A plain black skirt is the piece I'd want in hand if I had to make a costume by tomorrow. Pleated, fitted, tulle or floor length, it disappears into almost any character, and on November 1st it goes back into the closet as an ordinary skirt. The 30 ideas below are built on that one piece: classic Halloween characters, animals, storybook girls, a few glamorous looks and some that are tame enough for school or the office. Each one covers the top, shoes, hair, makeup and a prop, using things you probably own or can thrift. Most of my advice is about adding to the skirt without damaging it, and about tights and layers for warmth and coverage.

Adding Felt, Trim and Wings Without Ruining the Skirt
Every look below adds something to plain clothes: felt shapes, ribbon, wings, a tail. How you attach it decides whether you get the skirt and top back afterwards. These are the methods I use, from most removable to least.
- Safety pins from the inside. Best for tails, wings and anything heavy. Pin through a seam or the waistband, never the thin middle of the fabric, where the weight drags a hole.
- Basting stitches. Long, loose hand stitches in a contrasting thread hold felt and patches all night and pull out in seconds. This is my default for cotton, denim and knits.
- Removable fabric tape. Fine on smooth cotton for a few hours. It lets go on fuzzy knits and can leave residue on satin, so test a corner inside the hem first.
- Iron-on adhesive and fabric glue. Permanent, so keep these for pieces you're happy to give up. Never iron anything onto polyester tulle or satin without a pressing cloth; they melt.
- Hot glue. Fine on a hat or a cardboard prop, poor on fabric. It goes stiff, peels off in the cold and leaves a shiny patch you can't wash out.
Before anything goes on, I lay the outfit flat and mark positions with pins or chalk while I'm wearing it. Felt that looks centred on a hanger often sits too low once the skirt is on a body.
1. Classic Witch Costume With Black Maxi Skirt

For a witch, the long black maxi skirt is half the outline already. Put a fitted black blouse on top, ideally with bell sleeves, lace trim or a high neck, and add a light purple or emerald cape for colour. The pointed hat is what tells people who you are, so I buy the hat first and plan around it. Striped tights and buckled ankle boots keep it playful. Loose waves or a long black wig, smoky purple eyes and a small star drawn near one eye finish the face. Layer some costume jewellery and carry a short craft broom, because a full-length one is awkward in a classroom or a crowd.
2. Black Cat Costume With Pleated Black Skirt

The black cat is the costume I suggest when someone has an hour. A pleated black skirt, a fitted black turtleneck or bodysuit, opaque tights and flat ankle boots are the base. Then come the ears, a tail and fingerless gloves with felt claws. A clip-on tail pulls a light skirt down at the back, so I safety-pin it through the waistband instead of the skirt fabric. Hair can be down, in a high ponytail or under a short black wig. Draw a nose and whiskers with black eyeliner and add silver shimmer round the eyes. A choker with a small bell finishes it, and it's easy to wear at school or work.
3. Wednesday Addams Costume With Black Pleated Skirt

Wednesday Addams needs very little beyond a knee-length black pleated skirt, a crisp white collared shirt and a fitted black cardigan. Let the collar and cuffs sit out over the knit; I press the collar flat with a hot iron so it stays sharp, since a limp collar is the detail that makes this one look unfinished. Black tights, sturdy loafers and a small black satchel come next. Part the hair down the middle and plait two low, neat braids, or use a long black wig. Keep the makeup matte with pale foundation and a muted berry lip. Hold an old hardback book and keep a straight face. It's warm, and polished enough for an office.
4. Glam Vampire Costume With Black Satin Skirt

A black satin maxi skirt moves well, which suits a vampire who sweeps into a room. Top it with a burgundy velvet blouse or a lace-trimmed camisole, and add a black cape lined in deep red. Patterned tights and pointed ankle boots go underneath. Satin shows every needle hole and pin mark, so I attach nothing to the skirt itself and let the cape and jewellery do the decorating. Long glossy waves or a straight black wig with a sharp centre part suit the look. Cool-toned foundation, smoky eyes and dark red lipstick finish the face. Fangs are optional and come out for eating. A black folding fan is an easy prop.
5. Pirate Costume With Black High-Low Skirt

