one of these looks together, every loud piece has a job, and there's usually one quiet thread, a shared color or a plain base, holding it all in place. Below are 30 head-to-toe outfits, from 80s power suits to texture mixes, with notes on why each one works and where it can go wrong.

Building a Clash That Still Looks Deliberate
The line between maximalist and messy is mostly about planning. When I put together a loud outfit, I run through the same checks every time.
- Pick one shared color and repeat it at least twice, in a print, a bag or a piece of jewelry.
- Mix print scales. One large, one small. Two prints of the same size blur together.
- Give each zone one focal point. If the shoulders are huge, keep the skirt simple; if the skirt is sequined, keep the top plain.
- Choose one metal for jewelry, or mix on purpose by repeating each metal more than once.
Then take a photo in the mirror. A camera flattens a look the way other people's eyes do, and anything that reads as a mistake on screen will read that way in person too.
1. Oversized Shoulder Pad Blazer Maximalist Outfit

Big shoulders are the easiest way into this style, so I'd begin with an oversized blazer. Under it, a crisp white button-down tucked into high-waisted black wide-leg trousers that break just over pointed heels. The blazer goes in cobalt or red, with strong shoulders that frame the face. A chunky gold chain belt at the waist stops the jacket swallowing you. Stack gold jewelry, layered necklaces, big hoops and a cocktail ring, and carry a croc-embossed top-handle bag. It works for a creative office or dinner. Check the shoulder seam: padding should extend the line, not sit past your arm by more than an inch or so, or the jacket wears you.
2. Balloon Skirt Maximalist Outfit

Balloon skirts gather in at the hem, which is what gives them that rounded, sculpted shape. Magenta or emerald in a fabric stiff enough to hold the curve is what I'd look for; limp fabric just collapses. A fitted ribbed knit in cream or black on top keeps the proportions in check. Add pointed slingbacks, a small structured bag, one oversized gold brooch near the collarbone and a slim metallic belt. That's enough. It suits garden parties, gallery openings and brunch. Balloon hems add width at the knee, so if you're petite, keep the skirt length just below the knee rather than mid-calf.
3. Clashing Prints Maximalist Outfit

Pattern mixing looks deliberate once two prints share a color. A navy-and-cream striped long-sleeve top under a floral midi with navy in it is the example I use most. Add a leopard clutch and red pointed pumps for extra personality. Jewelry stays small, gold hoops and one ring, because the prints are already busy. A cropped black leather jacket over the shoulders gives structure on cool evenings. Mix scales too: a fine stripe with a large floral clashes well, while two prints of the same size just blur together. Wear it to brunch, creative meetings or a weekend market.
4. Metallic Dress Maximalist Outfit

Liquid metallics catch light with every move, and a midi slip dress in silver or brushed gold is the simplest way to wear them. An oversized ivory blazer over it adds structure and makes it work before dark. Strappy metallic heels in the same tone lengthen the leg, and a sculptural silver clutch adds shape. Skip fine jewelry here; geometric earrings and stacked silver cuffs hold their own against the shine. Slick the hair back. Metallic fabric shows every line underneath and wrinkles at the seat, so I'd choose a lined dress and stand at a cocktail party rather than sit.
5. Baroque Print Maximalist Outfit

Baroque prints borrow from old ornament: swirling gold and black damask on silk or jacquard. A midi in that print with a cropped black velvet jacket adds depth. Black suede platforms and a structured mini bag with gold hardware match the richness of the print. Detailed gold earrings and several gold rings across both hands, a dark lip and soft waves give it a slightly gothic mood. It suits dinner, the theater or an evening party. Jacquard is heavy and can add bulk at the hip, so pick a dress with a defined waist.
6. Feather Trim Maximalist Outfit

Feathers have become the main texture trim of the season. A sleek black midi pencil dress is the base, and a cropped jacket with dense ivory or blush feather trim at the cuffs and hem adds movement. Pointed black mules with crystal straps, small sparkling drops, a satin clutch and fresh makeup finish it. Keep jewelry fine so the feathers lead. It's an evening outfit for cocktail parties and weddings. Feather cuffs drag through food and drinks, so push the sleeves back at the table. Store the jacket on a padded hanger with space around it; crushed feathers rarely recover.
7. Statement Brooch Maximalist Outfit

Brooches have come back as the main event of an outfit, not a finishing touch. I build this one around a relaxed camel blazer with soft shoulder padding and pin an oversized gold or silver sculptural brooch at the lapel. Under it, a black silk cami tucked into straight dark jeans, then square-toe black ankle boots and a burgundy crossbody. The brooch turns a basic blazer and jeans into something considered. A heavy brooch drags a thin lapel down, so pin it through the lapel facing as well, or choose a blazer with a firm, interfaced collar.
8. Voluminous Trousers Maximalist Outfit

