Linen trousers are the piece I reach for most when a client over 40 tells me her jeans feel too hot and too stiff by July. Linen breathes, it falls away from the body instead of clinging, and it gets softer every time you wash it. Below are 30 full outfits, each built from top to shoes with the small extras included, so you can copy one straight off the page. I've added what I actually check in the fitting room for each one, because the same pair of pants can look polished or sloppy depending on the rise, the hem and the weight of the fabric.

Reading a Linen Label in the Fitting Room
Most of the disappointment I see with linen trousers comes from the fabric, not the styling. Before I even look at the color, I check these:
- Weight. Hold one leg up to the light. Very thin, gauzy linen shows pockets and underwear and creases the moment you sit. A medium weight drapes better and stays opaque.
- Blend. Pure linen is the coolest and creases the most. Linen with cotton wrinkles less; linen with viscose drapes more fluidly but can shrink if washed warm.
- Lining. For white and pale pants, a lining or at least lined pockets saves you from show-through.
- Rise. Sit down in them. Linen has almost no stretch, so a rise that feels fine standing can dig in at the front or gape at the back once seated.
- Waist. A flat front with elastic only at the back gives comfort without gathers all the way around.
Size up or down?
Linen relaxes as you wear it, especially at the seat and knees. If you're between sizes in a fitted style, I usually go with the smaller one, unless it's a viscose blend that may shrink on its first wash. Wide-leg and drawstring styles are more forgiving, so buy for the waist and have the length taken up.
1. White Linen Pants Outfit With Chambray Shirt

This is the first outfit I build for most people trying linen, because it's very hard to get wrong. A light blue chambray shirt over a white camisole, loosely tucked into high-waisted white linen pants, keeps one long pale line from shoulder to shoe. I roll the sleeves to just below the elbow, the narrowest part of most forearms. Tan leather flat sandals, a straw tote big enough for sunscreen and water, and tortoiseshell sunglasses finish it for a farmers' market or a seaside town. One check with white linen: stand by a window and look in the mirror. If you can see pocket bags or underwear lines, choose a lined pair or wear nude no-show underwear.
2. Black Linen Pants Outfit With White Tee

Simple, and it holds up. A white cotton crewneck tucked at the front into high-waisted black wide-leg linen pants shows your waist without the fuss of a full tuck. I size the tee up slightly so the tuck sits soft instead of pulling across the bust. Black leather slides, a gold chain at the neckline and a black crossbody take you from morning errands to a rooftop drink. Dark linen hides creases far better than pale linen, so this is the pair I suggest for long days. The catch: black linen fades in sun and hot water, so wash it inside out on cool.
3. Beige Linen Pants Outfit For Brunch

Putting the darker color near your face is the whole trick here. Beige linen pants with a navy sleeveless blouse in matte crepe or a cotton blend pulls attention upward and stops the pale pants from washing you out. Nude espadrille wedges add a little height, and a tan crossbody leaves your hands free at the brunch table. A thin gold pendant and small hoops are plenty. If you're very fair, hold the beige against your skin before buying; some beiges sit so close to skin tone that the lower half reads as one flat block.
4. Navy Linen Pants Work Outfit

For office days I look for navy linen with a straight or slightly tapered leg and a pressed front crease, because that crease does most of the work of making linen read as tailoring. Over an ivory sleeveless shell, a lightweight beige blazer covers the shoulders for meetings. Nude pointed-toe flats lengthen the leg, and a cognac leather tote carries the laptop. Navy simply looks more formal than tan or white linen. Check the blazer's lining before you buy: a fully lined jacket over linen traps heat and undoes the point of the trousers by noon.
5. Olive Linen Pants Casual Outfit

Olive with black is the pairing I give clients who find cream too precious for daily life. Olive wide-leg pants with an elastic waist and a black cotton or linen-blend tank make a uniform you can repeat all week for grocery runs and school pickup. A natural straw bucket bag adds texture, a thin black belt marks the waist, and a few gold bangles do the rest. An honest note on elastic waists: a belt only sits flat over fine gathers. On thick, bunchy elastic, skip the belt and let the tank skim over the top.
6. Wide Leg Linen Pants With Fitted Bodysuit

Wide legs need something close-fitting on top, and a sleeved bodysuit gives the smoothest tuck there is, with no shirt fabric bunching inside the waistband. I choose the bodysuit and pants in neighboring neutrals, cream with taupe for instance, so the eye reads line above and volume below. Metallic strappy flats, a structured mini bag, a low bun and small silver pieces make it right for a dinner date or a gallery evening. Bodysuits don't suit every torso. If yours is long, the snap closure can drag, so check the body length before you buy.
7. Cropped Linen Pants Outfit With Sandals

