When I do a fall closet edit, I'm looking for layers that each do a job. A jacket you never take off at the office doesn't earn its spot. This season the pieces I keep reaching for are suede, barn jackets, loafers, relaxed denim, chocolate brown and burgundy, plus a few heritage layers. Below are thirty outfits built from them. Some are for the weekend, some for work, some for warm afternoons and some for properly cold mornings. Each one can shift with your shape, size and taste. Swap in your own colors and repeat pieces freely, because the best fall wardrobe is a small one you wear hard.

Mapping Thirty Outfits Back to About a Dozen Pieces
Read this list as a set of formulas, not a shopping list. In a closet edit, I group a client's fall clothes into three piles: toppers (jackets, coats, blazers, cardigans), middles (tees, knits, shirts, turtlenecks) and bottoms (jeans, trousers, skirts, leggings). Most of the outfits below use one piece from each pile, plus shoes.
Here's how much overlap there is:
- A trench appears in three different outfits here: over trousers, over a hoodie with leggings, and as a raincoat over jeans.
- Straight-leg jeans, in one wash or another, carry at least eight of the looks.
- Brown loafers go with almost everything here, from white jeans to plaid trousers to a satin skirt.
- A fitted turtleneck sits under a satin skirt, a cape, a corduroy blazer and a brown monochrome look.
So before you buy anything, lay out what you already own in those three piles and see which formulas are already complete. The gap is usually one topper, and that's the piece worth spending on.
1. Barn Jacket Fall Outfit With Straight-Leg Jeans

I size a barn jacket with a sweater on, not a tee, because that's how you'll wear it by November. Olive, tan, navy and chocolate all work. Underneath, a fitted white tee or cream ribbed knit keeps the boxy shape from swallowing you. Dark straight-leg jeans and brown riding boots or loafers keep it classic, with a structured crossbody and small gold earrings. If you're petite, a slightly cropped cut keeps your legs from looking short. For more coverage, a longer relaxed style over slim-straight denim does the job. It's my default for errands, markets and lunch.
2. Suede Jacket Fall Outfit With White Jeans

White jeans stay in rotation through fall if everything around them gets darker and heavier. I put a chocolate or camel suede jacket over a fitted black, burgundy or cream top, then choose the denim cut you like best: straight, barrel or wide. Brown suede loafers keep it tonal. Pointed ankle boots add height and warmth. A dark leather shoulder bag and a belt that matches the shoes pull the bright jeans into the season. When it gets colder, I swap the top for a fine turtleneck. One caution: white denim and suede both mark easily, so keep this pair for dry days.
3. Trench Coat Fall Outfit With Wide-Leg Trousers

The detail I fuss over with wide-leg trousers is the hem. It should almost touch the top of your shoe, and that means hemming them for the shoe you'll actually wear. Put a camel trench over a slim gray, black or ivory sweater, then add high-rise trousers with a fluid drape. Loafers keep it practical. Pointed ankle boots give more height under the long hem. A structured tote, a plain watch and small hoops finish it. If a full-length trench overwhelms your frame, a mid-thigh one does the same job. Curvier figures look longest with the coat left open.
4. Oversized Blazer Fall Outfit With Blue Jeans

An oversized blazer still has to fit at the shoulders. That's the one place I won't size up, because a seam hanging past the shoulder bone just looks too big, not oversized. Charcoal, brown, navy or a quiet plaid goes over a white tee or thin turtleneck, with straight or relaxed jeans. Loafers make it classic, and white sneakers when you'll be on your feet. A medium shoulder bag, slim belt and simple jewelry sharpen it up. Roll the sleeves once to take some bulk off the arms. It goes from a casual office to school pickup without changing a thing.
5. Leather Jacket Fall Outfit With Satin Midi Skirt

Leather and satin work together because one is stiff and one moves, so you don't need strong color. I start with a black, espresso or burgundy leather jacket over a fitted knit, then add a satin midi in champagne, olive, rust, navy or chocolate. Pointed ankle boots make it sleek, and loafers make it easier. Keep the bag compact and the jewelry fine so the texture contrast does the work. A cropped jacket shows your waist. A longer one needs a slimmer skirt underneath to stay balanced. Sheer tights and a soft scarf help on a cold evening. I'd wear it to dinner or a creative office.
6. Chunky Cardigan Fall Outfit With Midi Skirt

