Four people is the size where a group costume starts to look like a real cast. You can cover a whole gang of cartoon friends, a family, a card deck or a weather report, and nobody has to be the spare. Below are thirty ideas for a group of four friends, from mystery solvers and turtles to gnomes, suspects and a barbershop quartet. I've written each one the way I'd plan it for a group I was dressing: what each person wears, the detail that makes the set read, and the small things that go wrong after a few hours. Most can be swapped between friends of any gender or size, so start the group chat and pick roles before anyone buys a thing.

Lining Up Four Characters So the Group Reads
With four people, the costume has to work in two ways: each person on their own, and all four standing in a row. The second one is where groups lose the effect. Someone stands at the end in a dark coat, someone's headpiece blocks a face, and the theme disappears.
When I plan a quartet, I decide early which detail repeats across all four and make sure it sits at the same height on everyone. A scarf at the neck, a band at the waist or a hat on the head is easy to line up. A felt symbol on one chest and a sleeve on another is not.
- Put the tallest friend in the role with the smallest headpiece, so the line stays even.
- Agree on outerwear. Four matching black jackets look planned, while one puffer coat breaks the set.
- Give the character people recognise most, like Velma or Mario, to the friend most likely to stay in character.
- Take one practice photo at home in rough costume. It shows straight away whose colour or outline isn't reading.
1. Scooby-Doo Friends Group Costume

The Scooby-Doo gang is four very different outfits that still look like one team. Fred wears blue pants, a white sweater, an orange neck scarf and brown shoes. Daphne takes a purple mini or midi dress, a green scarf, pink tights and purple flats or boots. Velma pairs an orange turtleneck with a red skirt, orange knee socks, loafers and square glasses, and Shaggy wears a loose green T-shirt, brown pants and sneakers. Shaggy's shirt should be the baggiest thing in the group; a fitted green tee loses the character. Neat hair for Fred, a red wig or smooth waves for Daphne, a short brown bob for Velma and tousled hair for Shaggy. Magnifying glasses, flashlights and a cardboard mystery map finish it.
2. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Group Costume

Four turtles is the obvious quartet, and it's easy because everyone shares the base. Green shirts, green leggings or joggers and a light brown shell backpack go on all four. Then the colours: blue for Leonardo, red for Raphael, purple for Donatello, orange for Michelangelo, through eye masks, elbow and knee bands and belts. I cut the eye masks from stretch jersey rather than felt, because felt masks slip down the nose once you're warm. Green beanies or temporary green hair spray help the head, and a little green makeup at the cheeks and temples is enough. Brown sneakers or lace-up boots, pizza-box props and soft foam training gear keep it friendly and light.
3. Wizard Of Oz Group Costume

Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Lion give four friends four completely different silhouettes. Dorothy wears a blue gingham dress over a white blouse, ankle socks, red flats and braided pigtails with blue ribbons. The Scarecrow takes patched brown pants, a plaid shirt, a floppy hat, raffia cuffs and brown boots. The Tin Man needs silver pants, a metallic top, silver face accents, a funnel hat and grey sneakers, while the Lion wears a brown sweatsuit with a faux-fur collar, ears, a tail and boots. Silver face paint is drying on the skin over a long night, so I'd keep it to the nose, cheekbones and chin. A basket, a paper heart, a diploma scroll and a courage medal give each one their story.
4. Mario Friends Group Costume

Mario, Luigi, Peach and Daisy give you four colour stories: red, green, pink and yellow. Mario wears blue overalls, a red shirt, a red cap, white gloves and brown boots, and Luigi repeats it with green. Peach takes a pink dress, white gloves, a gold crown, blue jewelry and pink heels or flats; Daisy a yellow dress with orange details, a floral crown, white gloves and yellow shoes. Before buying two pairs of overalls, check that the straps adjust far enough; cheap overalls often sit too high in the crotch on taller friends. Tuck hair under the caps, give the princesses waves or a simple updo, and carry foam stars, gold coins and mushrooms.
5. Golden Girls Group Costume

The Golden Girls is the quartet for friends who'd rather be funny than fancy, and it's one of the most comfortable here. Dorothy wears a long patterned jacket, wide-leg trousers, statement earrings and low heels. Rose takes a pastel cardigan, a floral skirt, pearls and sensible pumps. Blanche gets the silky jewel-tone dress, sparkly jewelry, big waves and metallic kitten heels, and Sophia wears a printed house dress, an oversized cardigan, glasses, rolled stockings and a structured handbag. Thrift stores are full of the right jackets and cardigans in the right decade. Grey or silver wigs in each signature shape, soft blush and classic lipstick read better than aging makeup. Coffee mugs and a cardboard cheesecake box finish the kitchen table.
6. Inside Out Emotions Group Costume

