DC's women give you more range than most people expect: caped heroes, Gotham antiheroes, a stage magician, cosmic champions and a few favorites from the animated shows. I've styled thirty of them as full looks, each with the clothing base, hair, makeup, accessories and shoes you'd need. You can buy a ready-made suit, but most of these come together from thrift finds and pieces already in your closet once the colors are right. Every look can be made fitted or relaxed, more covered or less, and in any size, without losing what makes the character readable. Here's how I'd put each one together.

Adapting a Comic Suit to the Coverage You Want
Comic costumes are drawn on impossible bodies in very little fabric. In real life you decide how much skin shows and how close the fit is, and the character still reads as long as the colors and signature pieces stay put. These are the adjustments I make most often.
- Swap the bodysuit for separates. A fitted top and leggings in the same color read as one piece from a few feet away, and you can use the bathroom without undressing.
- Lengthen with layers rather than new garments. Opaque tights under shorts, leggings under a skirt or a long-sleeve tee under a sleeveless top keep the color story and add warmth.
- Place color-block lines on your body, not on the hanger. Try the base on, mark with pins where panels and seams should fall, and move them until they sit where you want them.
- Buy stretch pieces in the size that lies flat without strain. Stretch fabric pulled too tight goes shiny and see-through, and printed patterns fade where they stretch.
- Scale the emblem to you. A chest symbol that's too small disappears on a larger frame, and one that's too big swamps a petite one, so cut a paper version first and pin it on.
1. Wonder Woman Costume With Warrior Armor

Wonder Woman reads from her red, blue and gold before anyone notices the details. Start with a red fitted top with a gold eagle-style detail, then add a blue pleated skirt, or shorts over opaque tights. Gold wrist cuffs, a wide metallic belt and a pointed gold tiara give the armored feel. Tiaras slide around on long wigs, so I pin the band through to the wig cap with two bobby pins on each side. Wear a long dark brown wig in loose waves or give your own hair plenty of volume, with defined brows, neutral shadow, rosy cheeks and a classic red lip. Red knee-high boots are traditional, but flat red boots make a long event far easier. Keep any armor pieces in foam or fabric so the whole thing stays light.
2. Classic Harley Quinn Jester Costume

The jester Harley is playful and needs nothing complicated. A red-and-black color-blocked jumpsuit is the simplest base, or pair a fitted black top with red leggings and contrasting sleeves. When you split the colors across separates, check the result in a mirror. The red and black should swap sides at your center front; if they don't, the harlequin effect turns into a random two-tone outfit. Add the soft jester hood with black and red points, a white ruffled collar and matching cuffs. Light pale foundation, a black eye mask, bright red lipstick and soft lashes handle the face. A small diamond-print purse is the only prop she needs, and black ankle boots or red-and-black sneakers keep you comfortable all evening.
3. Catwoman Costume With Black Catsuit

Catwoman comes straight out of the black things in your closet. A long-sleeve black jumpsuit is the simplest base, though a fitted top with faux-leather leggings gives more shine. Faux leather gets hot fast, so I'd only choose it for a cool evening or an outdoor party. Add a black belt, elbow-length gloves and a flexible cat-ear headband, plus a small black crossbody bag as a nod to the jewel thief. A smooth low ponytail or a short black wig sits neatly beneath the ears. Winged liner, smoky gray shadow and a neutral lip give the sharp eye. Go for flat knee-high boots or supportive ankle boots over high heels, especially in a crowd.
4. Poison Ivy Costume With Leafy Green Dress

Poison Ivy is rich green fabric and trailing leaves. Begin with a green dress or jumpsuit, or a fitted top with a flowing skirt, and attach artificial ivy around the neckline, waist and cuffs with removable fabric tape or a few careful stitches. Choose soft fabric leaves. The stiff plastic kind has sharp edges that scratch your neck and crackle every time you sit down. A long red wig in soft waves, with tiny leaf clips scattered through it, goes with green shadow, defined lashes, peach blush and berry-red lipstick. Carry a small vine-covered purse instead of a big prop. Green tights add coverage, and green or brown ankle boots keep the look grounded.
5. Batgirl Costume With Purple Cape