A chunky cardigan needs something with movement underneath or it starts to look like loungewear. Choose oatmeal, gray, burgundy, forest green or camel, and wear it buttoned as a top or open over a fitted tank. Add a midi skirt that swings: pleated, floral, denim or plain. Mary Janes keep it light. Knee-high boots are warmer. If you want a waist, tuck one front corner or add a slim belt, though thick knits can bunch under a belt. A leather bag and simple earrings finish it. Adjusting the cardigan length and the hem is how I fit this to different ages and builds.
7. Striped Sweater Fall Outfit With Baggy Jeans

Stripes stop baggy jeans from looking sloppy. I like cream and navy, brown and ivory, or burgundy and tan, ideally in a knit with a slightly dropped shoulder. Pair it with baggy or loose straight jeans in a medium or dark wash. Soft loafers add polish, and retro sneakers make it sportier. Tuck the front of the sweater partway so the waistband shows. Without that, two loose pieces turn into one shapeless block. A brown belt, roomy tote and sunglasses finish it. If oversized feels like too much, go for jeans with a fitted waist and a sweater that stops at the hip.
8. Denim Jacket Fall Outfit With Knit Midi Dress

A ribbed knit midi dress is a thin base, so it layers under a jacket without bulk. Black, taupe, olive, burgundy or heather gray all pair well with a medium or dark denim jacket. A cropped jacket shows your waist. An oversized one makes it more casual. White leather sneakers suit mild days, and ankle boots suit cold ones. Add a crossbody and a light scarf for color near your face. I look for a dress that skims rather than clings. Ribbed knit grips anything underneath and shows every line. A belt under the jacket adds shape if you want it. Good for travel, shopping and family days.
9. Utility Jacket Fall Outfit With Cargo Pants

Utility pieces can tip into costume quickly, so I keep the colors coordinated. An olive, khaki or brown utility jacket goes over a cream or black fitted top, with cargo pants in a contrasting neutral such as stone, charcoal or deep brown. A tapered or straight leg balances the big pockets. Minimal sneakers, lace-up boots or chunky loafers all work, with a sleek crossbody and small hoops to soften it. Stiff cotton cargos add width at the thigh. If you want a softer line, look for a drapier fabric. Keep the top tucked or cropped so your waist stays visible. It's built for busy days outside.
10. Bomber Jacket Fall Outfit With Tailored Trousers

A bomber looks smart once you put it with real tailoring. Choose leather, suede, nylon or wool blend in black, olive, navy or chocolate, over a fitted crew neck or fine sweater. Add pleated trousers with a straight or wide leg in gray, cream or a matching neutral. Sleek sneakers keep it modern. Loafers make it office-ready. A structured tote and a belt connect the top and bottom. Bombers finish at the waistband, which is why I pair a slightly cropped one with high-rise pants. The two lines meet cleanly instead of leaving a strip of sweater in between.
11. Sweater Dress Fall Outfit With Knee-High Boots

On a cold morning, a sweater dress is one decision instead of three. Pick a ribbed or smooth knit with the hem wherever suits you: above, at or below the knee. Chocolate, charcoal, cream, burgundy and dark green are the easiest fall colors. Add flat, block or low-heeled knee boots in leather or suede, then a long wool coat for a clean vertical line. A structured bag, simple earrings and an optional belt finish it. If you'd rather not mark the waist, let the dress hang and wear the coat open. On cold days, tights mean you don't need to change the dress.
12. Turtleneck Fall Outfit With Satin Skirt