Joy, Sadness, Anger and Disgust are monochrome costumes, so the colour has to be strong. Joy wears a yellow dress with blue florals, yellow flats and a short bright-blue wig. Sadness takes a pale-blue sweater, navy pants, round glasses, blue sneakers and a chin-length blue wig. Anger wears a white shirt, a red tie, brown trousers, red face accents and brown shoes, while Disgust takes a green dress, a purple neck scarf, green tights, flats and a green bob. Bright blue and green wigs look flat and plastic under flash; a light mist of dry shampoo softens the sheen. Match eye shadow and blush to each character, and make memory orbs from clear fillable balls lined with iridescent paper.
7. Alice In Wonderland Group Costume

Alice, the Mad Hatter, the Queen of Hearts and the White Rabbit make a quartet with one character for every kind of friend. Alice wears a pale-blue dress, a white apron, a black headband, striped tights and black Mary Janes. The Hatter takes patterned trousers, a bright vest, a tailcoat, an oversized bow tie, a top hat and boots, and the Queen a red-and-black dress with hearts, a gold crown, red lipstick and black heels. The Rabbit wears white pants, a red vest, a blue jacket, ears, white gloves and loafers. The Hatter is the role I'd give the friend who likes thrifting, since mismatched patterns are the point. Add a teacup, a pocket watch, playing cards and a painted signpost.
8. Ghostbusters Team Costume

Four Ghostbusters in matching uniforms are practical and easy to personalise. Each friend wears a khaki utility jumpsuit or a tan shirt with cargo pants, plus black belts, elbow pads, name patches, fingerless gloves and black boots. The packs come from painted cardboard boxes, plastic tubing, bottle caps and reflective tape. Four packs in one room take up a lot of space, so I'd make them shallow and agree to take them off once you're settled at a party. Keep the handheld pieces clearly costume-like. Slightly messy hair and a little smudged grey shadow on the cheeks suggest a long night, different name patches tell people who's who, and plush ghosts or fabric streamers make the photo props.
9. Addams Family Group Costume

Wednesday, Morticia, Gomez and Pugsley are gothic but never frightening. Wednesday wears a black dress with a white collar, black tights, braided pigtails and Mary Janes. Morticia takes a long fitted black dress, sleek centre-parted hair, dark eyes, red lips and pointed black flats or heels. Gomez wears a pinstriped suit, a white shirt, a dark tie and slicked hair, and Pugsley a black-and-white striped shirt with black shorts or trousers. A long fitted dress restricts your stride, so Morticia should check she can climb a curb in it; a hidden side slit at the hem solves it. Keep complexions natural with defined eyes. A black rose, an old book, a toy spider and an empty picture frame make a good family portrait.
10. Stranger Things Friends Costume

Eleven, Max, Dustin and Steve are a 1980s gang built from casual clothes. Eleven wears a colourful printed shirt, high-waisted shorts, suspenders, striped socks and white sneakers. Max takes a striped tee, a light jacket, denim shorts, skate shoes and a red wig or natural waves. Dustin wears a graphic T-shirt, shorts, a bright cap, a curly wig and a backpack, and Steve a navy sailor-style top with matching shorts, a name tag and styled brown hair. Shorts are cold in late October, so I'd tell all four to wear skin-tone tights or keep the look for an indoor party. Soft blush and tinted balm suit the era. Flashlights, walkie-talkies, binoculars and club badges finish it.
11. Mean Girls Group Costume

Cady, Regina, Gretchen and Karen are early-2000s school outfits with pink as the thread. Cady wears a red T-shirt, dark jeans, sneakers and straight auburn hair, which makes her the outsider of the group in exactly the right way. Regina takes a pink cardigan, a fitted top, a plaid skirt, glossy blonde waves and heeled ankle boots. Gretchen wears a brown skirt, a pastel sweater, hoops, big curls and loafers, and Karen a pink mini dress or top and skirt with silver jewelry and loose waves. Glossy lips and rosy cheeks suit all four. A blank journal with a handmade Burn Book cover is the prop people will ask to see. Let each friend set her own hemline.
12. Powerpuff Girls And Professor Costume