Barrel-leg and balloon trousers put the volume on the bottom. They curve out through the thigh and taper at the ankle, and in heavy crepe or wool suiting they hold that shape. Chartreuse or deep violet makes them the focus. A fitted bodysuit or fine knit tucked in cleanly balances them. Add a slim patent belt, sculptural heeled mules, a compact bag, resin bangles and geometric drops. It's a strong look for a creative workplace. Barrel legs add width at the hip, which suits straight figures most; if you're curvy, a softer, slightly wider cut through the hip is kinder.
9. Leather Trench Coat Maximalist Outfit

A mid-calf leather trench in black or burgundy adds drama to whatever is under it. I'd wear it over a cream silk blouse and black tailored wide-leg trousers, with pointed black boots on a slim heel to keep the line long. Big dark sunglasses, a woven-leather top-handle bag and gold hoops finish it. It suits city days, travel and in-between weather. Leather this long is heavy, so check the shoulders before buying; a coat that's too wide there slides back all day. Faux leather cracks over time, so real leather is worth it here if you can.
10. Sequin Maximalist Outfit

Sequins in daylight are one of my favorite mixes. A gunmetal or champagne sequin midi skirt with an oversized charcoal cashmere sweater, loosely tucked at the front, is the casual-with-shine contrast this style does best. Square-toe flats with hardware and a slouchy leather hobo keep it relaxed. Small hoops and one bracelet are enough. It's right for brunch or shopping. Sequins snag knits, so tuck only the front and let the back hang outside the skirt. A lined skirt also saves your legs from the scratchy sequin backing.
11. Corset Top Maximalist Outfit

Corset tops have moved from evening-only into everyday wardrobes. A structured black one with gold baroque embroidery or visible boning contrasts with high-waisted ivory wide-leg trousers. Over it, a long black blazer with sharp shoulders. Pointed black stilettos and a gold chain belt finish it, with layered gold chains, chunky rings and sculptural earrings. It suits dinner parties and birthdays. Corsets need to fit at the ribs; too loose and they gape, too tight and you'll be counting hours. Sit in it in the fitting room before deciding.
12. Power Skirt Suit Maximalist Outfit

The 80s power suit comes back with bigger shoulders and louder patterns. A checked or plaid skirt suit with an oversized blazer and a straight midi skirt is the version I'd wear. Under it, a silk blouse with a big bow at the neck softens the look. Pointed heels in fuchsia or cobalt, a structured top-handle bag, a brooch on the lapel and oversized pearls finish it. It's built for presentations and important meetings. Line up the checks at the seams when you try it on; a mismatched plaid at the side seam is the first sign of a poorly cut suit.
13. Fringe Maximalist Outfit

Fringe this season is sleeker than festival tassels. A knee-length dress in emerald or burgundy with fringe that moves as you walk turns motion into part of the outfit. Sleek pointed ankle boots, a slim metallic cuff, small drops, a structured clutch and a tailored blazer over the shoulders keep it polished. It's made for a dance floor. Fringe tangles when stored folded, so hang the dress and shake it out before wearing. Long fringe also catches on chair backs and car doors, which is worth knowing before a long evening.
14. Bold Color Blocking Maximalist Outfit

High-contrast color blocking works if the shapes stay clean. Electric turquoise wide-leg trousers, a bubblegum pink oversized blazer and a vivid orange silk top under it is loud by design. No ruffles or prints. White pointed pumps and a neutral structured bag ground it, and chunky resin earrings in one of the accent colors tie it together. It's for creative workplaces and daytime events when you want a bright mood. Three strong colors work best when one of them sits away from your face; I'd keep the shade that suits your skin closest to it.
15. Icy Blue Maximalist Outfit

Icy blues and soft whites are among this year's strongest colors. I'd build a single-color look: an icy blue satin maxi with a light sheen under a frosty white cropped bouclé jacket with sculptural shoulders. Silver strappy heels with crystals and a pearlescent clutch keep it cool. The interest comes from texture, satin, bouclé, crystal and pearl finishes in one color family. White gold or silver with moonstone or aquamarine suits it. It's for spring weddings and daytime galas. Icy blue is hard on warm, olive skin, so if it drains you, a soft periwinkle keeps the feel.
16. Lace Detail Maximalist Outfit