A fitted turtleneck tucked into a satin skirt gives you warmth on top and movement below. Pick a black, cream, camel or burgundy knit and a midi in a related fall shade. Chocolate with ivory is quiet. Burgundy with soft gray has more contrast. Pointed boots or heeled loafers lengthen the line of the skirt, and a tailored coat, small shoulder bag and fine gold jewelry finish it. Tuck the knit fully into a high-rise waistband. If clingy fabrics bother you, a relaxed light sweater over a bias-cut skirt hangs more softly, since bias satin falls away from the body rather than sticking to it.
13. Sweater Vest Fall Outfit With Button-Down Shirt

A sweater vest over a button-down is preppy, so I loosen it up with relaxed shapes. Start with a crisp white or pale blue shirt and a solid, striped or argyle vest, then tailored trousers or dark straight jeans. Loafers with a bit of sock showing lean academic. Pointed flats are lighter. A structured tote, slim watch and studs finish it. Leave the shirt untucked to keep it casual, or tuck into high-rise pants for a defined waist. If you have a fuller bust, a longer V-neck vest in a softer knit sits better than a short crew neck, which can pull across the chest.
14. Monochrome Brown Fall Outfit With Wide-Leg Pants

Several browns together look richer than one, and they don't need to match. I start with an espresso or cocoa turtleneck, add camel, chestnut or chocolate wide-leg trousers, then a suede jacket, long coat or relaxed blazer. Dark brown loafers or pointed boots and a matching leather bag ground it, and gold jewelry brightens it. All-dark brown can feel heavy, so I put one lighter shade near the face, or a cream scarf. Changing the texture helps more than you'd expect. Wool, suede, leather and rib each catch light differently, and that's what separates the pieces in photos.
15. Burgundy Sweater Fall Outfit With Olive Pants

Burgundy and olive sit on opposite sides of the color wheel, which is why they look rich together without clashing. Wear a soft burgundy crew neck, cardigan or turtleneck with olive tailored trousers or straight cargos. Brown loafers keep it classic, and cream sneakers make it casual. A camel coat or dark brown jacket goes on top when needed. A cognac bag links the warm tones. If the sweater has visible texture, keep jewelry minimal. If two deep shades feel heavy on you, put an ivory shirt underneath with the collar showing to break them up.
16. Plaid Blazer Fall Outfit With Dark-Wash Jeans

With a plaid blazer, I pull the rest of the outfit from colors already in the check. Look for brown, gray, navy, burgundy or camel in the pattern, and wear it over a plain crew-neck sweater or fitted tee with dark straight jeans. Leather ankle boots look sleek, and loafers look relaxed. Pick a top-handle bag or tote in one of the plaid's shades. I wouldn't add a second pattern unless you really enjoy a busier look. A hip-length blazer gives coverage, and a cropped one pairs well with high-rise denim. It works for meetings, lunch, travel and city days.
17. Shacket Fall Outfit With Leggings

The difference between leggings that look dressed and leggings that look like the couch is the outer layer. I choose a shacket in plaid, camel, olive or charcoal that ends around the upper thigh, with enough weight to hold its own shape. Wear it over a fitted long-sleeve tee, light sweater or simple hoodie. Black leggings give a slim base, and flared leggings are softer and more current. Chelsea boots or clean sneakers depend on the weather, plus a crossbody and a cap or beanie. Keeping the base one color makes your legs look longer under the jacket.
18. Wool Coat Fall Outfit With Hoodie And Jeans

A tailored wool coat over a hoodie works because each piece makes the other look less obvious. Start with a plain hoodie in gray, cream, navy or burgundy, and pull the hood out over a camel, charcoal or black coat. Straight, baggy or slim-straight jeans and retro sneakers keep it relaxed, with a tote or crossbody. The hoodie has to be thin. A thick fleece one bunches at the armholes and strains the coat buttons. Jeans and shoes in similar colors make you look taller. If you're petite, a coat that stops above the knee balances better.
19. Quilted Vest Fall Outfit With Flannel Shirt

A quilted vest keeps your core warm and still lets the flannel show at the arms and collar. Choose olive, navy, rust or brown over a plaid flannel, with straight blue jeans and weather-ready ankle boots. Add a cream thermal underneath when the temperature drops, and finish with a leather crossbody and a knit cap. Zip the vest up when you try it on. If it pulls across the chest over the flannel, go up a size. Some vests have light shaping at the waist, which helps if you want definition. Dark denim makes it neater, and faded jeans make it more country.
20. Trench Coat Fall Outfit With Hoodie And Leggings