A ruffled black high-low skirt gives a pirate swing without buying a costume set. Wear it with a white peasant blouse and a fitted brown or burgundy vest. Tie a wide striped sash at the waist, then add patterned tights and knee-high boots you can walk in. Wrap a red scarf round your head over loose waves, and thread a few beads onto small braids. Bronze makeup, smudged liner and a berry lip are enough; heavy theatrical makeup is not needed. A foam spyglass, a coin pouch, clip-on hoops and layered necklaces are the props. I'd leave any realistic sword at home, as they're often banned at parties and schools.
6. Dark Fairy Costume With Black Tulle Skirt

A black tulle skirt turns into a dark fairy with a fitted plum, navy or forest-green top. A velvet corset-style belt shapes the waist; I choose one with elastic at the back, so you can still breathe and sit. Black tights and lace-up ballet flats or low ankle boots go on the feet. Light black wings with silver detail and a headband of fake leaves, stars and small flowers carry the theme. Loose curls, a braided crown or a long dark wig all suit it. Blend purple and silver shadow round the eyes and dot tiny stars at the temples. A short ribbon-wrapped wand or a battery lantern is the prop.
7. Dark Angel Costume With Black Tutu Skirt

A black tutu or full tulle skirt gives a dark angel shape and movement. Keep the rest plain, a black long-sleeve top, opaque tights and flat lace-up boots, so the wings are the focus. Feather-look black wings and a light black halo on a comfortable headband are the costume. Halos on wire wobble and droop by the end of the night, so I reinforce the wire stem with a second wire twisted round it. Soft curls, a sleek high ponytail or a neat bun all suit it. Silver eyeshadow, fine liner and a little cheek shimmer finish the face. Make sure the wings come off quickly for car rides and sitting down.
8. Skeleton Costume With Black Midi Skirt

A skeleton can be graphic and fun without being frightening. Start with a black midi skirt and a long-sleeve black top decorated with white felt bones, and carry the pattern down black tights or leggings. White sneakers or black combat boots both suit it. A bun or a short white wig keeps the contrast high. For the face, a white base, black round the eyes and simple lines at the mouth, kept clean and cartoon-like. White face paint cracks when it goes on thick, so I build it up in two thin layers and dust it with powder. Skeleton gloves and bone hair clips finish it. Separates make it easy to add warm layers for trick-or-treating.
9. Spider Queen Costume With Black Lace Skirt

A long black lace skirt sets an elegant tone for a spider queen. Pair it with a fitted black blouse with sheer sleeves or a faint web overlay, black tights, and pointed flats or low-heeled ankle boots. A high textured bun with a few small plastic spiders pinned in is the hair. Silver eyeshadow, winged liner and a fine web drawn near one temple make the face, with a dark berry lip. A light web cape, a silver crown and web earrings complete the queen. To decorate a black handbag, I wind white yarn into a web and tack it with a few stitches, which pull out cleanly afterwards. It works for family parties and the office.
10. Bat Costume With Black Skater Skirt

A black skater skirt is light and easy to move in, which is what a bat costume needs. Wear it with a fitted black sweater, opaque tights, and flat boots or black sneakers. Sew fabric wings from the sleeve to the back seam so they spread when you lift your arms. I cut them from a soft knit or felt rather than stiff vinyl, because soft wings fold when you sit and don't crackle. Add a headband with small pointed ears, and a sleek ponytail, low bun or short black wig. Grey and silver eye makeup and a tiny black nose keep the face cute. A crescent-moon necklace and a bat-decorated bucket finish it.
11. Gothic Doll Costume With Black Ruffle Skirt

A gothic doll needs a knee-length black ruffle skirt, a white puff-sleeve blouse and a fitted black vest. Striped or lace tights, round Mary Jane shoes and a big satin bow at the collar give it the doll shape. Two curled pigtails or a black bob wig with blunt bangs make the hair, and a lace bow headband adds a detail. For the face, round rosy cheeks, defined lashes, drawn lower lashes and a tiny heart lip. I'd add a stiff petticoat under the ruffle skirt if it falls flat; the doll look depends on that little bell shape. A small fabric doll, an old key or a mini book is the prop. It stays sweet enough for school events.
12. Black Swan Ballerina Costume With Tulle Skirt