Lace here is sharp rather than sweet. A black lace bodysuit under an oversized charcoal blazer, with high-waisted black leather trousers and pointed black boots, lets lace show at the neckline and cuffs. Add a wide black belt with gold hardware and layered gold chains, plus an emerald or ruby mini bag for color. It's tailoring with a romantic edge for date nights and gallery openings. Lace bodysuits with snap closures can pull at the crotch when you sit; look for one with a longer body or a softer stretch lace.
17. Plaid Mix Maximalist Outfit

Plaid goes maximalist when you mix scales and colors in one look. Begin with an oversized plaid blazer in pink and orange or blue and green, then a micro-plaid button-down in a different scale and tailored plaid trousers in a third check. It sounds chaotic, but if all three share one neutral, black, cream or navy, it holds together. Chunky lug-sole loafers, a structured satchel, small hoops and a watch finish it. Vary the scales: one large, one medium, one tiny. Three medium checks together will buzz on the eye and in photos.
18. Statement Belt Maximalist Outfit

A big belt can change a whole outfit. A wide corset-style black leather belt with oversized gold hardware over a loose white cotton poplin shirtdress gives an hourglass shape straight away. Knee-high black block-heel boots and a structured black shoulder bag, with chunky gold hoops, bangles and rings, echo the hardware. The soft dress against the hard belt is the contrast. It works from day into dinner. Corset belts sit best at the narrowest part of the waist; if they ride up, the belt is too wide for your torso length.
19. Oversized Knit Maximalist Outfit

Knits this season come in loud colors and big shapes. A chunky oversized sweater in fuchsia, lime or yellow over a sleek midi slip skirt in a contrasting jewel tone is the texture clash I like. Pointed mules with metallic detail, a slouchy clutch, thick resin bangles, sculptural earrings and layered chains finish it. The big top works because the skirt is narrow. It's cozy enough for weekend brunch. Slip skirts cling to wool, so a half slip or a quick anti-static spray keeps the skirt hanging straight.
20. Crochet Dress Maximalist Outfit

Crochet goes bold with strong color. A full-length crochet maxi in tangerine or hot coral over a slip dress in a contrasting bright that shows through the openwork is the idea. Flat leather sandals with chunky hardware, a woven straw bucket bag, citrus resin earrings, beaded bracelets and a wide-brim hat finish it for summer weekends and dinners by the water. Choose the slip carefully: a contrasting color makes the crochet pop, while a nude slip makes it look like skin. Long crochet stretches with wear, so fold rather than hang it.
21. Sculptural Silhouette Maximalist Outfit

Here the drama comes from shape. A crisp white cotton top with an exaggerated peplum, a sculpted neckline or an asymmetric shoulder goes with sleek black cigarette trousers and black stilettos with a shaped heel. Keep accessories simple: a sculptural silver cuff, geometric drops and a polished metal clutch. Pull the hair back cleanly. It's maximalism through shape alone, for gallery openings and creative work settings. Structured cotton tops crease at the elbow and waist, so carry the top on a hanger and put it on last.
22. Animal Print Maximalist Outfit

Head-to-toe animal print only works if you commit. A long-sleeved leopard or zebra maxi with a dramatic shape, then an oversized faux-fur coat in a contrasting print, cheetah over zebra, for example. Black knee-high stiletto boots, a structured black clutch, gold hoops, layered necklaces and stacked rings, plus a red lip, finish it. Half measures look accidental. It's an evening look for when you want to be noticed. Faux fur sheds on dark fabrics, so give the coat a shake outdoors before wearing it over the dress.
23. Bralette Layering Maximalist Outfit

Bralettes worn as a visible layer are one of the most discussed tricks this year. A lace or satin bralette in crimson or cobalt over a crisp white shirt, left partly unbuttoned, is how I'd try it. Add high-waisted charcoal wide-leg trousers, pointed heels and a long trench over the shoulders for drama and some cover. A slim metallic belt, drop earrings and a top-handle bag finish it. It plays with lingerie and outerwear, so it suits creative events and fashion parties more than the office. Pick a bralette with structure; a flimsy one looks like a mistake over a shirt.
24. Neon Maximalist Outfit

A neon lime or electric pink matching suit, oversized blazer and wide-leg trousers, worn over a plain white tank, is about as bright as clothing gets. White pointed pumps and a clear acrylic clutch keep accessories out of the way. Silver jewelry and big dark sunglasses balance the color. It's a mood-lifting outfit for summer parties and daytime events. Neon washes out pale skin near the face, so the white tank is doing real work here. Wash neon inside out in cold water; it fades faster than any other dye.
25. Crystallized Denim Maximalist Outfit