A light trench over a hoodie and leggings is how I'd dress for a travel day when it might rain. Start with a fitted hoodie or crew sweatshirt and black leggings, then add a camel, olive, navy or stone trench for length. White sneakers keep it fresh. Chunky Chelsea boots handle cold, wet days. Carry a roomy tote and add a cap. The hoodie needs to be thin enough to sit flat under the coat. If regular leggings feel too casual, ponte has a thicker, smoother finish that looks closer to trousers. Leave the trench open for a strong vertical line.
21. Corduroy Blazer Fall Outfit With Denim Skirt

A corduroy blazer adds warmth and texture to plain denim. Pick camel, rust, chocolate, burgundy or forest green over a fitted turtleneck or long-sleeve tee, then a knee-length or midi denim skirt with a front slit so you can walk properly. Knee boots carry a continuous line under the skirt. Loafers and tights read preppy. Fine-wale corduroy looks dressier, and wide wale looks more vintage. One check I always make: the jacket hem and the skirt hem shouldn't end at the same height, or the two pieces look like they're fighting each other.
22. Peacoat Fall Outfit With Cropped Trousers

A navy or black peacoat makes cropped trousers look sharp. Wear it over a striped knit, cream turtleneck or light blue button-down, with ankle-length trousers in charcoal, camel, navy or a quiet plaid. Loafers let a little ankle show. On colder days, dark socks or tights cover it. A structured tote and a printed silk scarf finish the look. Peacoats are double-breasted, so they're unforgiving if they're too tight. I test one by buttoning it over the thickest sweater I plan to wear. Straight cropped pants give room without extra volume, which suits most figures.
23. Maxi Coat Fall Outfit With White Jeans

A long dark coat gives white jeans a fall look straight away. I choose camel, charcoal, navy, burgundy or chocolate over a light neutral sweater, then straight or barrel white jeans for contrast. Burgundy or brown loafers add color, and pointed ankle boots give more coverage. Match the bag to the shoes. The coat already has a lot of volume, so the sweater should be slim. If you're petite, end the coat at mid-calf instead of the ankle. Full length on a shorter frame looks like a bathrobe. The white denim stops the whole outfit from looking too dark.
24. Cape Fall Outfit With Turtleneck And Slim Pants

A cape covers your shoulders but not your arms, so I always put a warm base under it. Wear a camel, gray, plaid or deep burgundy cape over a fitted turtleneck with slim-straight pants or structured leggings to balance the volume. Knee-high boots keep the lower half slim and warm. A top-handle bag, leather gloves and small earrings finish it. A heavily patterned cape needs solid, plain everything else. Shorter women do best with a hip-length cape. Taller women can wear a longer, fuller one. Bags with long straps don't sit well under a cape, which is why a top handle works better here.
25. Raincoat Fall Outfit With Sweater And Jeans

For rain, I'd pick a water-resistant trench or hooded raincoat in olive, navy, tan or a brighter fall color, over a striped sweater or light turtleneck with straight cropped jeans. Waterproof Chelsea boots keep it neat. Carry a zipped crossbody that fits under the coat when it really pours, plus a compact umbrella and studs. Skip long hems. Denim wicks water up from the ankle and stays cold for hours. Dark washes hide splashes better than pale ones. Thin wool socks inside the boots stay warm even if they get a bit damp, unlike cotton.
26. Cardigan Fall Work Outfit With Tailored Pants

A cardigan looks professional when it's a fine knit, not a chunky one. I choose burgundy, navy, gray, camel or cream, buttoned as a top or over a matching camisole, with high-rise tailored pants in a straight or wide leg. Loafers, slingbacks or low block heels all work, with a structured work tote and quiet jewelry. Tuck the front for a waist, or pick a cropped length. A longer cardigan left open over one solid color makes you look taller. Fine-gauge knits pill at the underarms and cuffs, so a sweater shaver earns its place if you wear this weekly.
27. Rugby Shirt Fall Outfit With Relaxed Jeans