Adding Professor Utonium to the Powerpuff Girls makes a neat four. Blossom wears a pink dress with a black waist stripe, white tights, black shoes, a long red wig and a big red bow. Bubbles repeats the dress in blue with blonde pigtails and Mary Janes, and Buttercup in green with a short black wig. The Professor wears a white lab coat over a shirt and black pants, with a black tie, glasses and dress shoes. That big red bow flops forward on its own, so I'd stiffen it with interfacing or wire the loops. Bright eye makeup for the three heroes and a plain face for the Professor. Cardboard hearts, stars and a science beaker work for the photos.
13. Toy Story Friends Group Costume

Woody, Jessie, Buzz and Bo Peep give four friends equally detailed roles. Woody wears jeans, a yellow plaid shirt, a cow-print vest, a red scarf, a brown hat and boots. Jessie takes denim, a white Western shirt with yellow panels, a red hat, a braided red wig and cow-print accents. Buzz layers a white top and pants with green-and-purple foam panels and a fabric hood, and Bo Peep wears a pale-blue jumpsuit or dress, a pink cape, a bow, a blonde updo and blue flats. Bo's shepherd's crook is the prop that gets bumped, so make it from a light foam pool noodle over a dowel. Rosy, animated makeup, a sheriff badge, a cardboard control panel and a cloud-print tote finish the four.
14. Clue Suspects Group Costume

Clue suspects are a dressy quartet coded entirely by colour. Miss Scarlet wears a red dress, red lipstick, dark waves and black heels. Colonel Mustard pairs mustard trousers with a matching vest, a white shirt, a bow tie and brown shoes. Mrs. Peacock takes a teal or blue dress, a jeweled headband without feathers, blue eye shadow and pumps, and Professor Plum a purple suit or sweater vest, round glasses and loafers. Mustard is the hardest colour to find in menswear, so I'd start that search first and build the rest around whatever shade turns up. Room cards, a detective notebook or a big cardboard magnifier work as props, and gold name badges label each suspect.
15. Four Seasons Group Costume

The four seasons let each friend wear something pretty in a completely different palette. Spring wears a pastel-green dress, a floral headband, vines, pink makeup and nude flats. Summer takes yellow or coral, sun-shaped clips, bronzed makeup, sandals and a light fan. Fall wears an orange dress or a rust sweater with a brown skirt, a leaf crown, copper shadow and ankle boots, and Winter goes icy blue or white with silver accessories, white tights and pale boots. Summer is the cold role on a late-October night, so give that friend a cardigan in the same coral. Paper flowers, a cardboard sun, fabric leaves and soft snowflakes make the props, and similar silhouettes hold the four together.
16. Playing Card Suits Group Costume

Card suits are the cleanest quartet here: hearts, diamonds, clubs and spades. Everyone starts in matching black or white dresses, jumpsuits or shirts with trousers, with large felt suit symbols front and back. Hearts and diamonds take red tights, red makeup and red shoes; clubs and spades go black with smoky eyes. Large felt shapes ripple when glued to a stretchy top, so I iron fusible web onto the back of the felt before pressing it on. Four different hairstyles, a ponytail, a bob, a bun and loose waves, keep each person individual. Small suit-shaped headbands add height without discomfort, and foam-board playing cards make the group prop.
17. Colorful Crayons Group Costume

Four crayons in red, blue, green and purple are bright and fast to make. Each friend wears one colour head to toe in a shirt with pants, leggings, a skirt or a dress, with black felt bands near the shoulders and hem for the wrapper. Pointed poster-board hats sit on comfortable headbands, and socks and sneakers match the colour. One sweep of coloured liner and a matching lip tint is all the makeup you need. Poster board softens in damp air, so if the night involves walking outside I'd make the cones from craft foam instead. Hand-paint a silly colour name across each front, and carry small sketchbooks or cardboard scribbles.
18. Rock Paper Scissors Shoot Costume

Rock, paper, scissors and shoot gives the old game a fourth player. Rock wears grey with light foam rock panels, silver-grey makeup, tousled hair and grey sneakers. Paper takes a white top and pants with blue notebook lines, a pencil headband and white shoes. Scissors wears silver with a rounded craft-scissors headband, metallic shadow and grey boots. The shoot friend becomes the referee in a black-and-white striped shirt, black pants, a whistle, a cap and sneakers, holding a cardboard scoreboard. I'd tell the referee to take the whistle off before you go indoors; it gets blown far more than anyone expects. Big labels make the joke clear, and posing in hand-game positions sells it.
19. Breakfast Foods Group Costume

A breakfast table of eggs, bacon, toast and orange juice is a fun four. The egg wears white with a yellow felt yolk, a yellow headband, white tights and sneakers. Bacon wears red with wavy cream felt stripes and burgundy shoes. Toast wears tan under a bread-shaped foam-board panel with a brown beanie, and orange juice wears bright orange with a carton-shaped hat, a striped straw and white sneakers. The carton hat is top-heavy, so I'd fix it to a wide headband and add an elastic strap under the hair at the back. Keep each panel light with generous armholes. A cardboard breakfast tray or menu board and napkin-shaped mini bags carry your phones.
20. Weather Forecast Group Costume