A structured black tulle skirt can be the centre of a black swan ballerina. A fitted black leotard or long-sleeve top and black tights give coverage. Ballet flats with crisscrossed ribbons look right; I tie the ribbon ends and tuck them under the wrap so they can't trail and trip you. A smooth bun with a black feather headpiece or a small silver tiara finishes the hair. Winged black and silver eyes and a soft rose or berry lip make the face dramatic. Feather wrist cuffs and a jewelled collar add stage detail. Practise sitting in the skirt before the night, because a stiff tulle skirt can ride up when you sit down.
13. Victorian Ghost Costume With Black Maxi Skirt

A sweeping black maxi skirt gives a Victorian ghost the right old-fashioned silhouette. Pair it with a high-neck cream blouse, a fitted black jacket and a grey lace shawl. Black tights and low-heeled lace-up granny boots finish the period line. A loose updo with soft strands round the face, or a wavy silver-grey wig, works for the hair. Pale makeup, cool grey eyeshadow and a muted mauve lip give a faded look without any gore. A vintage frame, a closed parasol or a battery candle lantern is the prop. A cameo brooch and lace gloves set the era. I'd dull a bright cream blouse with a quick tea soak so it looks properly aged.
14. Steampunk Inventor Costume With Black Bustle Skirt

A black bustle or high-low skirt makes a good steampunk base. Add a cream blouse, a brown fitted vest and a wide utility belt, with striped tights and brown lace-up boots for walking. A mini top hat decorated with gears, ribbon and fake clock parts is the eye-catcher. Hot glue holds metal gears poorly once they get cold, so I use a strong craft adhesive or stitch them on through the hat band. Pinned curls, a braided updo or a copper wavy wig suit the look. Rest goggles on the hat, not over your eyes. Fill belt pouches with a notebook and a tape measure, and carry a foam wrench.
15. Ringmaster Costume With Black Circle Skirt

A full black circle skirt spins, which suits a ringmaster at the centre of a party. Pair it with a white button-down and a fitted red tailcoat trimmed with gold ribbon. A wide black belt marks the waist, and black tights with knee-high boots keep it practical. Defined curls, a low ponytail or a sleek bun go under a mini top hat. Bold liner and red lipstick give the stage face. White gloves, gold epaulettes and a microphone or rolled paper programme are the props, never a whip. I pin epaulettes onto the jacket from inside with large safety pins, so the jacket survives the costume.
16. Magician Costume With Black Pencil Skirt

For a magician, tuck a crisp white shirt into a black pencil skirt and add a fitted black tailcoat. Opaque tights and pointed flats or low block heels keep it neat. A red bow tie or satin neck ribbon gives a pop of colour. A smooth low bun or a sleek shoulder-length style sits under a light top hat. Defined liner, a red lip and a touch of silver shimmer finish the face. A foam wand and a white plush rabbit tucked into a bag or a small prop box make it clear. White gloves are the giveaway. Because it looks like smart evening wear, I'd suggest this one for an office party where full costumes feel like too much.
17. Scarecrow Costume With Black Denim Skirt

A black denim skirt gives a scarecrow a modern, closet-friendly twist. Add a plaid shirt, a brown vest and orange and yellow felt patches. On denim, I tack patches on with a running stitch in a contrasting thread, which looks properly homemade and pulls out in a minute afterwards. Black or brown tights and flat lace-up boots go underneath. Two loose braids or a messy low ponytail sit under a floppy straw hat. Peach blush, painted freckles and stitched lines at the mouth make a friendly face. Tie a bandana at the neck and add raffia at the cuffs, trimmed short so it won't scratch. It's a good pick for a pumpkin patch or a cool evening.
18. Bumblebee Costume With Black Tulle Skirt

A bumblebee is a black tulle skirt with a yellow-and-black striped sweater, and the stripes do all the work. Opaque black tights and yellow sneakers or black ankle boots finish the base. Light sheer wings should sit close to your back so they don't bump people. Add an antenna headband, and wear your hair in a high bun, two space buns or a short curly bob. Golden eyeshadow and a small yellow accent at each temple suit the face. A flower bracelet keeps your hands free. I sometimes wind a yellow ribbon through the skirt waistband to tie the colours together, which takes two minutes and needs no sewing.
19. Ladybug Costume With Black Skater Skirt