This purple Batgirl balances bright comic color with a practical shape. Start with a purple jumpsuit, or a long-sleeve top with matching leggings, and add a yellow utility-style belt, a flexible eye mask and a lightweight cape that ends above the ankles. Yellow gloves and flat yellow boots give the contrast. Yellow is unforgiving, though: a lemon shade next to a mustard one clashes badly, so I buy the gloves, belt and boots together and hold them side by side in daylight. Wear a long red wig in loose curls, or let your own red or brown hair fall beneath a soft bat-eared hood, with plum shadow, black liner, pink blush and a muted lip. A small yellow belt bag holds your essentials, and stretch fabric lets you dance.
6. Batwoman Costume With Red Wig And Cape

Batwoman is all about black-and-red contrast. Wear a matte black jumpsuit, or a fitted top with reinforced leggings, then add a red bat emblem, a red utility belt, black gloves and a black cape lined in bright red. The long vivid red wig is her most recognizable detail, so it has to come out of the cowl properly. With a soft cowl, I cut a small slit at the back and pull the wig through, otherwise the hair gets flattened and hidden. Cool-toned foundation, sculpted brows, smoky eyes and deep red lipstick give her confidence. Black knee-high boots with red laces finish the outfit. Keep the cape at calf length or shorter, and choose foam over rigid armor if you'll wear it all night.
7. Supergirl Costume With Red Cape

Supergirl is cheerful primary color with very little fuss. Choose a royal blue dress or skater skirt set, or a long-sleeve top with leggings, and add the red-and-yellow shield on the chest, a short red cape and a gold belt. Red or opaque nude tights add warmth and coverage. Style a long blonde wig in soft waves with a side part. Bright blonde synthetic fiber can look plastic-shiny under indoor lights, and a quick brush of translucent powder through the lengths takes that down. Natural makeup, peach blush, defined lashes and a rosy lip suit her optimism. Red boot covers over flat shoes, or supportive red sneakers, finish it, and the cape should stop around the hips or knees in a busy room.
8. Black Canary Costume With Leather Jacket

Black Canary is closer to a street outfit than a uniform. Layer a cropped black faux-leather jacket over a black fitted bodysuit or tank dress, then add opaque fishnet-pattern tights over black leggings, fingerless gloves and a slim black belt. A shoulder-length blonde wig with tousled waves gives her the signature finish. Tousled is actually easier than smooth here, because a cheap wig that frizzes a little just looks deliberate. Smoky eyes, winged liner, soft contour and nude or red lipstick handle the face. Black combat boots suit the tough look and stay comfortable for hours. For more coverage, swap shorts for a black mini skirt over leggings, and add a microphone-shaped purse charm to hint at her voice.
9. Raven Costume With Purple Hooded Cape

Raven suits anyone who prefers dark colors and relaxed layers. Start with a long-sleeve black or navy bodysuit or tunic over opaque leggings, and add a deep purple hooded cape, a wide gold belt and round red gems at the neckline and waist. The wig is straight, violet-black and about shoulder length, center-parted with softly angled ends. If the wig comes too long, trim it on a head form, cutting up into the ends at an angle rather than straight across so it doesn't look chopped. Lavender shadow, clean black liner, cool pink blush and muted plum lips handle the face, and a small red gemstone pendant finishes it. Low-heeled ankle boots give you stability, and a shortened, lightweight cape keeps clear of the floor.
10. Starfire Costume With Purple Outfit

Starfire's purple and her vivid red hair are what people see first. Wear a metallic purple crop top and skirt over opaque tights, or a full-coverage purple jumpsuit with silver panels, and add silver arm cuffs, a metallic belt and green gem accents at the neckline. The long, wavy red-orange wig is essential. Her orange skin is optional. If you try it, use body makeup made for skin, apply it thinly to the face and arms, and check that it doesn't rub off onto the purple fabric before you commit to the whole look. Green shadow, glowing highlighter, defined lashes and coral lips finish the face. Purple knee-high boots or flat silver boots complete the color story, and breathable metallic knits beat heavy vinyl at a warm party.
11. Zatanna Costume With Tuxedo Jacket