A weather report is a costume with a built-in entrance. Sunshine wears yellow with a ray headband, gold makeup and yellow shoes. Rain wears blue under a clear raincoat with a raindrop headband, blue liner and rain boots. The cloud takes white and pale grey layers with a fluffy batting headpiece, silver makeup and white sneakers, and the rainbow wears a striped dress or sweater with bright pants and clips. Polyester batting is the right cloud stuffing because it stays fluffy, but it sheds, so I'd wrap it lightly in tulle. Forecast cards for each person, and walk in with cloud and rain first, then rainbow and sun as the forecast improves.
21. Garden Gnomes Group Costume

Garden gnomes coordinate without anyone matching exactly. Each friend wears a different solid-colour tunic or sweater, dark leggings or relaxed trousers, a belt and brown ankle boots, with a tall felt hat in red, blue, green or yellow. Tall felt hats flop over halfway up unless you stiffen them, so I spray mine with fabric stiffener or line them with a cone of thin card. Braided yarn, soft faux beards or rosy cheeks give each gnome a personality. One carries a watering can, one a basket of fabric flowers, one a cardboard mushroom and one a small garden sign. Skip anything heavy or ceramic-looking. The pointed hats make it obvious you're a set.
22. Classic Halloween Monsters Group Costume

A vampire, a witch, a mummy and a werewolf make a traditional monster quartet that stays family-friendly. The vampire wears black trousers, a white shirt, a red-lined cape, sleek hair, pale makeup and boots. The witch takes a purple-and-black dress, a pointed hat, striped tights, soft smoky eyes and buckled boots. The mummy wears cream clothes layered with loose fabric strips, and the werewolf brown pants, a plaid shirt, faux-fur cuffs, ears, tousled hair and whiskers. Mummy strips unravel fast, so I tack each one to the base layer with a few stitches rather than wrapping them loose. A goblet, a small broom, an old scroll and a full-moon sign complete the four.
23. Sun Moon Star And Cloud Costume

Sun, moon, star and cloud make a soft celestial group. The sun wears gold or yellow with a radiant headpiece, luminous makeup and metallic flats. The moon takes a silver dress or suit, a crescent headband, cool highlighter and silver shoes. The star wears navy or gold with felt stars, sparkling clips, glitter shadow and ankle boots, and the cloud goes white and pale blue with a fluffy headband, pearly makeup and white sneakers. With four headpieces in one photo, I'd keep them all roughly the same height so no one dwarfs the others. Matching mini bags or small wands carry the theme, and similar shimmering fabrics tie the four together.
24. 1980s Workout Group Costume

A 1980s workout class is the comfiest quartet on this list. Each friend wears a bright leotard or fitted tank over leggings, with contrasting bike shorts, leg warmers, sweatbands and white sneakers. Assign colour pairs, pink with turquoise, purple with yellow, orange with blue, green with magenta, so each person is distinct. High side ponytails, teased curls or waves under a sweatband handle the hair, and blue liner, pink blush and gloss keep the face loud. Leotards are awkward in a bathroom queue, so a two-piece crop top and high-waisted shorts give the same look with less fuss. Foam dumbbells, rolled mats and class passes make easy props, and one matching instructor pose is all you need for photos.
25. Disco Dancers Group Costume

Disco lets four friends wear four different shapes inside one glittering theme. One takes a silver jumpsuit, another gold flares with a sequined top, a third a colourful wrap dress and the fourth a white suit with a metallic shirt. Platform-style shoes with stable soles, big sunglasses, hoops and sparkling belts build the period. Fluffy curls, feathered layers or rounded wigs do the hair, and metallic shadow with gloss is enough makeup. A white suit shows every drink spill, so whoever wears it should carry a stain pen. Mirror-ball purses or cardboard stars make the props, and silver details on all four keep it connected.
26. Barbershop Quartet Costume

A barbershop quartet is built for exactly four, which is why I like it so much. Everyone wears a striped vest or matching blazer over a white shirt, dark trousers, a bright bow tie and polished shoes, plus a straw boater with a ribbon band and optional sleeve garters. Vary only the tie colours. Boaters are stiff and slide off the back of the head, so I tuck a strip of foam weatherstrip inside the band to grip the hair. Neatly combed hair, wigs or a playful faux mustache add humour, with defined brows and rosy cheeks for the stage look. Sheet music, cardboard microphones or a sign with your made-up quartet name, then practise one synchronised pose.
27. Circus Performers Group Costume