A ladybug uses a black skater skirt as the bottom half. Pair it with a red sweater or top decorated with black felt circles, black tights, and red flats, sneakers or low boots. Add rounded red wings with black spots and a simple antenna headband. A sleek ponytail, low pigtails or shoulder-length curls keep it tidy. Rosy blush, a red lip and small black dots at the outer eye corners finish the face. Felt dots stuck on with craft glue peel off a knit sweater within the hour, so I stitch round each one or use removable fabric tape. A fabric leaf, a mini watering can or a flower bag is the prop. Soft, bendable wings are kinder if you'll sit a lot.
20. Moon And Stars Costume With Black Maxi Skirt

A black maxi skirt makes a night sky with a navy or black top covered in silver star appliqués. Add a sheer cape scattered with moons and stars, black tights and silver flats or ankle boots. Soft waves with metallic star clips, or a deep-blue wig, finish the hair. Blend navy, silver and lavender shadow and paint tiny stars round one temple. A crescent headband or a light silver crown is the main accessory. Carry a small glowing orb made from a battery light, never a real candle near loose fabric. I iron star appliqués onto the cape through a pressing cloth on low heat, because sheer fabric melts fast. It suits school, the office or a dressier party.
21. Jack-O’-Lantern Costume With Black Pleated Skirt

A jack-o'-lantern is a black pleated skirt with an orange sweater wearing a friendly face cut from black felt. Striped orange-and-black tights and black sneakers or ankle boots finish the base. A high ponytail with an orange ribbon, or a shoulder-length orange wig, suits the hair. Copper eyeshadow, peach blush and small painted leaves at the temples finish the face. A green headband with a curled fabric stem turns your head into the top of the pumpkin; I wrap pipe cleaners in green felt for the stem so it holds a curl. A pumpkin treat bucket is the prop. It's bright and warm, and easy to adapt for school, work or a festival.
22. Medusa Costume With Black Draped Skirt

A long black draped skirt makes a strong base for Medusa. Wear it with an emerald top, a gold belt and a light black cape at the shoulders. Dark tights and gold flat sandals, or ankle boots on a cold night, go on the feet. Build a big updo and weave in small flexible toy snakes, or use a curly black wig. Toy snakes are heavier than they look, so I wire or pin them to a headband first and then pin the headband into the hair, which spreads the weight. Green and gold eyeshadow and a light scale pattern at the temples, done through a stencil, make the face. Gold cuffs and a wide collar necklace finish it.
23. Gothic Bride Costume With Black Lace Skirt

A gothic bride is a floor-length black lace skirt with a fitted black blouse and romantic sleeves. A velvet waistband, patterned tights and low lace-up boots go with it. The veil is the bridal clue; I keep it short and sew it to a floral headband with a few stitches, because a long veil gets stepped on. Loose curls, a soft updo or a long black wig suit the hair. Smoky grey eyes and a berry lip keep it elegant. Carry a bouquet of black, purple and silver fabric flowers. Lace gloves and a cameo necklace finish it. There is nothing graphic here, so it works at themed parties and in public.
24. Morticia Addams Costume With Black Maxi Skirt

Morticia Addams is a fitted black top and a narrow black maxi skirt. Choose a top with long flared sleeves, or tack sheer fabric to the cuffs to get her trailing line. Pointed black flats or low heels stay mostly hidden under the hem. A long straight black wig with a sharp centre part is the defining feature. Pale matte skin, arched brows and deep red lipstick finish the face. Long costume nails are optional. Carry a single fabric rose or a black fan. A narrow maxi limits your stride, so I'd open the back seam into a slit about knee height, or choose a stretch jersey skirt, before the night rather than at the party.
25. Cruella De Vil Costume With Black Pencil Skirt

A black pencil skirt anchors a Cruella De Vil with a white blouse, a fitted black jacket and red gloves. A faux-fur black-and-white stole goes round the shoulders; I tack a hidden loop of elastic under it so it can't slide off when you gesture. Black tights and red pointed flats or low heels go underneath. The half-black, half-white wig in a short, full shape is the signature. Sharp brows, grey eyeshadow and a vivid red lip finish the face. Oversized costume jewellery and a structured red bag add drama. A fashion sketchbook is a better prop than anything about puppies, and the result is a villain who isn't frightening.
26. Lydia Deetz Costume With Black Layered Skirt