Zatanna is stage-magician glamour, and nearly all of it can be found secondhand. A fitted black tuxedo jacket goes over a white button-front shirt or corset-style top, with black shorts or a pleated skirt over opaque tights. A red bow tie, white gloves and a small black top hat create the performance look. Pin the mini hat toward one side at a slight tilt; perched dead center it looks like a party favor. Long black hair in glossy waves, crisp liner, silver shadow, rosy cheeks and a rich red lip suit the stage. Carry a mini top-hat purse or a light foam wand, and wear black knee-high boots instead of heels. Thrifted tuxedo jackets are usually cut straight, so I take in the side seams at the waist; that sharper shape is what makes her read.
12. Mera Costume With Green Scale Jumpsuit

Mera looks sophisticated when the metallic texture is balanced with comfortable pieces. Begin with an emerald jumpsuit or fitted maxi dress with a subtle scale print, or a matching top and leggings, then add a gold belt, textured wrist cuffs and a small gold crown or pointed headpiece. A long red wig in loose, flowing waves gives movement around the shoulders. Sea-green shadow, luminous highlighter, soft brows and coral lips handle the face. Green ankle boots or gold flats finish it, and a shell-shaped clutch replaces any large prop. Printed scales on stretch fabric move far better than molded armor. Stretch the fabric over your hand in the shop, though, because on cheaper prints the pattern turns pale where it pulls tight across the hips.
13. Hawkgirl Costume With Wings

Hawkgirl gets her whole shape from the wings. Wear a dark green fitted top with brown leggings, or a knee-length skirt over tights, then add a gold waist belt, brown wrist guards and a soft yellow bird-style helmet that leaves your face clear. Lightweight feather-style wings should attach with comfortable backpack straps and stay narrow enough for doorways. Look at the straps before you buy. Wings hung from shoulder loops alone tip backward and pull the straps into your neck, while a strap across the chest keeps them upright. Brown or auburn waves go beneath the headpiece, with bronze shadow, strong brows, warm blush and a neutral lip. Brown knee-high boots finish the warrior look, and foldable fabric wings make the car ride far easier.
14. Huntress Costume With Purple Cape

Huntress is purple, black and white. Start with a black fitted top and leggings and add a white chest panel, or a simple cross shape in fabric trim. Layer on a short purple cape with a structured collar, a purple utility belt and a matching eye mask. A cape collar droops by the end of the night unless it has some support, so I'd sew a layer of heavy interfacing between the collar pieces; it holds the stand-up shape without feeling stiff. Wear long black curls, or pull your own dark hair back from the face. Deep purple shadow, precise liner, defined brows and berry lipstick make a bold but wearable face. Combat boots, a purple belt bag and fingerless gloves stand in for her usual gear and keep it safe to wear in public.
15. Power Girl Costume With White Bodysuit

Power Girl starts from a crisp white base with red, blue and gold accents. Choose a white long-sleeve jumpsuit or a fitted white top with white leggings, and add a red cape fastened at one shoulder, a wide gold belt and blue gloves. For the famous chest detail, apply a pale blue oval panel instead of cutting an opening in the garment. White is the hardest color in this list to wear. Thin white knits show everything, so double the fabric or choose a thicker knit, and get your makeup done before you step into it. A short blonde bob with soft volume and a side part, plus blue-gray shadow, rosy blush, black mascara and a red lip, finish the head. Red or blue knee-high boots complete the palette.
16. Vixen Costume With Orange Jumpsuit