Cropped linen stops just above the ankle bone, which turns the sandal into part of the outfit. A stone or cream straight leg with a navy and white striped boatneck tee is the classic coastal pairing. Tan block-heeled sandals help more than you'd think: a crop cuts the leg line, and a modest heel gives some of it back. Add a canvas tote and round tortoiseshell sunglasses for a boardwalk weekend. If you're petite, pick a crop that ends at the ankle rather than mid-calf; the shorter the pant, the shorter you look.
8. Linen Pants With Blazer Office Outfit

When the dress code says business casual and the forecast says heat, a blazer is what keeps linen from looking like holiday wear. Tailored charcoal or navy linen trousers go under a white cotton shirt and a knit blazer, which is softer and cooler than a woven one. I fold the shirt cuffs back over the blazer sleeves so a strip of white frames the wrist. Pointed loafers in patent or suede, a structured satchel, a thin gold watch and studs are all the jewelry a presentation needs. Expect creases across the lap after sitting. That's linen, and nobody in the meeting will give it a second thought.
9. Linen Pants With Sweater Fall Outfit

Linen doesn't have to retire in September. A fine cashmere crewneck in camel or rust over wide-leg linen gives a soft-against-crisp texture, and fine is the operative word: a chunky knit tucked into linen bunches at the waist and swamps the leg. Suede ankle boots in a matching neutral, a long pendant for a vertical line and a loose wool-blend scarf carry it to an orchard or a casual Friday. Watch the hem. Wide linen over ankle boots should skim the top of the boot, not pool on it. And keep the suede out of the rain, since it darkens and spots.
10. Drawstring Linen Pants Beach Outfit

Drawstring linen pants are what I pack for any sandy trip, because they pull straight on over a damp swimsuit. Take a relaxed white or natural pair and throw a white cotton tunic or oversized shirt on top, worn open over the swimsuit or a bralette. Flat leather flip-flops are fine on dry sand, but if you'll wade through surf, wear waterproof slides; saltwater stiffens and marks leather. A wide-brim straw hat, a big woven tote for the towel and a paperback, and a few beaded bracelets. You can go from the car to the sand to a seafood shack without changing.
11. White Linen Pants With Black Silk Top

This one is all about matte against shine. I tuck a sleeveless black silk top with a soft V or a cowl into high-waisted white wide-leg linen; on a fuller bust the cowl sits better, since a deep V tends to gape. Black strappy heeled sandals and a black clutch with a gold clasp turn it into dinner wear, and brushed gold drops with red lipstick finish it. A practical point: only tuck dark silk into white linen that's lined or properly opaque, or the black shadows through at the hip.
12. Linen Pants And Silk Camisole Evening Outfit

Date night doesn't need a dress. Relaxed charcoal linen trousers with a champagne silk camisole repeat the matte-and-shine idea in a softer key. Metallic heeled sandals, a fine layered necklace and a small beaded bag keep it firmly in evening territory. I always tell clients to bring a cashmere wrap, because neither linen nor silk holds much warmth once the sun drops. Champagne is tricky on some skin tones. Hold it to your face in daylight; if you look grey, a deeper bronze silk will do the same job.
13. Linen Pants And Denim Jacket Weekend Outfit

A broken-in denim jacket over linen is one of my favorite weekend fixes, because the heavier cotton gives the soft linen something to lean against. Beige or white trousers and a white tee tucked at the front go under a medium-wash jacket with the sleeves pushed up. White leather sneakers, a canvas crossbody and a cap or ponytail make it a good day of sightseeing outfit. Check where the jacket ends. It should finish at or just above the high hip; a longer denim jacket over wide linen cuts you at your widest point.
14. Linen Pants And Tunic Top Vacation Outfit

Proportion is where a tunic over linen goes wrong. The tunic hem should land at the hip and the pants underneath should be straight or slim, otherwise you get volume from shoulder to floor. I'd take a printed or embroidered cotton voile tunic and pull the pant color straight from the print. Flat gladiator sandals, a natural straw sunhat, a long pendant with a stone or shell and a woven crossbody for exploring. Voile packs flat and recovers quickly, and covered shoulders with a long leg suit temple visits where modest dress is expected.
15. Matching Linen Top And Pants Set

A matching set does the work of a dress with the flexibility of separates. I lean toward oatmeal or sage, which hide light creasing better than pale pink. One color from top to toe makes a long line, and mules or thong sandals in the same tone keep it unbroken. Layered gold necklaces, small hoops and a raffia tote are enough. On a trip, wear the set together for lunch, then split it: the top with jeans, the pants with a contrasting blouse. If you buy the pieces separately, compare them side by side, as linen dye lots can differ.
16. Striped Linen Pants Outfit With Solid Tee