A striped rugby shirt has a heavy cotton and a sturdy collar that hold up to a lot of wear. Choose burgundy and cream, green and navy, or brown and blue, with relaxed straight jeans. Let it hang or tuck the front a little. Suede sneakers, boat shoes or loafers keep it collegiate. Add a barn jacket and a canvas or leather tote. Rugby shirts are boxy, so jeans that fit firmly at the waist keep the outfit from going shapeless. Rolling the sleeves to show your wrists makes it look lighter. Easy for campus, weekend trips and errands.
28. Faux Leather Pants Fall Outfit With Oversized Sweater

Faux leather pants and a soft oversized sweater give you a smooth fabric against a fuzzy one. Choose a straight, tapered or wide leg in black, espresso or deep burgundy, with a cream, gray, camel or muted green knit. Let the sweater fall, or tuck the front loosely. Pointed ankle boots dress it up, and minimal sneakers dress it down. Keep the bag structured and the jewelry simple. A matte finish looks less shiny and wears better. High-gloss faux leather tends to crease at the knee and crack over time. A longer sweater covers more, and a cropped one suits high-rise pants.
29. Flannel Shirt Fall Outfit With Black Jeans

Black jeans make a loud plaid look calmer. Pick flannel in rust, green, navy, burgundy or brown and wear it buttoned over a fitted tank, or open like a light jacket, with straight or slim black jeans. Combat boots make it rugged, loafers make it neat, and sneakers keep it easy. A black crossbody ties the lower half together. On cold days, add a quilted vest or wool coat. Thick flannel bulks up under a coat, so if that bothers you, a brushed cotton shirt with a softer drape gives the same look in a thinner layer.
30. Knit Set Fall Outfit With Long Coat

A matching knit set looks planned in a way two separate soft pieces never do. Choose a sweater and pants, or a knit top and midi skirt, in taupe, gray, chocolate, navy or cream, and put a long structured coat over it. Leather sneakers keep it relaxed, and loafers or ankle boots dress it up. Add a structured tote, a simple necklace and slim sunglasses. Feel the knit before you buy. A thin one shows every line underneath, and a thick one gets bulky. Shoes close to the set's color carry the line down to the floor.
Rain, Pilling and Cracking: Looking After These Fabrics
Half of these outfits rely on fabrics that need a little care to last more than one season. These are the habits I teach anyone who's just bought their first proper fall pieces.
Suede
Brush it with a suede brush after wearing, in one direction, to lift the nap. A protective spray before the first wear helps, but it is not waterproofing. If suede gets soaked, blot it, stuff it with paper and let it dry at room temperature, never on a radiator, or it goes stiff. Then brush it again.
Wool coats and knits
Wool doesn't need washing often. Airing it overnight on a wide hanger removes most smells. Pilling shows up where fabric rubs: under the arms, at the sides where a bag strap sits, and on the cuffs. A fabric shaver or sweater comb takes it off in a few minutes. Store knits folded, because hangers stretch the shoulders out of shape.
Faux leather
Wipe it with a damp cloth and keep it away from direct heat. Most faux leather is a coating on fabric, and over time that coating can peel or crack, especially at the knees and seat. Hanging the pants by the waistband rather than folding them sharply slows that down.
White denim
Treat marks the same day. Wash white jeans inside out with whites only, and skip fabric softener, which can leave denim looking dingy. A single stray dark sock in the load will tint them gray.
Fewer Layers, Worn More Often
A good fall wardrobe isn't a big one. It's a few layers, some comfortable bottoms, shoes you can walk in and a handful of fall colors that all work together. The outfits above cover work, weekends, warm afternoons and cold mornings. Start with the ones that match your actual week, then change colors, hems and proportions to suit your body. Wearing the same jacket, jeans or boots several times a week isn't a failure. It's the whole point of a wardrobe that works. Layer with intention, add a few good accessories, and getting dressed gets quicker.