Vixen gives you bold color without any cape or headpiece. Wear an orange or golden-brown jumpsuit with black side panels, or a fitted orange top with matching leggings, then add a black waist belt, gold wrist cuffs and an animal-inspired statement necklace. That necklace is her central piece, so I choose it first and match the orange to it rather than the other way round. Wear dark hair the way you like it best, from natural volume to braids or a sleek high ponytail. Bronze shadow, glowing skin, defined lashes and warm red lips suit the palette, and black knee-high boots streamline it. A little animal-print trim at the collar or cuffs strengthens the theme, but keep it to one or two spots so the outfit doesn't get crowded.
17. Bumblebee Costume With Yellow Wings

Bumblebee is a bright yellow transformation with black details. Begin with a yellow fitted dress or jumpsuit, or an athletic top with black leggings, then add a black waist panel, yellow gloves and lightweight translucent wings on hidden shoulder straps. A yellow-and-black headband suggests her helmet without the bulk. Dark hair can go in a rounded natural shape, a curly bob or braids. Gold shadow, sharp liner, peach blush and glossy neutral lips handle the face, and yellow ankle boots or black sneakers with yellow laces finish it. Keep the wings compact and slightly curved so they show without bumping people or door frames. Wings made from film or cellophane crease for good if they're crushed, so lay them on top of everything in the car.
18. Katana Costume With Red Face Mask

Katana stays sharp and recognizable with no weapons at all. Start with a fitted black jumpsuit, or a long-sleeve top with black cargo pants, and layer a white cropped vest or sleeveless jacket over it with red trim, a wide red belt and black wrist guards. The wig is straight, black and about shoulder length, ideally with blunt bangs. The white half-mask with a simple red circle is her defining piece. Before painting the circle, trace around a glass or jar lid so it comes out truly round, because a freehand circle on white shows every wobble. Keep the makeup minimal beneath it with matte foundation, black liner and a soft red lip. Black combat boots or flexible martial-arts-style shoes make it comfortable for a long night out.
19. Talia Al Ghul Costume With Green Cape

Talia al Ghul is elegant layers with a villain's poise. Wear a fitted dark green jumpsuit, a long tunic over black leggings, or a floor-length green dress with side slits for movement. Add a black waist belt, structured shoulder details, gold cuffs and a lightweight forest-green cape. A long dress and a cape together put a lot of fabric around your feet, so I hem the dress to just clear the top of the boot. Smooth long dark waves or a sleek low ponytail work for the hair, with defined brows, smoky olive shadow, subtle contour and deep berry lips. Black knee-high boots keep it grounded, and a gold pendant or emerald-toned ring is the finishing detail. Flexible fabric beats rigid armor for walking and sitting.
20. Lois Lane Reporter Costume

Not every DC costume needs a cape or a bodysuit. Lois Lane is a tailored blazer over a crisp button-front blouse, with straight-leg trousers or a knee-length pencil skirt and loafers or polished ankle boots you can walk in. Style brown hair in a glossy shoulder-length blowout or soft waves, using a brunette wig if needed, and keep the makeup natural with defined brows, subtle liner, rosy blush and a muted red lip. The props carry this one, because the clothes alone just look like a work outfit. A reporter's notebook, a press-style badge, a pen, a practical shoulder bag and a folded newspaper with a made-up headline make the character clear. Never use real media credentials, especially at public events or professional venues.
21. Death Costume With Black Goth Outfit

Death of the Endless is the understated pick. Wear a fitted black tank or long-sleeve shirt with black jeans, a flowing maxi skirt or opaque leggings, then add a silver ankh necklace, stacked bracelets and black leather-look ankle boots. A short black wig with tousled layers gives the casual goth shape. Keep the foundation pale but natural, with heavy black liner, dark lashes, plum or burgundy lips and the small curled mark beside one eye. I draw that curl with a liquid liner pen and let it dry fully before setting it, because a softer liner smudges into a blob the first time you laugh. A black belt bag keeps your things close. On a cold night, a black cardigan or cropped jacket goes on top without hiding who she is.
22. Dreamer Costume With Blue Bodysuit