A layered black midi skirt is a sensible base for Lydia Deetz and her moody, arty wardrobe. Pair it with a black lace blouse, a fitted blazer and opaque tights. Black lace-up boots or loafers are comfortable. The tousled black bob with short, choppy bangs is the hair, and a wig is easier than cutting your own. A pale complexion, soft grey eyeshadow, smudged liner and a muted berry lip finish the face. A vintage camera or a sketchbook makes the reference clear. A wide-brim black hat adds another layer. I'd steam the skirt layers apart before wearing, because tiered skirts crease flat in a drawer.
27. Punk Rocker Costume With Black Plaid Skirt

A black or black-and-red plaid skirt is an easy start for a punk rocker. Add a plain graphic tee with no visible branding, a faux-leather jacket and ripped black tights over opaque leggings if you want more coverage. Combat boots and a studded belt finish it; I look for flat, rounded studs so nobody gets scratched when dancing. A temporary coloured fauxhawk, a high ponytail or a short tousled wig all work for the hair. Smudged liner, dark nails and a bright pink or red lip suit the face. Clip-on ear cuffs and layered chains add hardware with no piercing needed. A toy microphone or a foam guitar is the prop.
28. 1980s Pop Star Costume With Black Mini Skirt

A black mini skirt gets a 1980s pop star treatment with bright leggings, an oversized off-the-shoulder sweatshirt and a wide neon belt. Leg warmers and high-top sneakers make it easy to dance in. Tease your hair into a high side ponytail, or wear a big curly wig with a bright scrunchie. Blue or purple eyeshadow and a glossy pink lip set the decade. Fingerless lace gloves, chunky plastic bangles and star clip-on earrings are the accessories, and a toy microphone makes the theme clear. To get the sweatshirt off one shoulder, I cut the neckband off and leave the raw edge, since knit won't fray. Opaque leggings make it fine for school.
29. Mime Costume With Black Suspender Skirt

A black suspender skirt and a black-and-white striped shirt make a simple mime. White socks or opaque black tights and black ballet flats go underneath. A red neck scarf adds a small spot of colour. A neat bun, short bob or low ponytail sits under a black beret. Use a light white base, black liner, rosy cheeks and a carefully shaped red lip, with thin black lines above the brows. I keep the white base sheer on the cheeks and stop it at the jaw, so it doesn't rub off on the collar. White gloves are the one thing you can't skip. Carry an empty picture frame and pose inside it for photos. It's cheap and quiet enough for work or school.
30. Spooky Librarian Costume With Black A-Line Skirt

A spooky librarian is a black A-line skirt with a cream bow-neck blouse and a fitted grey cardigan. Patterned tights, loafers and a narrow belt hung with key charms finish the base. A loose bun with wispy strands, or a softly curled grey wig, suits the hair. Cool neutral makeup, slightly smudged eyeshadow and a plum lip set the mood. Round glasses with clear lenses and a stack of light fake books are the props. Stretch fake cobweb pulls at knit fibres, so I pin small fabric cobwebs to the cardigan rather than pulling the stringy kind across it. A small clip light on one book adds a ghostly detail. It's modest and comfortable for teachers and book lovers.
When Your Skirt Is the Wrong Shape for the Character
You don't need to own six black skirts. A few quick sewist tricks change the shape you have into the one a character needs.
Too flat
A gothic doll, a fairy or a ringmaster needs fullness. Wear a tulle petticoat or a cheap net underskirt underneath, and gather it at the waist with elastic. Even an old tulle skirt worn under a plain A-line adds a surprising amount of body.
Too short or too long
For a witch or Morticia, layer a longer black skirt or a length of black jersey under a shorter one and let it show below the hem. To shorten, roll the waistband once or twice, or turn the hem up with iron-on hemming tape on cotton and safety pins on anything delicate.
Too plain
A steampunk bustle comes from a length of fabric gathered and pinned at the back waist. A high-low pirate hem can be faked with a scarf tied at one hip. Neither needs a single cut, so the skirt stays wearable.
The Skirt Goes Back in the Closet on November 1st
One black skirt can carry far more than one costume. Change the top, the outer layer, the shoes, the hair and makeup and the prop, and you can go from a witch to a ladybug, a ringmaster, a storybook doll or a spooky librarian. Wear the length you're comfortable in, and add tights or leggings for warmth and coverage. Light accessories and flat shoes make a long night much easier. Pick a character that suits you and your plans. My one rule is to attach everything so it comes off cleanly, and the skirt is back in your closet the next day, ready for next year.