A circus troupe gives four friends four very different characters: ringmaster, clown, magician and strongperson. The ringmaster wears black pants, a red tailcoat with gold trim, a top hat, bold liner and boots. The clown takes a bright jumpsuit, striped socks, a curly wig, cheerful makeup and big-looking sneakers that are still safe to walk in. The magician wears tailored black, a cape, white gloves, a top hat and oversized cardboard cards, and the strongperson a striped top, black shorts over leggings, a curled mustache, wrist cuffs and boots. I'd keep the clown makeup round and smiling, because sharp angles push it toward scary. A foam barbell and matching red accents tie the troupe together.
28. Fairytale Adventure Group Costume

A princess, a knight, a fairy and a friendly dragon make a flexible storybook four. The princess wears a jewel-tone gown, a small crown, soft curls and comfortable flats. The knight layers a silver tunic over black pants with a fabric cape, a foam shield, a silver headband and boots. The fairy wears a pastel dress or jumpsuit with translucent wings, floral hair pieces and ballet flats, and the dragon a green hoodie or jumpsuit with felt scales, fabric wings, a tail and green face accents. Felt scales take ages to cut one by one, so I fold a strip of felt and cut a scalloped edge, then stitch the strips on in rows. A storybook and a castle sign connect the four.
29. Pac-Man And Ghosts Group Costume

Pac-Man with three ghosts is a chase scene you can wear. Pac-Man wears a yellow shirt with matching pants or a dress, yellow shoes, a round headpiece and simple black eye makeup. The ghosts wear red, pink and blue head to toe, topped with light fabric ponchos cut into rounded, wavy hems, with white eye details on the front and coordinating headbands. Fleece is the fabric I'd pick for the ponchos, because it holds a cut wavy edge without fraying or hemming. Tights or pants and sneakers match each ghost. Foam-board dots, cherries and pixel fruit make the props, and Pac-Man posing at the front with the ghosts in a line behind makes the picture.
30. Wizard School Houses Group Costume

Four wizard-school houses work without four identical robes. Each friend wears a white button-down, a dark skirt or trousers, a black cardigan or cape, a striped scarf and black loafers or boots, and the house colour, red, green, blue or yellow, goes into the scarf, tie, socks, hair ribbon and a hint of eye makeup. Scarves are what people recognise first, so if you only buy one proper piece per person, make it the scarf. Different hairstyles keep each student individual. Old textbooks, feather pens, sealed potion bottles of coloured water and handmade badges make props, and rolled parchment swaps in for wands at venues with strict prop rules.
Taming Cheap Character Wigs Before the Party
Half the quartets above use a coloured wig somewhere, and party-store wigs come out of the bag looking shiny and flat. A little work the day before makes a big difference, and none of it needs special skills.
- Shake the wig out and brush it gently from the ends upward with a wide-tooth comb, never from the root down.
- Mist it lightly with a mix of water and a little fabric softener to cut static and frizz.
- Dust dry shampoo or a little baby powder through the lengths to take the plastic shine off.
- Trim a too-thick fringe with scissors held vertically, snipping into the ends rather than cutting straight across.
- Wear a wig cap and pin the wig at the temples and the nape. Synthetic fibres frizz near heat, so keep away from candles and the oven.
If someone in the group would rather skip a wig, a temporary colour spray or coloured clip-in strands will give the hint of a character without the heat of a full wig on their head all night.
Where Four People Put Their Phones, Keys and Treats
Very few costumes have pockets, and four people with nowhere to put a phone end up holding everything in their hands for every photo. Plan for it when you plan the costume. A small crossbody bag in the character's colour disappears into most of these looks, and a flat zip pouch can hang from the inside of a belt or waistband.
For groups, I'd also suggest one shared bag carried by whoever has the simplest costume, holding the face paint for touch-ups, a few safety pins, a mini roll of tape and some wipes. Something always comes loose, and having the fix with you saves the costume for the rest of the night.
Who Gets Which Role in Your Four
The group costumes that work are the ones every person is happy wearing, not just the one who suggested the theme. Settle the budget first, and agree how much will be handmade and how much bought. Then hand out roles early, so everyone has time to find clothes, test makeup and build light props. Be generous about adapting: different bodies, mobility needs and comfort levels can all fit inside the same idea with longer hems, flat shoes or an extra layer. Keep one shared colour or signature detail, and four people will read as one cast in every photo of the night.