Crystal-covered denim, straight or wide-leg and studded with rhinestones or metal, turns jeans into the statement. A fitted black turtleneck or bodysuit keeps the top quiet, and a sharp-shouldered black blazer adds structure, with pointed black boots. A chain belt, big silver earrings and a sleek black clutch finish it. The denim keeps it relaxed while the crystals make it an evening outfit. Embellished jeans need a gentle hand wash inside out, and stones can scratch leather car seats or catch on knitwear, so wear them with a smooth top.
26. Structured Cape Maximalist Outfit

A structured cape replaces the jacket in the most dramatic looks here. A floor-length tailored cape in royal purple or crimson over a fitted midi in a matching shade gives movement and an editorial shape. Metallic pointed heels, a small leather clutch and sculptural earrings, with hair sleek and off the face, finish it for black-tie galas and formal evenings. Capes limit arm movement, so look for one with arm slits, or you'll be lifting the whole thing to hold a glass. Long capes also need a clear path; mind the stairs.
27. Mixed Texture Maximalist Outfit

Texture can carry a look without prints. A chunky cream cable-knit sweater, a liquid-satin emerald midi skirt and a cropped tweed jacket with metallic threads put matte, shine, nub and smooth in one outfit. Burgundy velvet ankle boots and a patent crossbody add two more surfaces. Gold jewelry, layered chains, mixed-metal earrings and stacked rings, ties it together. It suits dinners and cultural events. With this many textures, keep the colors close; three or four textured pieces in three or four bright colors tips into noise.
28. Stacked Jewelry Maximalist Outfit

Sometimes the jewelry is the outfit. Begin with something plain, a black slip maxi or a black turtleneck with tailored trousers. Then go big: layered chains in mixed lengths and metals, sculptural bangles and cuffs on both wrists, rings on several fingers and oversized chandelier or geometric earrings. A metallic belt adds one more layer of shine. Sleek black heels and a plain clutch keep the focus up top. It's right for holiday parties. Heavy earrings pull on the lobe after a few hours, so choose hollow or resin versions if you'll wear them all night.
29. Maximalist Evening Gown Outfit

When the dress code calls for full glamour, a floor-length gown in a rich jewel tone with two dramatic details is the answer. Volume plus sequins, or feathers plus an unexpected color. Metallic platforms, a crystal clutch and earrings heavy with stones, with a red or berry lip and soft waves, give it an old-Hollywood feel. It's for galas, formal weddings and black-tie events. More than two big details tends to fight, so I stop at two. Bring a small sewing kit; sequin threads come loose on long evenings.
30. Maximalist Layered Look 2026

This last look layers everything: texture, proportion and personality. A fitted neutral turtleneck bodysuit, a sheer printed blouse over it, then an oversized tailored vest in a contrasting plaid or jacquard. Wide-leg trousers in a bold solid anchor it. Pointed heels, a big sculptural bag and layered jewelry come next, and a long wool or leather coat over the shoulders is the final layer. It's a street-style look for fashion events and creative workplaces. Layers this deep get warm indoors, so make sure the first layer is thin and the coat comes off easily.
Big Volume on a Petite or Curvy Frame
Oversized shoulders, balloon skirts and barrel legs all add width. On a petite frame, wear one volume piece at a time and keep the rest close to the body. A balloon skirt with a fitted top works; a balloon skirt with an oversized blazer swallows you.
Curvy figures do well with volume at the shoulder and hem and definition at the waist. A belt over an oversized blazer, or a corset belt over a shirtdress, keeps the shape visible under all the drama. Barrel trousers that balloon right at the hip are the one cut I'd usually skip.
Sequins, Feathers and Velvet Need Different Care
Statement pieces are often the delicate ones. Sequins and crystals go inside out in a mesh bag on a gentle cold wash, or by hand; never the dryer. Feathers should be spot-cleaned only and stored on a padded hanger with room around them. Velvet crushes under weight, so hang it rather than fold it, and steam from the back to lift flattened pile.
Heavy beaded or sequined dresses stretch on a hanger over time. Fold them in tissue and lay them flat in a drawer instead. Leather and faux-leather pieces want the opposite: a wide, shaped hanger and some air, so the shoulders keep their line and the surface doesn't stick to itself in a crowded closet.
More Is More, One Loud Piece at a Time
Maximalism isn't wearing everything at once. It's wearing the right bold things on purpose. Sculptural shoulders, clashing prints, brooches and liquid metallics all share that idea of expressing yourself without apology. You can go head-to-toe or add one loud piece to what you already own. If you're not sure where to go, try one statement item this week, a brooch, a balloon skirt or a strong blazer, and build the next outfit around how it made you feel.