Striped linen gives you pattern without noise. I'd pick navy and cream stripes on a wide leg and repeat one stripe color in a fitted solid tee, navy on navy, so it looks planned rather than busy. White leather sneakers and a neutral crossbody keep it casual for travel or museum days, and a thin gold chain with a watch adds a little polish. Vertical stripes lengthen, but wide stripes on a wide leg can broaden the hip. If that bothers you, go for a narrow pinstripe.
17. Linen Pants And Peplum Top Dinner Outfit

A peplum puts structure at the waist, which is exactly what linen's straight, soft lines lack. I choose a solid jewel tone, emerald or deep berry, worn with the peplum seam sitting right at the waistband of high-waisted black or navy linen wide-leg pants. That seam has to land at your natural waist; if it falls lower, the flare widens the hip instead of shaping it. Pointed kitten heels, a metallic clutch, crystal drops and an updo make it right for a birthday dinner or a night at the theater.
18. High Waisted Linen Pants Outfit With Boxy Tee

For women who don't want to tuck, this is the proportion I use most. High-waisted terracotta or sand linen pants with a cream boxy cotton tee that ends right at the waistband, or overlaps it slightly. It stays modest and still tells the eye where your waist is. Flat leather huaraches, a woven market tote and round sunglasses suit a picnic or a morning of vintage browsing. If the tee hangs much past the waistband, the effect collapses and you look shorter, so take this test in front of the mirror.
19. Linen Pants And Espadrilles Summer Outfit

Espadrilles and linen were made for each other. Beige straight-leg trousers, a white cotton peasant blouse with light embroidery at the neckline, natural jute wedges, a leather-trimmed straw bag and a few wooden bangles. Because the blouse has volume at the sleeve, I keep the trouser leg straight rather than wide. Jute soles soak up water and can come apart once soaked, so I save espadrilles for dry days: a wine tasting, a garden party, a terrace lunch.
20. Linen Pants And White Sneakers Outfit

White sneakers make linen look current and practical at once. Cropped or ankle-length olive or navy trousers go with a white crewneck, or a relaxed grey marl sweatshirt on cooler mornings. I prefer low-profile court sneakers here; chunky soles fight a cropped leg. A neutral backpack and a cap for sun make it a city walking outfit. With sneakers, the hem should clear the shoe by about a finger's width so a sliver of ankle shows. Any longer and the fabric drags on the tongue.
21. Linen Pants And Ballet Flats Outfit

Ballet flats are back, and they ask for a slimmer pant. A tapered or slim-straight leg in beige or navy lets the flat show; a wide leg swallows it whole. A tonal cotton cardigan over a tank handles changeable weather, then nude leather flats, a pearl pendant with studs and a quilted chain bag. It suits a lunch date or a baby shower nicely. Most ballet flats offer next to no arch support, so for a museum afternoon on your feet I'd slip in a thin cushioned insole.
22. Linen Pants And Wedge Sandals Summer Outfit

Wedges solve the outdoor problem: they don't sink into a lawn the way thin heels do. Tan cork wedges with cream wide-leg linen that grazes the top of the foot, hemmed while you're wearing the wedge, not flats. On top, an off-shoulder cotton blouse with a little smocking, a woven clutch, wooden drop earrings and a wide-brim straw hat. It fits a garden wedding with a relaxed dress code or a rooftop cocktail hour. For anything more formal, I'd trade the off-shoulder blouse for a silk top.
23. Linen Pants With Straw Hat And Woven Tote

Here the accessories carry the outfit, so keep the base quiet: relaxed sand wide-leg pants and a white tank or sleeveless shirt tucked at the waist. A wide-brim Panama hat in natural straw shades your face, and a woven tote holds a beach towel or market finds. Flat tan sandals, thin gold rings and a fine anklet finish it for resort afternoons. Straw crushes in a suitcase. Wear the hat on travel day, or pack it crown-up with soft clothes stuffed inside.
24. Linen Pants And Off-Shoulder Top Outfit

An off-shoulder neckline frames the collarbone and face, which is why I like it for warm evenings. A white eyelet blouse with elastic at the neckline goes over high-waisted navy or black linen trousers, the structured pant balancing the softer top. Strappy block-heeled sandals, a small woven leather bag and turquoise or hammered gold earrings complete it for a date or a rehearsal dinner. Before buying, raise both arms in the fitting room. If the elastic climbs onto your shoulders then, it will keep doing it all night.
25. Linen Pants And Printed Scarf Outfit