Dreamer is futuristic deep blue, turquoise and silver. Start with a navy or royal blue jumpsuit, or a fitted blue top with matching leggings, then add turquoise shoulder panels, silver piping, a metallic belt and long blue gloves. A sleek black wig with a subtle blue streak frames the face, and a soft silver eye mask completes the hero identity. Use shimmering blue shadow, precise liner, luminous highlighter and a pink-nude lip. Blue knee-high boots or silver ankle boots finish it. Reflective tape makes clean geometric lines quickly. Measure and chalk the lines on both sides before any tape goes down, since one slightly crooked side looks obvious next to a straight one.
23. Stargirl Costume With Blue Star Top

Stargirl is youthful, patriotic and easy to build from dancewear. A fitted royal blue top with one large white star goes with blue shorts or a pleated skirt scattered with smaller white stars, plus opaque blue tights underneath for warmth. Red gloves, a red belt and red knee-high boots bring the contrast. I cut all the small stars from one card template so they match, then space them by eye instead of in rows; a neat grid looks like a flag print rather than a costume. A long blonde high ponytail or loose curls goes with blue shadow, clean liner, pink blush and cheerful red lips. A gold star crossbody bag or hair clip replaces the staff, and stretch fabric keeps her comfortable in group photos.
24. Jessica Cruz Green Lantern Costume

Jessica Cruz's Green Lantern look centers on a bold green-and-black uniform. A fitted green jumpsuit with black sleeves and side panels, or a green athletic top with black leggings, gets a white circular lantern emblem in removable fabric vinyl. Add green gloves, a green eye mask and a glowing costume ring. Long dark brown waves, or a ponytail that keeps the mask in view, go with emerald shadow, winged liner, warm blush and a natural lip. Black knee-high boots streamline the bottom half. Small battery-powered green lights can be clipped around the belt. I tuck the battery packs inside a belt pouch so nothing dangles, and skip anything with long wires that could catch on a door handle.
25. Star Sapphire Costume With Violet Bodysuit

Star Sapphire is for anyone drawn to rich pink and violet. Wear a violet jumpsuit, or a fitted dress over leggings, with black side panels, then add a metallic silver belt, purple gloves and a pale pink star-shaped emblem on the chest. A small violet tiara or forehead gem reinforces the cosmic theme. Attach a forehead gem with a skin-safe adhesive after a patch test, and keep highlighter off that spot, because a slick base is what makes gems slide. Style long dark hair in glossy waves, with shimmering lavender shadow, bold lashes, radiant highlighter and berry-pink lips. Purple knee-high boots or silver ankle boots finish it, along with a small iridescent clutch. A few metallic accents on matte stretch fabric add depth without weight.
26. Cheetah Costume With Animal Print Bodysuit

Cheetah is spotted fabric, feline makeup and earthy color. Choose a full-coverage tan jumpsuit with dark brown spots, or a printed top with matching leggings, and add a soft cat-ear headband, a brown belt, claw-shaped costume nails and a detachable spotted tail. Anchor the tail to the belt rather than pinning it to the seat of the jumpsuit, or its weight drags the fabric down. Wear a long auburn wig with wild waves, teased slightly at the crown. Warm gold shadow, strong brows and black liner come first, then spots painted across the temples and cheekbones. I vary the spot sizes and leave a few broken ones, since perfect dots in a row look stamped on. Brown lipstick or neutral gloss balances it, and brown ankle boots finish the look.
27. Giganta Costume With Leopard Dress

Giganta is colorful, retro and simpler than you'd think. Start with a knee-length orange dress, or a top and skirt, in a bold leopard pattern, and add a wide black belt, oversized gold cuffs and gold hoop earrings. A long red wig with big waves and dramatic volume goes on top. Copper shadow, strong liner, peach blush and coral-red lipstick work with the orange, and black knee-high boots balance it. I suggest her giant theme through scale rather than height. An oversized handbag or foam jewelry far too big for anyone tells the joke, while tall platforms just make you wobble. You stay stable and comfortable and still come across as larger than life.
28. Livewire Costume With Blue Wig