This is what I suggest to anyone who says her linen looks plain. Start neutral with beige trousers, a white tank and flat leather sandals, then add one printed silk scarf, knotted loosely at the neck or tied on a crossbody strap. A thin gold bangle and oversized sunglasses are the only other extras. Pull one color from the scarf for your lipstick or bag and the outfit holds together. Silk twill keeps a knot far better than chiffon, which slips loose within the hour.
26. Linen Pants With Belt And Loafers Outfit

Linen waistbands can look unfinished on their own, and a belt fixes that. Camel or tobacco straight-leg trousers with a cream silk shirt tucked cleanly, a cognac belt with a plain gold buckle, matching loafers and a brown leather tote keep the palette warm and connected. Gold hoops and a watch are enough. I keep the belt narrow, around an inch, because a wide belt on soft linen tends to roll at the top edge when you sit. Good for casual office days and client lunches.
27. Linen Pants And Oversized Sunglasses Outfit

Big sunglasses add drama for no effort, and they suit the clean line of dark linen. Black wide-leg trousers with a white V-neck tee or silk shell, then oversized black acetate frames with a slightly retro shape, think classic Audrey Hepburn. Black slides, a black crossbody, a silver cuff and a low ponytail keep it monochrome for a day of shopping or a terrace lunch. When I fit frames, I check that the top edge sits near the brow line; frames riding well above the brows look borrowed.
28. Linen Pants And Crossbody Bag Errand Outfit

For errands, hands-free is everything. Olive or khaki pants with a drawstring waist, a navy and cream striped long-sleeve tee with the sleeves pushed up, and a cognac crossbody that warms up the cooler colors. White sneakers, a gold chain and a sporty watch round it out. Set the strap so the bag rests at hip height. Hanging at mid-thigh, it swings into everything and drags the tee to one side.
29. Linen Pants Vacation Outfit With Sandals

On holiday I want one outfit that runs from breakfast to sunset. Flowy cream linen pants with an elastic waist and a printed halter top in a fabric that never needs ironing. Flat T-strap sandals grip better than slides on cobblestones, which matters more than people expect. A short-handled straw circle bag, beaded drop earrings and a few thin rings. A halter leaves the shoulders and upper back exposed, so put sunscreen on before you dress. It packs small and photographs well.
30. Linen Pants Travel Outfit With Sneakers

Travel days are when I move to a linen blend, because pure linen creases deeply after hours in a seat. Black or navy blend trousers with an elastic waist, a grey long-sleeve tee and a knit wrap that doubles as a blanket on the plane. Cushioned white sneakers for long terminals, a nylon tote or backpack, and a cashmere scarf for a cold cabin. Keep jewelry to studs and a watch so security is quick. A blend with some cotton or viscose drapes like linen and arrives looking rested, not rumpled.
Pinning the Hem for Flats, Wedges and Sneakers
Linen pants nearly always need hemming, and the length should be set for one shoe, not all of them. Bring the pair you'll wear most to the tailor.
- Wide legs with sandals or wedges: the back about half an inch off the floor with the shoe on, the front just touching the top of the foot.
- Straight legs with sneakers or loafers: just clearing the shoe so a sliver of ankle shows.
- Cropped styles: at or just above the ankle bone. Ending at mid-calf shortens most legs.
- Ankle boots in autumn: a wide hem that skims the boot rather than breaking on top of it.
Wash before you hem. Pure linen can shrink a little the first time, so I have clients wash and dry a new pair once, then pin.
Living With the Creases
Linen will wrinkle. The aim is soft creases rather than sharp ones. Wash cool on a gentle cycle, skip the hot dryer, and hang the trousers by the hem while damp so their own weight pulls out most of the lines. A steamer handles the rest in a few minutes, and an iron on the linen setting works best while the fabric is still slightly damp. Dark linen fades in direct sun, so dry it in the shade and inside out.
Store linen loosely folded or hung by the waistband from clip hangers. Draped over a wire hanger, the fold at the knee sets in and is stubborn to steam out.
The Linen Pair I'd Buy First, and Why
If I could hand you only one pair to start, it would be high-waisted and straight or slightly wide, in navy or a mid-tone sand, hemmed for the shoes you wear most. That pair alone covers most of the thirty outfits here, from the chambray shirt to the blazer to the travel wrap. What ties them together is balance: volume below with something fitted above, a neutral base with one texture, a soft fabric with a shoe that has some structure. Wear the same pants three ways in one week and you'll learn quickly which tops you actually reach for. Then buy the second pair in the color you missed.