Electric blue hair sets Livewire apart from everyone else in the room. Wear a fitted black jumpsuit, or a sleeveless black dress over opaque tights, and add jagged blue fabric panels at the neckline, wrists and waist like flashes of electricity. Cut those zigzags from felt or stretch vinyl; a woven fabric frays at every point. The short, spiky blue-white wig should stand away from the head with a light styling product. Start with a pale luminous base, then add blue and silver shadow, crisp liner, cool highlighter and a soft violet lip. Blue ankle boots or black combat boots with electric-blue laces finish it. Secure any battery light clips carefully, or use reflective tape for the same effect with nothing to charge.
29. Killer Frost Costume With White Wig

Killer Frost is cool blue fabric, sparkle and icy makeup. Begin with a pale blue or white jumpsuit, or a matching top and pants, and add silver shoulder panels, crystal-style cuffs and a sheer white cape that looks like drifting frost. The long white wig with light blue streaks can go in loose waves or a high ponytail. Icy blue shadow, silver liner, pearly highlighter and pale pink lips handle the face, and white knee-high boots or silver ankle boots complete the palette. Place clear acrylic gems around the collar, not across joints where they pop off. A white wig picks up foundation along the hairline, so I put it on after the face is powdered and keep a tissue under the front edge while finishing. Any glitter gel should be cosmetic-grade and kept away from the eyes.
30. Nubia Costume With Gold Armor

Nubia is a regal warrior in red, gold and deep blue. Wear a burgundy fitted top with a navy skirt, shorts over tights or flexible blue trousers. Layer on lightweight gold chest detailing, a wide metallic belt, wrist cuffs and a simple gold tiara, plus a burgundy cape that stops at mid-calf. Dark hair can go in long braids, natural curls or a voluminous textured ponytail, with bronze shadow, defined brows, warm highlighter and deep red lips. Burgundy or gold flat boots make movement easy. Foam armor painted with metallic acrylic is far easier to wear than rigid plastic, and it shapes to different bodies. I seal the foam before painting and finish with a flexible clear coat, so the gold doesn't crack when the chest piece bends as you move.
The Wig Decides Half of These Characters
Batwoman, Starfire, Mera, Giganta, Livewire and Killer Frost are all recognized by their hair before anything else, so the wig deserves a little care.
Getting it on and keeping it there
Braid or pin your own hair flat and wear a wig cap close to your hair or skin color. Pin the wig to the cap at the temples and the nape. If it's going under a cowl, hood or tiara, try the whole stack on together a few days early, because the extra layers change how the front sits on your forehead.
Long wigs over a long night
Long synthetic wigs tangle at the nape, where they rub against collars and capes. Mist a little wig detangler into the lengths before you leave, and finger-comb rather than brush once it's styled. Keep heat away unless the label says heat-safe. Afterward, store it loosely in a hairnet or on a head form instead of crushed in a bag, and the waves will still be there next Halloween.
Wings, Capes and the Width of a Doorway
Hawkgirl, Bumblebee and every caped heroine take up more room than you'd guess. Put the wings on and walk through an interior doorway at home; if they don't pass there, they won't at a party either. Practice sitting in a cape too. Sweep it to one side before you sit down, or it pulls hard at your neck. And on a dance floor, give the people on your wing side a little extra space.
Every Heroine Here Comes Down to Color and One Detail
These thirty cover classic heroes, Gotham villains, cosmic champions, a stage magician and a couple of characters with no powers at all. The best costume is rarely the most complicated one. Get the color palette right, add one or two signature accessories and the right hair, and wear shoes you can stand in. Stretch fabric, shortened capes, light wings and foam details make a long night far easier, and almost every look adapts to longer skirts, opaque leggings, flat boots or a relaxed fit without losing the character. If you want my starting suggestion, Zatanna and Lois Lane come almost entirely off secondhand racks, and Killer Frost is the one to pick if you love a full makeup look.
